Prime Cattle Auctioneer Richard Turner. Lighter show of prime cattle, young bulls
similar trade to last week with more premium grade but very few black and white
bulls. Good show of premium heifers and steers similar trade. Continental cows
good trade as were half of the dairy culls but leaner types harder to sell. Schools
start next week so we should see a better trade for lean cows!

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon.
Settle farmers John & James Dugdale took the Jack Eddleston trophy home after
selling their 31 litres pedigree heifers at £1880 to Redmayne’s of Samlesbury.
Another father and son team from Eldroth saw David & George Whitewell take
£1820 for their 1st prize cow which went to Tom Green of Wigan. P Knowles of
Kendal was next highest price at £1660 to JJ & JD Graves, Carlisle. The trade was
generally much slower than the last three weeks with lots of respectable heifers
between £1200-£1400. There is a lot of enthusiasm around the ring but we really
do need some more money into farmer’s bank accounts. A run of long dated incalf heifers sold above expectations making up to £1120 to David Shuttleworth.
Bulling heifers were a mixed bag and some smart weaned calves from Maurice
Johnson at £420 were nicely sold. Next week is Westmorland Show we are
expecting 20 milkers but no youngstock or dispersals

321 calves and stirks today with 48 Blue bulls between £180 and £480 selling to
regulars, locals and buyers from as far afield as Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Wales!
35 Blue heifers from £160 to £385 were generally less money than last week as
arable men still busy.
98 black and white bulls – only the best above £100 today. Angus bulls remain
good to sell.
Blue and Limousin bullocks and nice cow making sorts of heifers got away well
but some others straight off their mothers would look value for money today.

Less cow and calf outfits, similar trade to last fortnight topping at £1960 for a young Angus
cow with Blue x show calf for Messrs Riding. Less young bulls with top price of £1260 for a
Blue x young bull from Messrs Wilkinson. More stores about with less strong cattle topping
£1100 consistently. Quality yearling steers and heifers £800 to £950, middle quality heifers
averaging £700 and less forward store steers at £850 average looked a good trade for grade
0+ finishers.

Busiest Saturday of the year. A huge thank you to all the yard staff who worked extremely
hard today and thank you to vendors for their patience.
Cast sheep were not as dear as expected but prime lambs 30-52kg averaged 181.3 ppk for all
quality. Well fleshed heavier lambs were most in demand. Smartest types over £2 per kg
regular away. Plenty in the 190ppk region.
Top price of the day was for a 39kg Beltex lamb donated by Ian Smith of Rimington, sold in
aid of Childrens’ Cancer, kindly bought by M N Alam, Lancashire Direct, Halal Meat Ltd,
Blackburn for £150.
Correct Mule and Texel X ewes generally £60-£70. Younger 3 and 4 crops £70-£90. Correct
Swaledale ewes £60.
Texel shearlings generally £100-£130. A nice pen of Beltex made £158 and best Texels £155.
Gimmer lambs next – Blue Texels made £135, £102. 98 Texels sold to a high of £100 and
averaged £70 for all quality. Mule gimmers £110 and averaged £85.
Results of the show and sale kindly sponsored by Laurence Pierce (Wool Merchants) Ltd
below.
Store lambs in demand topping at £75, plenty bang on £60 and averaging £53 right through
for all quality.

Following in the footsteps of his father
Tom, Gordon Haynes of Mitton was
deservedly awarded first and second
places with his homebred Mule
gimmer lambs at Gisburn today.
Gordon has been coming to Gisburn
since ‘short pant days’ and would no
doubt have been acquainted with
John Holt, father of today’s sponsor
Grace Dobson of Laurence Pierce
(Wool Merchants) Ltd. Third placed
Mules went to Taylor Bros of Tosside
followed by C & M Crawshaw,
Trawdena and P Leeming of
Cononley.
Pictured above left to right: judge Robert Johnson & daughter, Gordon Haynes and sponsor
of today’s show, Grace Dobson of Laurence Pierce (Wool Merchants) Ltd.
D & L Coar of Darwen took first prize in the Continental section selling at £80 to the judge D
Shimwell. These were followed by pens of ten at £74 and £73 selling to K Marshall.
Having just missed the show two smart pens of both cross
bred and pure Texel gimmer lambs were brought in by
Bernard Slater of Chipping which sold for £93 and £86
going to Altrincham (pictured right).
A pen of 9 Texel X and an odd pure Texel gimmer lambs
from Dorothy Doyle, Swinbank & Doyle of Tosside topped
£92 and the pen averaged £85 (pictured left).

