FORMALITIES
Travel and customs formalities
Visa requirements
Countries whose citizens may enter Serbia without a visa or without a passport
(but with an ID card) are defined by international treaties or by decision of the
Government of the Republic of Serbia.
A foreigner who does not require
a visa or travel document to enter
Serbia may stay for a maximum of
90 days over a period of six
months from the day of the first
entry.
Since June 2010, citizens of EU member
countries, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland
may enter the Republic of Serbia using their
identity cards and stay in Serbia for up to 90
days.
Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa to enter Serbia:
1. For all types of passport, up to 90 days: Andorra, Argentina, Australia,
Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada,
Chile, Croatia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia,
Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland,
Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia,
Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal,
Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, the Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Tunisia, United States of America,
Vatican City.
2. For diplomatic and official passports, as well as ordinary passports with the
“on business…” clause: Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, Georgia, Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russian Federation,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine.
3. Only with diplomatic or official passports: Ecuador, Guinea, Pakistan, Peru
and Turkey.
4. Only with diplomatic passports: Egypt.
5. Only with ordinary passports: Mexico.
Foreign nationals visiting Serbia who are required to obtain visas at the
diplomatic or consular mission of the Serbia need:

Customs
Visitors are allowed to bring into Serbia items of personal luggage and
prescription medication (in a quantity required to continue treatment for the
duration of stay), as well as up to one bottle of perfume, one bottle of toilet
water, one liter of spirits, 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco,
without declaring it to customs authorities.
There is no limit on the amount of currency you are allowed to bring into
Serbia, but if you are traveling with €10.000 or more (or equivalent in other
currencies) you are required to declare that you are transiting with a given
amount in order to avoid complications when leaving Serbia.
Health insurance
Serbia has a number of bilateral agreements with national health insurance funds
of other countries which entitle their users/nationals to free health care in
Serbia under specified circumstances. You should check with your local health
care provider if you are eligible and how you can obtain the required documents
before departure. This may end up being a complicated procedure, so for a
short stay, purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance with coverage for
Serbia might be a better alternative. Having health/travel insurance for Serbia is
not a formal entry requirement, but is highly recommended, as for any other
country.

Getting here and around
Transport to RT-RK
Once you land at Belgrade airport and leave the plane you will show your
passport to security officials on a ground floor and then head to baggage claim
in basement to pick up the luggage that you checked-in at your departure.
Screens above carousel will show your flight number that your luggage will be
on. After you have collected your luggage you will head through customs and
out into the arrivals hall (Terminal T2 – International arrivals).

products or artificial flavorings, and the portions tend to be large. Most meals
are prepared with a considerable amount of meat, and served with a variety of
vegetables. “Home-cooked” meals tend to be spicier.
Serbian
Plava frajla. Vojvodinian restaurant “Plava Frajla” is
one of the leading restaurants with traditional cuisine in
the city of Novi Sad and it's surroundings. In their
menu you can find many cold and hot dishes from
traditional cuisine, dishes that are made on charcoal
grill, dishes made under “sach”, always warm breads
and rolls from their bakery that is under the same roof as the restaurant, as well
as many sweet dishes, cakes and pastries.
Žal za mladost. Opened in 1995, it represents the
time from the end of the 19th and beginning of the
20th century. The collection of the Serbian folk
costumes and hand-made objects, which the visitors
can see in the restaurant, illustrates in the most
beautiful way Serbian cultural heritage from the

Sokače. Situaded in the very center of Novi Sad. In
Sokače the classic Serbian dishes are prepared
according to recipes Nikolić family from Zaječar.
Catering is a family tradition for more of 100 years.
There are grilled meat, kebabs, burgers variety, donuts,
sausages, various snacks of grilled chicken, smoked
ham, white pork, chitterlings, care. Dishes are cooked in earthenware pots
and there is a variety of fresh salads which even today are prepared in the area
and other parts of Serbia.
Čarde
No trip to Novi Sad is complete without eating at one of the so-called Čarda
fish restaurants located along the banks of Danube.
Aqua Doria. Excellent location (against the backdrop
of Petrovaradin Fortress, next to the bridge) and good
food made this floating restaurant very popular. The
speciality of the house is fish stew. Menu includes
freshwater fish prepared in variety of ways, grilled
meat, and some unusual specialties for this part of the
Danube, such as carp on forks and fish “perkelt” made of catfish without
bones. The interior is decorated in simple and rustic, real country style, and
there is an inviting summer terrace with a protective roof on the shore.
Chinese
Dva štapića. A small and simply decorated restaurant
featuring Chinese fast food. It is interesting because it
offers some dishes that are not usually found on the
menus of Chinese restaurants in Europe and because
you can watch Chinese cooks prepare your meal. A
menu is consisted of chicken, pork and veal prepared with peanuts, bamboo
and Chinese mushrooms in oyster, curry and hot Sichuan sauce, etc. They also

