class
Dining,

activities, unlike St. Lucia has ever seen
before. Such varied and exotic selections that
are sure to make Baywalk the heartbeat of
Rodney Bay.
On approaching Baywalk one is simply awed
by its architectural design that starts at its
majestic sidewalk. At the top of the Mall’s
Grand Stairway one is eagerly drawn forward
by transparent doors that give a hint of all the
shopping options that are available. These
include popular favourites like Basic Blue to
Internationally renowned brands such as
Hugo Boss, Casa Bella and MAC. Up above is
a Sky Atrium that lets in cool breeze and the
warmth of the island’s natural sunlight,
allowing one to be relaxed and comfortable
whilst shopping or hanging out with friends.
As evening draws nearer Baywalk takes on a
new life. Popular hangout spots include bars
and lounges for ‘liming’ and catching up with
what’s happening. Now that you’ve had a drink
head on over to one of our many onsite restaurants. There are choices such as Sushi,
Indian, and Italian to satisfy the most discerning palate. End the night by taking a chance
on winning all that you’ve spent for the day at
Treasure Bay, St.Lucia’s one and only casino.
Other features of Baywalk include Royal Bank
of Canada, GL supermarket, and a 400 space
parking lot. And if that’s not enough, there are
thirty luxurious apartments with breath taking
views of the Caribbean Sea and Rodney Bay
Marina, available for purchase.
Baywalk, revolutionising shopping and living in
St. Lucia.

With the beach right
on your doorstep
and the determination to leave with a tan, you may
think there’s no need to leave your hotel. Err… Wrong!
There is so much more to St. Lucia that you’d be missing
out if you didn’t venture further. During your stay, we
recommend taking a tour or hiring a car to explore in
your own time. Trust us, it’s the best way to form long
lasting memories so you’ll thank us in the end!
Paradise has some great suggestions for exploring off
the beaten track but we also have a few words of advice
in your quest for new discoveries. Ensure that you
are suitably prepared before venturing into the more
isolated parts of the island and let someone know where
you are going. Be safety conscious when you’re in the
unknown. St. Lucia is a friendly country but as with
anywhere, it is best to keep your wits about you whilst off
the beaten track. It may sound obvious but be courteous
to others and they are likely to be courteous back to you.
Quick checklist:
Preparation
for
Exploration

- Pack a swimsuit and towel… beaches &
waterfalls are plentiful!

activities
and also easier for hiking
- A large bottle of water per person - it’s hot!
- If hiring a car, a driver’s permit is required in

- ID and cash - preferably EC dollars (many local
vendors don’t accept US)
- Phone number of the hotel or accommodation
where you’re staying
- Sense of adventure!
For ideas on what to see and do, see page 32.
Ask your hotel for details on particular areas

Pigeon Island
If you’re confused about the name, don’t be. This national landmark used to be an island
until the 1970s when the lagoon was dredged to establish Rodney Bay Marina. The material was deposited between the mainland and the island creating a causeway connecting
the two land masses. Sandals Grande and The Landings are two of St. Lucia’s luxury hotels
now located on the site. During your stay, we recommend at least a half-day at Pigeon
Island National Park. Walking up to Fort Rodney is a must and if you make it to Signal Hill
(the top peak), then a cool beverage or meal afterwards will be well deserved. Jambe de
Bois is a lovely rustic restaurant on the water’s edge overlooking the whole of Rodney Bay.
With the small and pretty beaches you can enjoy a quick dip too! Then, after wandering
through the military ruins on the hillside, Captain Cellars pub is in a great spot and has a
cosy old English feel to it. Close enough to the hotels in Rodney Bay, but far enough away
for you to feel like you have done some exploration, Pigeon Island is ideal for relaxing and
learning about St. Lucia’s interesting past.
Gros Islet
This is the local fishing village set between Pigeon Island and Rodney Bay. In the daytime,
go past the colourful Caribbean houses and visit the church. Then on Friday evenings, join
the street party for the weekly fish fry known as Jump-Up. It’s one of the few occasions
where locals and tourists mix properly. You can get a cheap meal of fish, lobster, chicken,
pork or lambi (conch) with all the trimmings. The loud music and partying goes on into
the early hours. It is recommended to stay in the main areas and leave valuables behind.
Rodney Bay
This is the busiest tourist area of St. Lucia. Reduit Beach is the most popular one on the island with a long stretch of golden sand, resorts, beach lounges, water sports and vendors.
The hub of entertainment runs along Reduit Drive, with many hotels, bars, restaurants
and shops. With a choice of Caribbean, Indian, Chinese, French, Thai, Italian, Mexican or
American, the restaurants cater to all tastes. There are three supermarkets and two shopping centres, the newest being the Baywalk Mall with international brands and duty free.
Rodney Bay hosts the finish line for the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), when every
Nov-Dec yachts race across the ocean from Las Palmas to berth at Rodney Bay Marina. By
road, the entrance is on the main highway behind the lagoon. Inside the marina village,
you’ll find a mixture of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, all on the water’s edge set amid
the buzzing, yachting atmosphere. Open to the general public, the marina is an international yachting facility, catering for all vessels from small open boats to mega yachts of the
rich and famous.
North West
Castries
Castries is St. Lucia’s capital city and is both the commercial and governmental centre.
It is the largest town on the island and always a hive of activity because over a third of
the population lives here. The harbour is also a port of call for hundreds of cruise ships
every year, able to dock up to four ships at a time, so there are often plenty of visitors
walking around too. A huge market sells arts and crafts, fruit and vegetables, spices and
more. The two duty free shopping malls and boutique shops throughout the town mean
you can easily find all your souvenirs in Castries. You can also buy fresh fish for a good
price on the roadside when the local fishing boats come in. Don’t miss strolling through
the Derek Walcott Square and exploring inside the elaborately decorated cathedral when
visiting the town.

Marigot Bay
Further south, you’ll find this delightful gem of Marigot Bay. Nestled in a natural hurricane
hole it is often quoted as the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean. In 1967, it caught the
attention of the Doctor Dolittle filmmakers. The bay has also featured in a couple of other
movies, so you may already recognize it! As a popular yachting destination, it hosts a
marina, spa, café, restaurants, some boutiques and a hotel all on the waterfront. Enjoy a
coffee or an ice cream before taking the short ferry ride across the harbour to the beach
covered in coconut trees and relax with a good book. Dolittles restaurant is also on the
waterfront along with kayaks and hobie cats for hire. In the evening treat yourself to an
exquisite meal at Rainforest Hideaway, one of the most romantic restaurants on the island.
West Coast
The west coast is incredibly scenic and exhibits some of the true heart of St. Lucia as you
drive through lush rainforest and pretty Caribbean towns. There are many viewpoints and
photo opportunities so be camera-ready!
Anse La Raye
Translated as “Bay of Rays”, this fishing town is typically Caribbean with a big community vibe. There’s always some spectacle going on, whether it’s a team playing soccer,
chickens being chased in the street, or just people watching the day go by. The weekly
“Seafood Friday” serves BBQ and steamed fish on the waterfront. Catering for locals and
tourists alike, it is a great get-together for friends and family.
Nearby attractions include La Sikwi sugar mill, Anse La Ray Falls and River Rock Falls found
further inland.

