TENNESSEANS IN MISSISSIPPI
Submitted by Rebecca Williams Harris
2396 Corning Avenue, Memphis, TN 38127
The Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi was published in 1891 by The
Goodspeed Publishing Company. In 1978 it was reprinted by The Reprint Company,
Publishers, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
The abstracted biographies show some connection with Tennessee in the life of the
subject. Since they are abstracts and not complete quotes, the researcher should
refer to the original book for complete information. Abbreviations used are:
B - Born
D - Died
M - Married
PTS - Parents
SIBS - Siblings
CHN - Children
GRPTS - Grandparents
GGPTS - Great Grandparents
MIL - Military Service
"Still living" of course, pertains to 1891 when the book was published.

marriage record book, although it contains no explanation of its history, is obviously a copy of earlier records. When the bonds were returned, the date and name of
the officiant are recorded. See Vol. 29, 1982 for 1792-1814 Jefferson Co. marriages.

"Circuit Court of Maury County
October Term 1813
The Grand-jury of Maury County feeling the many evils and inconveniences
which result from the present judiciary system, and believing it a duty not unbecoming their station ... beg leave to represent that the present system of Courts, in
their opinion, is an unnecessary expense to the State ... inconvenient and oppressive
to the people •.• that the Circuit Courts should be abolished ••. Let a Court to be denominated 'the Court of Common Pleas' be organized; to be composed of five judges to
be selected from each County from amongst the most virtuous and intelligent of our
Citizens, and held in each County three times a year. Let the Judges instead of

a salary, have so much for trying each cause, to be taxed in the bill of costs of
each suit. Let this Court have jurisdiction of all matters of which the present
County Courts and Circuit Courts have jurisdiction, except that part of the jurisdiction of the County Courts which relates to County business, such as laying out
roads and ferry granting, letters of Administration etc. which should be the only
jurisdiction to be retained by the County Courts. Let an appeal be, in matters of
law, from the Court of Common Pleas to the Supreme Court of Errors & Appeals. From
a system like this, it is conceived the following advantages would arise:
1. A saving of about $10,000 a year to the State
2. A speedy and impartial administration of justice
3. The poor would be on a level with the rich
4. The lives of our Citizens would not be dependant on the caprice or
mistaken notions of a single judge
5. The Courts would sit oftener •..
6. Our judges would reside amongst us .•.
7. Our Courts then would be more compatible with the services of our
government, instead of being a mockery of justice ...

"The remonstrance of the undersigned inhabitants of the County of Davidson respectfully represent to your honors that there are a number of
situations on the banks of Cumberland river, which would be convenient for the loading and unloading boats and other craft, which places generally belong to individuals owning lands on said river ... " The petitioners claim that the landowners
either refuse to allow landing or charge an "extravagant price for that priviledge."
Persons who live within a mile of the landing site must haul corn and other crops up
to five miles to other landings - Even keepers of public ferries refuse to allow
persons to load & unload their boats at such places without payment of "extravagant
premiums." "The landings at Nashville at McGAVOCKS's ferry, at Benjamin PHILIPS',
Benjamin JOSLIN's, at Josiah HERTER's(?) and Jonathan F ROBERTSON's are essentially
necessary." The petitioners request an act to oblige these persons to permit persons to use these landings and to "have a lane or gates leading to such places upon
the payment. .. of a sum to be established by the act ... " Signed by:

FAMILY GATHERINGS
Prepared for publication by Mary Louise Graham Nazar
"A YOUNG MAN I S QUEST" (continued from Spring issue)
Jan 22nd 1852 After talking an hour or two with the young ladies I was
under the necessity of leaving this enchanted ground & repair to my daily business.
Went into the Masonic Hall & took a short Section from D.O. Kirkpatrick & D.O. Nelson. At 3 oclock started in the cars for Nashville. Attended auction at night &
bought several books. Took a lecture from D.O. Nelson before going to bed.
