Comments from audience members:
“You have built something very special
at Galston! Tonight was awesome,
empowering and inspiring. These
triumphs emerge from a culture of
courage, risk taking and unity that the
principal builds (however shy to accept
praise!).
Thank you so much for inviting me
and making me feel part of your
school community. I look forward to
working with you in such a wonderful
environment of spirit and passion for the
job!”
Tim McCallum
Director, Public Schools NSW, Dural
Principal Network
“I would really like to congratulate you,
your staff and students on a fantastic
and enjoyable performance.”
Ann Mills
Relieving Principal Middle Dural PS
“Congratulations to all concerned. It
was a fantastic performance and I know
my students said "it was awesome!"
I thought it was phantasmagorical. Well
done.”
Caron Dodd
Principal Kenthurst Public School
“Thanks for the invitation to the musical.
My wife and I really enjoyed being back
at GHS and seeing such a great show.
Congratulations to everyone involved in
putting on such a wonderful musical.”
Geoff Wing
Principal Pennant Hills High School
“On Wednesday 24 July, students from
Years 3 - 6 attended Galston High School
to watch a production of ‘High School
Musical’.
The students thoroughly
enjoyed the performance and it was great
to see so many of our past students in
the musical. It certainly makes us proud
to witness our past students flourishing
at high school and getting involved in
so many extra-curricular activities. The
production was a credit to Galston High
School and all of the students and staff
involved. Congratulations Galston High
School.”
Galston Public School
It was our absolute delight to
attend a couple of the GHS musical
performances last weekend. We were
blown away by the commitment
and talent of the staff who somehow
managed to bring such a production
together.
“Thank you for your commitment to
providing our kids with an opportunity
that I’m sure they will never forget.
experiencing the highs and lows of
all the hours of rehearsals and then
enjoying the many smiling faces as
they performed, made me a very proud
parent.”
A Message from the Director....
For over two terms, Galston High
School students have refined their
singing, dancing and acting skills
for the performances of High School
Musical, which took place from July
22 – July 28. These students rehearsed
three times a week, before and after
school, and even gave up lunchtimes
for extra practice!
Since this was my first musical at
Galston, I was amazed at not only how
much talent there is in this school but
also at how positively the students all
work together! I’ve seen some of the
older students helping out younger
students, going through vocal parts,
reciting lines and repeating dance
moves to ensure that they all knew
it inside out! Students always knew
that there was something that needed
doing and were constantly asking
if they could help showing great
leadership within this exceptional
group.
It has been so rewarding to watch
students develop and grow through
this experience! So many of them
knew exactly how they wanted their
characters to be, making directing
easier than what I first imagined. What
was really great was having teachers
speak with me after the show saying
that some of the students have never
opened their mouths in class because
they are too shy but there they were
up on the stage dancing and singing
with a microphone in their hands.
I have been overwhelmed by the
support of the Galston community who
have all given such positive feedback.
The primary schools thoroughly
enjoyed it with some students turning
up again to the evening performances.
I would like to thank our friends who
assisted with the production wherever
possible. We were fortunate enough
to get many volunteers. Firstly, I’d
like to thank the band, backstage and
lighting for being involved, especially
Ms Vella and Mrs Enriquez for putting
in all that time and effort. I’d also like
to thank Mrs Pendlebury for creating
our beautiful cheerleader, jock and
brainiac costumes and for being at
every dress rehearsal to make sure
things ran smoothly! She has made
the majority of costumes for the past
five shows. Ms Duggan, thank you for
your amazing artistic design making
what I envisioned come alive! Thank
you to the art faculty, particularly Mrs
Coghlan, for all those hours painting
sets! Mr Draper and Ms Thornthwaite
have been immensely helpful with set
and prop design, making clear that
anything is possible with the stage.
Thank you for building the set and all
your advice. Thank you to Mrs Gray for
your work as Front of House Manager
and organising the ushers and Mrs
Clarkson for the hours of work involved
with selling the tickets.
Ms Bacash, thank you for all your moral
support and always assisting me with
anything the show needed! It was
great to have you join our team. Thank
you Mrs Fuller for building confidence
in our students and making them
sound fabulous every night! Every
rehearsal you conducted with such
energy and enthusiasm! Finally, I’d
like to thank Mrs Andrus for making
this happen. You always made sure
that everything was done on time and
around me so that I could just focus on
the creative aspects of the show.
High School Musical has been nothing
short of amazing and as Tim McCallum,
the Director of the Dural Principal
Network said, the show was “awesome,
empowering and inspiring”.
The Galston High School Music
Department would like to extend
a sincere thank you to the Galston
District Eisteddfod Committee for
their incredibly generous donation
of $10,000. The Galston District
Eisteddfod was a significant event in
the life of our local community giving
individuals and groups an opportunity
to perform in a safe and caring
environment for 20 years and we are
proud to be associated with such an
exciting event.
$5,000 of this donation will be used
for scholarships for students studying
music at Galston High School who are
members of the ensemble programs.
The $5,000 balance remaining was used
to update the sound systems in the
two music classrooms with state of the
art equipment. These sound systems
are used daily throughout the year and
for the HSC aural examinations and we
thank the committee for giving us the
ability to offer our senior students the
best aural facilities possible. These will
be thoroughly utilised and enjoyed for
years to come.