On towards Canaries
The winding road follows the coastline so take your time and enjoy the experience of being on a Caribbean island. The delightful beach of Anse Cochon at Ti Kaye is a fantastic
spot for diving and snorkeling. Further on in Anse La Verdure you’ll find Plas Kassav, a traditional cassava bakery selling a variety of different flavoured breads. Drive on and you’ll
reach Canaries. This quaint fishing village is very is pretty and colourful with a wonderful
vista from the south. Canaries waterfall is located in the Grand Bois Reserve about three
miles inland. Continue on the main road and you’ll soon arrive in Soufriere.
Soufriere
This was St. Lucia’s first town, established by the French in 1746. It is distinguished by its colonial architecture and of course, the majestic Pitons in full view. It
is a centre for agriculture and tourism. Translated, Soufriere literally means “sulphur in
the air”, and the pungent smell surely attests to that, emanating from the drive-in volcano
and sulphur springs in the hills behind the town. There are many fascinating attractions
close to Soufriere including Diamond Falls and the Botanical Gardens, Toraille Falls, cocoa
plantations, mineral mud baths, hiking trails, gorgeous beaches perfect for snorkeling and
diving and the Pitons themselves. There are also some stunning places to sit and enjoy a
drink or meal, such as Ladera Resort, located right between the Pitons with a view that really takes your breath away. Whether you’re in search of relaxation or adventure, Soufriere
is an ideal base to see and do most of the activities in the south of St. Lucia.

Laborie
Named after the French governor of St. Lucia in the 1780s, the first settlers of this quaint
village were French colonists. Traditionally a fishing village, reefs protect the pretty beach
and the bay is a calm anchorage for visiting yachtsmen looking for an authentic experience
of St. Lucia.
Vieux Fort
During World War II, the low-lying land at the foot of the island presented an ideal location for the American military airfield. Since then, it has been renovated into what is now
Hewanorra International airport, bringing in thousands of tourists each year and making
St. Lucia more accessible to the world. The town itself, although has a long history, is now
a commercial centre and the second largest port. There is not much in the way of tourism in the town centre, but the surrounding scenic attractions make it well worth the visit.
• Moule à Chique Lighthouse is on St. Lucia’s most southerly point and has one of the finest viewpoints on the island. Funny fact: It was actually intended for Saint Lucia Cape in
South Africa but brought to the island by mistake!
• Anse des Sables (a.k.a. Sandy Beach) is one of the most stunning beaches in St. Lucia
and fortunately is still undeveloped, making its beauty truly stand out. It is also the most
popular place for windsurfing and kitesurfing on the island. The Reef Resort hosts an annual Kitesurfing Fiesta in March, attracting sports enthusiasts from all over the world as
well as many spectators.
The Maria Islands
Declared a nature reserve in 1982, these two islands are unique for their wildlife habitat
not found on mainland St Lucia. The site is home to five endemic reptiles including the
world’s rarest snake called the Kouwés or Saint Lucia Racer. There are over eighty plant
species and it is also a nesting site for migratory birds. Coral reefs surround the island
so the snorkeling is also wonderful. A fascinating excursion for all nature lovers, you can
spend the day here by enquiring at your hotel or contact the St. Lucia National Trust,
which manages the site.
East Coast
If you landed in Hewanorra aiport and are staying in the north, it’s more than likely you
drove up this coast and took in magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Grand Anse
This bay holds the longest stretch of sand in St. Lucia but it is remote and requires a 4WD
for access. However, it is gorgeous and well worth the effort particularly between March
and August which is the time for turtle nesting. If you want to take the opportunity to see
nature at its best, go and watch the giant Leatherbacks slowly clamber up the beach to
lay their eggs. Tours are overnight excursions.
Fond d’Or
The Heritage Tourism Site here is very interesting. Visit an old sugar plantation, walk
among the ruins and learn about local fruits, herbs and their traditional medicinal
properties. There are also spectacular views of the coastline but the strong rips and
currents make it unadvisable to swim. From above, see if you can make out the profile of
an old man and a lion in the rocks.
Dennery
The Saturday night Seafood Fiesta is a relaxed community event right on the beachfront.
It’s just as fun as the Gros Islet “Jump Up” but it’s probably more family friendly. Primarily
a fishing village, there’s not much else for tourists in Dennery itself except if you’d like to
look round the church. The turn off for the Treetop Adventure Park (for ziplining, cycling
and hiking) is next to the river on the main road. If driving, there is a fantastic viewpoint
from the local bar up on the hillside to the south of Dennery, a perfect stopping point for
a cool drink when travelling the length of the island.
Paradise Saint Lucia 30
Praslin
This is a small village which you will more than likely just pass through. However, just
further south is the turn off for Mamiku Botanical Gardens. This is a beautiful display of
both nature and Caribbean history. The tropical woodland trails and landscaped gardens
are set amid 18th century French ruins. If you’re a plant lover or nature enthusiast, then
you might just find your piece of paradise here. There are hundreds of different types of
flora for you to enjoy in your own time and a refreshment bar for afterwards.

Beach
All beaches in St. Lucia are public. There are no private beaches so don’t be intimidated
by some of the hotels which may appear to own them. Beach access is available to everyone and some all-inclusive hotels offer day passes if you would like to use their facilities.
The west coast of the island, beside the Caribbean Sea generally has the more sheltered
shores, and you’ll find the more ruggedly beautiful, wild and secluded beaches on the
Atlantic coast which are also harder to reach. St Lucia has so many gorgeous beaches on
which to relax and have fun, so here are just a few we recommend:
• Anse Chastanet (at Jade Mountain)
Paradise? This beach has some of the clearest waters you’ll find in St. Lucia… beautiful.
How to get there: Driving south towards Soufriere, turn right just before you enter the
town. This leads up a very steep and bumpy track so a jeep is preferable but not essential.
Follow the lane up and over the hill and you’ll arrive in the visitor car park at the bottom.
• Anse des Pitons (at Jalousie Resort)
Paradise? Definitely not one to be missed – it is stunning. Laze on the soft white sand and
gaze up at the Pitons. Set right between the peaks, the view looking up is as spectacular
as the one snorkeling below in the crystal clear water.
How to get there: On the road south of Soufriere, take the turn off to Jalousie and follow it to the resort.
Paradise Saint Lucia 36
• Cariblue Beach (at Le Sport)
Paradise? The darker sand makes the water
exceptionally clear; a dip feels so refreshing
and there’s a good spot for snorkeling too at
the northern end. To take full advantage of
this location, purchase a day or half-day pass
from reception and get all your food, drinks
and sun lounger included.
How to get there: Drive north to Cap Estate,
turn left at both roundabouts and follow the
road down to the resort.
• Labrelotte Bay (at Windjammer
Resort)
Paradise? It’s how you imagine a typical Caribbean scene. Palm trees line the golden
sand. There’s a
beach bar and casual restaurant serving local and international dishes with
a live Caribbean band every Sunday
lunchtime.
How to get there: Heading south
out of Rodney Bay, turn right in Bois
d’Orange to Windjammer Landing
and follow to the end.
• Anse Lavoutte (Five Dollar Beach)
Paradise? An ultimate escape, a gorgeous wild beach where you’re sure to find a private
spot (except maybe on the weekend when it’s popular with the locals). If you loved Cas
En Bas, you’ll love this even more. It’s definitely trickier to reach, but well worth it. Take
drinks and a picnic - you’re in the middle of nowhere here!
How to get there: Located on the Atlantic side, it requires off-roading so a 4WD is essential. Turn right opposite the International Pony Club, follow the track heading east until
the track narrows but you can turn right (there’s a fenced house on the corner). Follow this
track to the end. There is an EC$5 entry fee to get down to the beach where you can park.
• The Landings Beach
Paradise? Still in beautiful Rodney Bay, this is much quieter than Reduit Beach and easier
to find a peaceful place for you, your towel and a good book. There are often horses freely
grazing on the open land behind you. Popular with locals, it’s also a great spot for friends
and family to enjoy a BBQ beside the beach on weekends.
How to get there: Drive towards Pigeon Island and turn left off the road at The Landings
Resort. Follow the road round as it turns into a gravel track.
What’s New on the
island?
Been there, done that? If you’re a regular visitor to St. Lucia, you may think
you’ve seen and done it all and can now just spend your days relaxing on the
beach. However, with the growing popularity of this idyllic isle, here are a
few new attractions that might have cropped up since you were last here:
Lianna’s Ransom
Ahoy there! With the Brig Unicorn reaching retirement,
there’s a new pirate ship roaming the island! The entire
family can have fun as you step aboard an 18th century
replica pirate ship. From Sea Spray Cruises, Lianna’s Ransom is a gaff-rigged schooner offering daytime and sunset tours departing from Rodney Bay Marina. The Pirate
Family Adventure runs from 8.30am – 4pm and sets sail
down the west coast. You’ll disembark to visit attractions
in Soufriere and also call in at Marigot Bay. The tour includes lunch aboard and a swim stop on the way back
up north. Kids can revel in the excitement dressed up as
pirates, seeking treasure, even firing cannons and walking the plank! The Sunset Cruise runs from 5pm – 7pm
offers a spectacular end to the day, passing Pigeon Island,
watching the sun go down and listening to a live steel
pan band onboard as the evening sets in. Rum & fruit
punches, sodas and champagne are served along with
hors d’oeuvres. These tours are both run twice a week
so we recommend booking in advance so you don’t miss
out.

