LIST OF USEFUL FACTS AND SERVICES
12.1. México
Our country is the natural link between the United States and Latin America. And, through the signing of 10 trade
treaties that grant a preferred access to 31 countries in three continents - among them the North American Free
Trade Agreement with the U.S. and Canada, as well as those signed with the European Union, Chile, Brazil and
Argentina - México has access to a potential market of more than 860 million consumers and is consolidating
itself as one of the most important emerging economies in the world.
12.2. Morelia & Michoacán
Morelia is a city and municipality located in the north central part of the state of Michoacán in central Mexico. The
city is located in the Guayangareo Valley and is the capital of the state. The main pre-Hispanic cultures here were
the P'urhépecha and the Matlatzinca, but no major cities were founded in the valley during this time. The Spanish
took control of the area in the 1520s. The Spanish under Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza founded a settlement here
in 1541 with the name of Valladolid, which became rival to the nearby city of Pátzcuaro for dominance in
Michoacán. In 1580, this rivalry ended in Valladolid’s favor and it became the capital of the colonial province. After
the Mexican War of Independence, the city was renamed Morelia in honor of José María Morelos y Pavón, who is
from here. In 1991, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well preserved colonial buildings
and layout of the historic center.

ISDE 2010
Michoacán (Spanish pronunciation: [mit!oa"kan]) is located in the center west of Mexico, stretching from the
Pacific Ocean to the central highlands of the country. Its capital is Morelia. The name Michoacán is from Nahuatl
and means "place of the fishermen" referring to those who fish on Lake Pátzcuaro. In pre-Hispanic times, the area
was the home of the P'urhépecha Empire, which rivaled the Aztec Empire when the Spanish arrived. After the
Spanish conquest, the empire soon became a separate province which became smaller over the colonial period.
The state and several of its residents played a major role in the Mexican War of Independence. Today, the state
is still home to a large population of P'urhépecha people as well as Otomis and Nahuas. The economy is based
on agriculture, fishing, mining and some industry. The major tourism draw for the state is the Lake Pátzcuaro
area, which was the center of the P'urhépecha empire.
The state is located in the center west of the Mexican Republic, on the extreme southwest of the central
highlands. It borders the states of Mexico, Querétaro, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Colima, with a 217 km
coastline on the Pacific Ocean. The state has a territory of 58,836.95 km2, making it the sixth largest in Mexico. In
addition, it also has 1490 km2 of marine territory off its Pacific coast.
The state is crossed by the Sierra Madre del Sur, the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and the Inter-mountain Valleys
region. The Sierra Madre del Sur crosses the state northwest to southeast for approximately 200 km in the
southwest between the municipalities of Chinicuila and Arteaga along the Pacific Coast. It is considered to be a
continuation of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Peaks in this range average about 2,900masl, with the largest being
the Cerro de las Canoas. The Mexican Trans Volcanic Belt crosses the state from west to east toward the Toluca
Valley and Valley of Mexico. This mountain range is marked by appearance of many volcanoes, both active and
dead. This system is subdivided into regions such as the Sierra de Tancítaro, Sierra de Periban, Sierra de San
Angel and others. The best known volcano in this region is the Paricutín volcano.
The state has a considerable natural system of waterways, including parts of two of the country's largest rivers,
the Lerma and the Balsas. These waterways are divided into three regions, called the North, Central and South.
The North region includes the Lerma Basin. On the Lerma River is the Tepuxtepec Dam which has a capacity of
371 million m3. Rivers that empty in to the Lerma in Michoacan include the Tlalpuhahua, Cachivi and Duero.
Another river basin here is that of Cuitzeo Lake, which extends over an area of 3,618 m2. The two main rivers
that feed this lake are the Grande de Morelia and Queréndaro.
The Central region is represented by Patzcuaro and Zirahuán Lakes. Patzcuaro Lake has a surface area of 1,525
km2. This lake is fed by a number of surface and subterranean water flows with the principle rivers leading here
including the San Gregorio and Chapultepec. This lake has five islands within it called Janitzio, Yunuén, La
Pacanda, Tecuén, Jarácuaro, Urandén and Carián. Zirahuén Lake has an area of 615 km2 and is fed by streams
such as Manzanilla and Zinamba. These two lakes are considered to be the main tourist attraction of the state.[8]
Most of the state's rivers and streams are located in the South region of the state, with the Balsas River being the
most important. The most important tributaries of this river include the Cutzamala, Carácuaro and Tepalcatepec
rivers. Within this region is the coastal watershed, which is the area between the Sierra Madre del Sur and the
coastline. This area includes small rivers such as the Coahuayana, Aquila, Ostula, Motín del Oro, Coire, Cachán
and Nexpa which flow directly into the Pacific.
Much of the climate of the state is determined by altitude and other geographical features. Average temperatures
vary from 13 °C to 29 °C. Lower temperatures correspond with the highland areas in the north and east which the
lower south and west, called La Costa (the coast) or Tierra Caliente (hot lands) register the higher temperatures.
In the hotter lowlands, high temperatures regularly exceed 30 °C and have been known to reach over 40 °C in the
summer. The lowest temperatures are registered highlands areas such as the Sierra de Coalcoman and the
Sierra del Centro located near the border with the State of Mexico. Except for the Tierra Caliente, most of the
state can experience freezing temperatures in the winter. Rainfall is also dependent on altitude with the lowlands
receiving less rain than the mountain areas. There is a well-defined rainy season which extends from June to
October over the entire state.
Ecosystems vary by altitude. Between 2600 and 3500 masl, most of the vegetation is conifer forests. Between
1000 and 2600, there are mixed forests and below this is broadleaf or tropical forests. There are some areas
which are grassland, mostly located in the north and northeast of the state. Animal types vary from region to
region but among mammals can be found skunks, raccons, cacomixtle, rabbits, armadillos, mountain lions, and
foxes. Numerous bird species can be found including water fowl such as ducks, storks and seabirds along the
coast. Reptiles, amphibians and fish can be found in the waterways and along the coast.