Jan 24th 1852 Left Nashville in the morning train & arrived home at 11 &
spent the ballance of the day as usual. After supper was visited by Drs. Kirkpatrick
& Pattison. Spent a very pleasant evening conversing & receiving instruction in
masonry. If all masons were like Drs. K & P I should enjoy the privileges & associations very much. But unfortunately there are some black sheep in nearly every
flock. Peradventure I am one in the Masonic fold. I know not how others may feel
but I have a solemnity of feeling about me that precludes the possibility of levity.
Jan 25th 1852 Stayed at home till the cars passed & then rode over to
Ewing Church & listened to a sermon from the Rev. Mr. Young. Greatly disappointed
in not meeting C & S there. Met Jas S Canon/Conon who went home with me & took dinner. Went to the depot after dinner & had a long & confidential conversation with
him upon the subject nearest our hearts. But I had forgotten to tell my good Journal that Mr. Cannon had made a confident of me & acknowledged that he was in love
with my Cousin Carrie & declared his intention of addressing her matrimonially. I am
sorry that he has determined to do this ... I am afraid that he will not meet with a
return of his attachment ...
Jan 28th 1852 Maj. Tucker was here this morning on his way to Nashville.
Found after he left that C & S had gone to Marshal. If I had known that they were
going I should have called on them before leaving & if I had called probably should
have been now a discarded or accepted lover. I am now fully convinced that I am in
love notwithstanding I have so often boasted of my insusseptibility. I have felt
very much like making some desperate resolutions. How much I would give to be able
to read the innermost recesses of that girls heart. & I would give wealth beauty
fame (If I had them) my all of bliss my every hope resign to wake in that young heart
one feeling tender to clasp that little hand & call it mine. Now my dear friend I
am about telling you a secret. It is one that I have never yet entrusted to mortal
being. Should you reveal it my confidence in you will be forever destroyed. And
lest someone should take you when off your guard I will not mention any names well
knowing that you can guess who I allude to. But the secret is this I am going to
address that girl as soon as she returns from Marshal ie if I do not find that she
is either engaged or averse to an engagement with me. Now that is one thing settled
if life & health are spared to both. I am a bad hand to keep resolutions but I have
a presentiment that I shall keep this & what in not so pleasant I have another presentiment that I shall be kicked to use an inelegant but expressive phrase ...
Jan 31st 1852 Rained before daylight but cleared off before breakfast.
Very plesant all day but rather windy. After breakfast went to the woods & from
there to Mrs. Ridleys to see about getting some corn of her negroes. Had a severe
headache in the morning but felt better after dinner. Mr & Mrs Fleming returned from
Nashville in the evening train. There has been no Ladies here today.
Feb 1st 1852 Went to Maj. Tuckers in the morning but returned in time to
go to preaching at Smyrna. Mr Buell gave an unusually long and tiresome discourse of
about two hours. Felt very dull & did not enjoy the discourse at all. Went home
with Mr Patterson & took dinner. Saw Miss Josephine Reilly/Ridley but did not have
much conversation with her. Like her appearance very much. Think her a very amiable
& interesting young lady. Had a long conversation with Mr P upon Masonry its influence principles & duties. The qualifications necessary for a candidate ...

Family Gatherings (continued)
Feb 5th 1852 This day or rather night was remembered by being the regular
meeting of Smyrna Lodge. S B Boring & H Rushing took the first degree F Fleming,
W Hazlewood & myself the second & J C Brothers the third or Masters degree. The
night was rainy & unpleasant but still a very respectable number were present.
Feb 8th 1852 It being my day to stay at home I did not leave the house
till after the cars passed & then went to church at the Academy & heard a discourse
from Mr Hi11/Hi1e. On my return was accompanied by J S & Miss Jane Canon as far as
the depot. After the cars passed in the evening I went to Mrs E Rid1eys & spent the
evening & part of the night. C/H Buckhanan & Mrs Hill were there & (later) Mr Hill
came also. Mr B at the request of Mrs H gave a lengthy & very interesting acct of
his Santa Fe expedition the circumstances connected with it & its results .•.