Guest Speakers will be Mr Christian Lanske, Head
Teacher Student Engagement and Retention, and Ms
Carolyn Carden, Agriculture Teacher and Year 9 Adviser.
Christian and Carolyn will be outlining the programs
they have been operating throughout the school year
and the opportunities that can be offered to students
who are transitioning from school to work or from junior
to senior high school.
Come along for help with
homework and assignments.
Afternoon tea will be served!
Teachers from Maths and
English will be available to

happening in your child’s school.
Student Medical Forms
During Terms 3 & 4 we will be updating
our medical records system to
ensure we have the most up-to-date
information on your child’s health.
Shortly you will be receiving in the mail
a copy of the new forms which you will
need to fill out and return to the school
by 30th August 2013.
The good news is we have already
started collecting some of the
information, which means less for you
to do.
The new forms will help us collect your
child’s important medical information
and the introduction of new systems
will mean we will be able to better
manage the daily and emergency
health needs of your child.
We appreciate your support as we
start collecting the information and if
you have any questions, please call Ms
Koufos, Head Teacher Welfare on

UTS Science School’s Recommendation Scholarship...
Tim Carter, one of our brilliant ex-students who completed Year
12 in 2012, was honoured when he received the UTS Science
School’s Recommendation Scholarship.
The Scholarship is awarded to those students enrolled at UTS
Science recognising their interest in Science or Mathematics,
and academic achievements at high school. Recipients are
awarded with $2,000 annually for three years.
Tim was nominated for the prize by his science teacher and
recommended by the Principal. He received the award during
the last holiday break.
Congratulations Tim! Your hard work and efforts met success.
English Report....
Term 3 is always an exciting
time as we enter the final weeks
of HSC preparation: Trials are
over, final modules are being
taught, revision of the whole
course will soon commence.
It is easy to fixate upon marks,
outcomes and ranks in amongst
all those things, but of course
English is so much more than
that. It is an opportunity to
become an engaged citizen and
critical thinker, an empathetic
person
and
sophisticated
communicator.
In English this year, we have
focused on contextualising
English in the world outside of
school and the HSC, to bring
richness to students’ studies.
To this end, Year 12 Standard
English last week had an
incursion with J.C. Burke, author
of the HSC text The Story of
Tom Brennan. Students had the
opportunity to hear the author
give her insights into the text as
well as ask questions of her. So,
too, Year 12 Advanced English
had their own opportunity to
meet one of their authors at the
end of last term. In an excursion
to the Sydney Jewish Museum,
students heard Mark Baker speak
about his book, The Fiftieth Gate,
giving a profound insight into
the structuring and significance
of the text.
Alyssa Saunders has written
a detailed account of the
Advanced experience below.
Next term, we are investigating
an excursion to see a production
of Shakespeare’s As You Like It to
support the new cohort of 2014
HSC students.
The Fiftieth Gate/Mark Baker
Excursion - Alyssa Saunders, Year
12 Advanced English
During last term, the Advanced
English students of Galston High
were privileged to take part in
an excursion to the Australian
Jewish Museum in the city.
Thanks to Miss Warby ‘pulling
a few strings’, both Advanced
classes were able to experience
a fun whilst productive time.
The reason for this excursion
was to give a historical insight
into the background of the