Segway Tours
Have you seen people on those peculiar looking two-wheeler contraptions
and secretly always wanted to have a go? Well now you can! LucianStyle
in Rodney Bay offers eco-friendly X2 Segway tours. Don’t worry – it’s easy
to learn and you’ll get a lesson on the practice track before heading off to
explore. The Mount Pimard Tour overlooks St. Lucia’s phenomenal west
coast above Reduit beach. You will glide past beautiful flora, ocean vistas
and enjoy stunning Lucian settings. It’s a fantastic way to see beautiful views
minus the hike! The informative tour runs four times a day for 1.5 hours and
local fruit and juices are provided. Another option is the two-hour sunset
tour which includes a local dinner on the beach. Alternatively, if you don’t
have much time, you can always just pop in for a quick thrill of a 20 minute
glide around the practice track in Rodney Bay!

Soufriere Hotwire Rides
This unique new zipling experience lets you feel the adrenaline rush of whizzing through the air whilst being surrounded by the spectacular scenery of
the south including Petit Piton in full view. Eight ziplines lead through Morne
Coubaril Estate, starting with showing off panoramic views of St. Lucia’s famous Pitons and the historical town of Soufriere with the Caribbean Sea
below. The cables then lead you into a canopy of banyan, coconut, plum
and mango trees and across a bamboo-shadowed gorge. See, smell and
hear the thriving ecosystem below and learn from your experienced guides.
Great fun and an exhilarating, be sure to visit whilst in the south! In regards

Sounds dirty? Actually, the minerals in the
mud are incredibly good for you and it’s even
been suggested that bathing can make you
look 10 years younger. We’re not sure how
true that is but there’s definitely something to
be said for slathering on the warm, sticky mud all
over each others bodies and then having a long,
relaxing soak to rinse off. It’s fun, invigorating and
will get you in touch with your wild side, plus your skin
will feel soft and smooth!
Snorkeling or diving
Whichever your preference, getting in the water with your
loved one, holding hands and drifting through the wondrous
under water world is simply awe inspiring. Share special moments
spotting sea life in the clear, cool, refreshing Caribbean Sea. The
reefs and tropical fish off Anse Chastanet, Anse Cochon and Petit
Piton are a few of the most mesmerizing.
Taking in a glorious Caribbean sunset
Depending on the time of year, the sun sets in St. Lucia between 5.30 –
6.30pm (earlier in winter & later in summer), so it’s advised to arrive at your
Paradise Saint Lucia 40
Paradise Saint Lucia 40
location in plenty of time. On a clear evening, you might be lucky
enough to photograph the green flash, which occurs just
before the sun disappears. The sky is often more dramatic
after the sun has gone, so it’s worth waiting around to see
what happens.
Ziplining
Firstly, it should be pointed out that this is not
especially pretty – you do have to don hairnets,
helmets and a harness which is… let’s just say…
not the sexiest thing you could wear! Luckily, it’s
not a fashion show and what you’re really here
for is to explore the rainforest and feel the rush
as you fly through the trees, get your adrenalin
pumping and enjoy the ride! Ziplining may not be
the obvious choice for romance, but you might be
ready for some action of another kind when you
get back to your hotel if you know what I mean!
Horse riding
What could be more romantic than riding down a
beautiful beach with the wind in your hair? Perhaps
riding the horse into the ocean for a swim? Well you
can do both of these with the International Pony Club
or Trims National Riding Academy in the north of the
island. Great trail rides and the windswept Atlantic
beaches are a unique and fun way to explore off the
beaten track.

