President’s Message
If I can best describe the past eight months of living the dream as PPANE President, it can be summed up quite nicely in the
words of Hunter S. Thompson… “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty
and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly
proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” Indeed, what an amazing ride it’s been to date! My journey to all six New England state
conventions is complete and I enjoyed visiting with existing friends and making new ones. Thank you all for treating Linda and
me like royalty. I have many great memories but my fondest was the opportunity to witness the various tributes to your
members. In Massachusetts, James (JB) Boykin was awarded Life Membership and Joyce Holt the prestigious National
Award; in Maine, Tom Jones was bestowed the Distinguished Colleague Award, in Connecticut we were moved by the tribute
in loving memory of Anne Brignolo, in Vermont, Michael Maynard
was presented with the President’s Award and in New Hampshire
honored Nylora Bruleigh with the prestigious National Award.
I probably should have considered the amount of time six state
conventions would require me to be away from my home and studio
before encouraging my board to host Northeast District competition
but I know now it was a great decision with a very successful
outcome. Imagine the excitement and energy of two judging rooms
operating simultaneously; observing and listening for two full days to
some of the best judges in the country evaluate, discuss and score images. Seeing your own images judged is exciting but nothing tops the
thrill of seeing one of Felice Boucher’s imagesscore a perfect 100,
a very rare occurrence; congratulations Felice. Image competition is
a great learning opportunity and I was pleased to see so many New
England members attend and take advantage of the live judging and
also the one-on-one mentor sessions with PPA Affiliate Jurors, Rene
Genest, Steve Bedell and yours truly. President Elect, Lorraine
Bedell did a topnotch job scheduling and organizing the mentor
sessions and I extend my thanks to all three of you. I also want to
recognize and extend a huge THANK-YOU to print committee
Co-Chairs, Mark Sweeney and Nancy Green for their commitment, dedication and countless hours of time they
committed to make District judging at PPANE the huge success it was. Months and months of planning, phone calls, spreadsheets, coordinating volunteers, coordinating judges, flights, etc. The list goes on and on and none of us knows the full extent
of time and energy each of them invested to personally support me and to convey the message that PPANE is alive and well
and going strong! You are both truly Exceptional!
As I begin my final leg of this amazing journey, PPANE’s educational opportunities are just beginning. The six state
Summer Sizzler tour begins on June 5th with Trish Logan; followed by Diane Miller – June 9th; Tom Hurlbut – June 10th;
Tim Barden – June 13th; Alison Miniter – June 16th and ending with Don Chick – June 23rd. Each program was intentionally scheduled on different days to allow you to take advantage of as many programs as possible. On June 30th, the jewel in
the crown is a full day photographic retreat at the historic Rolling Ridge Estate in North Andover (www.rollingridge.com).
This full day program with lunch included, features hands-on posing and lighting demonstrations throughout the grounds of the
property with five of New England’s exceptional photographers; Rene & Joan Genest, Mark & Susan O’Connell and
Stephen Sedman. On-line sign-up is now available at: http://members.ppane.com/Events. Last but not least, we have our 3 day
September conference featuring Clay Blackmore, Richard Sturdevant and Gary Hughes; along with our own local talents,
Madonna Lovett-Repeta and David Maheu. Lots of good stuff is coming your way this summer and fall and I invite you to
come along for the ride and enjoy some good times
with your photographer friends.
NEIPP 2014 Attendee Comments:

From Nancy Green...
Anyone who has EVER worked on Competition Committee knows
how overwhelming it can be.
It truly takes a team working well together to make it work. Mark
Sweeney and I can’t thank our team enough for their dedication to the
success of this past Northeast Competition. The memories of the
emotional moments (when Kelly got the last of her merits she needed for
her Masters degree) and the stressful moments (when we had to pack the cases properly and get them ready
for shipping), then right up to the end with the feeling of relief are memories we’ll cherish forever.
Thank you to YOU who entered and supported our District and PPANE. Without your participation there
would not have been a competition. Whether you were pleased or frustrated (Like me) by the results I am
certain you will continue to enter into IPC with the changes you need to make. This is a learning process and
full of excitement.
I hope I remembered everyone and if not please forgive me.