Feb 10th 1852 F Fleming went to Nashville today. The lodge held our adjourned meeting to Night. W Haz1ewod took the Masters degree Aquilla Davis the
Fellow Craft & T A Chilcutt & B Woodruff were initiated as Entered Apprentices.
Rained again as it has done nearly every night of the meeting of the Lodge ..•
Feb 12 1852 Went in the evening to Jackson Smiths & John Popes. Gained
their consent to renew the notes held by H & B Douglass & Co. J Pope is to give
his note with J Smith for an endorser for one half the amt & I am to do the same &
give Maj Tucker for an endorser. Went to Stewartsboro & stayed with Brown all night
& settled up all my business with him.
Feb 13th 1852 Breakfasted at Esq Whites & collected J C Cookes note which
he had previously agreed to pay. Saw Miss H A Spinks & spent a few minutes with her
after breakfast. Rode to Murfreesboro & settled the business relative to the Douglass claims with Jas Avent. Rode home with Dr Kirkpatrick & by the way took a lecture in Fellow Craft degree from him. Stayed at Maj Tuckers all night & settled
with him all the business I had relative to the Etter estate & my own business .••
Feb 15th 1852 R Woodruff called & requested me to give him a lecture
which I did. Mr Patterson came up on the cars & called on Mrs Smith his intended.
I wish him great good luck. I suppose it is his last call before the eventful day
arrives that is to witness his marriage with the lovely young widow. I went to Maj
Tuckers & took supper. Mr & Mrs Hazlewood were there. May has improved in her
looks very much. I feel some of the old sensations springing up in my heart occasionally when I meet her. I believe I did love her but still I think it was mixed
with a great deal of sensuality. I ana11ized the feelings with which I regarded her
once & found they consisted of avarice lust & vanity. But I hardly think the ana1ization was correct-- Returned before dark & employed myself in reading an hour or
two & then enveloped some papers for Carrie & Sue. Query? I wonder if I should have
come home so soon if the beforementioned Carrie & Sue had been at Maj Tuckers ..•
Feb 16th 1852 Went to Stewartsboro in the morning & got the letters &
papers & also settled some postage accts. Several ladies called today but very little trading done. Aunt Lucy & Miss Harriet Spinks were here in the evening. I regret very much that the latter entertains the sentiments toward me that she does.
But I cannot help it. Neither can I accuse myself of having acted improperly toward
her. Mr & Mrs F went to Nashville today. Report concerning the marriage of the
young widow confirmed •..
Feb 18th 1852 Mr F returned today Times Dull myself duller & trade dullest. Went to the Richabite Div S of T at night & presented my card which was reed
& myself admitted to membership. Messers J W Champ A H Vaughan Raulston & Wm Battle were initiated. Mr F seemed very unwilling that I should go notwithstanding I
have been here every night unless called off on special business. Took supper with
Mrs Gresham. Nedia (Mrs Moore that is) was there looking better than ever •••
Feb 19th 1852 Trade lively felt well & enjoyed myself very well through
the day. I wish it would be so always. I feel so much better when I can look back
upon a day well spent. I wonder how it is with you My dear Cousin Sue. Sold C H

Guzavey? a bill of goods. Sat up late at night making out bill etc.
Feb 21st 1852 I must (or have rather) admit that I am in Love that the
one "most dear" is my good cousin Sue. Hell I have been a long time finding it out.
Feb 22nd 1852 Rode to Ewing Church to preaching. But few persons there.
Mr Hill preached from Psalm 61 & last clause of the 2nd verse "Lead me to the Rock
That is higher than I." How much I felt the necessity of making this my earnest
prayer & yet how little was I profited by the discourse. Hent home after preaching
& stayed all day. Maj Tucker B F Hazlewood C L Davis & Hm Ridley called in the
evening. Felt no interest in anything I heard read or saw •..
