RIDER: KORIE KING, OWNER: WHITNEY WELLS, BREEDER: ROBERT OR LOIS BRICKLEY
THE RUNDOWN: KORIE KING
HORSE: Its In The Cards “Paint”
Brown/White Paint Gelding, 14 Years Old, 14 hands, 1040
lbs.
OWNER: Whitney Wells
HORSE HISTORY: He is actually owned by Whitney Wells and
has really beat the odds to be where he is. During Whitney’s
senior year in High School (4 years ag), he flipped over backwards in the pasture and broke both his withers. Then, last
year, he tore his suspensory and wasn’t supposed to be able
to ever run again. Thanks to Dr. Derrick Grant he is back to
running strong. Whitney ran him at the Reunion a week ago
and those were his first runs back from injury. The Josey Jr
World were the first 3 runs that we had together.
I have had a few wins before, when I was 4 years old I won
the All Around at my local club, won the All Around at the
Double J in 2005 and 2006, also right now I am sitting 2nd
in the Louisiana Junior High School Rodeo Ass. in the Barrel
Racing, winning the Rookie All Around there and the Ribbon
Roping as well. (Korie King, age 12)
BIT: Lifter bit
HEADGEAR: None
SADDLE: Circle Y Martha Josey
PAD: Coats Pad by Coats Saddlery
LEG GEAR: We vet wrapped on the leg he tore suspensory
and put polo wrap on just 5 runs before I ran. We use polowraps on all fours.
GRAIN: Omolene 200
SUPPLEMENTS: Hy-Flex Joint Supplement
HAY: Alfalfa
ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: We use ice boots in
the morning up until about 30 minutes before I run and the
magnetic blanket on at night. He gets shod by Randall Wells
(Whitney’s Dad) every 6 weeks with Natural Balance shoes.
TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: I think I’m so small and light the
horses don’t know I am there so they run hard. Peyton Raney
(same as who trained Hot Shot) trained Paint. Whitney is a real
close friend and I appreciate her letting me ride Paint at the
Josey Jr World.

Brazile is PRCA’s $4 Million Cowboy
BRIDGEPORT, TX – It’s hard to say whether it is ironic or absolutely fitting that Trevor Brazile became ProRodeo’s first $4-million cowboy May 14 with his steer roping winnings at the Butterfield Stage Days.
Brazile’s steer roping earnings represent the smallest portion of
his $4,000,397 – less than a quarter – but it was in steer roping that
he earned his first National Finals berth (1997) and where he earned
his first gold buckle in an individual event (2006).
And then there is the matter of the way Brazile is building up his
very substantial lead in the 2011 all-around world standings. His
$46,548 in steer roping is not only more than he has earned in either tie-down roping ($25,305) or team roping ($32,255), it is more
money than has been earned by the world standings leaders in steer
wrestling, team roping (heading or heeling), saddle bronc riding and
tie-down roping.
“I never imagined winning $4 million,” Brazile said. “I was rodeoing with Roy (Cooper) when he crossed $2 million, so that was the
number I dreamed about for a lot of years. I just think it’s cool that
I can win this type of money with a rope in my hand.”
His 2011 all-around total of $104,108 puts him over the $100,000
mark for the 14th consecutive season. Brazile has surpassed
$200,000 in each of the last 10 years (2001-2010) and $300,000 in
each of the last five. --Courtesy of www.prorodeo.com

