ONE BIG, HAPPY CAMP FAMILY
When Beth’s family started coming to camp,
all 10 of them were a bit unsure what to expect.
One of the Meadows family’s sidekicks, Terri, has
watched the whole family go from shy and quiet
to extroverted individuals with their own niches at
camp, from arts and crafts to zip-lining, the ropes
course, archery and canoeing.
Beth has been a foster parent for 30 years, hosting
hundreds of children during that time. Two of her
adopted children, 10-year-old brothers Cameron
and Jacob, suffer from bilateral renal dysplasia.
That means their kidneys did not grow in utero, and
they began dialysis at birth. Their kidneys were
transplanted after their third birthdays.
“There are so many personalities and so much to
keep my attention,” Terri said. She loves working
with the family and respects the way Beth treats
them all equally with kindness and compassion.
As a single parent, Beth admits her first thought
about camp was to wonder how she possibly could
manage all of her children while they were here. It
didn’t take long for her to realize camp was a place
where worry could be left behind.
Beth says camp has transformed her children’s
confidence and given them new experiences and
friendships they carry home with them. Mostly,
though, she said they just have a blast while
they’re here.

“The minute we walked in — it was wonderful,” Beth
said. “(The) sidekicks were so good with the kids.”
At Flying Horse Farms, she says, she has an entire
army of helpers to put her trust in, including
staff, counselors and the onsite medical team.
With Cameron and Jacob’s illness, it’s especially
comforting for her to know that medical help is
always at the ready. And, as for herself, it’s nice to
get a small respite from her role as sole provider.
Terri agrees. “They love (camp),” she said. “They are
all able to be individuals while they are here. Their
voices can be heard.”
“It has been an honor,” she added, “to be part of
their family.”