Feb 27th 1852 Margaret & Miss Marion Hazlewood came down on the cars today & remained in the store an hour or two. If I know my own feelings now I am
heartily glad that I did not marry that girl. I can see but very little in her to
promote my happiness although I once thought her essential •..
Feb 29th 1852 In consequence of the heavy rains there has been but one
car passed since friday evening. One ran off the track above Murfreesboro killed
four cows & one dog. The cars then came & I went to the wood shelter where I saw
Hr Huggins & by him was introduced to Col Brabson & by him to Col Bounds both volunteers in the Mexican Har. Heard the particulars of the difficulty that took place
between Col Brabsen & Gen Zolicofer in Nashville last week ..•
Mar 1st 1852 Mr F retd this morning from N bringing Mrs & Miss McCombs.
The old lady seems quite aristocratical in her notions. The daughter is somewhat
that way but not so much so as her mother. Mrs F & Miss M went to Mr Davis' to help
prepare for the approaching wedding. Hent to Maj Tuckers in the morning before
breakfast was introduced to Mr Eagleton of Murfreesboro. Was very much pleased with
his appearance. He seems sincere candid & devotional. Miss Tennessee Norton & Miss
A Batey were here today.
11ar 2nd 1852 Harked in the store all day till near night & then prepared
to go to the wedding at Mr Davis'. Hent over after supper & found a very agreeable
company assembled there. Miss Lou Champ Miss Martha McComb Miss M J & Miss J M Ridley & several other young ladies were there also several married ones. Mrs Smith
looked quite interesting though I felt no regret that I was not the groom. The
evening passed very pleasantly. All seemed to enjoy myself very much. Mr John Currin seemed the lion of the evening & Miss M McC the belle. After the company left
I had the pleasure of accompany Miss Martha home. On my way I became so much engrossed with Miss M that I lost my way & strayed off into Mr Davis' cotton patch.
However I found the path again & arrived safely at home with my interesting charge.
Mar 5th 1852 ... Several persons at the store but little doing. I H Read
B/R Woodruff & myself had a long conversation on temperance Campbellism Masonry
etc. He ended as we commenced two in favor of temperance & opposed to Campbellism
& one opposed to the sins & a devoted disciple of the illustrious Campbell ...
Mar 11th 1852 Hent to Murfreesboro today to attend Court as a witness in
the Etter will case. Saw Mr John A Baugh there & had a long conversation with him
relative to Miss Mary Hoyt & her prospect of getting a school. He expressed great
desire that she should come & take a school at his house. Has not examined & got
permission to stay at home till Saturday. Came home with a violent headache ...
Mar 12th 1852 Stayed at home today till evening & then went in search of
my horse which had strayed off yesterday. Went to Mrs Ridleys & borrowed a horse &
from there to Jefferson & Harris Camp Ground but did not find him though I heard of
his being in Jefferson the day before. Stopped at Wm Morrows & took supper. After
supper Mrs Richardson or rather Mrs Jones it is now came in & talked some time with
me promising to calIon me at the store.
Mar 15th 1852 Went to Murfreesboro today & was examined touching my knowledge of John Etter deed. Felt unwell & came home with the headache as usual ••.

"Ansearchin'" News
Family Gatherings (continued)
Mar 25th 1852 The most cheering news & a few moments of the most perfect
earthly happiness have stamped & left their impress upon my mind. I fear but few
days of such uninterrupted happiness will ever fall to my lot. Henceforth let me
never repine since the Almighty has afforded such inestimable earthly enjoyment as
I have this day experienced. But I have not yet informed you my good journal of the
nature or cause of this. Consequently I see that you remain perfectly calm while I
am in raptures over the bare (blessed I should say) recollections. Well 1"11 try
to write a short history. The day was ushered in by the intelligence that my good
better best friends had returned from Marshall on last Tuesday & also that they were
going to Nashville today. I did not expect them till near night but in this I was
hapi1y disappointed. About eleven oc10ck they came in & were near me before I discovered them. The fee1in~s of that moment I can never describe. Suffice it to say
that they met me in the only way that I would ever wish to meet dearly loved
friends.
