WELCOME TO AMISH COUNTRY
We’re glad you picked up our Activity Guide detailing all the festivals, fairs and fun to be had here in the Arthur area over the next 12
months. If you’ve visited us before or do so on a frequent basis, welcome back friend. If this is your first time in town, “You’re A Stranger
Only Once” – a motto we all like to live by.
The first thing to remember is when coming to the area you’ll probably be driving so you want to watch out for the vehicular (and pedestrian) traffic – we have a wide variety! Besides cars, there will be semis,
horse and buggies, motorcycles, scooters, tractors, and farm equipment.
The area is a popular destination for bicyclists too because of the flat,
open prairie spaces. Be careful out on our highways and the country
roads surrounding the Arthur area. We want you coming back often!
You are most welcome to explore the countryside and visit the various businesses which will often be connected to private residences. The
businesses will be clearly marked. The Amish welcome you to come
into their shops however, just like we non-Amish, they prefer only invited guests to their actual residences.
What is the best way to learn about the Amish? Visit us, of course!
Watch, observe and interact with the people, Amish and non-Amish
alike. We are not re-enactors, there is no entry fee, we want you to
come see, ask questions, shop, eat and enjoy a fun time with your family. We want you to experience downtown Arthur, the Route 133 corridor and the surrounding countryside in a real time, real life way that
you simply won’t find anywhere else.
Picking up this Activity Guide was just the first step in that adventure. You may also visit us on www.arthurfestivals.com, call 800-7226474 for more information or like/share our Arthur Welcome Center
Facebook page. Enjoy!

Destination Arthur
By ROGER W. BONHAM
Staff Writer
Welcome to Arthur and Amish Country, Illinois’ growing vacation area.
Nestled in the heart of the state’s largest Old Order Amish Settlement, Arthur, population 2,208, offers something to do year around.
Its unique stores, farmer’s market, county fair, festivals, theme parks, and auctions
make Arthur and Amish Country the perfect destination for vacations or for those shorter
weekend or one-day getaways.
Located nine miles west of Interstate 57, Arthur is minutes away from the humdrum
of everyday life, yet isolated enough to provide peaceful respite.
Guests can make reservations with the local motel, Arthur Country Inn, by calling
(217) 543-3321; the local bed and breakfast, Marsha’s Vineyard at (217) 543-4001; or
the Visitor Information Center, 1-800-722-6474 (1-800-72AMISH), to book a campsite.
If you want help in planning your visit to Amish Country, Arthur has two businesses
that offer tours to Amish homes, farms, and woodworking shops. The tours can be customized for large or small groups, families, and individuals. If you want to arrange tours,
contact Stella Eads at Amish Adventures and Stellar
Tours, 1-866-543-2734, or George and Adam Fritz at
ACM Tours, 1-888-321-9663.
Shopping is a year-around activity in Arthur. People from all 50 states and many foreign countries visit
Arthur to buy unique handcrafted wood furniture;
fresh home baked breads and pastries, jams, and candies; and handmade quilts and needlework from
Amish specialty stores scattered throughout the country and also available in some of the downtown stores.
Arthur’s downtown continues to thrive with craft
shops, clothing stores, book and music store, flower
and gift shop, grocery store, weekly newspaper and
print shop, furniture stores, pharmacy with soda fountain, three eating and drinking establishments, sewing
and craft store, antique stores, three banks, exercise
shop, cheese and sandwich shop, computer store, a resale shop, a gun and outdoor recreation store, and an expanded hardware and building materials store.
Other unique shopping experiences await visitors at stores located on Route 133. Establishments include a coffee and ice cream shop, barbecue restaurant, a sandwich shop,
Mexican restaurant, and a family restaurant and conference center.
Other businesses along the state route are convenience store and gas station, motel,
senior living center, an automobile dealership, a general merchandise store, resale clothing store, and a surplus hunting supply and clothing store.
If you prefer to coordinate your visit with special activities in Arthur, you certainly
have a huge variety to choose from. It seems like there is something going on in Arthur
every weekend.

