Tales to Tell
It was London, 1887, a dark and cold London. Ciel´s
birthday approached, Count Ciel Phantonhive, heir to one
of the most important companies in England. He was a
12-year-old boy, medium height, with short dark hair. He was
always with his butler, Sebastian, who would do anything to
serve his master.
Ciel´s girlfriend, Elizabeth, a young, charming lady, was
wearing her casual pale pink dress, when she was introduced
at the Phantonhive mansion in order to have a small party on
the eve of Ciel´s birthday. She decorated the entire mansion;
she hung colourful ribbons on the walls and dressed the
servants elegantly. Elizabeth got a luxurious dark blue suit
for Ciel and, for herself, a beautiful red dress.
While they were dancing to the rhythm of the violin that
Sebastian played, Elizabeth noticed that he was wearing a
different ring from the one she had bought to match his
suit. She got annoyed; she had a tantrum, took off his ring
and threw it away. It broke into pieces. Very angrily, he went
a few steps towards her with hand lifted for her, but Sebastian intervened and stopped him. He apologized in his
master’s name and he explained to her that this ring was
very important and it was a family jewel. She apologized with
tears in her eyes. Just then, Ciel took the ring and he threw
it out of the window. He addressed her and dried her tears,
asking her to dance a little more.
The next day everything was covered with a white coat as
it had snowed all night. Lady Elizabeth and her servant
were walking along a fair on the Thames, which was frozen.
Looking for a gift that would make Ciel happy, she found
“Noah´s Ark”, a toy which they had used to play together
before. In her house, her father told her that the toy was
a fake. Very angry about her mistake, she smashed it into
pieces. With tears in her eyes she found a ring among the
pieces. Amazed and very happy, she asked her servant to
wrap it. And on they went to the Phantonhive mansion.
When she arrived at the mansion, she asked Sebastian to call
Ciel. When he had gone down the stairs, she shouted his
name and gave him a little box. While he was opening the
gift, she noticed that he was wearing the ring that she had
broken. She asked him why the ring wasn´t broken any more
and he explained that Sebastian had put all the pieces in
order, since it was his duty as a butler. She quickly took the
box from his hands and, giggling, left the house.
A few hours later, when Sebastian was preparing his master’s
bed, he heard somebody calling at the door: it was Lady

Los niveles 5 al 8 comprenden 64 hs de inglés a cubrirse en un
mes: 18 clases.

Elizabeth´s maid. She was concerned because the girl had
disappeared from the carriage. Both Ciel with Sebastian
went out in search of her.
In the middle of a dark passage, they thought they saw a
shadow entering a shop. When they approached, they realized that it was a doll house, and when Ciel looked through
the stained-glass window, he was paralyzed with fear. In the
centre of the stained-glass window he found a little doll,
identical to Lady Elizabeth. They entered the shop: it was
empty. All the walls were covered with shelves, which were
full of dolls, of all sizes and colours. Behind the counter
there was a door which stood half open. When they crossed
it, they found a large circular hall with tall columns. They
went to the next room: this one was square and from the
columns hung many lamps which gave a dim golden light.
In the distance, a song could be heard. Following the sound,
they climbed a ladder, up to a room with a table in the
middle, with several pieces of puppets, paint-brushes and
paintings. There were a few shelves on the walls with more
paintings and material.
Elizabeth was at a corner: she looked exactly like a doll.
Ciel drew near her and called her. When she opened her
eyes, she smiled and said his name. Unexpectedly, her body
started to move against her will, she took a stick which lay
on the table and began to chase Ciel around the room, until
Sebastian stopped her. With a few quick movements and a
knife in Sebastian’s hand, the girl´s body fell, lifeless.
While Ciel approached the body, he noticed that there were
a few marionette threads around the body. When Sebastian
took one, they heard a voice behind their backs. It was a
young, red-haired man and his eyes were painted. From his
hands hung a pair of wood rods tied with threads.
A second later all the room filled with the struggle between
the butler and the puppeteer. Sebastian took the stick,
which Elizabeth had used before, and hit the puppeteer on
his head. From the wound sprouted straw and the puppeteer fell down to the floor.
While Ciel kept holding Elizabeth strongly, he felt a movement;
he separated a little from her and saw her open eyes. Very
weakly, she said to him that she wished to give him a birthday
party that would make him happy. Very grateful because she
had finally recovered, Ciel accepted her request.

In order to help you consider these tips:
*Drink a lot of liquid, no matter if it is water, coffee,
juice, etc.
*Use smaller plates
*Gradually, start reducing the servings
*If you want to lose weight, you can eat cereals
*Try to avoid junk food, especially French fries
*You should eat six meals
*Eating sweets is good if you are in a bad mood, but
try to avoid them because they cause cavities.