Pampering in
Paradise
Sea, Sand & SPAS!
The term “paradise”, has biblical connotations to Eden, and cosmologically indicates
the time before the world fell from grace.
However, we now tend to refer to it to mean
any place in which existence is positive, harmonious and timeless. It represents the opposite of human troubles. In “paradise” there
is only peace, prosperity and happiness.
With St. Lucia in mind, the simple definition that paradise is any place of complete
bliss, delight and peace suits perfectly, and
indulging in a massage might be just the way
to go about experiencing it!
With the hustle and bustle of everyday life,
one does not always take enough time to
relax. However, at some point, it becomes
necessary to rejuvenate and re-energise
your body and mind, even for a short time.
A massage is the perfect way to loosen up
even the most reluctant body! The most important thing is to enjoy the experience and
feel good afterwards, so arrive 15 minutes
early so that you can check in, change and
begin to relax.
St. Lucia is a haven for spas – both with spa
resorts and local day spas all over the island.
Paradise Saint Lucia 42
There is a huge variety of options available and varying massage techniques
hailing from all over the world, so if you
usually deny treating yourself, and you’re
too embarrassed to ask what half of them
mean, here’s a few explanations for the
different types of massage you’ll find
available in St. Lucia:
Swedish Massage: This is
the most common type of massage and
a great one to try if you’ve not had one
before. Using massage oil, the technique
is smooth gliding strokes, some kneading
and stretching to soothe and relax aching
muscles. You can ask for it to be firmer or
lighter as is your preference. The idea is
to reduce stress, ease muscle tension and
provide deep relaxation to recharge the
mind and body.
Deep
Tissue
Massage:
Similar to the Swedish massage, this
technique focuses on the deeper layers
of muscle tissue to release tension (or
knots) in the body with slow strokes
and deep finger pressure on contracted areas. It is therefore much
firmer than the Swedish massage
and therapeutic for alleviating
sports related injuries.
Aromatherapy Massage: Again, this is another
step on from the Swedish and
Deep Tissues Massages. This light
massage uses similar techniques
but with the addition of blending essential oils such as peppermint or lavender in with the massage oil. It’s best
for the therapist to know where your specific pain lies so that they can choose the right
essential oil for you.
Hot Stone Massage: Becoming very
popular, this treatment involves using smooth,
rounded stones that have been warmed in hot
water. The stones act as an extension of the hands
whilst massaging, and are then placed on your stomach, hands or back. The heat warms the muscles to relax
them and you.
Shiatsu: This is a Japanese massage technique of rhythmic localised
pressure using fingers and thumbs to stimulate pressure points and improve energy flow.
Clients may describe it as “good pain” and it improves circulation, relieves muscles and
alleviates stress.
Thai Massage: In this treatment, you keep your clothes on, so wear something
loose and comfortable. No oils are used and it’s often done on a mat on the floor. With
rhythmic pressing and stretching all over the body, this is a more rigorous and energizing
massage. Your body might be pulled into yoga-like stretches so it’s great for improving
balance and flexibility.
Many massage treatment packages include an exfoliation or a body polish. Exfoliating
is key to maintaining healthy skin. It scrubs off the dead skin cells that give a dull appearance, so that your youthful, bright skin can shine through! A body polish is a popular treatment that exfoliates the skin using materials such as salt, sugar or coffee grounds mixed
with essential oils, leaving it soft and smooth. Many spas also offer couples massages, so
whilst you’re here on a tropical island, why not take it one step further and pamper yourself and your partner in paradise!
For a budget spa option, head to the Sulphur Springs in Soufriere and slather on the
mineral mud all over your body, exfoliate a little and as with a mask, let it dry before then
soaking in the hot spring. It’s said to have the effect of making you 10 years younger!
We’re not sure how true that is, but can tell you that after washing, your skin will feel incredibly soft and smooth!
Here at Paradise, we
think there are a few typically
St. Lucian things you simply have to
try. See if you can complete them all before it’s
time to go home.
Step aboard and view St. Lucia from the sea
Whether you prefer motoring or sailing, fishing, diving, snorkeling, or swimming, seeing
St. Lucia from a boat is a must. After all, it’s how the original explorers first saw our island
too! Enjoy going into the different bays and beaches, seeing the Pitons and taking in the
majestic beauty of the landscape, all whilst feeling the wind in your hair and tasting the
salt on your tongue!
Drink from a coconut
There are plenty of beach vendors who will help you with this one. Coconuts are healthy
and refreshing. There are three things to try: 1. Drink the delicious water from the young
coconuts – these are the large green ones. 2. Eat the soft white jelly inside or 3. You can
eat the hard white nut of the more mature coconuts – these are the smaller ones with
brown husky shells.
Blow on a conch shell… ‘til you make it work!
This is harder than it looks and sounds but the vendors on the beach may be willing to
teach you if you buy. The advice is that you want a shell with a hole where the mouthpiece
is and to hold your lips taut and blow like you would a brass instrument. After you’ve had
your fun trying, they make a great doorstop or bathroom ornament!
Paradise Saint Lucia 44
Sample the local cuisine
St. Lucia has great taste when it comes to food. You can find food from all over the
world on this little island, but whilst you’re here, you should try the local stuff! Examples
are: Mahi Mahi or pork with a Creole or Jerk sauce, salt fish with green fig (green banana),
callaloo soup, cassava bread, okra, roti (curried wrap with a variety of fillings), or try a coal
pot for a unique dining experience.
Mix with the locals at a fish fry
Community fish frys are a weekly event and a great way of getting everyone together.
On a Friday night head to Anse La Raye for a local experience or to Gros Islet Jump-Up to
join a notorious party scene. Dennery’s fish fry is on a Satuday night. They’re great fun,
will get pretty loud and all go on ‘til late so we recommend going early evening if you’re
looking for a more family friendly atmosphere. Also caution is advised – be sensible and
don’t stray from the main scene.
Visit a plantation
Whether it be banana, cocoa or sugar plantations, marvel at the history of an old
sugar mill or enjoy learning how existing cocoa plantations operate. You’ll be shown the
production in a natural setting and will come away with a greater understanding of the St.
Lucian economy and history as well as having had the option to taste the finished product.
Venture into the rainforest
Absorb yourself in the cascading palm fronds, listening to the sounds of birds and
streams. See which indigenous species you can spot, perhaps even the St. Lucian Parrot.
There are so many trails to choose from all over the island and different types of terrain,
there’s really no excuse not to go for a hike, but if this doesn’t appeal, then you could try
ziplining past the trees and flash through the rainforest instead!
Sip on a spiced rum
Go on, be daring! You’ll find spiced rum in the local bars – you can’t miss it as it’s often
contained in an enormous bottle full of herbs, spices, berries, leaves and sticks. Every
brew is different and we warn you; it may be tasty but it’s also potent! If it’s too strong for
you, then at least sip on a rum punch cocktail. Admiral Rodney, Chairman’s Reserve and
Crystal Lime are some of the most popular rums on the island but there are plenty more.
Snorkeling or Diving
This has surely got to be an obvious choice. The Caribbean is known for it’s crystal
waters and tropical fish so you’ll find an abundance of them all around the island. Corals,
sponges, fish and a whole new world is just below the surface waiting for your discovery.
Be mesmerized by the gorgeous colours, warm water and maybe even a turtle!
Bathe in a waterfall
Who wouldn’t want to feel the invigoration of being immersed in fresh water? There
are quite a few waterfalls you can either swim or shower under. The water is fresh, clean
and rejuvenating – you’ll feel energized and ready to go again! Toraille or Latille Falls are
great easy choices for a dip with only a short walk and Fond Waterfall and the Parrot Trail’s
waterfall are extremely rewarding to reach if you’re on a hike.
Well, we hope you have fun and laughs experiencing some of St. Lucia’s attractions. By doing all of
these you will surely have made the most of your time in St. Lucia, but for more ideas and activities,
there’s a comprehensive list on page 32.

Endless
Fun Aboard The Endless Summer
St. Lucia is a beautiful and intriguing
island and one of the best ways to enjoy
all that she has to offer is by joining a
tour aboard the Endless Summer. The
catamarans, operated by Endless Summer
Cruises, are all spacious and comfortable,
just suited for a relaxing day on the water.
The sail from the north of the island to
the historical town of Soufriere passes many
interesting sites. The two fishing villages
of Anse la Raye and Canaries are tucked
into quiet little bays of river valleys. The
stone churches can easily be seen from the
sea as a stoic symbol of the island’s early
colonization. The brightly painted canoes
placidly lolling upon the sands are evidence
of St. Lucia’s rich diverse culture. In
between the settlements are lovely coastal
views, the islands verdant foliage dotted
with bright blossoms and impressive cliff
faces battered by white surf as they drop
into the sea. As breathtaking as the views
are on the way, the first glimpse of the
Pitons is awe inspiring. These two peaks
rise sharply and dramatically from the sea’s
surface.
Upon arriving in Soufriere, buses are
ready to take you on a tour of the town
Paradise Saint Lucia 48
and surrounding attractions. The Sulphur
Springs are mystic pools of dark, boiling
waters, a vent for the volcano that lies
beneath. It is the steam escaping from
this caldera that prevents the build up of
pressure needed for more violent volcanic
activity. Thus St. Lucia has not had a major
eruption in over forty thousand years.
The cool pool beneath the falls of La
Toraille holds an amalgamation of minerals
that is great for feeling younger and
relieving the aches of artheritis. The path
to the falls is lined with a variety of tropical
flora, labelled for easy identification. The
nearby Fond Doux Estate holds a lesson in
history and the production of cocoa. After
a brief tour the luncheon buffet of local
Creole cuisine beckons.
During the return trip to the north the
music aboard includes lively reggae and
spurs on the party atmosphere. A stop at
Anse Cochon for swimming only adds more
fun to the day! Afterwards a quick detour
into the beautiful picture perfect Marigot
Bay, the location of several films, leaves you
with many enthralling mental images of this
beautiful island.