Continuing every month this year is the Third Saturday Market located in the
“Annex Building” downtown. This market features everything from craft and flea market
items to locally grown produce in the parking lot during the summer months. The market
occurs on the third Saturday of each month.
The 25th Annual Arthur Quilt Show fills the Otto Center on April 24-26. The exhibition features over 100 quilts made by some of the best quilters from the Arthur area
and throughout central Illinois. Several quilts will be sold at an auction on Saturday.
The Kelly Miller Circus returns to Arthur for performances on April 26 at the high
school located along Route 133.
Rockome Gardens, located about
seven miles from Arthur, or just two miles
south of Chesterville off Route 133, opens
on May 2. Rockome Foods and Cheese
Factory, located on park grounds, is open
year around. The park features special
theme weekends throughout the season.
See the calendar of events in this issue for
specific events and dates. The park is open
daily through October 26.
Touch-A-Truck, a new event sponsored by Arthur Community Park District, will be
held Saturday, May 17, at Eberhardt Park. The event allows families to view, and touch,
large vehicles such as trucks, tractors, end loaders, emergency vehicles, and maintenance
vehicles that are used in the community for construction, delivery, and maintenance purposes. Personnel will be on hand to explain how each vehicle is used. Photos are encouraged. Concessions will be available. Call ahead for times.
Arthur’s first festival of the year is set for June 6 and 7. Strawberry Jam features a
street fair with craft and food vendors, a children’s area with inflatable games and rides,
and sidewalk sales. Visitors can participate in several activities, including a strawberry
pie eating contest. A new event joining the festival lineup is Ty's Dash & Splash Memorial 5K & 10K Run. The event was organized in memory of Ty Brewer and to raise funds
for improving and maintaining the community swimming pool. The day ends with a
Strawberry Pork Chop Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. at Arthur United Methodist Church.
A Strawberry Social will be held on June 7 at the Otto Center in conjunction with
Strawberry Jam.
The Great Pumpkin Patch, located two miles south and one-fourth mile west of
Arthur, will host its annual Great Gourd Gathering on Saturday, June 7. The gathering
features gourd producers and enthusiasts from all over with vendors selling craft items
made from gourds. Informational seminars on various types of gourds and tips for growing them will be offered. The Great Pumpkin Patch is located on the Bruce Condill
Farm.
June 7 also marks Open House for The Homestead Bakery located at The Great
Pumpkin Patch. The bakery is operated year around by the Condills and offers a full line
of delicious baked goods, including some made with pumpkin.

Cushman Scooter enthusiasts will hold their annual Cushman Scooters Daze on
June 7 at the fairgrounds.
Arthur has become the place to celebrate the nation’s birthday. Arthur’s Freedom
Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, June
28, includes an afternoon parade downtown
and the giant fireworks and air show sponsored by Arthur Rotary Club at night. The
fireworks and air show take place at Jurgens
Park (fairgrounds). Come early to enjoy the
parade downtown, go to the park for a picnic or enjoy food from many vendors, and
enjoy vintage aircraft flights, helicopter
rides, and music leading up to the 28minute fireworks display.
The Moultrie-Douglas County Fair takes
over Jurgens Park on July 6-12. This will be
the 84th edition of the fair. It is what county fairs are supposed to be: livestock exhibits;
tractor pulls; demolition derbies; carnival rides; vendors selling taffy, ice slushies, sandwiches, and games of chance; queen pageants; musical entertainment; and great
evenings out with the family.
The Second Annual Touch of Arthur will be held Saturday, August 2, in downtown
Arthur. The event showcases products manufactured and sold locally in the many shops
and stores located around and in Arthur.
Arthur Mennonite Relief Sale returns to the Otto Center on Friday and Saturday, August 22 and 23. The sale features locally made wood furniture and quilt items. It raises
money for families with need in the area and in Third World countries. Other benefit
auctions are held throughout the year and benefit the Beacon in Sullivan, Shriner’s Hospital, and relief efforts in Haiti. But the Mennonite Relief Sale is the “Granddaddy” of
them all. See the schedule of events for dates of other benefit auctions.
The 42nd Annual Arthur Amish Country Cheese Festival will be held Saturday
through Monday, August 30 through September 1, in downtown Arthur. Events include a
cheese eating contest; cheese curling contest;
5K, 10K, and one-mile runs and walks; craft
and food vendors; sidewalk sales; live music;
and children’s inflatable games and rides. The
Cheese Festival is three days of food, entertainment, and fun for the entire family, and it’s all
located in downtown Arthur.
The Great Pumpkin Patch opens its season
on September 15 and remains open daily
through October 31. The patch, which is celebrating its 25th season, has been featured
on national TV, helped decorate the White House lawn for Halloween, and has been the
14