aforementioned period. The affable staff will warmly welcome you at the
entrance to the restaurant dressed in Serbian folk costumes and, traditionally,
you will be offered salt and bread. Savour in the national grilled dishes and old
Serbian meals made of diverse sorts of meat and prepared in a traditional way
in earthware dishes.

Sečuan. The oldest Chinese restaurant in our country.
It has been nourishing the tradition of professional and
affable service for years. In an authentic Chinese
ambience, the specialties of Chinese cuisine are served,
at the first place, the dishes that are characteristic for
the Chinese province of Sichuan. These dishes are
made of vegetables, pork, chicken and rice and they are abundant in hot spices.
They offer a great variety of soups and warm hors-d’oeuvre. There are also the
dishes made of fresh fish and vegetarian menu.
Italian
Pasha. A hidden place where you can have a good
meal, surrounded with a huge park and with a view of
the tennis courts. The exceptional dishes of Italian
cuisine and a pleasant atmosphere are the main reasons
why this restaurant is always crowded. The gnocchi and
pastas are all made in-house, and pizza is baked in a
wood-fired oven. Polite waiters and a wide range of beverages and wines from
all over the world characterize this restaurant. Restaurant provides table d’hôte
and a vegetarian menu, wine list and a variety of Cuban cigars. The reservations
are obligatory.
International
Chicken Tikka. Restaurant with a long tradition of
quality, tasty, original and diverse cuisine. It is located
below the north side of the town stadium and
specializing, as may be gathered from its name, in
chicken dishes. In addition to the chicken, you can
have dishes prepared with other kinds of meat, pastas,
fish, and various salads, with wide variety of Istrian wines offered by Terra
Divine.
There are many restaurants in Novi Sad that serve traditional
cuisine, international Italian specialties, Chinese food, fish and
vegetarian food. The average price for a meal per person is €5 to
€10. Local beer costs around one€, imported beer is €1.5 to €2.5, a
cup of espresso coffee costs from €0.8 to €1.2 and juices are
around one€. Pack of Cigarettes is from one€ to €1.7.

Don’t miss in Novi Sad
Essentials
Old town and city centre
All roads lead to the city center, where the wide pedestrian zone offers
something for everyone. The heart of the old town features almost all must-see
attractions in Novi Sad. Traditional pastry and ice-cream shops should be one
of your first stops. The Liberty Square has been the stage for most significant
events, whether cultural or political. It is also the usual rendezvous point and
the man place for feeding fat pigeons. The square is dominated by two
buildings facing one another: City Hall and the Name of Mary Roman Catholic
Church known as the Cathedral. A monument to Svetozar Miletić, Novi Sad
mayor and a champion of political rights of the Serbs in the 19th century
occupies the centre of the square.

stretches to Zmaj Jovina Street, the main

promenade and the commercial centre of
the town. The street is lined with numerous open-terrace cafés and pastry
shops. The street ends with the building of the Bishop’s Palace, with the
Cathedral Church right behind. The corner of Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska
streets is the location of the oldest preserved house in Novi Sad (1720) known
as “At the White Lion’s”, which nowadays houses the Irish Pub.
Dunavska street, also packed with shops and cafés, leads towards the Danube
Park and the Danube river. At the beginning of the street, you can see one of
the pockmarks on the town face - the cannon ball which remained buried in
the building exterior walls (where it landed during the 1849 shelling of the
town).