As promised, here I am again with my journey log
book and its true-to-life anecdotes. In the previous
edition, I proudly shared two of my most enjoyable
memories from my trips: I have used the New English
Files as links for the description of Edinburgh and the
typical English breakfast. This time I am happy to say
that in this issue I am going to tell you that I was at
Amancio Ortega’s former shop, where he used to sell
pyjamas in La Corunna, Spain, and, secondly, I visited
the place for lovers: Notting Hill- England-, where
Julia and Hugh, filmed the most romantic movie ever.
In 2005, the New English File pre-intermediate –as
we call it: the Blue Book- was launched to the market,
replacing the old one. When we approach File 4- A,
we encounter ZARA® and its glorious owner. We got
to know about the origins of this world-wide-known
clothes shop. At that time, in Argentina, it was not
as popular as it is now. So this year, in January, I had
the chance of travelling from Milan to La Corunna,
where this legend was born, not only that, but I visited
Amancio’s first shop and took pictures of his family
house by the sea. Every city in Europe has a Zara store
and as it says about the products they are ‘fashionable
but inexpensive’
Why did we go to la Corunna? Could be a reasonable
question, well, well, well. Long time ago, my father
had a turquoise truck which used to be our place for
adventures when children, there one of my friends was
Inga. Time passed by, we lost touch, in 2006 we met
again and he happened to be one of my boyfriend’s
best friends and in 2009 Igna moved to Spain, so in
this trip, we did not want to lose the opportunity to
come along his place and there we were. LA Corunna
is a wonderful place to live:
What about a place called Notting Hill? This is
another paradise on Earth, but this time not just for
friends but for lovers. In our first trip to London,
Portobello road was a MUST! Since it was a Saturday,
you were able to find the Portobello Market along
the street. As File 6-B from the New English File
intermediate states: ‘See the film... get on a plane’
and we did so. Early that day, we got on the tube and
got off at Notting Hill station, everybody walked
towards the heart of the town, we entered the Travel
Book Shop where William was working when he met
Anna. There were articles on the walls. Everything
was so real. Though we were told that the film had
been shot in studio, we had the feeing of being in
the middle of the shooting.
Afterwards we looked for the Blue Door, but uselessly.
It had been donated for charity and later on painted
black: ‘The original blue door was, I believe, auctioned for
charity some time ago. The new door, now painted black, is
still a target for tourist cameras (and mine!).’
One of the aspects that is still in our minds when
remembering Notting Hill – the film- is the sound
track of the movie. One of the most outstanding songs
is: She by Elvis Costello, when the character is introduced at the beginning of the film.
Finally, after being in so many fabulous places, it is
amazing how your own culture grows and you see
further the pages of a book, and you enrich every single
lesson of yours. In the next edition, I will be sharing
other incidents and accidents we had in Prague, Venice
and many other places. Last but least, if you have any
inquiry, you can contact me on: laurailsesan@hotmail.
com and I’ll hopefully be there. See you in next year’s
edition!

“The city of La Corunna is the best place to live and meet
new friends. For this same reason, there are a lot of expatriates from different parts of the world who decided to
make this wonderful place their home. Sure by now, you
want to experience for yourself how to live in a paradise
like La Corunna, but still uncertain”.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Four Weddings and a Funeral
I was requested to write a brief review of “Four weddings and a
funeral” by Richard curtis. Well, If Andy McDowell managed to
survive one of the worst line readings in history (“Oh…is…it…
raining? I…didn’t…notice) and continued on with her career, why
couldn t I survive this task?
“Four Weddings and a Funeral” is a simple little tail that follows a
group of friends over 18 months of their lives as they participate
in four weddings (just barely) and a funeral. More specifically it’s
about a charming Englishman, Charles (Hugh Grant), who meets a
beautiful American girl, Carrie (Andie MacDowell), and continues
to meet her at, four weddings and, you guessed it, a funeral. It
seems to take place in an England of eternal summer, a land which
consists almost entirely of green and pleasant countryside and the
more exclusive districts of London and which is populated solely
by members of the upper and upper-middle classes. Sarcasm? I
don t think so. As the story triggers, we can see Charles’s journey
(1994)
to emotional maturity, from his dozen of girlfriends to the one he
really loves: Carrie. But his fear of commitment lead him to lose
her... or maybe not. He needed 18 months plus the dead of one of
his best friends to understand what had to be done. And he did it,
with the help of his deaf brother, David. That s why the last wedding
is inconclusive: time has came to act like the man he was, not like
that stupid bachelor we first met at the beginning.
I won t spoil it, you have to watch the movie or read the script, which,
by the way, has been nominated for an Oscar award as best script
but lost to Quentin Tarantino s “Pulp Fiction”, display average cast
s performances and its beautiful soundtrack “Love is all around” by
The Truggers, fulfills its mission.
A special mention before the end: there is a gorgeous poem read
at the funeral service scene “Funeral blues” by A W Auden. I d like
you all to read it. These verses makes it worth seeing the movie.
Here you are, enjoy!

the most horrible accidents and murders while his supernatural

Conclusion
Real love always wins, especially if we have to fight very hard to get it.
Do you like the book?
I liked the book very much because it is a novel with a good amount
of mystery, suspense and romanticism. The cruel events which
took place in this novel show how dangerous a creature full of
hatred and lacking love in his childhood can be. With an unexpected
twist to the story, this monster surprises the reader showing his
intense feeling of love towards his lover.
“Funeral Blues”
by A.W.Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drumBring out
the coffin,
let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He is Dead’.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public
doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now;
put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