subject of various magazine articles.
In addition to growing and selling pumpkins, The Great Pumpkin Patch is a great
place for “children” of all ages to visit. There are lots of exhibits, both fun and educational, to see. It’s a favorite field trip destination for schools throughout east central Illinois.
Arthur streets and country roads will be filled with bicyclists touring the area on
Saturday, September 13. That’s when the annual Bob Galloway Memorial Amish Country Bike Tour takes place. Bicyclists from all over will travel marked routes through the
countryside and return to Arthur for a day of visiting and shopping.
Some of the best tasting barbecue comes to Arthur on October 10 and 11 for the annual Central Illinois Braggin’ Rights Barbecue Cook-Off. A Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned competition, the event annually attracts around 50 of the nation’s best
barbecue cooks. A competition for local “Backyard BBQers” is offered. Trophies are
awarded. Vendors set up to sell barbecue sandwiches and merchandise such as grills and
accessories.
Over 300 pumpkins will be carved and
lit for Arthur’s Pumpkin House. The display
will be available downtown for viewing October 25-31.
Homesteaders on the Prairie and Spirit
of the Seasons/Gathering on the Prairie antique and craft shows return on November 7
and 8 to the fairgrounds and Otto Center respectively.
Amish Country’s Christmas Kickoff
will be November 22. Events include special
sales at participating downtown businesses
throughout the day and a lighted Christmas
parade in the evening. The event ends with
Santa Claus arriving in town during the parade and everyone congregating in Knights
Court where Santa will be available to listen to children’s Christmas wishes.
The Fourth Annual Central Illinois Outdoor Expo on February 13 and 14 leads off
events in 2015. The expo fills the Otto Center with all kinds of equipment for outdoorsmen. Seminars on hunting, fishing, and conservation are planned.
Homesteaders on the Prairie Antique Show and Gathering on the Prairie Antique
Show return to the fairgrounds and Otto Center respectively on 6 and 7.
The Sixth Annual Woodwrights Guild Home and Garden Show takes over the Otto
Center for two days on March 13-14.
Regardless of the time of year, Arthur Amish Country has much to offer in shopping, sites to see, entertainment, and places to eat. The friendly people who live in the
area and work at the many businesses go out of their way to live up to the community’s
motto: “You’re only a stranger once.”

