From six new lanes on I-75 to a new toll plaza on the Fort Myers side
of the Cape Coral Bridge, motorists are dodging warning cones and
zigzagging into temporary lanes at road projects throughout Lee
County.

At a cost into the hundreds of millions of dollars when they're all
finished, expanded roadways from the southern reaches of the county
to the Caloosahatchee River will make it easier and safer for drivers
to navigate the streets and highways, especially when the population
swells to more than 600,000 as part-time residents arrive.
State, county and city officials, road builders and law enforcement
officers are involved in moving the projects along. Business owners
and drivers are trying to cope.

Department of Transportation, is one of the most prominent
construction jobs under way among several dozen in Lee County that
include everything from new bridges to landscaping and "road
beautification."
FDOT spokeswoman Debbie Tower said there are some unique
problems associated with this 2.5-mile project.
"What makes it difficult to build," she said, "is that there is not a lot of
room. We are committed to keeping two lanes open. It's very tight for
workers."
Leilani Ocelnik said she's seen "several accidents" in the construction
zone that has turned the road into a parking lot.
"We have been emphasizing safety," Tower said. "Even a fender
bender can send traffic into lengthy delays."
When the roadwork is completed in the summer of 2013, it will be the
final six-lane link between south Fort Myers and Naples along the U.S.
41 corridor.