per head. Commercial Types 180p/Kg – 190p/Kg and very easily sold to a ringside
of 13 buyers representing 18 outlets. Mule lambs selling well at £25-£30 above
their weights or 185p/Kg. Lightweight lambs found a good following from a few
store and feeding men also a good trade.
Ewes seem to be out in numbers across England and followed suit today would
look a shade easier on the weeks before. Topping at £114 for best Texels.

Another big turnout today with cattle to suit every taste. We had a great show of
pedigree heifers with Philip Critchley, Wrea Green taking the Champion and
Reserve places. His champion made £1900 to Richard Clayton and the Reserve
Champion made £1920 to David Walmsley, Downham. Philips average for 4
heifers was £1845.
Malcolm Fell had a great show of 8 topping at £1740 and £1710. G W Whitwell
took 1st and 2nd places in the cow class selling to Davis at £1550 and and £1500
twice with all three going to Hill & Davis, Wrexham.
Non registered winner was J G Hall selling at £1500 to Wick Williams. Trade for
second quality heifers was more of a challenge with a whole raft of usable types
from £1290 to £1350.
In-calf heifers from Angela Middleton, Wigton were well bid for and she has
established a good reputation from regular bidders for what can only be described
as cracking heifers. They peaked at £1290 to D Shuttleworth with five others over
£1200.
Bulling heifers were a mixed show but Philip Baldwin, Brindle had two away at
£800 each to T & C Robinson.
Heifer calves were the trade of the day with David Mattinson averaging £295 for
three.
NEXT WEEK is the usual weekly sale and we expect 25 to 30 milkers.
Ask to be added to our dedicated Dairy Mailing List for sale reports, news and
forthcoming sales and events.

Calf Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick
181 calves of which 55 were blue. Bulls and heifers notably dearer than recently.
Plenty of bulls above £400 and top of the tree was Duncan Tattersall at £470.
Blue heifers ranged widely from £225-£410, the better sorts £330+ time and time
again.
63 black and white bulls averaged £60, only the best above £100. Simmentals,
Limousins, Angus and Herefords all good to sell. Our TB4s in particular demand
to go to Scotland.
Stirk Auctioneer: Will Alexander
An entry of 44 stirks followed the calves today. A busy ringside of farmer buyers
keenly bid on all classes. A nice run of Blues from Gary Pickup sold to £740 twice
for bullocks and £710 for heifers. Top price of the day was £845 for a Shorthorn
Heifer from E & J Haythornthwaite. Alan Lambert showed Lim bullocks to £710
and heifers to £665. Only a handful of Black and Whites forward sold to £365 for
bullocks from AV Wallbank & Son and averaged £335.
Next stirk sale in a fortnight and a polite reminder to vendors to please ring the
office 01200 441351 by the Tuesday lunch time with numbers for advertising.

Auctioneer’s comment:
A smaller show of prime lambs this week after ethnic festivals have been and gone
last week. Lambs, however, a better than anticipated trade, especially meated and
farm assured lambs. Running at 185 p/kg for the first half of the sale but then
dropped off as quality dwindled. With 10 buyers present ringside averages would
meet with other centres today.
Ewes would be the trade of the month with a clash of buyers and up £10 -£20 per
head across the board for all types and qualities.