ARTHUR’S “Magnificant Mile”..or so
Just one half mile south of downtown Arthur and Route 133 is one of the
largest exposition halls in the area, the Otto Center. Located on County Line
Road (E.L. Jurgens Highway), in the middle of one of the most unique mile of
shops and farms you’ll find anywhere in America, the Otto Center has had an interesting transformation from its beginnings in 1965.
In the mid 1960’s, the Arthur Community Unit School District #305 opened
the Otto School south of town and the North Attendance Centers to accommodate the elementary school population of the Amish community who attended
public schools. The school provided teaching staff and curriculum that met state
standards without the use of the audio/visual equipment in the public grade
school in town. It was in the late 1980’s the State of Illinois stepped in to inform
the District that this was unacceptable and that, despite the vociferous protestations of the Amish and non-Amish communities, the Otto School and North Centers would have to be closed.
Some Amish parents opted to send their children to Arthur Elementary
School in town while the rest chose to educate their children in parochial schools
around the Arthur area. The Otto Center, to which a large gym was built, was
often used as a site for social events and sales within the Amish community.
A group of local Amish and Mennonites decided to purchase the Otto School
from the school district to keep the old school rooms and gym for centralized,
local gatherings, such as charity events and fundraisers, for not just the Amish
but the non-Amish community too. It proved to be a popular meeting spot!
In 2000, the Otto Center expanded with the purchase of additional property.
The old gym was replaced with today’s structure. The facility has three kitchens,
and multiple sections in which to host events of all kinds. The facility can comfortably host as many as 1,200 for a meal and well over 2,000 at a time for an
event.
The facility, near downtown Arthur, has become a very popular spot for
events from fundraisers for local families to expositions and expositions sponsored by the Woodwrights Guild, the Arthur Area Association of Commerce and
the Arthur Area Economic Development Council as well as many others.
The Otto Center, like the school before, has become a meeting place for two different cultures to gather, celebrate, and assist those in need through various
fundraisers. Remember once you turn off or cross Route 133 on your way to the
Otto Center you will enter a mile long strip of shops that stand for family craftsmanship, quality, handmade items, , homemade items and great customer service that make all of the Heart of Illinois Amish Country one of a kind. Be sure to
visit these stores along one magnificent mile:
MELROSE QUILTS AND SEWFORTH – Perhaps the prettiest stop along the
way, at Melrose you will find a large choice of quilts in different colors, sizes and
styles. Hand stitched by Amish and Mennonite ladies, the quilts are of the highest quality as are the wall hangings, placemats, table runners and more.

“Lazy Dazy Days of Summer
Hitch up the boat, grab the fishing poles, put on the swimsuit, grab the sunscreen – it is SUMMER! Those lazy, hazy days of picnics in our parks, camping at one of the many nearby lakes or
just pitching a tent in the backyard. It is corn on the cob, food cooking on the grill, sun tea, snow
cones at the ball diamond and, of course, it’s salad season – macaroni, potato, lettuce, ham, apple
and cucumber/onion to name just a few. Oh, yes, you can get all of that right here and made fresh.
It is red, white and blue sitting under a night sky watching the huge fireworks extravaganza.
It is the fire trucks, the veterans, the horses, the floats and the music of a parade. It is watching
thousands of lightning bugs dance over lush green fields of corn and beans where just a few
months before there was “nothing” and now the crops that feed the world are there being tended to
by the hard work of the farm family.
It is a warm night at the fair with all the cotton candy, tractor pulling, carnival riding, livestock showing, pie cooking, game playing, demo derby, mud racing goodness! It is walking out of
the fairgrounds with a child clutching a goldfish, one asleep on the shoulder and some salt water
taffy as a treat for later (or to eat in the car on the way home!)
The days are longer and the bedtimes are later just so you can take it all in. We will give you
plenty of things to do if you join us under the hot summer sun and well into the night. It is an exciting time to enjoy all the things that make life great here in east central Illinois. Lots of activities
on our calendar or you can just sit back and relax (you really can hear the corn grow!).
The biggest decision you have to make as these carefree days of no school and vacation will
be to decide if the Arthur Amish Country Cheese Festival is a celebration of the end of summer or
a celebration of the start of autumn. We vote both! We’d love to have you join us throughout the
summer in The Heart of Illinois Amish Country.