SAVOUR THE MAGO EXPERIENCE
Surrounded by lush gardens and tranquil forests, this secluded hillside, hillside gem of a resort
is accentuated with fabulous views of the Pitons from every room. Lounge by the pool and
view the Pitons; sit at the Jungle Restaurant and enjoy that same spectacular view; relax in your
plantation style room and gape unabashed at St Lucia’s stunning signature mountains.
Nature is abundant. Beautiful exotic blooms lies amidst a profusion of green and hummingbirds
flit in and out among the blossoming fruit trees. The unobtrusive architecture is nearly obscured
by the lush surroundings and the spacious rooms hint of colonial years with four-poster beds and
louvered windows that open to the views.
The restaurant incorporates local ingredients to produce a cuisine that reflects hints of Caribbean
cuisine. Sip an island cocktail from the bar that has been cleverly sculpted around a giant mango
tree and volcanic rock formations. Watch the breathtaking view of the Pitons and Soufriere Bay
go into the sunset, followed by the twinkling display of lights from the town.
Conveniently situated just minutes from Soufriere, many activities and major attractions are
within easy reach. Or, if you prefer, simply relax at the Jungle Spa and do nothing at all. You may
wish to sign up for the spa tour that takes in the various mineral springs and waterfalls of the
area. What ever you decide to do during your stay, one thing is for certain—you won’t tire of

Orange & Spice Seared Yellow Fin Tuna with Dried Apricot Breadfruit Brandade, Vegetable Spring Roll & Anis Jus
This issue, Chef Bobo Bergstrom brings us a tantalizing recipe from The

dish!
Ingredients:
4 pc 5-6 oz fresh tuna fish
Orange glaze:
½ cup Fresh orange juice
½ cup Sugar
1 tsp Orange zest
Ground black pepper
The Creole spice for dry rub could be a
standard medium spicy Creole spice mix.
Brandade:
8 oz breadfruit
8 oz standard potato
suitable for mash
3 tbsp local “apricot”
= mommy apple or equal
amount of dried apricots
Butter
2-3 tbsp cooked salt fish
Salt pepper
Springroll:
Carrots
Zucchini
Christophene
Peppers
Spring roll wrapper
Anis jus:
1 cup clear fish stock, 1 small white onion
½ glass dry white wine,1 tbsp dried
aniseeds, 2 seasoning peppers, 2 tbsp
fine soy sauce, Ground white pepper
Paradise Saint Lucia 60
Method:
Begin with reducing all ingredients for
the glaze in a small saucepan and save it
when thick and sticky.
Peel and boil breadfruit and potatoes
in salted water until very tender. Pick the
cooked salt fish and make sure it is entirely
boneless. Chop the apricots in ¼ inch cubes
and sauté lightly in butter. Mash the potato
and breadfruit together with a fork and add
the apricots, salt fish and spices.
Sautee onions for the sauce in
a wide copper based saucepan.
Add wine and allow reducing to
half and add stock, spices and
the other Anis jus ingredients.
Taste with soy sauce and spices.
Cut the ingredients for the
spring roll in equal size strips
and pre-cook all vegetables
in salted water. When the vegetables are
cool, wrap in spring roll wrapper for a 6”
long roll and deep-fry.
Sear the tuna just before serving and
arrange as on the picture. The crispy nest
on top is julienne of leek, crispy deep fried
and drained.
Makes 4 servings
ENJOY!
Rain in Paradise?
Believe it or not, it does rain here in St. Lucia! Being in the tropics, it wouldn’t be “paradise”
without a lush, green, rainforest… and it definitely wouldn’t be tropical, green or lush without
rain!
The annual rainfall is quite high, at about 80 inches per year, but most of the downpours are in
short sharp bursts, so don’t let rain spoil your day – the chances are it won’t last long anyway!
The majority falls between June and November, so here are a few ideas of what to do on a
rainy day in Paradise:
1. Swim in a waterfall… Why not? You’ll get wet anyway and the cool water is so rejuvenating. Toraille Falls is gorgeous and leaves you feeling fresh.
2. Go to the movies… Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you have to miss
out on the latest releases. The Caribbean Cinema complex is air-conditioned and ultra modern. See www.caribbeancinemas.com
3. Take the opportunity to sample the local beer and inventive cocktails on the island. Many
bars & restaurants will be happy to introduce you new and delicious tastes.
4. Go shopping… a perfect excuse to browse the undercover markets and
stalls in Castries to find souvenirs for friends, family… and yourself. For
duty free shopping, head to Baywalk Mall in Rodney Bay, or Point Seraphine and La Place Carenage in Castries.
5. Hit the slots… Treasure Bay Casino in Rodney Bay is brand new, with
all the games you could ask for – slots, poker, roulette, craps, blackjack
and screens at the bar. Try your luck - just remember to bring some ID
(required for all).
So although you can expect plenty of sunshine during your Caribbean escape, just remember that the odd shower or rainy day all helps to keep the
island beautiful! Be happy, embrace the rain and get out and enjoy yourself!

ALSO AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CHARTERS
Experience the real St. Lucia! Fond Estate
is home to a 1200-acre fruit plantation
and tropical rainforest where you discover
magical waterfalls, birds, flowers and the
true beauty of the island hidden away
from your hotel! ATV Paradise Tours offers
both the excitement of exploring on an
All Terrain Vehicle (a Quad Bike), or for
those who prefer to explore on foot, there
are a couple of hiking trails which lead to
stunning waterfalls where you can bathe
and refresh yourself in pure nature!
ATVs
Don’t assume that ATVs are for adrenalin
seekers only. Whilst this may be the tour
for them, this is also an eco-tour for nature
lovers and you can always ride on the back
if you prefer not to drive. All you need is a
sense of adventure! After a safety briefing,
start trekking through a plantation before
heading into the rainforest. Kurt, the guide
and owner of ATV Paradise will stop along
the way to give riding tips, provide juice &
water and talk about the stunning scenery
all around you. The track leads down to
Paradise Saint Lucia 64
the Fond River for a well-deserved rest,
drink and some time to absorb it all. A lot of
hard work and heart has gone into creating
the tracks through the dense forest, which
Kurt did himself so he is enthusiastic about
sharing his knowledge on the birds, animals
& plant life you’re likely to spot. You can
even sample fruit plucked straight off a tree
and hey, it doesn’t get fresher than that!
Once everyone’s got the hang of driving
the ATV, yes, all you adrenalin junkies out
there, you can take the opportunity to get
up some speed, spray some mud about
and scream “Wha-hooooo!” The ATVs are
fully automatic, easy to operate, 4-stroke
and emit low noise. Ages: 10+, but must
be 18 to drive. Tours are private, even if
it’s just you! Wear closed shoes and bring
a swimsuit if you want to bathe in the river.
Duration: 3 hours. No experience
necessary.
Hikes
If the idea of a good walk is more up your
street, then this is a fantastic option. As
you hike through the forest, feel at one
with nature as you stop to listen to the
tranquility of the rainforest. All you can
hear are the birds in the trees, the trickling
of the nearby river and the odd rustle in the
bushes! Look out for the St. Lucian Oreole,
Black Finch and of course, the St. Lucian
Parrot, aka Amazona Versicolar. Vibrantly
coloured flowers, and exotic fruits are also
in abundance. The hikes are great exercise
and will surely take your breath away when
you stop to gaze up in awe at a stunning
waterfall before you! It certainly makes all
the effort worthwhile - if only you could
breathe it all in and bottle it up, you’d make
a fortune!
What to bring: Good walking shoes,
drinking water, swimsuit & towel and a
camera.
The Parrot Trail
If your heart’s desire is to see the St. Lucian
Parrot, then try this hike which so far lives up
to it’s name. ATV Paradise claims they have
yet to do this trail without seeing at least
one St. Lucian Parrot… so there’s every
chance you’ll be in luck too! The parrot’s
call is easily distinguished, so stop, look up
and see if you can find where it’s coming
from. The 110-foot waterfall is spectacular
and after the walk, you’ll definitely want a
dip and appreciate the refreshing water, as
well as the opportunity to relax and take in
the rainforest surroundings.
Duration: 4 hours Rating: Demanding
to Strenuous
Fond Waterfall Hike
This hike begins in the mango plantation
and leads to the 30-foot Fond Waterfall
that was literally discovered less than a
year ago, when the walking trail was being
created. It’s amazing that something so
beautiful has been seen by so few. At first
sight, it really does have “wow” factor and
you’ll find yourself hurrying down to be
able to relax and bathe in the invigorating
water. Time is allowed for people to enjoy
themselves, take some photos, shower
under the falls & explore the area.
Duration: 1-1½ hours Rating:Moderate
to strenuous
Here at Paradise magazine, we simply
can’t express enough how awesome
ATV Paradise is. It’s great fun, caters for
everyone, and will give you the authentic
St. Lucian experience you’re looking for,
combining nature with invigoration and
excitement with accomplishment for a day
you’ll never forget.

