A prayer for the 4th of July
(source unknown)
Dear Lord, there is no greater feeling of liberation than to experience this
freedom from sin and death that you have provided for me through Jesus Christ.
Today my heart and my soul are free to praise you. For this I am very thankful.
On this Independence Day I am reminded of all those who have sacrificed for
my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my
freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that my
freedom was purchased with a very high price. My freedom cost others their very
lives.
Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for
my freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families.
Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you, Lord. Give me the strength to
be a blessing in someone else's life today, and grant me the opportunity to lead
others into the freedom that can be found in knowing Christ. Amen.
overnight hosting. Summertime is always a
challenge to staff because so many people are
out of town, but we pulled it off. The next shared
week falls on the first full week of
October. Please mark your calendars now and
be thinking about how you can participate in this
most important ministry.
Christian Education
CE is in need of Sunday School teachers.
WE have vacancies in just about all ages dealing
with our young people. If God is calling you to
mentor our young people, please let Suzanne
Goodman know. We need leaders for the
elementary classes and the middle and high school
class. Curriculum would be provided so we just
need some folks willing to lead these classes. Our
young people are lots of fun and deserve a great
Christian education.

Volunteers Needed
Our Missions Team is still in need of a
volunteer to coordinate the collection of
eyeglasses and cell phones we have on
hand. Please contact one of us if you can help in
one of both of these areas.
Blessings,
Sherrie Tootill, Jill Campion and Jennifer McCalla
Missions
MISSION POSSIBLE – JULY, 2015
Food of the month for July – Dried food
(rice, pasta, beans, etc.)
Food Collection – Helping Our Neighbors
Sherrie delivered 53 pounds of canned
goods to the Family Promise “pantry” in June. On
the day of our planned delivery, PERC had
changed their drop-off times, and the Shine
pantry at the Dream Center was also closed. But,
our friends at Family Promise also keep a small
collection of canned goods to supplement the
families in their program as they move into
housing. And it looks like we have a good start
on a collection for our July delivery! Thank you
to everyone who has contributed – keep up the
good work!
Family Promise
The shared host week with Bethesda was
filled with the laughter of lots of little children,
some fun activities for the kids and moms, and
some very meaningful fellowship with Bethesda
members and the Family Promise families.
Thank you to everyone who went out of
their way to provide food items, meals and

Fireworks Safety Month
Fireworks Injuries
Fireworks. They are synonymous with
our celebration of Independence Day. Yet, the
thrill of fireworks can often bring pain, and even
death. In 2013, CPSC conducted a survey of
fireworks injuries from June 21 to July 21. This
is what they learned:



240 people on average go to the emergency room
every day with fireworks-related injuries in the
month around the July 4th holiday.
65% of all fireworks injuries in 2013 occurred during
the month surrounding July 4th.
ILLEGAL and HOMEMADE FIREWORKS
WERE
INVOLVED IN ALL 8 FIREWORKS RELATED deaths IN
2013.


Injuries By Age
14% 0-4 years old
13% 5-9 years old
13% 10-14 years old
11% 15-19 years old
8% 20-24 years old
33% 25-44 years old

Safety Tips From the National
Council on Fireworks Safety











Parents and caretakers should always closely
supervise teens if they are using fireworks.
Parents should not allow young children to
handle or use fireworks.
Always have water ready if you are using
fireworks.
Know your fireworks; Read the caution label
before igniting.
Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where
you live, do not use them
Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your
alcohol for after the show.
Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.
Only light one firework at a time.
Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes
and then soak it in a bucket of water.
Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal
explosives: They can kill you!
Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter
sticks, to the fire or police department
Here are 7 phrases leaders should
memorize and use often:
I believe in you.
You are an asset to this team.
Let me know how I can help you.
You are doing a great job.
I need your help.
I want to help you reach your personal
goals.
You are making a difference here!
 Lastly, soak spent fireworks with water before
placing them in an outdoor, fire resistant
garbage can away from buildings and flammable
material.
The YAH Group
~ Watch for information
on the next group meeting….this group always
knows how to have fun. Julia will be distributing
information on where it will take place this
month, so watch for this, or ask her the plans so
you can be a part of it!
On Sunday, June 12th, our Worship Service
will be led by Cantabile, which is the Youth
Ensemble from Arborlawn United Methodist
Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. Karen Gossett is one
of the leaders of this very talented group of
singers. Please mark your calendars and be sure
to be in Worship on that day.

I would like to thank everyone
that prayed, sent a card or brought a meal by the
house while I was battling shingles. I'm still
unconformable but getting better every day. This
church means the world to Don and me ~ we
treasure one and all. Gratefully, Sherrie Tootill
Vacation
Bible School 2015
VBS was a great success with fourteen
children in attendance!
The children learned
about how God created the earth in six days,
Adam and Eve, the birth of Jesus, Jesus and the
Samaritan Woman and the New Jerusalem. Each
day was filled with Bible stories, crafts and science
experiments. The biggest and most looked forward
to part were the snack creations of Joey Ford, Vicki
Ford and McCall Hemingway.
Thanks to Jennifer McCalla for crafts, Brad
Rochester for science and Cyndi Everett and Shane
Metcalf for assisting in this special week of learning
about God. Adults and children alike had a
wonderful time, look for pictures in the coming
weeks on the bulletin boards in the hall.
Message from Your Moderator
I am so excited that Terri Price has been called and accepted to be the pastor at
Providence. Terri’s Ordination will be Sept. 20th and I am sure you will be hearing more about
that. Until she is ordained, I will continue to serve as Moderator of the Session and Terri will
“shadow” the meetings.
Providence has always held a special place in my heart and is indeed my home church in
many ways. I think the path forward with Terri’s leadership, the dedicated staff we already
have, help and guidance from Fourth Presbyterian and the wonderful leaders we have on
Session right now are a sure sign of God’s presence and work in the body of Christ at
Providence Church.
Blessings, Julie
Note Concerning Pastor on Call During Providence’s Transition:
The Rev. Julie Schaaf has agreed to be the Pastor on Call for emergencies or conditions that
require a minister to be with one of our families while we are in transition. She can be reached at
on her cell (864-421-4750). Prayer requests go to the church office, and since Becky Kay is a
part-time employee, please copy her at her e-mail at home, which is [email protected].
If you have a concern that does not need a minister, you may call Becky Kay at 864-616-9413 or
Julia Palmer at 864-630-5030. We will get in touch with the proper person to be of assistance, to
help or to pray.
Please like us on facebook and watch for a newly designed website. We are excited over the fresh
beginnings of both of these two very important “growths” for our church to gain publicity. All
articles, information, etc. are welcome. Watch for our “little notices”…..Please send them to Becky in
the Church Office.