They remained nearly all day at the store & house & went down on the cars
at night. Found that Sue had been quite sick but had recovered. She still looks
feeble. Mr J S Canon came in while they were here. He seemed embarrassed & stayed
but a short time. C & S took supper with Mrs F after which I walked with them to
the water station & saw them on the cars where we parted with the promise that I
was to go to Nashville the following day if Mr F retd so that I could leave. If the
whole world was composed of such choice spirits as these what a vast deal of envy
malice spite & in short the whole catalogue of moral evils would be banished from
the world ...
March 28th 1852 By Maj Tucker & informed that there was a fire at J P
Beasley. Saw the light through the window but feeling unwell from a headache did
not go to see it. Was informed soon after that two of his stables two cribs of corn
two mares & 2 colts & nearly all his farming implements were consumed. The stables
being so far apart one where he lived & one at his quarter it was very clearly that
it was the work of an incendiary. Went to preaching at the academy. Rode in the
barouche with C & S leaving Mr C to come on horseback. A young divine from Lebanon
preached Mr Hill being absent. Felt very unwell all day. Got to the academy early
& meeting a fair opportunity fulfilled a promise that I had previously made to Carrie confiding to her my feelings towards her fair Cousin & my wish to change my
position from friend to lover & eventually to Husband. Carrie readily renewed her
promise to assist me as much as her influence would permit. Seemed pleased with my
choice & rather encouraged me to hope. I seemed entering a new sphere. But I will
try keeping expectations under my control so that disappointment will be less depressing. After supper Carrie wrote on a piece of paper "There is light ahead" Hope
Apr 2nd 1852 Felt well all day mostly in consequence of a presentiment
that my friends would be here & was not disappointed. They called in the evening in
company with Mrs Hathews & Margaret.
Apr 3rd 1852 Jas B Moore here today. Informed me that I could get a lot
at Hardemans X roads for the purpose of building a store on. Recommends it as being
an excellent situation. Preaching at the Chapel today. Mr F attended & also J W
Champ in the evening. Helped move the Tailor shop, cut A Gresham's hair & made myself generally useful in small things.
Apr 5th 1852 Arose rather late. Heard Esq Batey & Gooch conversing upon
the subject of masonry. Esq Baty showed his knowledge of its mysteries by telling
the way they were prepared for initiation etc etc. The words of Burns came forcibly
to my mind. "Gh that some power the gift would give us" "To see ourselves as
others see us."
& the words of some other poet Goldsmith, I believe. "Just as the
blockhead rubs his thoughtless skull And thanks his stars he was not born a fool."
After breakfast I mounted the Iron Grey & started for home. The Iron Grey however
felt disposed to test my horsemanship & began his freaks much to my discomfort &
jeopardy. However by dint of tight sticking I succeeded in keeping my seat without

any accident save dropping my hat getting it somewhat soiled. After recovering my
Beaver I went home & passed the day as usual •..
Apr 6th 1852 Mr C E Sneed called & paid me his acct amounting in all to
some 95 dollars. He also informed me that he was about to marry Miss Ann Haynes.
Requested me to go with him after the parson which I did ...
Apr 7 1852 Went to Murfreesboro on the cars today with Carrie. Had a
very pleasant ride. Cousin Sue came here also & went to Dr Pattersons. Collected
some money in Murfreesboro from Mr. Carnahan. Returned in the freight train & sent
some money to Nashville to Misses Kirkman & Ellis by R H i~ite. Had a severe headache in the evening & at night. Mrs F went to Nashville on the express train with
Mr McCombs ...