12.3. Tips From A to Z
AIRPORTS
It is not possible to take baggage carts out of the arrivals hall at México City airport, although there are porters to
assist with luggage. A tip will be expected. It is also wise to reconfirm all flights in advance.
BANKS & CREDIT CARDS
Banks are generally open from 09:00-16:00 hrs Monday to Friday and a few from 09:00-13:00 hrs on Saturday.
All international credit cards (Visa, Master Card and American Express) are commonly accepted in Morelia.
Most Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) are open 24 hours a day and can be found curb side in banks, some hotel
lobbies and shopping centers. Small businesses in small towns will not take credit cards.
Changing Travelers’ Checks is best done in the morning, as a number of banks will not accept them after
14:00hrs. A passport is also required. For the most favorable rates, change money through banks.
It is somewhat difficult to exchange European currencies in Morelia (including the Euro). The US Dollar is more
easily accepted and exchanged.
BARGAINING
Bargaining is common practice in tourist areas where quoted prices can often be double the value of the goods. In
smaller towns away from the tourist sites, bargaining is not recommended as it can be seen as a lack of civility.
BEHAVIOUR
Basically it is not difficult to act respectably in México; in general people are friendly and quite informal. As with
travel to any foreign country, friendliness and a desire to respect local customs is appreciated.
CLIMATE
The climate is typically tropical, although varies in the different regions of the country. November is the end of the
rainy season and normally cool (20oC) and windy. Occasionally, short tropical rains can be followed by warm
sunshine and 30°C temperatures, while the altitude in Michoacán can see temperatures drop below 15°C at night.
CLOTHING
Although dress code is not an issue in México, we do not suggest any liberal dressing.
CURRENCY
The local currency is the Mexican Peso and approximate exchange rates are (Sept 2010):
1!=
1 GBP =
1 US$ =
16.50 MX Pesos
20.00 MX Pesos
13.00 MX Pesos
Notes in circulation are: 20 (plastic), 50 (plastic), 100, 200 and 500 pesos. Coins in use are 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, 1, 2,
5, and 10 pesos (20 and 100 pesos coins exist but are very rare). You should be aware that 1 and 2 pesos and 10