WHILE IN AMISH COUNTRY - VISIT CHESTERVILLE
If you are coming into the “Heart of Illinois Amish Country” and the
Village of Arthur from Interstate 57 you will pass through the community
of Chesterville on Illinois Route 133. Coming from Arthur on Route 133
headed to Rockome Gardens, the town of Chesterville is where you
would make your right turn to go to the park located just 1 and 1/2 miles
away.
One of the older settlements in the area, Chesterville was founded in
1832 when the first pioneers moved into the wild, unsettled land along the
Kaskaskia River. It was a hunter’s paradise. Deer were abundant sometimes found in droves of more than one hundred. Settlers could often
bag their dinner from their doorstep. They varied their meals with wild
hogs, partridges, and prairie chickens—a species now extinct-- geese,
ducks, and an abundance of edible fish from the river.
The Douglas County pioneers chose this river location because it bordered prairie land. They needed the forest that grew on each side of the
river to build their houses and barns. But they especially liked the treeless prairie land that stretched for miles like a sea of grass with islands of
small groves of trees. Unlike their eastern friends, who were compelled to
carve their farms out of the forests, the Douglas County pioneers could
establish farms by plowing under the grass and flowers.
It wasn’t easy. They had to solve new problems. The wetlands harbored disease. Many died from malaria carried by swarms of mosquitoes.
Others died from ague and other illnesses. The heavily matted sod—the
roots of densely growing prairie plants had to be turned over. Eventually
the pioneers learned how to “break” the prairie. They also developed
ways to drain the wetlands. By 1878 after settlers had tamed the prairie
and solved the drainage problem, they discovered that they had settled on
some of the world’s best farm land.
Today this historic, quaint community, one of several small communities dotting the area landscape and still in the midst of the world’s best
farmland, has several attractions of its own to visit.
You might want to stop in at the Chesterville Antique Mall and check
out the selection of furniture, appliances and various collectibles. Paul
and Judy Schrock as well as the staff are happy to show you around and
help you select just the right piece for your home or as a gift for that special someone.

WHERE LEGENDARY CRAFTSMANSHIP
MEETS UNIQUE DESIGN
You might be in Cape Cod marveling at the entryway to a beach
front cottage or perhaps you are in a Chicago high-rise and notice a
spectacular armoire. You could be in a Miami mansion with exquisite floors or an L.A. home with a dramatic stairway. Perhaps a
lodge in the mountains of Colorado in front of a roaring fire encased
by a spectacular mantle or you might just be at your neighbor’s for
dinner when you notice the finely crafted tables, chairs and kitchen
cabinets. In any of these places these fine pieces might very well
have come from right here in the Arthur area from the Woodwrights
Guild.
Formed in 2009, the Guild today consists of 11 members with a
dedication to their craft. The Guild, a group of wood craftsmen in
the area, was formed to share ideas, designs, and resources which
would allow them to create quality products of the highest standard.
Guild members are interested in keeping the woodworking community alive with a return to superior hand crafted products of enduring
value. At the same time innovation and unique design ideas are encouraged to allow the custom-made final product that fits the customer’s specifications.
The Guild hosts the annual Home and Garden Show at the Otto
Center which will run from Friday, March 13 to Saturday, March 14,
2015. It is a wonderful opportunity to see these fine craftsmen and
their products all in one place. On Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8, 2014 the Woodwrights Guild will have their annual
Fall Open House at each member’s workshops. During both events,
there is plenty to see and do while discovering that fine craftsmanship still exists!
We encourage you to stop at the Arthur Welcome Center before
you begin your journey visiting the Arthur Area. You can obtain information and maps for the Guild businesses and much more. Then
take a stroll through the downtown businesses before you get into
your car or on your bike to explore the fascinating area around the
town. See why we are Illinois’ Longest Main Street and how the fine
craftsmanship of the members of The Woodwrights Guild is something in which we are justifiably proud.

A Little about the Amish...
Kent Stock - Staff Writer
“Come from among them and be ye separate” is a verse from 2 Corinthians. It is this
verse and others that form the basis for the Ordnung (German for order) which is the unwritten code by which the Amish live. Motor vehicle ownership is not allowed because it
puts the owner “too much in the world.” It is just one of the Amish beliefs to maintain a
simple life based on family, community and belief in God. Transportation is used that is
sufficient to keep one involved in the local community but not for travel far and wide. This
keeps the community tight-knit and
responsible for each other’s welfare.
The dress of both the women and
men is based on the same principle –
keep it simple, plain and useful. You
will see some variation of dress and
appearance, especially between the
younger and older Amish but it remains pretty much a standard especially as one gets older.
I’ve seen Amish people at the
mall and the beach though? The
Amish will often hire drivers to take them to different places to visit friends, family, and
yes vacation. One of the first things you learn living in the midst of an Amish settlement
is that their practices may be different than the modernity of our non-Amish world but the
people are basically the same. The Amish emphasize this fact quite a bit in fact.
For health reasons, employment reasons, personal reasons it is not out of the ordinary
for the Amish to travel with someone else pretty much anywhere in the world. It is their
day to day existence as members of their local communities where their lives are more
structured around their beliefs.
So I’m here, where are the Amish? Can I visit this village? Well, the Amish are all
around us. They reside in the country on farms where often a family business will be located as well. You’ll see our Amish friends and neighbors on the street, shopping in the
stores, eating at our restaurants, and just chatting on the street. You are coming into a community of beliefs rather than a physical location such as our Village of Arthur.
You are most welcome to explore the countryside and visit the various businesses
which will often be connected to residences. The businesses will be clearly marked from