Apr 11 1852 After breakfast I came home to prepare for preaching. J
Champ consented to stay in my place on condition that I should stay the next Sunday.
Started back to the Maj's & met the carriage before it left the pike. At the request of Carrie I sent my horse back (or forward) to the Maj & took a seat in the
carriage. Called at Mr Brown's & invited Miss Susanna to take a seat also which she
accepted. Mr Hill being absent Mr Rankin filled his place. He is a young preacher
but bids fair to be a useful man. Went by Col Brown's & deposited a part of my precious freight & then to the Maj's with the most precious part. After dinner Carrie
went up stairs pleading fatigue as an excuse but the real object I suspect was quite
another thing. I took my seat by the side of the one most dear (the question is decided now) & read a few pages from "Religious Emblems & Allegories." But I must
confess that my mind wandered strangely from the subject in the book to the subject
by my side. What followed I have but a very indistinct recollection of. I am aware
that I proposed & that she did not reject but asked time for reflection. Before the
conversation was concluded we were interrupted by the entrance of Mr Asa Gresham.
Miss Carrie was called for & soon made her appearance. Conversation becoming rather
dull a walk was proposed & acceeded too. The evening was passed very pleasantly by
me & I hope equally so by Sue & Carrie. I went home at a late hour (too late an
error that I will be careful not commit again) & although I had no positive appearance of acceptance still I had no reason to despair.
Apr 12th 1852 Arose late & felt rather unwell & low spirited. Some misgiving relative to the issue in which I felt such a deep interest. Had an opportunity of sending a note to Carrie which I did stating that I would be there at 7 at
night. Of all restless impatient days that I ever passed this is the worst. After
dark I mounted the iron Grey & rode to meet my doom. Found Joseph Canon there &
some others however they soon retired from the parlor & Carrie went to her room to
finish a letter. The business on which I came was soon introduced & my suspense
most hapily terminated. I can hardly realize that such is the case. I have been
so long accustomed to disappointments that anything else seems fictitious & unreal.
My feelings are indescribable & I can only say may God in his infinite mercy make
me worthy of such a treasure & bless the union should it ever be consummated. And
may she who has confided to my care her earthly happiness never have cause to repent
her choice. May harmony always prevail may discord & strife envy & jealousy never
find a lodging place within our hearts .•.
Apr 17th 1852 There was a called meeting of the Lodge this evening at 2
oclock. I was elected Sect pro Tern & as such it became my duty to read a part of
the proceedings of the Grand Lodge at Nashville. i~ile reading a carriage drove to
the door which by some mesmeric influence I knew to be the Maj's horse I longed for
the opportunity of leaving my post & spending a moment with that dear girl who has
consented to become my companion for life & that scarcely or no less dear one who is
more than sister than with all others that I meet with. There is something that excited the better feeling of my nature & lulls its unhallowed passions. After supper
the girls came by with the carriage & I accompanied them to church. Returning home

we had a long conversation upon the subject of religion its importance effects & the
way of obtaining it. Was pleased to see that Carrie seemed to feel the necessity of
it & the importance of immediate attention to its requirements. May God in his
mercy "lead her to that Rock that is higher than I."
Apr 18 1852 Came home this morning & prepared for church. Though I ought
to record the fact that I indulged in some very improper feelings towards lIfriend
John" for not sending my horse back in time. The Barouche came by \vhich I found
occupied by Sue & Mr Elliott. Attended church at Smyrna & heard a very interesting
discourse from the Rev Mr Hendricks of Clarksville. After which the Sacrament was
administered. Mr Elliott & Mr Bracking (who came with Cousin C) being anxious to
return to Murfreesboro we left without hearing the second sermon ...
Apr 26th 1852 Tended to business as usual, till night & then went to
Nashville on the cars. Miss Mary Campbell & Miss Lu11ie Ridley were on the cars ...
Apr 27th 1852 Got through my business & came home on the evening train.