novel ‘The 50th Gate’, which the
students were going to have
to study extensively this term
in preparation for completing
their HSC Exams in the coming
months. (3 months people!!! >.<)
During this excursion, we
boarded a bus and travelled
to the city, once we reached
our destination entered into
the lecture, held by one of
the members of the museum,
giving us details and aspects of
WWII, particularly the affects it
had on the Jewish community.
We learnt about some of the
horrible events that took place in
the Holocaust, and that the word
actually means ‘sacrifice by fire’.
We were shown many aspects of
the Jewish life in the museum,
where there were so many
interesting and educational
artefacts, pictures, documents
and visual digital aids that helped
us understand the time and
place in which our prescribed
text was coming from.
Some of the most interesting
sights in the building were a
sandstone wall carved with
images of Jewish people, clothing
and possessions of people
from the war who had either
survived and told their story, or
the families who lost loved ones
and felt their contribution to
the museum was the best way
to honour their memory. Other
artefacts included newspaper
articles form the era, and copious
amounts of all kinds of pictures
- family and friends, adults and
children - all of them moments
that captured something of the
circumstances and events that
surround a very dark chapter of
human history.
The
most
amazing
and
heartbreaking
feature
of
the museum which held the
attention of every student who
entered was the eerie memorial
created for the children that
never survived the war. Many
students - myself included walked into this section, where
no one spoke, seeing the wall
covered completely with the
faces and names of as many of
those children as possible and
re-emerged with tears running
down our faces. But in the middle
of the memorial, which was
what made it so amazing, was a
suspended glass bowl, perfectly
measured, to hold exactly 1.5
million drops of water, one for
every child that died in the
Holocaust.
The entire museum experience
was both confronting but
illuminating, giving all the
Advanced English students a
deep and broad understanding
of the impacts WWII and the
Holocaust had on the Jewish
community and its relevance to
The Fiftieth Gate.
English Report cont’d...
We also were given the opportunity to listen to two
speakers. The first speaker was an actual Holocaust
survivor. He told us his story of how he and his
family survived the dark days of WWII and he shared
with us his experiences and memories. This was
beneficial to the study of the Advanced students
because, besides what we could see in the museum,
we could hear the real story from a survivor and were
able to ask him a variety of questions that helped us
gain even more of an understanding towards this
terms topic.
The second speaker was the author of The Fiftieth
Gate, Mark Baker. He started by giving us a brief
overview of his novel, then background information
into why he wrote the way his did and some of the
key aspects of his text and the influences upon it. It
was great to listen to him; we all found some form
of enlightenment in the things he had to say and
it helped adapt our mindset to better suit what the
author was trying to portray. Being able to see and
understand the underlying concepts held within the
studied text enabled the Advanced class to improve
their own knowledge base and work with this text
with the least amount of confusion possible, as it is
a very difficult text to comprehend at certain points.
Overall, all the students who attended this event
found so much valuable information that we
could all later use in our classes, studies and HSC
exams. Being able to go on this excursion gave
us the foundation on which we could build our