Auctioneer Rachel Capstick
The busiest Saturday of the year with every pen full!
There was a distinct lack of well meated prime lambs this morning – those that were sold well
enough in the 190pences, let’s see if we can get more nicely fleshed 40-45kg lambs next
Saturday – they are what is wanted!
Breeding ewes next. Correct ewes sold to a decent trade.
Shearlings were as expected. Better sorts of Texels could do £130-£150, others generally
£100-£120, Mules similar. Swaledale shearlings from Andrew Atkinson sold to a packed ring
topping at £122.
Today was our second show and sale of both Mule and Continental gimmer lambs kindly
sponsored by Carrs Billington and judged by Peter Fox (schedule below).
The general concensus of expert opinion was that the Mule gimmer trade in
Gisburn today compared favourably to other centres in the North of England
during these past couple of weeks.
The best Continental gimmers got away very well. Outwith the show, highlights included pure
Texels from Keith Parker to £260, Rouge from Mrs Capstick (no relation) to £112! Tom Brass
from Appleby topped at £74 for his run of Lleyn gimmers. Some second quality gimmers
would actually be better sold in the prime or store sections.
Store lambs were simply a right trade. The new penning system encouraged
vendors to show in bigger lots and this was well received by buyers.
A massive thanks to all the staff today who worked very hard indeed to make
things run as smoothly as possible.
The new unloading system worked much better but, please please do not abandon vehicles
on the docks!

Steers and heifers were a straight trade with most regular buyers in attendance.
Young bulls were a good trade with continentals similar to last week and black and
white bulls slightly better. Good show of cull cows similar trade to last week but
middle quality a touch less.

Calf Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick
231 calves and stirks forward.
48 Blue bulls selling as far away as Anglesey and Norfolk. The sweeter the calf
the better they sold today. 35 Blue heifers between £170-£385, something for
everyone, but the better sorts above £300 all day including some lovely runs from
David Shuttleworth £385, £342 x 2, £335 and £325. Joss Lancaster £340, £330,
£322, £318 x 2 to name a few.
Nice Simmental bulls particularly from Alec Simpson and David Mattinson – bulls
£400, £368 and £355 and heifers at £330, £305, £290, £285, £280 and £278.
A shortage of Limousins today, but what we had sold very well. Angus and
Herefords as good as ever.
It’s just the black and whites at the moment which seem to be taking a knock. The
best £100+, very few in the £60-£80 bracket, plenty of bobbies reducing the
overall average to £41.
6 stirks turned up on an off week and all sold well. We expect 50 plus to follow
the calves next Thursday.

