A much bigger crowd round the dairy ring with renewed enthusiasm. PT & MR Critchley’s heifer sold for £2920 to pedigree
breeder William Oldfield, Gisburn. Regular winner Colin Singleton had to be happy with second place but made a very
respectable £2620 to JJ & JD Graves, Carlisle. TB Eastham achieved £2400 to J Pickervance, Brindle. In the non registered
entry Philip Baldwin made £2320 to RJ Mason, Pilling. Nearly all the milkers were claimed by farmers with regular agents
struggling to get a bid. A strong entry of youngstock saw many new faces around the ring bidding for David Graveston’s annual
consignment setting a firm trade which averaged £1020. Heifer calves were a varied selection with Brown Swiss calves selling
for £210 and a calf from David Mattinson out of a Alian made £450. Next week’s sale has 15 cattle entered to date…

Young Handlers Cattle Overwintering Competition Show & Sale Results
RACHEL HARRISON, a Slaidburn young farmer’s club member & currently studying A Levels at Nelson & Colne College was
crowned supreme champion of Gisburn’s Over Wintering competition last Friday evening. The pre-sale show was co-judged by
Alan Coates, Hurst Green, a keen advocate of young farmers and last year’s show winner-Clare Cropper, Long Preston who is
well know on both the local and national show cattle circuit. The judges selected 16 year old Miss Harrison as the winner
having earlier in the evening, picked up first prize in the best female animal shown by a competitor aged 12-16 years and
second prize rosette in the best Young Farmers Club member class with her 14 month old British Blue heifer, presented to the
highest possible standard. The heifer, purchased last autumn for £990, sold for £1360, leaving her a gross margin profit of
£370, selling to the co-judge Miss Cropper-the animal will join her 2014 summer cattle show team. Year 10 Settle College pupil
Eddie Holgate, a member of Rathmell YFC impressed the judges with his knowledge and stockmanship awarding him the
prestigious best Young Farmers Club members trophy, which is kindly supported by Gisburn Young Farmers Club, with club
members acting as show stewards on the evening. Pendle Young Farmers Club member and pupil at Saint Christopher School,
Accrington-Jessica Howard , Burnley was delighted to win the reserve champion award with her 12 month Blonde d'Aquitaine
heifer which sold for £1070, leaving her a gross margin profit of £320. Having earlier in the show picked up the first prize rosette
in the best handled animal shown by a competitor 12-16 years and second prize for best female animal shown by a competitor
aged 12-16 years. Gisburn Young Farmers Club member, 14 year old, Jack Crocker, was awarded winner of best male animal
shown by a competitor 12-16 years old with his thirteen month old, black Limousin cross bull. Freddie Shorrock, Burnley aged
just nine years old, handled his eleven month old, BB heifer perfectly, picking up the red rosette in the best handled animal
shown by a competitor under 11 years old. He attracted a great deal of interest and was described by the co-judge, Miss
Cropper “Certainly one to watch out for in the future”. Ben Sutcliffe, Grindleton picked up best male animal shown by a
competitor under 11 years, whilst brother Harry Sutcliffe, a pupil at Gisburn Primary School won the daily live weight gain class
with his seven month old Charolais heifer. Narrowly beating last year’s winner of this class-Nidderdale Young Farmer’s club
member, who could manage second place in this class this year. Sarah Whitley, whose family farm at Summerbridge., picked
up an array of awards for her age group 17-27 year olds, which included the first prize in the best presented animal, second in
the best male animal. Aged just ten years old-Ben Nutter, Fence was delighted to win first prize in both the best female animal
shown by an under 11 years old and highest gross margin award, with his Limousin heifer, purchased for £960 last year which
sold for £1360 leaving him the winning gross margin of £400. Slaidburn Young Farmer Club member- Stuart Hartley, currently at
Bishop Burton College, took time out from studying agriculture to compete with his immaculate, 11 month old Charolais steer,
which picked up the first prize rosette in the 17-27 year old class. Commenting on the show, Jane Chapman, said “Now in its
second year, Gisburn Auction Marts Cattle Over Wintering competition saw young farmers from Lancashire and Yorkshire
compete against each other. This year’s competitors have definitely learnt from last year and greatly improved in the standard
of showing and presentation, which was just great to see. The competition allows young people the opportunity to purchase
cattle at Gisburn Auction Marts in the autumn of last year and feed them through the winter and offer them for show and sale is
certainly a hit with the farmers of the future – it introduces them to the business side of livestock farming”.

With the weather turning a corner and Spring now upon ustrade for ewes with lambs at foot was buoyant at Gisburn
Auction Marts show and sale. Chris Craven’s long journey
from York to Gisburn Auction Marts proved fruitful, when presale show judge George Bell, Kirkby Lonsdale awarded him
the champion rosette at the spring show and sale of ewes with
lambs at foot. The champion pen, a pair of Texel ewes with
smart Beltex lambs at foot sold for £252, going to pastures
new in north Cumbria. James Garth & Son, Keasden,
Clapham was awarded the second prize rosette in the best
Texel ewes with lambs at foot with a striking pair of Texel
ewes with lambs at foot selling for £240 per outfit. Mule
breeder and regular vendor, Richard Mawson, Addingham
swept the board in the Mule section picking up the first prize
rosette and reserve champion award achieving £222, £218 &
£212 for shearlings with twin Texel lambs at foot.
The in lamb section was dominated by Stuart Greenwood who sold Suffolk ewes to £110. Despite being late in the season
John Wood, Trawden headed the store hogg section with Cheviots at £88. A large number of pet lambs forward were clearly
reflected in the price selling to £14 and averaging £8.