DRIVING
Cars are left-hand drive in México and you drive on the right side of the road. Remain aware of possible road
hazards such as animals crossing, potholes and the omnipresent speed reducer bumps called “TOPES”. The
right of passage in corners and roundabouts is not observed in México City and surrounding areas and usually
the biggest, or the bravest, goes first. In Morelia, nonetheless, stop signs are “mostly” respected and the
roundabout traffic has always the right of way.
The speed limit in towns is 40 km/h and is indicated everywhere else by road signs.
Highway speeds can vary between 80 to 110 km/h. Speed limits are usually posted.
Carry your Driving License at all times.
Wearing seat belts is compulsory. Mobile phones are not to be used while driving. Hands-free is permitted
ELECTRICITY
The electrical current in México is 110 volts (60 Hz) and sockets accept plugs with two flat parallel pins (American
specification). Most laptop computers operate equally on 110 or 220 volts and only require a travel plug adaptor.
ELEVATION
The mean elevation of the city of Morelia is 1,786 meters above sea level (5,860 ft). The elevation of the special
stages varies from 1,800 to 2,737 meters above sea level.
FESTIVALS
Mexicans celebrate a number of festivals and seasonal events throughout the year and it is worthy of note if

Many international brands can be found in pharmacies. (Please note that some brand names are different:
Maalox to Melox, Zantac to Azantac etc…) However it is always wise to take an adequate amount of your
personal medicines with you.
MOCTEZUMA’S REVENGE
Food in hotels and good restaurants is safe. Be aware that spicy dishes are common in menus and can be VERY
spicy. Foreign visitors should avoid “roadside” restaurants and sub-par eateries. Many visitors get sick by not
sticking to this simple rule. Mexicans call it “Moctezuma’s Revenge”.
Pre-packaged snacks are safe to eat. (Marinela, Bimbo, Sabritas, Barcel)
(See WATER, below)
OPENING HOURS
Most shops are open from 09:00 to 18:00 hrs Monday to Saturday. Major department stores or shopping malls
open from 10:00 to 20:00 hrs seven days a week. In small towns some shops close for lunch from 14:00 to 16:00
hrs. Please note that in México, normal lunchtime is from 14:00hrs to 16:00hrs.
PHOTOGRAPHY
México is a colorful country to photograph. It is of course polite to ask permission before photographing people.
Pictures in some temples are forbidden, and should never be taken during a ceremony.
POPULATION
The total population of México is 111 million, 4.9 million of whom live in the State of Michoacán and 1 million in
Morelia. 29% of the country’s population is under 14 and 6.2% is over 65.
PROTECTION
The high altitude and gentle winds mean sunburn can happen surprisingly quickly. Sunscreen (SPF 25+), a hat,
sunglasses and long sleeve shirts are greatly recommended.
SAFETY
Special caution must be taken when in México City. Avoid unauthorized airport taxis and ask the hotel concierge
for any special safety tips around the area you’ll be staying. When in Morelia, normal safety behavior is

The country is divided into Local Area Codes (LAC) represented in parenthesis called LADA in México.
Dialing from, or to, mobiles (GSM, Digital and Analogue) can be VERY confusing. Please do not hesitate
to ask for assistance.
Please note that “LAC + number” is always 10 digits (XX) XXXX XXXX or (XXX) XXX XXXX
To dial internationally from México, dial: 00 + country code + number
Important Local Area Codes:
México (Country Code): .........52
México City:............................55
Morelia: ...............................443
Veracrúz...............................229
Dialing from:
Using:
Morelia Airport: .......... 443
León: ......................... 477
Tampico: .................... 833
To:
Dial:
outside México ...........any system ................... any city in México ................................... +52 + LAC + number
outside México ...........any system ................... a mobile in México (any)......................... +52 + 1 + LAC + number
México........................a GSM mobile............... anywhere in México (incl. mobiles)......... +52 + LAC + number
México........................a land line .................... a land line in a different LAC .................. 01 + LAC + number
México........................a land line ..................... the same LAC (land line) ........................ number
México........................a local mobile ............... a mobile in the same LAC ...................... LAC + number
México........................a local mobile ............... a mobile in a different LAC ..................... LAC + number
México........................a land line ..................... a mobile in the same LAC ...................... 044 + LAC + number
México........................a land line ..................... a mobile in a different LAC ..................... 045 + LAC + number
TIP: From GSM phones, the best way to call anyone (land or mobile) within Mexico, is dialing in the
international format:
+52 XXX XXX XXXX
If you want to call a mobile in Mexico from outside the country, you have to add a ‘1’ after the country
code:
+52 1 XXX XXX XXXX