Auctioneer Rachel Capstick:
Another choc-a-block Saturday sheep yard. Today the emphasis was on horned and hill going
sheep in the breeding section.
Cast sheep started the morning followed by prime lambs. Several pens made over the £2
per kilo mark from Lynne Marsden (222.5p, 205p, 201p x 2; Robert Canning 216p and 210p
and Janet Parrington 207p). Plenty in the 190’s and averaged a pleasing 177p/kg for all
quality and all weights.
Breeding Ewes set off with Mule and Texels and were a straight trade and Cheviots good to
sell.
Ian Grisedale from Milton, Crooklands nr Milnthorpe judged the show classes which were
kindly sponsored by Armstrong Watson Accountants, Business & Financial Advisers.
In the Swaledale ewe class Mark and Sue Throup from Malham retained the Frank Wade
Perpetual Trophy and their pen of ten 3-crop ewes went on to sell for £94. Jim Baines of
Trawden got second place achieving £120 for his 3-crops to Alec Wade. T Robinson & Son,
Catlow Farm came in third at £102 to Richard Mawson, Addingham. Overall, correct
Swaledale ewes averaged £78.
The Swaledale shearlings were won again by V A Fielding, Littleborough at £108. Next
was Ted Fox, Hawes at £82 and in third place was John Hartley, Pendle at £125. Overall
average £92.60.
Alan Greenwod, Trawden was placed first in the Lonk class and received the Nathan Wade
trophy. His 3-crop ewes went on to sell for £94 to Alec Wade. Second prize went to T
Robinson & Son, Catlow Farm at £71 and Nicholas Pinder in third at £53. Overall correct
Lonk average £59.
Anthony Thompson, Foulridge was placed first in the other breed of Hill Going Shearling
class. His pen of smart Gritstones made £148.00. David and Rachel Capstick, Hellifield
achieved and £152.00 for their second placed pen of Cheviots and in third Jonathan Turner
made £94.00 of his Scotch Black Faced shearlings.
The new addition to today’s fixture was the inaugural show of Herdwicks. Outside of the
livestock markets in the Lake District where else could you find such a selection? Herdwicks
were brought to sell from as far as the North of Scotland to Lincolnshire and sold to a packed
audience, going locally, back to Cumbria and as far away as Wrexham!
A & M Brennand & Son, Chapel-le-Dale’s first prize 3-crop ewes went to ten year old Thomas
Capstick, Hellifield for £84.00. Andrew Newhouse, Tosside won second and third prizes
selling at £69.00 and £58.00. Top Price 3 and 4 crop ewes were for a pen of four from Jack
Shepherd, Pately Bridge at £90.00. Frank Brennand also won the best pen of 5 Herdwick
shearlings which sold for £115.00 and his third prize shearlings £90.00. It was Arnold
Lancaster, Torver’s second prize Herdwick shearlings that made the top price of £125.00.
The surprise of the day was, however, a 3-shear ram from Andrew Newhouse, Tosside which
sold for £500!
The rest of the shearlings sold next and Jonathan Turner took over the rostrum for a while. By
all accounts all breeds were much better to sell than recently as were gimmer lambs.
Highlights included Texels from F & H J Booth, Wigglesworth at £196 and £182. Mr G W Hall,
Coniston-with-Kilnsey topped at £135 with Jacobs at £135 to year six pupil, Mary Throup, who
goes to Kirkby Malham Primary School.
Chilled out Rachel returned for the store lambs! What a difference penning up in the cattle
building has made by virtually forcing vendors to present their store lambs in bigger numbers.
This is what buyers want where possible. We Flew through these to a top of £77.50. Loads
of pens in the £60’s and overall average of £58.00 for all quality.

Prime Cattle Auctioneer Richard Turner
Good number of young bulls forward, with full audience and similar trade to
previous week. Less heifers forward meeting a good trade but steers harder to sell.
Cull cows harder to sell but good throughput with trade good on the week, despite
two missing customers.

Calf Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick
A marathon day in the calf department with 391 calves and stirks forward.
42 Blue bull calves – Alan Bowker, Cowling topped with a quartet at £560 and
again out of the 40 Blue heifers with a pair at £425. All classes a good trade with
plenty of choice. Black and white bulls better to sell than of late.
Lots more Limousins about today than some weeks, selling as far apart as
Scotland and Norfolk! Less Angus and Herefords forward, but both bulls and
heifers sold very well to a packed audience. Simmental calves in demand with
the majority heading to Wales.
The stirks which followed were a mixed bag of
both dairy and suckler bred goods of a variety of
breeds and ranging in age from 4 months
upwards, providing something for everyone.
Charolais, Blue, Limousin, Angus, Shorthorn
and Black & White – you name it, we had it!
NEXT STIRK SALE is 13th October and the fortnight after on Thursday 27th is a
STIRK SHOW – please advise the office of likely entries 01200 441351

Auctioneer’s comment:
A similar show of Lambs this week averaged up very well considering a fall in price
across other centres this week. Fleshy lambs continue to sell well whilst under
finished lambs lack premium prices. Comercial texel lambs out of mules would
consistently sell at 170p/Kg to 175p/Kg. Farm assured lambs getting away well
today with 10 buyers ringside.
Ewes forward in numbers as is the story nationwide, proving harder to cash and
would be less money on the day.