understanding. With the background knowledge in
hand and the personal insight of Mark Baker himself,
all the Advanced students have been able to use
their new found knowledge to help themselves and
their peers make it through our last ever module for
HSC English.
Mr Cosgrove, the teachers of both classes who
made this happen and gave us the best possible
start to this last term of work. So on behalf of
all the student in the Advanced English course
at Galston High, thank you for caring so much
about your students and making English fun!
The Story of Tom Brennan/J.C. Burke Excursion J.C. Burke, Year 12 Standard English
On the 2nd of August students from year 12
Standard English had an incredible opportunity
to meet the author of their HSC text ‘The Story
of Tom Brennan’. The Author J.C Burke gave an
insightful presentation where students learned
of the process which she went through in
creating her text as well as hearing her personal
opinion on key points and techniques within the
book that directly related to the concept studied
by Year 12 of the world. Students where then
allowed a time to ask questions which was a
brilliant opportunity for students to gain further
understanding and knowledge of the text and
how it is linked to the year 12 concept.
For me this was one of the most productive
and interesting experiences from my time here
at Galston High. The information gained was
invaluable and allowed me to see the text in a
new light through the experiences and examples
given by J.C Burke. But for me the most valuable
part of the whole experience was the opportunity
to ask J.C Burke questions as it allowed me to
gain answers to questions I never thought I
would ever attain giving me a new perspective
on the book. I strongly believe that the notes and
experience gain from this event will give me an
amazing advantage in my HSC and will be held
A massive thanks should be given to Miss Warby and in my memory for some time to come.
Ku-ring-gai Zone Cross Country
Congratulations to the following cross country
runners who placed in the top 8 at the Ku-ringgai Zone carnival on 20th May 2013 and will
now progress to the Sydney North carnival on
13th June 2013 at Gosford.
Danielle Cook 4th - 12 years girls
Sara Mills 8th - 16 years girls
Joshua Webb - bronze medal -12 years boys
Callum Trethowan - silver medal -13 years
boys
Oliver Clarke - 4th - 14 years boys
Matthew Jeffrey - 6th - 15 years boys
Well done to all our representatives who
competed under trying conditions due to
recent heavy rain making the track particularly
heavy.
Their courageous performances
enabled the following placings Matt-22nd,
Sara-15th, Danielle-11th, Josh-7th, Callum5th and Oliver being our most successful
runner on the day gaining a bronze medal.
The latter three have now qualified for the All
School State Cross Country Championships
at Eastern Creek on the 19th July 2013 where
they will be competing against the best from
both the state and private school systems.
This event was also plagued by poor weather
with torrential rain and blustery conditions
making the course a genuine test of
endurance. Despite this our boys performed
up to their personal best with Oliver running
first and placing 48th overall and 31st in
the C.H.S system. Josh was next and he ran
equally well to place 45th overall and 29th in
the C.H.S system. Callum was last to compete
and with his nerves escalating rapidly it was
probably a great relief when the gun went
off! His finish made a great finale to the day
as he stormed home to place 19th and 11th
in the C.H.S category. Considering most races
had in excess of 100 competitors our boys
did brilliantly and were rewarded with state
medals in the following colours as part of
successful Sydney North teams; Josh silver
and Oliver and Callum gold!