Went to the Maj's & carried some things that I had bought for Carrie & also my Journal which for the first time was exposed to the perusal of others. After receiving
many compliments it was laid aside & Carrie read hers. Went home very late •..
l1ay 1st 1852 Today was the day for the sale of lots. But Mr F being
still very ill it was postponed. Business has been very good through the week. The
young ladies of Mr E11iots school went by on the cars to a May Day Party above here
on the road. Went to l1aj Tuckers in the evening. Spent a very pleasant evening tho
the thought of the coming separation was painful not only to myself but to those I
love more than all others. I had a long sitting ... with Sue. Carrie was unwell &
had retired. Oh how painful is the thought. Next Tuesday they are to start for
West Tennessee. How long the time will seem until I can again clasp that dear girl
to my heart & say death alone can sever us ...
May 3rd 1852 Stayed till after breakfast at the Maj'. Had a parting talk
& took a parting K the first from the one I love. What contending emotions arise in
my mind while I write. Tomorrow I am to meet her in Nashville but the eyes of the
world will be upon us & we must restrain the feelings of our heart & appear calm &
unconcerned ...
May 4th 1852 Breakfasted at the Ladies ordinary & afterwards went to the
dentists (Dr Gunn) with Carrie & had her teeth p1uged. Went back to the Inn & found
Mrs & Mrs Hazlewood & Sue there. Went to l1r Adams daguereotype rooms & had my
likeness taken & gave it to Sue by her request. On returning to the Inn found Mr
Bracken & M Elliott there ...
May 5th 1852 Left immediately after breakfast on the cars for home.
Found the cars crowded but took a seat early which I had the pleasure of vacating in
favor of Miss Sue Neal. Arrived at home & found Mr F somewhat better ...
May 10th 1852 Mr F came to the store the first time for two weeks. Looks
pale & feeble. Business has been dull all day more so than it has been for months
or days rather. Rained in the evening. Mr & Mrs Hill called this evening in their
buggy but did not come in. How much I dread leaving this neighborhood. It is on
the whole the most pleasant one I have ever lived in. There are some noble spirits
here that are an ornament to any society. I regret very much that there is such a
difference in religious opinions. If they were all united a church might be built
up that for sound mind uncompromising integrity & real worth could not be surpassed
by any in the State. John Pope called here today & wanted a settlement ...
May 12th 1852 Mr F went to Nashville today. He appears very low spirited
& quite cross grained & petu1ent. I am more than half inclined to think that my
time is drawing to a close here. I believe he is dissatified & will find it necessary to discharge one of his clerks & it will be either me or Davis. Well I have no
serious objection to leaving. I believe I can do as well elsewhere. However the
neighborhood I should feel very sorry to leave ...

BOOK REVIEWS
Bess C. Twaddle and Lincoln Johnson
GERMAN AMERICAN NAMES by George F. Jones. 1990. Hard back, 6fx9. Indexed, 268 pp. Order from
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202. $25.00
In Genesis we are told that "names are the consequence of things." Onomastics (the science of
names), etymology (the study of word roots) and philology (lover of words) are a part of this
study of Germanic based names. The author reminds us that we are dealing with a language group
rather than with a country of origin as he attempts to explain the meaning of names borne today
by Americans which derive from the German language or its dialects. The book deals with the
Americanization of some of those names, explaining the social and historical phenomena that contributed to the distinctive character of German-American names. Many such names are never
thought of as German. A lengthy introduction of historical background is included along with
the 207 page alphabetical listing of names with their meanings.
PASSPORTS OF SOUTHEASTERN PIONEERS 1770-1823, by Dorothy Williams Potter.
Hard back, 6x9. Indexed, 448 pp.
St., Baltimore, MD 21202. $32.50
1982, reprinted 1990.