The Danube Park. The main town park and the loveliest. Once there was a fen
overgrown with reeds on its site, which was developed into a park in 1895.
Today there is a smallish lake in the heart of the park, which has a tiny island
in its middle and ducks and swans are gliding in the lake. The park boasts over
250 species of plants, numerous sculptures, and part of it is turned into a kids
playground.
Petrovaradin Fortress
Built in the present form more than three centuries ago, it represents one of
the largest monuments and fortress on the Danube, and at the same time, the
biggest preserved fortress in Europe. A walk around the Fortress is something
that should not be missed: the numerous galleries and museums, the
unforgettable view of Novi Sad, the Danube, Fruška Gora and the Pannonian
Plain; the hidden underground passageways and of course the wonderful
restaurants. The erstwhile barracks and underground passages are nowadays
converted into the premises of the Museum of the City and
numerous art ateliers, galleries, and artisan workshops. The
terrace of the fortress, by the Clock Tower, boasts splendid
views of the town. The clock on the Tower is unique in that the
big hand tells hours and the small one minutes. This was
allegedly done so that the boatmen travelling on the Danube
could see the time from a long distance.
Historic Churches
The Cathedral Orthodox Church of Saint George
(Saborna). The Saborna Church was built in the baroque
style in 1734. Heavily damaged in the 1849 shelling, it was
renovated in 1880. The beautiful iconostasis was done by
famous Serbian painter Paja Jovanović. The cross in the
churchyard is the oldest preserved monument in Novi

The Name of Mary Parish Church – The Cathedral, A
Roman Catholic Church built in 1895 in the neo-gothic
style on the foundation of an old Roman Catholic church.
It has stained-glass windows and the altar made of carved
wood from Tyrol. The church sometimes schedules
concerts on the organs. Trg Slobode.
Synagogue. This impressive building in the style of
Hungarian secession was completed in 1909. As the
Jewish community no longer could support the costs of maintenance, in 1991 it
was leased to the city for a period of twenty five years. Taking advantage of the
fine acoustics of the synagogue building, the city,
having restored the interior, decided to use it as
a concert hall for classic and other music events.
The Jewish community, nevertheless, is able use
the synagogue whenever it wishes, as they do
each year, for celebrating major Jewish holidays.
Jevrejska 11.
Museums
The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection. The legacy of Pavle Beljanski, a
diplomat and art collector. The collection features paintings by finest Serbian
artists of the first half of the 20th century (including Nadežda Petrović, Sava
Šumanović and Petar Laburda) as well as sculptures, drawings and tapestries.

Museum of Vojvodina. A permanent display of archeological, historical and
ethnographic artifacts relevant to Vojvodina, dating from Paleolithic to the
middle of the 20th century. Three helmets from late Antique (Roman period)
are very impressive. These priceless helmets are considered to be made in IV
century. Dunavska 35-37; open: 09:00-17:00; closed: Mon; admission 100 dinars.
Out of Town
Fruška Gora Mountain & Monasteries. Fruška Gora Mountain stretches
over the southern border of the Panonia plain. It’s highest peak is “Crveni čot”
at 539 m. This is a natural habitat of rare animals and herbs, a large part of it
was declared National park in 1960. The Fruška Gora slopes have well suited
for grapes and there are many wine makers. The best sorts of wines are

Riesling, Traminer and Bermet. Fruška Gora is close to Novi Sad (20 minutes
drive), but far enough so visitors can enjoy and rest in the beautiful
surroundings.
The hospitable environment of Fruška Gora made possible 35 Serbian

quarters, farm buildings and cultivable soil are a part of a monastery complex.
Most of the monasteries were ravaged and looted during the 2nd World War
and they enjoy UNESCO protection.
Sremski Karlovci. The small town on the
Danube bank, located in the vicinity of
Novi Sad, just 11 km from the city center.
For over 200 years, the town has been the
spiritual center of Serbian people and as
such flourished with monumental buildings
of great importance and cultural heritage.
You will experience the St. Nicolas Church (1762), famous for its twin towers
and iconoclast, it represents a magnificent piece of baroque architecture. A 15minute walk from the center of town is the first ever roundtable room in
history that was set up in the Chapel of Peace. The Grammar School, dating
back to the 18th century, is the first ever high school in Serbia. Numerous wine
cellars complete the picture of a magic town. Taste the locally produced
authentic liqueur wine “bermet” and you will not be disappointed. It is
rumored to have been enjoyed by those on the Titanic. But be careful, if you
drink the water from the central fountain Four Lions, you will come back again
and get married in Sremski Karlovci (or at least that is what the legend says).

Shopping & entertainment
All different kinds of merchandise and goods are available in stores and
markets around Novi Sad. The starting point for your shopping should be the
Liberty Square. Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska streets are famous for café bars,
restaurants, craft shops, bookshops as well as for the latest fashion and design
stores. Don’t miss the famous bar street, Laze Telečkog Street: it has the touch
of Spain and its southern “movida”.
Traditionally tolerant and hospitable, the citizens of Novi Sad adore to
entertain, have fun, and meet new people. The relaxed and peaceful
atmosphere is one of the essential elements that you will feel in Novi Sad. In
addition, Novi Sad is recognized as a city of great fun, where everyone will find
something to enjoy, from jazz sounds, over rock gigs, local tambourine music
to mainstream house music clubs.
Being a pedestrian-friendly city, it will be easy for you to find your way around
the city.