the term due to his excellent level of control
and fine judgement.
Term 2 saw a large group of Galston High
students volunteer to assist at the Dural
Primary schools cross country carnival and
the subsequent Beecroft Zone cross country
event. In their role as officials they directed,
encouraged and ensured the safety of all
competitors with great responsibility bringing
considerable credit back to the school in the
process. Thanks to the following for their
involvement.
Congratulations to Isabella Psakis, Lucy
Quaken, Laura Sawyer, Stella Wildey Year7,
Taliah Clark, Tiarna Davies, Sally Parkinson

the season while umpiring State Knockout
matches for a number of the local primary
schools with great authority and judgement.
All School State Cross Country Report
The 19th July was a cold winter morning at
Eastern Creek Raceway to run in my 3km State
Cross Country.
race I felt as though I could hardly breathe. My
legs were burning, but I was determined to run
the best I could.
The day was full of all sorts of weather, sun to
start, followed by wind and rain.
I quite enjoyed the race as it had some great
long hard hills (which I love), as I run I could
catch fellow competitors who found the hills
tough going.
My day started with walking the course early
at 8.00am. It was extremely cold, but quite
sunny at this time. The weather quickly
changed many times during the day. It rained
and was extremely cold at times. It was also
windy most of the day as I waited nervously to
run my race at 1.30pm.
By the time I ran the rain had stopped but it
had left the track extremely muddy and awful
to run on.
The gun went and all my nerves left me. I was
finally running my race. My throat felt like I
had had no water in weeks. Throughout the
As I ran the last straight I was aching all over.
But I wasn’t giving up. I ran the last 300m with
a group of 4 finishing in a tied position of 18th
out of 104 starers.
It was a great day from start to finish, even with
all my pre-race nerves!
I’m now looking forward to hopefully being
able to run again at the same carnival next year,
and further improve on this year’s result.
Callum Trethown - Year 7
Cross Country - Sydney North Team
On Friday 19th of July 2013 I represented the
Sydney North Team at the State Cross Country
at Eastern Creek. At 12.45pm my race was
called and I headed over the the marshalling
area. At 1.00pm BANG! the race started. It
was very muddy and all 94 runners were
trying to find a comfortable spot and get a
good position.
As we came to the last 100m we were dragging
our shoes full of mud over the finish line.
As we passed the half way mark we were
covered in mud. Slipping and sliding we were
trying to keep our grip whilst running up and
down heart breaking hills. As we were coming
to the last 600m all our shoes were sopping
wet with mud and sweat.
What a great experience and what a nice group
of guys in the Sydney North Team.
When we finished the race we were all huffing
and puffing as we struggled to walk over to the
water stand. All of the Sydney North runners
got together to discuss the race and the position
we came.

Prefects’ Report...
It has come to that time of year
again, where we begin the process
of electing a new prefect body.
What a busy few weeks this has
been!
A group of our Year 11 students
are currently undergoing the
selection process to be a part of
the 2014 prefect body. This process
has so far involved these students
submitting a written profile. Those
students were successful in the
written application process, were
then required to present a speech
in front of staff, as well as the Year
10 and 11 student body. These
speeches were delivered Monday
this week, and the successful ten
shall form the 2014 Prefect Body.
Successful applicants were:

3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

other leadership roles in the school
will be offered to them.
The successful ten will be
announced next week, and from
there the new team will undergo a
leadership day, and a final interview
to determine the roles of the senior
executive (captains, vice captains,
senior prefects, prefects).
Although it is sad for us to think
that our time is nearly up, we are
all very excited to see what the new
team will offer!

P&C Working Bee - Sunday 15th September
The P&C will be holding a Working Bee on Sunday 15th
September 2013, from 8am til 12.30pm, to beautify our
school grounds.
We would love to see as many parents, carers and
students as possible on the day, even if you can only
spare an hour or so.
Bring along your gardening gloves and any tools you
may have so that we can prepare our beautiful gardens
for the Spring and Summer months.
Our Prefect Body, Student Leaders and Student
Representative Council will also be present on the day
and morning tea and lunch will be provided.
Ensure you bring a hat, protective clothing and
sunscreen.
We are aiming to lay some more sandstone along the
entrance pathway to the main quadrangle, complete
the planting along this walkway, plant and landscape
on either side of the common room, maintain Waddell
Cottage and generally prune and tidy various gardens
throughout the school.
It is always a fun day and a great way to meet other
families that are part of our wonderful school
community. We look forward to seeing you.

Regional Orienteering Championships
On Friday 2nd of August 13 keen athletes contested their initial orienteering
Championships at St Ives showground in marvellous surroundings .Despite
being new to the sport most acquitted themselves particularly well to
negotiate the tricky courses with pleasing accuracy although a few just
liked to run and explore regardless of where the map was directing them
to go. Infact it was quite entertaining to watch the start where athletes
were sent off at 1 minute intervals and they headed off in all directions
despite being issued with the same course instructions.
At the concluding presentations our team had placed 2nd in the schools
championships which was a mighty effort on debut with a number of
individuals gaining premier placings including 1st to Odesssa Jones,2nd to
Callum Trethowan and Emily Byrne and 3rd to Ryan Hogan and Tye Davies.
Our other comptitors included-Isaiah Baker, Lucas Gamlin, Oliver Clarke,
Myrridas Jones, Shanise Jones, Josh Webb, Amy Nealon, Lucy Quaken.