agrees with us:
“Wonderful eco tour”
“Wow, the best thing I have ever seen
and done in Saint Lucia, even after
living on the island for many years!”
“By far the best tour on the island”
“ Worth every penny”
It’s easy to remember something when it is part of your everyday life. So in this issue we
decided to get you acquainted with some of the more common birds on our beautiful island.
While relishing your vacation and fulfilling your daily regimen of fun and relaxation, it is more
than likely that you will come across these next couple of bird species in St. Lucia. Seeing
and knowing some information about them will almost certainly become one of your many
fabulous and awe-inspiring memories, lasting long after you’ve left the island.
Lesser Antillean Bullfinch (Loxigilla
noctis sclateri)
The sclateri subspecies is endemic to the island. It is considered a pest in
many local households including mine (surprisingly) due to their thieving
nature. These naughty little birds can be very audacious stealing your food
even if you’re standing just a few feet away. Sometimes they even seem
to protest in anger when you take whatever it is they’re trying to steal out
of their reach.
Habitat:
They can be found at all elevations and are frequently seen
around human habitation. They are commonly seen in kitchens, dining
rooms and eating areas, raiding open-air restaurant tables and feeding on
scraps such as bread, pastries and fruit.
Distinguishing Features: The adult can be as large as 14cm (6 in) from wing tip
to wing tip. Black in colour, you could mistake the male for a St. Lucia Black Finch if it were
not for the reddish orange throat and eyebrow markings. The female is a dark grayish brown
above, and a lighter grayish brown below.
Sounds: Its voice is a crisp trill to harsh chuk, or a thin wiry “tseep tseep” and/or lengthy
twitter.
Breeding: The breeding season is from February to August. The nest is a dome designed
with a side entrance in a dense bush or tree close to the ground, where the female lays on
average four eggs, white in colour with fine red spots all over and concentrated at the broad
end of the egg.
Cattle Egret
(Bubulcus ibis ibis)
It is the least shy, and least aquatic of the herons found on the island. It is said to be an
immigrant from the Old World believed to have arrived on its own from Africa. They roost in
large communities in mangroves, or large low lying trees which traverse a body of fresh water.
Groups usually fly in formation to and from roosting areas.
Habitat: These birds can be seen soaring through the air at different
elevations, from site to site in many different locations on the
island both forested and non-forested. They can be seen along
roadsides, near cows, in areas where there are small pools of
water and semi-aquatic vegetation, on farmlands where tractors
are ploughing or have recently ploughed, or in areas where the
grass has been freshly cut.
Paradise Saint Lucia 66
Distinguishing Features: The adult’s wingspan can be
anywhere from 48-64cm (19-25in). Mostly white in colour, but
interestingly, their features change depending on whether
they are breeding or not. During the breeding period they
have bluff plumage on the crown, breast and back and coral
pink legs. The bill is yellow at the tip, graduating through
red, to pink to a light purple at the skin surrounding the
eye, which is also a red colour. When not breeding, the bluff
plumes become less apparent, the legs are black and the
beak is yellow or black.
Feeding: They feed on mainly insects and small reptiles and move
very slowly and steadily, bobbing their head and neck from side to side as if to confuse their
prey, then suddenly and precisely plunge their head towards the prey to capture it.
Sounds: The voice is a loud, bellowing “gruuh gruuh” at medium-high pitch.
Breeding: The breeding period seems to be year round. The female builds a platform of
twigs in a tree, where it lays about three bluish-white eggs. Two popular roosting and nesting
sites are Auberge Seraphine located at Vigie and the mangroves at the western end of the
Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux Fort.
So I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little about our common bird species. Now, as one of
them fly by or stop to feed, you can bring up Saint Lucia’s avifauna and impress your friends
and family with your newfound knowledge! See you next issue for more about our birds…

– plan ahead and join a parade “band” and they’ll
help you get a costume! Music, dancing, singing and
fancy costumes come alive with a joyful, buzzing party
atmosphere… You will be ENTERTAINED!
Tell me more…
Carnival actually begins in June and runs to 19th
July, with the final prize giving in August. There are
different events throughout July such as Carnival
Queen, Calypso & Soca Monarchs, J’Ouvert,
Panorama, Junior Carnival, Ole Mas, King & Queen of
Bands, all of which are in the run up to the main event
which anybody and everybody has been waiting for
… the Pageant and Parade of the Bands held over
two days, 18-19th July 2011. Expect the world and
his wife to be out on the streets of the island’s capital,
Castries… This “sick day” has been in the diary for
months! Make sure you get there early for a spot on
the sidewalk to watch the procession.
Where to go…
The parade starts at the Choc roundabout and leads
into Castries. The judges are located outside Castries
market. From here, the procession goes around the
block, left along Jeremie Street, turning right into
Chisel St, then Micoud St, Bridge St and back onto
Jeremie St. (see Castries map - p.24). The bands can
parade the city many times before exiting via the John
Compton Highway, so a great place to get full view is
anywhere along those streets.

The Southern Caribbean record is a 940lb Blue Marlin
that was caught about a mile off Castries Harbour
Paradise Saint Lucia 70
St. Lucia has gone down in the record books as one of the greatest spots for
game fishing in the Caribbean, some might say the world, so most enthusiasts
have this extremely popular annual event in their diaries well in advance.
Giving us a taste of it, we spoke to Bruce Hackshaw from Captain
Mike's
Charters who is usually spotted either on his 38ft Bertram, Hack Attack,
or in the bar!
Paradise: So Bruce, how many years have you participated
in the Billfish Tournament?
Bruce: Oh it must be 30 years - since I was a boy.
Paradise: Wow, I didn’t realize it was that long - you must have
seen a lot! What’s the largest fish you’ve caught?
Bruce: Well my personal best was a 428lb Blue Marlin in a tournament
in Tobago, but in the St. Lucia Billfish Tournament, I caught a 408lb
about ten years ago, and the boat still holds the tournament record of
707lb in 1997.
Paradise: Those are some pretty big numbers Bruce, so what would you
say is your most exciting moment?
Bruce: Boy, that’s a hard one. I would say catching the 707lb Marlin with JeanFrancois. We never saw the fish and assumed it was a big tuna so the crew said
we were wasting our time in a billfish tournament. We nearly cut the line but
decided not to give up. The fish came up behind the boat out of the blue - we were
so excited! It was well worth the 2hrs 45 minutes it took to catch!
Paradise: So there must be celebrations at the Billfish Tournament. Tell me about the
after-parties?
Bruce: Oh there’s a lot of partying, let me tell you! Everybody gets together, goes from
boat to boat and to the bars in the marina. There’s a lot of excitement and activities…
getting totally plastered and feeling the pain but ready to go again the next morning!
Paradise: Haha - sounds lively! What advice would you give to newcomers?
Bruce: Every day is fishing day but not every day is catching day. Come with an open mind.
Everyone has the chance of catching the big one and breaking a record.
Paradise: So how can a visitor get involved in the tournament?
Bruce: You can contact Captain Mikes – we will show you the ropes. You can either join a group
or take a boat privately.
Paradise: Can you just walk along the dock at Rodney Bay Marina and get on a boat?
Bruce: Yes, you can chance it, but my advice would be to pre-book.
Paradise: Last year you sacrificed your participation to help with the Hurricane Tomas disaster…
Bruce: Yes, you know I love to fish the tournament but it was not in me to leave
t h e
people of St. Lucia who were in urgent need of supplies in the villages
down south that could only be reached by boat.
Paradise: You did a good job and the right thing, and I’m sure there
will be plenty more tournaments for you to come!
Bruce: That’s for true!
So there you have it… It can be done, and it might just be you!
Thank you Bruce, you certainly know your stuff!