a private residence. The Amish welcome you to come into their shops however, just like
we non-Amish, they prefer only invited guests to their actual residences.
I’d like to see an Amish church, where can I find one. Well, you are out of luck on
that one as there are not any. The Amish have church at their homes or maybe even an outbuilding on the farm. The pews, the hymnals, and everything needed for Sunday services
travels to the family’s home from week to week. If you see the long green wagon at a farm
house, you’ll know where church is going to be held.
I’d love to take a picture but I hear that is frowned
upon? The Amish do not believe in posing for pictures and
do not wish to be photographed in close up photographs.
Can you imagine being at the grocery store and having
someone with a camera come up and start snapping pictures of your family? However, pictures from a distance
are fine just put the telephoto lens away. You can take pictures from behind as well from a discrete distance but it is
preferred faces not be shown.
The Amish here seem different from those in other
places, is that correct? The Arthur Amish settlement is the
oldest and largest settlement in Illinois. It is the seventh
largest in the nation and has a more rural look to it than
some of the larger Amish communities to the east in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The
rules that govern the local communities are unique to that area which is why there are differences from place to place.
What is the difference between the Amish and Mennonites? This explanation also differs not only from place to place but right here in our own area. An extremely simplified
explanation is you have the Old Order Amish, different variations on conservative Mennonite branches and then the Mennonite Church itself whose members are indistinguishable
from someone of the Methodist or Baptist faiths. The beliefs, dress and rules basically
comes down to the church in which one chooses to worship.