Mobile telephone services
There are three mobile operators in Serbia:
Telekom Srbija MTS – with 064, 065 and 066 prefixes
Telenor – with 062, 063 and 069 prefixes
VIP Mobile – with 060 and 061 prefixes
Pre-paid packages and recharge cards for all three operators are available at
their retail shops, every tobacco and newspapers shop.
Internet
All hotels in the city offer Internet to their guests. Novi Sad has a growing
number of cafes with free wireless Internet access.

NOTE: The national Internet domain of the Republic of Serbia is .rs. Until
recently, the domain of the former Yugoslavia .yu was still in use, and links
with that extension are still common on the Internet, despite being obsolete. If
you click on a .yu link that will not work try the address again with .rs.
Banks and money
The official currency of Serbia is the Serbian dinar (ISO code RSD; locally
abbreviated as DIN) which is made up of 100 para. Paper notes in
denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 dinars, and
coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 dinars are in circulation. There are
no para denominations in circulation. When paying in cash, all prices are
rounded to whole dinars. If paying with a credit/debit card, the exact amount
will be charged (no rounding).
Dinar is the only legal tender in Serbia. Exchange offices routinely accept
Euros, U.S. dollars and pounds sterling. If exchanging U.S. dollars, you might
be required to present a valid form of ID and the procedure may take longer as
note serial numbers are recorded. There are no such formalities when

exchanging other currencies. Banks also perform currency exchange, but
almost always at less favorable exchange rates than small exchange offices.

Most banks in Serbia are open
from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm and from 8:00 am to 3:00
pm on Saturdays. On Sundays there is usually a designated bank or post office
that maintains needed services.
The most commonly accepted cards are Visa, Visa Electron, Master and
Maestro. Diners and American Express are less prevalent. Credit cards are
widely accepted in hotels, shops and restaurants, but rarely used in bakeries,
fast food outlets and tobacco stores, and never in farmers’ markets so it’s good
to have some cash handy, if shopping at these. ATMs can be found on every
corner.

Traffic regulations
In Serbia, the traffic regulations are generally in line with those of member
states of the European Union. The speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h,
unless due to road conditions, traffic signs indicate a speed limit of up to 80
km/h. Speed limits on roads outside populated areas are:
120 km/h on motorways,
100 km/h on major roads,
80 km/h on other roads.
A driver may not operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol (more
than 0.30 mg/ml).
When stopped by the police, the driver and any passengers are not allowed to
exit their vehicle unless given permission to do so by a police officer.
Wearing seat belts is compulsory for drivers and front seat passengers, as well
as passengers in the back if there are seat belts.
Dipped headlights must be switched on when driving in the daytime.
Drivers may not use telephones or other communications devices while driving
unless using a hands-free kit.

Mandatory equipment to be kept in passenger vehicles are: spare tire,

Parking
Novi Sad is divided into 2 parking zones – red and
blue. In red zone maximum parking time is 120
minutes and the price is €0.45 per started hour. In
blue zone there is no maximum parking time, and the
price is €0.35 per started hour. Parking is paid from
07:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, and from 07:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays. On
Sundays and public holidays parking is free.
You can pay parking in three ways:
 Parking Card – price is €0.40 per started hour, sold on kiosks,
 Parking Machines,
 SMS – car registration number (without any space) should be sent on: 8211
for Red Zone and 8212 for Blue Zone.

services for a very reasonable price.
The average starting fee is €1 and
each consecutive kilometer is €0.35.
Make sure that the meter is on and
pay the amount that you see on the
display (the minimum fee for one ride
is €1). Please note that the above
prices apply to registered cabs, and it
is highly recommended that registered
cabs are used – unregistered taxis are
far more expensive.
Safety and security
You are advised to take normal, sensible precautions to avoid mugging, bagsnatching and pick-pocketing. Please be particularly careful on busy public
transport, in train stations, markets and other places frequented by tourists.

Novi Sad climate is moderate continental, with four seasons. Autumn is
longer than spring, with longer sunny and warm periods, where temperatures
vary from 18°C to 24°C (64 F to 75 F). Winter is not so severe, with an average