St. Lucia is a diving paradise and your holiday just isn’t complete without an experience in the underwater world. Alive with tropical fish, corals and beautiful
colours, the scenery above the water is duplicated underwater with white sand,
volcanic pinnacles, sheer walls, shipwrecks and coral reefs with a multitude of
marine life… Come and see for yourself!
Be mesmerized by the natural world beneath the sea and enjoy the variety of marine plants and creatures. Drift with the fish and watch how
they spend their life in and out of corals, going where the tide takes
them, chasing their friends and pecking at the rocks for food. It’s a
peaceful life… if only our own lives were so simple!
Saint Lucia has numerous spectacular sites on the west coast for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts alike, so whether you choose to explore the depths or float on the surface, put on a mask & snorkel and
explore. St. Lucia is an advocate for
conservation and the Soufriere Marine Management Agency helps to
keep the waters pristine. If you’re diving, you need to go with an organized tour guide, but for snorkelers, choose to hire a boat, join a tour, or
in many places you can even just wade in from the shore.
Thinking about taking a dive course whilst here in St. Lucia? Here’s a little
advice:
• Choose a reputable dive operator with
PADI certifications
• Opt for an introductory dive first if you’re unsure about
doing a full course
• Be prepared. Many courses such as the PADI Open
Water have an element of theory that must be covered
before doing the practical. It is therefore a good idea to
do this online to save time in a classroom.
• Do your diving early on in your holiday – you may love
it and want to spend the rest of your holiday diving and
gaining more experience. Plus, due to the risk of decompression sickness, you should wait 24 hours before
getting on a plane.
If you’re already certified and want to join a day trip, you
may like to know where the dive boat is going before jumping
aboard. Here are a few of the top dive sites in St. Lucia, some of
which are also fantastic for snorkeling too:

For the most part, St. Lucians are a hard working, patriotic and religious nation, but they
also know how to enjoy a good party too! This becomes apparent when you come across
different personalities around the island and events throughout the year. Approximately
85% of the people who live on the island are of African descent with the remaining a mixture of British, French, European, East Indian and Carib ancestry.
The county’s heritage is French Creole, so although the official language is English, Patois
is still widely spoken amongst locals. With growing popularity of the island as a holiday
destination, tourism has now emerged as the premier industry in St Lucia. American and
European companies are investing in promoting tourism to the island to create a bright
future. Jobs in fishing and agriculture are also very apparent.
The dominant religion here is Roman Catholic (80-90%), with large, prominent churches in
each town and devoted congregations. Other religions include Seventh Day Adventists
and Pentecostals, as well as denominations of Anglican, Baptist, Jehovah’s Witness, Rastafarianism, Muslim and Hindu.
St. Lucia’s motto is “The Land, The People, The Light” which is clearly illustrated in the
national anthem, “Sons and Daughters of Saint Lucia”:
Sons and daughters of Saint Lucia,
Love the land that gave us birth,
Land of beaches, hills and valleys,
Fairest isle of all the earth.
Wheresoever you may roam,
Love, oh, love your island home.
Gone the times when nations battled
For this 'Helen of the West,
Gone the days when strife and discord
Dimmed her children's toil and rest.
Dawns at last a brighter day,
Stretches out a glad new way.
May the good Lord bless our island,
Guard her sons from woe and harm!
May our people live united,
Strong in soul and strong in arm!
Justice, Truth and Charity,
Our ideal for ever be!
Written by Charles Jesse and the music by Leton Felix Thomas,
we think you’ll agree, it is quite beautiful and summarises the island very well.
St. Lucia is noted as the friendliest nation of all the Caribbean islands,
so we hope you enjoy meeting some of the people and stop to hear their stories.

DUTY FREE Pointe Seraphine
It’s always interesting to see what a country has to offer when
shopping somewhere new. Every country has it’s own personality and it’s not
uncommon for the history and culture to be reflected in what’s available to
purchase as a souvenir. Indigenous arts and crafts are representative of the
people and locally made fabrics and clothing showcase island colours and
styles. It’s also an opportunity to buy international brand name items such as
jewellery, sunglasses, clothing and perfumes at duty free prices.
Having left friends and family at home, whilst they’re keen to
learn you had an amazing break, they’re often also just as eager
to find out you brought back for them… so this time, make it
something that’ll excite them! Selecting the right gifts can be
difficult but fortunately St. Lucia has plenty to choose from.
If you’re a shopaholic, there are malls, markets and plenty
of boutiques. You can often find what you’re looking for in a
duty free mall, but it’s also worth searching a little further to the
individual arts & crafts gift stores located around the island to
find something extra special.
There are two duty-free shopping centres in Castries, Point
Seraphine and La Place Carenage are adjacent to the cruise ship
docks. There are many stores to stroll through selling clothing,
St. Lucian rum, jewellery and perfumes as well as local fabrics
and pottery. BayWalk Mall is the newest duty free shopping
mall, only opening in August 2010. The large complex hosts
many international brand names such as MAC, Hugo Boss,
Polo and Diamond’s International as well as local boutiques, a
souvenir shop, jewellers, an M&C pharmacy, several café’s and
restaurants, a large new supermarket and St. Lucia’s first casino,
Treasure Bay.
For crafts, and if you’re only here a short time, try Castries
Market where you’ll find all sorts of St. Lucian-made trinkets
such as bowls, mats & baskets, dolls and other souvenirs. The
local spices, fruit and vegetables will also hold your interest.
Although open everyday, it’s always bustling with local activities
on a Saturday and is best to get there in the morning for the full
market experience.
Rodney Bay Marina has two excellent gift shops. One is
Drop Anchor, from the Sea Island Cotton Shop chain, and the
second is a wonderful new enterprise, Blue Fish Glass. Local
artist, Kim Hackshaw, hand paints beautiful tropical designs onto
glassware. The result is truly stunning and unique, and makes an
excellent present to yourself because you won’t want to give it
away! Homemade, fresh smelling soaps as well as clothing and
artwork can also be found in this gem of a store.
Rodney Bay’s JQ Mall is undergoing some renovations and
has some clothing boutiques, a Super J supermarket, Hallmark,
Sunshine Book Store, Subway, Burger King as well as a photo lab
and gift shops.
If you’re looking to purchase some art for the wall, consider
Caribelle Batik. They make colourful wall hangings, clothing and
Paradise Saint Lucia 78
accessories so head to Howelton House in Castries, not
only to learn and watch the process of creating batik,
but also for the breathtaking view from the house!
Just outside of Castries is the Eudovic Art Studio
that has beautiful hand crafted wooden pieces of
art on display, both for the wall and freestanding.
See the craftsmen at work and buy from the
store.
Heading south, Marigot Bay has a few stores,
some nautical fashions, local fashions, beautiful
local pottery and gifts, paint-your-own pottery
which is fun for kids, a souvenir shop and a
couple of market stalls, all in a lovely setting.
You will generally see people selling their wares
at all the hotspots. Jewellery makes a great gift and
many stall vendors will try to catch your eye. Local fruits
and vegetables are sold everywhere on the roadside, so
don’t be afraid to stop and see what delicious fresh fruit
you can pick up. You don’t have to go far outside of the tourist
areas to see the true St. Lucia and notice that tourism is the livelihood
of many locals who need your support.