BVEH Sheds Light on EHV-1
Brazos Valley Equine Hospital – May 16, 2011 – An outbreak
of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHV-1) (neurological
form of herpes virus infection) has been traced to horses who
attended the NCHA’s Western National Championships in Odgen,
Utah on April 30 - May 8, 2011. Affected horses have been publicly
identified in California, Colorado, and Washington. The University
of Washington has voluntarily closed their large animal clinic due
to identification of a positive horse. Additional states have possible cases pending and/or are looking for animals that attended
the event and returned home. Texas does not currently have any
confirmed positives and the state veterinary office is working on
identifying all the horses that attended the show in Utah and then
traveled to the state. If your clients were at that event the possibility
exists that they could have been exposed to this virus. Additionally
horses returning from Utah were exposed to horses that subsequently traveled to the Breeders Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma
and likely other weekend events. On May 14, 2011 in a precautionary move to ensure the health and safety of horses, the Breeder’s
Invitational Board of Directors cancelled the BI Aged Event and
the NCHA cancelled the Mercuria World Series of Cutting event
that had been scheduled to be conducted in from May 14-28.
BACKGROUND on Equine Herpes Viruses - Five different herpes virus are commonly found in domestic horses. Equine Herpes
Virus (EHV) infection is ubiquitous in the equine population and
most horses are infected in the first few months of life. Following
infection with an EHV, the virus is able to essentially hide from
the immune system in the lymphoid or neurologic tissues; horses
are then said to have a “latent infection.” Once infected with EHV,
horses are thought to be permanently infected. A latent viral infection can become reactivated via currently unknown mechanisms
BARREL RACING REPORT
often during times of stress. Horses with re-activated latent infections are a source of infection for other horses. EHV-1 was one of
the first equine herpes viruses to be described. EHV-1 is termed an
“alpha herpes virus” that can cause severe pneumonia in newborn
foals, mild respiratory disease in young horses and abortion in pregnant mares. The neurologic form of disease is a result of inflammation of the blood vessels surrounding the nervous tissues (i.e., the
spinal cord and brain) leading interrupted function and neuronal
death. The neurologic form of EHV infection is generally referred
to as Equine Herpes Myeoloencephalopathy as both the brain and
spinal cord can be involved. This form of herpes virus infection
can cause clinical signs in any age, breed, or gender of horse. In
many outbreaks (~80%) of the neurologic disease a specific mutatation of the DNA polymerase gene can be identified. EHV are
specific to the horse and are not contagious to people.
TRANSMISSION: Horse to horse transmission of the herpes viruses is significant when horses are kept in close contact. However,
contaminated equipment (e.g., water buckets, water hose handles,
cleaning and grooming equipment etc) can be a source of infection
and people can transmit the virus on their hands or clothes. An
infected horse will excrete and aerosolize the virus in respiratory
secretions. All horses with clinical signs are expected to be contagious, although horses not showing any clinical signs can shed EHV.
Neurologic horses shed large quantities of virus and should be
securely isolated. The virus is estimated to be viable for up to 7 days
in the environment under normal circumstances but may remain
viable for a maximum of one month under perfect conditions. The
virus is easily killed in the environment by most disinfectants.
MAY 17, 2011
EHV-1 Continued on Page 7
PAGE 6
EHV-1 Continued From Page 6
DIAGNOSIS: Once exposed and infected with EHV the virus
may be detected in blood and nasal swabs for 21 and 14 days
respectively. Virus shedding maybe more transient and difficult to
detect in the latter stages of disease. Horses can develop clinical
signs as early as 1 day after exposure to the virus but clinical signs
can be delayed up to 10 days after exposure. Nasal shedding may
be prolonged (21+ days) in cases infected with certain neuropathic
strains of EHV-1. Infection usually develops following exposure to
a horse shedding the virus but in a small percentage of cases, infection occurs by reactivation of latent virus. EHV typically causes a
biphasic fever peaking on day 1 or 2 and again on day 6 or 7. With
respiratory infections there is often significant nasal and ocular discharge, but not a lot of coughing. There may be some enlargement
of submandibular lymph nodes. With the neurologic form there is
typically minimal respiratory signs, with fever (rectal temperature
greater than 102°F) being the only warning. Neurologic disease appears suddenly and is rapidly progressive reaching its peak intensity
in 2-3 days. In horses infected with the neurologic strain of EHV-1,
clinical signs may include: nasal discharge, incoordination, hind
end weakness, recumbency / paralysis, lethargy, urine dribbling,
decreased tail tone, and/or head tilt.
Horses that show a fever and any of these signs should be isolated
and examined by your veterinarian. Diagnosis of equine herpes
myeoloencephalopathy is based on clinical signs and isolation of
the virus or detection of viral DNA. Samples collected from the
nasal passages and whole blood (in EDTA) should be submitted to
evaluate for shedding in the respiratory tract and presence of the
virus in the blood.
PREVENTION: For all of the equine herpes viruses, vaccination
is not fully protective. An effective immune response requires local
antibody production in the nasal mucosa, systemic antibody pro-
BARREL RACING REPORT
duction, and a cell mediated immune response. No current vaccine
achieves all of these measures. Current EHV vaccines may reduce
the amount of the virus shed in secretions of the respiratory tract,
but does not protect against the neurologic form. Unfortunately,
boostering well vaccinated horses during an outbreak is not helpful.
Vaccinations 14 days prior to exposure is not likely to be harmful,
and may help limit the spread of the disease.
BIOSECURITY: Horses with confirmed equine herpes myeoloencephalopathy should be isolated. Strict hygiene and biosecurity measures should be implemented because the virus can be aerosolized.
Exposed horse must also be isolated to control spread of the virus.
Based on an analysis of a recent outbreak at Colorado State, the authors concluded horses with active nasal EHV-1 shedding should be
isolated in an airspace that is separate from other horses by strictly
enforced biosecurity and isolation procedures.
If it is necessary to admit a horse to a farm with ongoing cases,
they should be current on EHV-1 vaccination and isolated away
from the resident population. The neuropathic strain of EHV-1
can also cause abortion and location of pregnant mares should be
considered during an outbreak.
Veterinary care for suspect horses should be performed on the
farm as much as possible to prevent spread of the disease. A detailed history should be provided on the movement of the patient,
as well as, movement of other horses at the facility. Knowledge of
the vaccination history (type and date) is also important. If your
horse is showing any clinical signs or has a unexplained fever, do
not move the horse.
TREATMENT: The prognosis after infection is dependent on the
severity of the neurologic symptoms. The disease spreads quickly
and can have high morbidity and mortality. There is little scientific