THE GREAT PUMPKIN PATCH
....25 YEARS OF FAMILY FUN!!
Twenty five years ago it was just a place some local folks stopped to
get pumpkins from some kids in the area. Over the years, those kids grew
up and as they grew the pumpkins and the patch grew with them. From
those few seeds and first cucurbits sold to today The Great Pumpkin
Patch has grown into an autumn destination for nearly 60,000 people.
Some initial visitors who brought their kids are now bringing back
their grandkids and maybe even the great grandkids! Every year, TGPP
adds something new, changes their displays and adds new events to keep
the most sincere patch anywhere just that – a true family fall experience.
Of course you can pick your perfect pumpkin (gourd and/or squash
too) for cooking or for decoration. Wagon rides take place on weekends
(and Columbus Day), there is musical entertainment on the weekends,
Wanda’s Haunted Crib (for a fun/funny scare), the TGPP museum, and
The Bridle Gift Shop. You will be aMAZEd at the variety of mazes made
of sunflowers, straw bales, broomcorn and miscanthus. The Great Maize
Maze is the greatest of all with a viewing platform (once you find it) that
looks out over the 200 Acres Farm.
The eye –catching displays have been a feature of
TGPP for many years (a great
photo opportunity year after
year). The League of Cucurbit Nations features a display
of the produce from across
the world, Wall O’Squash,
Noah’s Ark, Pumpkin Trees,
Rainbow O’ Squash, what is
perhaps the world’s largest Corn Shock Tower and the A to Z of Squash
display (really, every letter represented!)
There are farm animals of course all about to greet you. The Center
School, a historical recreation work in progress, is open to give you an appreciation of the rural roots of the area. Take a stroll in the Children’s
Garden and the Conifer Garden to enjoy the beauty of some of our natural
Prairie and native plants. Plus, mum quilts! TGPP grows over 5,000
71
THE GREAT PUMPKIN PATCH
cont’d
mums each year and the displays are just as awesome as the pumpkins
(you can take them home too!).
All these activities and things to see are bound to make you hungry
and thirsty – TGPP has that covered too. Craving some pumpkin ice
cream, an apple cider slushie, a pumpkin cookie or just a cheeseburger or
corn on the cob? The Patch provides all this and much more on the
grounds with The Two Mile Sweet Shop, The Pumpkin Eatery, The Pumpkin Creamery and Chef Tippy’s from nearby Sullivan, IL are who are
there on weekends to provide some truly unique and incredibly delicious
dishes several made right from the produce at TGPP! If you love those,
and you will, weekend events feature special cucurbit creative cooking
classes and tastings.
TGPP is a great place for a school field trip in the fall, a birthday
party or for “bigger kids” there is the Two Mile Schoolhouse to rent out
for meetings and or gatherings of most any kinds. There is always something to celebrate at TGPP and not just in the fall but year round.
The Homestead Bakery, located just across the parking lot from the
entrance to TGPP, will have their grand opening on Saturday, June 7. This
delicious, nationally known bakery provides delicious baked goods almost
year round. Also on that
Saturday, Illinois State
Gourd Society is welcomed
to The Patch with displays,
classes, and seminars all on
the many uses of gourds.
Colorful and informative!
The event, held in conjunction with the Strawberry Jam
in downtown Arthur, gives
you a late spring/early summer glimpse of what TGPP is like “off season”!
On June 12 and again on September 21, TGPP will host two events as
part of the “Farm to Fork” series that just started in 2013. Dining in the
early summer, mid-fall sunshine on food locally grown, decorations locally made with great company to dine and serve – an experience that
can’t be beat and you do not want to miss. The Patch will even extend
72
THE GREAT PUMPKIN PATCH
cont’d
their fall season by one day to host a special Antique Farm Machinery
Plowing Day on November 1 in keeping with the historical nature of the
farm.
The Great Pumpkin Patch is also environmentally friendly in many
ways; whether it is rainwater, unused pumpkins/gourds squash The Patch
reuses, recycles and restores. One way they do this is through Homestead
Seeds, a business dedicated to garnering the finest seeds of the exceptional crops locally grown and ensuring one of the natural steps of a selfsustaining cycle. That, of course, is a Condill family tradition.
For the last twenty-five years a few seeds grown by three boys as
grown into a great fall experience (and beyond) for thousands. Through
the years it has meant lots of hard work, overcoming adversity, and even
more creativity – a true family experience, not just for the owners but for
all in the community who are involved in making TGPP the most “sincere” anywhere!

ARTHUR,
A RT H U R , ILLINOIS
I L LI N O IS
Another trip around the sun is almost complete. We’ve planted, we’ve sowed and
now it is time to reap the harvest. The pastels of spring became the rich, dark colors of
summer which are now turning into the browns, orange and reds of autumn – falling
leaves and falling calendar pages.
They say here in this area there are four seasons; winter, spring, summer and
PUMPKIN! Illinois is the largest producer of pumpkins in the world and we do our
part here to keep us on top! We are famous for our cucurbits from the orange orbs, to
gourds to squash for cooking, eating, decorating and even for “chucking”!
The air is turning back to crisp and we invite you to come spend an afternoon enjoying pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin cookies and an apple cider slushy. Grab some
mums of purple, red, yellow, pink for that harvest display. Get some of that last produce from the garden to can and preserve for the winter months. Is there anything
better than opening up a little bit of summer/fall in the middle of winter?
Autumn is our time to be thankful for the bounty we enjoy in this area – not just
in food, resources but for people - people that live and work here but also our visitors
with whom we happily share this good life here in east central Illinois with every year.
From the Cheese Festival through all our Fall events and to the Christmas Kick off –
we invite you to come and enjoy The Heart of Illinois Amish Country – for harvest season, for a winter of rest, for the rebirth of spring, and the glory of summer – You Are a
Stranger Only Once!