Chances are you’re here for a wedding…
and if not, then you may know someone
who’s considering saying their vows in a
tropical paradise. With an endless choice
of intimate locations, it’s no surprise that
St. Lucia is still one of the top wedding and
honeymoon destinations in the world.
Wherever your perfect spot might be,
you’re sure to find a fairytale setting in
St. Lucia; on a romantic beach, next to a
cascading waterfall, in a botanical garden
or the lush green rainforest, aboard a luxury
yacht or even in the mountains, just to
name a few.
It’s a big decision to make whether to stay
at home or go away to get married. Think
about what’s important to you as a couple,
who you want to be at your wedding and
if those people would be able to make
the journey. If the idea of organizing lots
of people, the flowers, catering, drinks,
decorations, the cake, seating plans and
music, let alone finding the right venue
is all a bit too daunting, then opting for
a Caribbean wedding might just be the
answer.
There are many benefits to getting
married in St. Lucia. It can be a much
Paradise Saint Lucia 82
Paradise Saint Lucia 82
cheaper option even with a wedding
planner who will cater to your every need
and ensure that nothing gets missed such as the marriage licence, the registrar
and the marriage certificate. Wedding
coordinators take the stress out of planning
a wedding as they have the experience to
take care of all the logistical components
as well as the intricate details that make it
so special. Simplicity makes for a magical
and relaxed wedding. A flower arch or a
gazebo might be all you need when you
have a naturally stunning backdrop - no
timely decorations required! You’ll end up
with beautiful photographs and being the
envy of everyone you show them to. Lastly,
there’s no need to book more flights and
arrange a fancy honeymoon because you’re
already here! There is so much for couples
to see and do in St. Lucia, something for
everyone, whether you want adrenalin and
adventure or to just relax in the sun with
nothing but a beach chair and a cocktail.
But before you run off to the plane with
your ticket, there are a few necessary
documents you must pre-arrange and bring
with you.
See Wedding List in the WEDDING &
SPA CHOICES on next page.
Your hotel might be able to organize
most of the arrangements for you but if you
don’t yet know exactly where you want to
get married then contact a good wedding
planner and start liaising with them from
home. Paradise magazine recommends

Whoever you go with, tell them your
dreams and ideas and let them do the work

pass this on to them and you never know,
next time you’re here it might be for a
wedding!

Property Investment procedures for non-residents
With an increase in flight arrivals, rapid
economic growth and the government
encouraging visitors to the island, so too is
the popularity rising in St. Lucia for second
home buyers. St. Lucia was recently the
only island in the Caribbean ranked in the
top thirty by the World Bank as countries to
invest in. Impressive stuff!
The island is considered an excellent
location for real estate investment,
especially for those seeking rental yields
because you get the best of both worlds
– a luxurious haven to escape to when you
want, and the rental return when you can’t
be here.
Basic need-to-know costs, fees and
facts:
The buying process is relatively
straightforward for non-residents if you
follow the correct procedures. Here are a
few key things you should be aware of to
avoid any unwanted surprises:
• Firstly, choose a reputable estate agent
who is both accustomed to dealing with
international property and familiar with
the one you want to buy.
• Once you have discovered your future
home, congratulations! Now you need to
obtain an “Alien’s Land Holding” licence
which is specific to the property and is
Cotton Bay Resort
The Landings:
Mount du Cap: Jalousie Plantation:
Windjammer Landing: Paradise Saint Lucia 84
non-transferable. This process usually
takes 6 – 8 weeks. The application fee is
US $552 + the cost of the licence starting
from US $1,840 for up to an acre in size,
and more if the property is larger.
• You must employ a local solicitor to
register the Alien’s Land Holding licence
and take care of the legal obligations.
• General guidance is that closing costs
including legal fees, 2% stamp duty and
the application and licence fees are
around 5.5% of the purchase price.
• The deposit for the property is usually
10% of the
value.
Purchasing a home in the Caribbean should
be fun and exciting… just think, in a matter
of months, you could have your very own
tropical paradise to escape to when the
weather gets you down at home! Being
aware of a few basic facts and figures
means you can get on with the adventure
and actually start looking!

for real estate investors, here are just a few

The History of our island
St. Lucia…
Past to Present
What we know of St. Lucia’s history begins with the Arawak Indians
who inhabited the island in 200 AD. They were peaceful settlers who
were therefore overcome when the fierce Caribs came along in c.800
AD. It was not until about 1500 that there are records of European
explorers. The first is from a Spaniard, Juan de la Cosa, who arrived
in St. Lucia but did not attempt to colonise. He was Columbus’ navigator so it is thought that he also sailed past the island at this time
but did not land. More European presence came later in the century.
Francois Le Clerc was one of the most interesting characters. He
was a pirate who based himself at Pigeon Island and attacked passing Spanish ships. He was also known as Jambe de Bois (or Wooden
Leg), hence the rustic restaurant named after him. The Dutch arrived
c.1600 and built a fort in the south. This settlement is now known
as Vieux Fort.
It became more exciting when the Brits arrived. The first British
attempt to land was in 1605 but they were forced to flee from the
terrifying Caribs by canoe one month later. They tried to settle again
Paradise Saint Lucia 88
in 1639 but failed for the second time. Then the
French claimed ownership of St. Lucia although
did not try to colonise until 1651. By 1659, the
rivalry had risen between the French and the
English and they were extremely hostile towards
each other. Five years later, Thomas Warner
claimed St. Lucia for England. The French had
a strong base in Martinique, as did the British
in Barbados. This was the start of many battles
between the feuding countries.
St. Lucia changed hands fourteen times over a
period of 150 years, thus establishing the nickname “Helen of the West Indies”. Probably the
most memorable of all the conflicts was when
Admiral Rodney defeated the French Admiral
de Grasse in 1782. Soufriere was the first
French town in 1746 and was also the capital.
In 1765, using slave labour the European sugar
industry was developed.
The British finally won St. Lucia in 1814. Slaves
fled to remote parts of the island, many
becoming Brigands, guerrilla freedom fighters.
Emancipation came on 1st August 1838.

Four years later, English was noted as the official language. Industry was changing. Castries
became a major coaling station in 1863. Twenty
years later Indian labourers arrived to help manage the struggling agricultural industry and
many settled. By 1906 the coal industry was
beginning to decline, and later came the death
of the sugar industry in the 1960s.
As you tour the island, you will discover that
much of St. Lucia’s history is still very evident
today. Places such as Pigeon Island National
Park, Morne Fortune, Fond Doux Estate in
Soufriere and La Sikwi Sugar Mill in Anse La
Raye are great places to visit and learn more
about our history. There were many battles,
interesting characters, failures and determination all helping to shape St. Lucia into the multicultural island it is today.
St. Lucia gained independence on 22nd
February 1979 but remains within the British
Commonwealth.
Calendar of Events

St. Lucia Jazz Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the
year and 2011 marks the twentieth year of production. Held between 4th –
8th May, entertainment is island wide but the crowds are drawn to the main

Not just jazz music, a variety of genres are represented, such as R&B, steel
drums, Latin and reggae.
The Festival of Comedy is organized by the St Lucia National Trust

August
The Rose Festival or Feast of St. Rose de Lima is a flower festival

dinner and plenty of dancing.

(Jounen Kweyol). Traditional food, exhibitions and folklore are
enjoyed. The entire month is packed with cultural activities and
excitement. Oktoberfest En Kweyol is a one-day event with live
music, traditional costumes and dancing, local cuisines and world
beers on sale.
Rivalling the Rose Festival, La Marguerite is held on
17th and honours the purple daisy-like flower. After a religious service,
there are dances and songs sung in French Creole. It similarly has a ‘king”
and “queen” and well dressed people for dinner and dancing.
St. Lucia International Bill Fish Tournament is an
extremely popular game fishing tournament hosted by IGY Rodney
Bay Marina with many entries from all over the Caribbean hoping to
catch the one that got away.
November
The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) begins in Las Palmas in
Grand Canaria, with the finish line being in Rodney Bay. Approximately 250 boats
are expected to enter this exciting transatlantic passage. Yachts arrive in Rodney Bay up until
Christmas for celebrations and tales of adventure.
December
Festival of Lights is held on 12th December. Activities include lantern-making competitions and
decorating towns and villages with lights.