evidence to support specific therapies and treatment is mostly
empirical. Most cases are treated symptomatically, although some
practitioners have used antiviral therapy. Neurologic or recumbent
horses can be maintained in a sling for a short period of time. Acyclovir, Valcyclovir and Ganciclovir are drugs that have been studied
in horses. Acyclovir is the least expensive but the efficacy is very
variable as the drug is poorly absorbed from the GI tract. Giving
the drug intravenously improves its effect, but is associated with
some side effects. Valcyclovir and Ganciclovir are more effective
drug but also more expensive. If an antiviral agent is used it should
be given early in the course of the disease, preferably before the
onset of neurologic symptoms.
PROGNOSIS: A recent outbreak in a stable in Findlay, Ohio is
described: Of the 135 horses exposed, 117 (86%) had some clinical signs. Neurologic deficits were identified in 46 (39%) of the
affected horses. 12 horses did not survive. The authors concluded
being > 5 years of age, having had a rectal temperature of > 103.5
degrees F, and highest rectal temperature occurring on or after
the 3rd day of the febrile period were the factors most predictive
of the development of neurologic disease and death. Horses that
remain standing have a good prognosis for recovery and improvement is generally seen in a few days. However it may takes months
to over a year before a horse is completely recovered and returned
to its previous level of performance. Some horses may be left with
permanent residual neurologic deficits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
BARREL RACING REPORT
Q: Should I travel to any shows?
A: We are currently cautioning owners and trainers from traveling
until more information is known. This is still a very fluid situation with new information being released daily. If you do decide
to travel to a show, take only essential horses and practice strict
biosecurity protocols. Horses should be boostered with a herpes
vaccine 2 weeks prior to traveling to a show. As more information is
available and a more appropriate recommendation can be made, we
will update this information.
Q: What should I be doing for my horses that have traveled to a
show and possibly been exposed?
A: Take rectal temperatures on all horses twice daily. Do not share
equipment between horses. Wash your hands frequently and use
hand sanitizers. Do not put the hose handle under water in the
water bucket. Empty and clean water buckets daily. Prevent nose to
nose contact or sharing water sources with other horses. Contact a
veterinarian and isolate the horse if any horse shows clinical signs
or is running a fever.
Q: I had horses at the show in Utah, what should I do?
A: Isolate the horses from the rest of your farm and monitor rectal
temperatures twice daily for 28 days. Consider closing your farm
to all incoming and outgoing horse traffic for 28 days. Contact the
Texas Animal Health Commission and your veterinarian to have the
horses tested. It is possible that a horse exposed at the show that
has not shown any clinical symptoms is spreading the virus to other
horses on your farm.
Q: My horse is running a fever, what should I do?
A: Isolate the horse immediately. Contact your veterinarian for
diagnostic testing and possible antiviral therapy. The sooner the

antiviral therapy is started the better we anticipate the outcome. Do
not move sick horses off premise until we have more information
about the spread of the disease. Call for veterinary attention. Do
not move horses with unexplained fevers without veterinary advice.
Q: Should I vaccinate my horses before the show?
A: This is a controversial question. If the exposure to an infected
horse is anticipated within the next 14 days, boostering the vaccine
will not help and may be detrimental. Boostering vaccines more
than two weeks out is unlikely to cause a problem and may provide
some benefit.
Q: What about immune stimulants?
A: Use of immune stimulants prior to exposure may be helpful, but
use as part of therapy may be detrimental.
Q: What about L-lyseine, or Aspirin?
A: Neither have been studied in equine herpes virus, but they
make logical sense to use in high risk horses or early in the disease
process.
Q: Will this impact interstate travel?
A: There will most likely be some restriction on travel by individual
states. Be sure to check with your state of destination and origin
prior to leaving and give yourself enough time to get any required
testing completed.
BARREL RACING REPORT
Q: How much does treatment cost and what is the duration of
treament?
A: Treatment costs will vary depending on the drugs used. If antiviral therapies are used, costs for just those drugs will range from
$900 to $4500 for a 7 day treatment. There are many other drugs
that are used and that does not include diagnostic testing, veterinary
care, caring for the patient, and loss of income secondary to quarantines. It is much cheaper to be vaccinated and avoid exposure.