Sincerity As Far As The Eye Can See
In 1859, McDonald immigrants from Scotland settled in East Central
Illinois and purchased ground to begin their new lives. Today, over 150
years later, the evolution and stewardship of that same land continues.
From the heritage of growing numerous grains, row crops and livestock, a
new enterprise grew. In 1977, Bruce and Mary Beth (McDonald) Condill
added a few pumpkin seeds to their children’s garden, and over the next
few decades a cucurbit business grew to 63 acres of pumpkins, squash
and gourds, involvement in
commercial pumpkin production and the preservation of
heirloom and rare cucurbit
seeds.
Bruce and Mary Beth’s
three sons, Kit, Mac and
Buck have participated in
every part of this adventure.
Their creative ideas and passionate interest in education, plants and cucurbits have helped the farm
evolve into an agritourism destination, a botanical showcase and an educational center for anyone interested in cucurbits. The sons’ wives, Emily,
Ginny and Shana have contributed ideas, and continue to work in any and
all phases of the operation. Even the grandchildren are beginning to find
ways to participate. The Great Pumpkin Patch is definitely a family business and a work of love.
The Great Pumpkin Patch is open to the public from September 15
through October 31. Preparations are made year-round to make the farm
experience one in which the guests can reconnect with the land and celebrate the beauty of harvest. It is hoped that through the passion of our
family, guests can be inspired to learn new things and become better stewards of all things around us.
Pick your own produce or select from our tables. We grow over 300
varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds for your cooking and baking
pleasure, as well as for your indoor and outdoor decorating delight. We
also offer Indian corn, garden mums, corn stalks and straw bales (large
and small).
Come help us kick off our 25th season!

A ‘Taste’ of Amish Country...
One of the favorite activities our visitors participate in year round when they
come to visit the Heart of Illinois Amish Country – eating! You can’t come
spend any time in the Arthur area without partaking in the wide variety of food
choices you will find on your visit and most of the time what you’ll find may
very well be locally grown and homemade.
It might be our local grown produce from the Arthur Produce Auction, one
of the many area greenhouses or the Farmers Market at the Welcome Center held
each week from approximately mid-May to mid-October. We have everything
from cheese to honey to cider to jams/jellies, candies and much more. Do you
need gluten free or have other special diet concerns, you can certainly find that
in our area. Or perhaps you’d enjoy a meal in an Amish home, stop by an area
bakery for some of the delicious baked goods or have breakfast, brunch, lunch or
dinner at our many area restaurants.
No matter what your appetite or craving you will have no trouble satisfying it
on your stay in the Arthur area. We’ve asked some of our best local cooks, businesses and restaurants to share some popular recipes with you so get out those
recipe books! You can go shopping at one of our locally owned bulk food or discount stores for the ingredients and you can make an Illinois Amish Country
meal right in your own kitchen! HAPPY EATING!

Spring...You can smell it in the air!
It might first come from the smell of the rich, black soil as it shakes
off the freeze from the winter with all the rich nutrients waking up from
within. It might be the songbirds singing, the trees stretching out with
their green buds, people resuming work in their yards and in the fields.
Suddenly you look around and realize, Spring is here!
The bare landscape of brown, black and gray comes to life with an accent on the color GREEN! The area greenhouses open their doors with a
rainbow of flowers, plants and seeds to sow for that summer garden. It is
a time of planting, creating and getting back outdoors to fix up the lawn,
and enjoy the spring plants – jonquils, lilac, japonica, peonies and tulips.
The fields and barnyards are filled with lambs, calves, foals and kids
(of both the goat and human variety!) stretching out their legs, running
about in the fresh
spring breeze. Excitement is in the air
that only increases as
the mercury goes up
in the thermometer.
It is a season of birth
and rebirth, sunrise
services at the local
church, egg hunts,
quilt shows and many
other celebrations.
The first produce starts coming in for our market days downtown and to
the auction house for sale. Strawberries, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers,
onions and potatoes – anything that can be planted in our rich, black soil
is ready for that first taste of spring sunshine.
Come visit us and watch the earth literally come back to life after a
winter’s rest. It is a sight to behold, a pleasure for the palette, a song for
the ears and a great chance to make that connection back with the great
outdoors and all it has to offer.
Festival season kicks into high gear too and we have much to celebrate
here in The Heart of Illinois Amish Country – we love to share it all with
you!