Order from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert
This volume contains several books under one cover. Chapter one deals with the Spanish and British in West Florida and the Mississippi Valley. Other chapters contain information on Indian
Agency passports, federal and state passports ranging from Pennslyvania and Missouri, Illinois,
Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, to the Mississippi Territory and Louisiana. The passports and
even the geographic area referred to in this book need clarification because it is somewhat unusual to associate passports with travel within what is now the United States, and one has to
recall that the southeastern states occupy an area often referred to as the southwest when these
passports were written. Many pages of references and notes are included as well as documentation of material.
THE RESEARCHER'S GUIDE TO AMERICAN GENEALOGY, by Val D. Greenwood.
1990, 2nd Edition. Hard back,
6x9. Indexed, 608 pp. Order from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202. $24.95
The National Genealogical Society has adopted this book as its basic text. Designed to answer
practically all the researchers needs, this completely revised edition has been updated to
include major developments in the field of American genealogy. Updated materials include: Chapter 4 deals with the subject of genealogical evidence; Chapter 25 deals with the selection of
personal computers and computer programs; and Chapter 26 is an effort to expand the view of the
traditional genealogist to that of the sensitive family historian that he ought to become.
1860 CENSUS OF HUNT COUNTY, TEXAS (INCLUDES THE 1860 MORTALITY AND SLAVE SCHEDULES) transcribed
by Loraine Dodson Story. 1979. Soft back, 8~xll. Indexed, 152 pp. Order from Sandra Tedford,
200 Sherry Lane, Farmersville, TX 75031.
$12.50 (TX residents add 88¢ tax)
This printed census is not in the same order as that on the microfilm. The census itself was
microfilmed out of order, splitting precincts and families. It has been rearranged in family
groupings by listing each precinct or beat number as a whole; however, no effort was made to
arrange the precincts in numerical order. The mortality and slave schedules were added to help
complete the records of this census year.
TAPPAN GENEALOGY: ANCESTORS, DESCENDANTS AND ALLIED LINES OF (1) ROBERT TOPHAM, 1550 (XIII)
THOMAS EDMUND TAPPAN, SR. 1955 by Lt. Col. Thomas Edmund Tappan, Jr. 1989. Soft back, plastic
spiral spine, 8fxll; 83 pp, 36 pp Appendix. Order from author, 232 S. Highland, #802, Memphis,
TN 38111.
Write for price.
This book is a collection of Tappan/Toppan family records from the orlgln of the family around
Yorkshire in England to Abraham Toppan, the American immigrant who arrived in Boston June 30,
1637. From this point the author traces the family south and west into Tennessee and eventually to Helena, Arkansas. He has included a number of associated families who intermarried
into the Tappan/Toppan lines and has an Appendix which gives more details about some allied
families. Photographs have been copied of homesites in Massachusetts and later in and around
Helena.

THE MASTER SURNAME INDEX
The MASTER SURNAME INDEX has thousands of cards representing individuals in family
trees of current and past members and subscribers. The index is maintained by the
Tennessee Genealogical Society to help its members with their research. It is not
restricted to any particular locality and, in fact, covers families who lived in
various European countries as well as every state in the United States.
Our Society cannot undertake extensive research for individuals, but information
available from SURNAME INDEX cards may be extremely helpful. Members and subscribers
can be sent facts from surname cards that include names and addresses of persons
working on the same surname along with names, dates, locations and, perhaps, significant events from the index cards. The data on one surname may be requested as often
as once each month. "Common" surnames, such as Jones, Smith, Johnson etc., must have
at least an approximate date and a possible location.
You, as members and subscribers, are invited to send a 3"x5" index card, typed or
clearly printed, for all members of your family tree. Please use 3"x5" cards only,
since other sizes will not fit our file drawers and thus cannot be included. Each
surname card should have at least one date and one place, even if they are estimates;
this will help distinguish someone who lived in one area during a given time from
another person with the same name who was living in a different location at a different time. The SURNAME INDEX service is for subscribers only and may be utilized by
writing The Tennessee Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 111249, Memphis, TN 38111-1249.
Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with every request.