Pierce and Dillon Top Two
THE RUNDOWN: CARLEE PIERCE
HORSE: Rare Dillion “Dillon”
Buckskin Gelding, 11 Years Old, 15 hands, 1050 lbs.
HORSE HISTORY: I recently purchase Dillon from Annesa Self. She
did all the work on him, bought him as a 2 year old and has had
him ever since. She approached me about him and said she was
thinking about selling him but wanted to hand pick who got him.
Annesa was slowing down her rodeo schedule so that she could
keep up with her 13 year old son’s baseball games. He recently got
the chance to play for the Highland Village Storm and she wanted
to be there for the games. Annesa wanted Dillon to have a chance
to go to the NFR again and make someone else’s dream come
true and thought I would be a good fit. She is still going to go to
circuit rodeos but didn’t want to go all over the country. I went to
her house all day long and I just rode him all over the pasture and
around her pond and loped through the pattern. Then we went to a
jackpot, exhibitioned that night and ran what would have been close
to an arena record. We just clicked right away. Our first rodeo run
was at Corpus Christi and we ran second and won over $4000. Then
I ran him at Guymon and hit a barrel to win the first round by 2
tenths and the average. The BBR Finals were my first big barrel race
on him and we placed 4th in the Finals there. Now, this weekend we
won 2 rodeos. We are just really clicking. I plan to go through the
4th of July and see where I am at. If I can be in the top 25 I will
try to make the NFR. I plan on entering Reno and all the big 4th of
July rodeos. I have found both Blue Moon Fling and Rare Dillion
run good inside or out, so I am pretty lucky that way. This way I can
use Blue Moon Fling, who is only a 5 year old sparingly and let her
get seasoned for another year or two before she has to go to that
many rodeos.
BIT: Jim Warner Hackamore
HEADGEAR: None
SADDLE: Master Barrel Saddle
PAD: 5 Star Wool Pad
LEG GEAR: Relentless by Pro Choice
GRAIN: Purina Ultium
SUPPLEMENTS: Myristol, Ulcerguard when I am hauling him or Blue
Moon Fling
HAY: Alfalfa morning and night/bermuda free choice, grazing whenever possible.
ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: I use the Centurion magnetic blanket and the Centurion Neck Piece if I have several runs
in a row and Professional’s Choice magnetic sheet after every run, I
also use the Back on Track magnetic shipping boots. We also use a
Deep Muscle Stimulator whenever I think a horse is sore. It kind of
works like a jackhammer, it will break of scar tissue and helps their

blood flow and the horses really like it.
TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: First of all, I don’t train my horses. I
can take them after someone else trains them. I am very blessed to be
an athletic rider and that allows be to either hustle them or be quiet
on them depending on what they need. My athleticism allows me to
jump ride horse successfully. After you have been around good horses
you learn what you are looking for. I want them to be kind and want
them to run barrels as bad as I do. I definitely like a free style runner
but will ride a push style horse if I think they are capable of winning.
My daily routine at home is to not work them on the barrels, I long
trot the track at home and lope a few circles to keep their muscles
warm and their air good.

Headin’ For Home
T
hough it’s spring now, I’m watching the snow fall this morning...Please pray for me!! (-:
What’s the best way to always overcome? Stay connected
to the vine. I have a gentleman that comes each spring (don’t know
why he’s already been at my house....) and prunes my trees of all the
dead stuff. Then the cute little green buds come out all over the living branches (they are screaming in horror as I write this) and soon
we have shade! What a process!
It’s the same way with the Word of God and how it affects
us! When we are connected to God by reading and DOING His
Word, we just bet better. The problems in life are taken care of with
the answers He gives and are solved in peace. But if we choose to
do our own thing and walk away from God we’ll get lukewarm and
disconnect from the vine. Friend, in that condition we will dry up
and die. With trees, if that happens, the part that is not attached
is toast, kaput, chopped up and no more! With God though, if we
By Shery Morrison
Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)
have walked away from Him, we can still be grafted back to the vine
and flourish! What a great deal!
I know warm weather is coming. I know that morning follows
night. I know how much God loves you and me. He is not willing to
let us go. He is calling on our heart to stay attached to Him. That’s
where the life is. I want that life. I want it for you, too. I know
where that life is. It’s not hidden, it’s not a secret and it’s certainly
not hard to find. This is a no brainer! It’s in the Bible. And certainly
it’s more comforting then that white stuff piling up outside.
God bless you and keep you!
