March 2009 shag rag - Northern Virginia Shag Club
Shag Rag
March 2009 Vol. XV, No 3
Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Marcia Conway
The Northern Virginia Shag Club had two fun events in February. The first
one was the Super Bowl Party where everyone enjoyed dancing, watching
the game and tasting all the desserts prepared by all the great cooks in the
club.
Marcia
The biggest event was the annual Charlie and Jackie workshop and dance on Saturday,
February 14. The dance workshops taught the members many new fun shag steps, style and
techniques. The dance exhibition by Charlie and Jackie was — as always — entertaining and
superb! Great music was provided by the guest DJ, Billy Waldrep. The social committee
under the leadership of Chris Werner, Cris Gaines and Vernon Bruffey deserve special
thanks for organizing the food and decorating the tables. Our thanks go to Tom Brett for
making all the necessary arrangements with Ft. Myer. I would like to thank David and Jerry
Rodgers again for being such wonderful hosts to Charlie and Jackie and for organizing all the
private lessons. Our thanks go to Cathy Metcalf and the dance committee for taking care of
registration at the workshops. Barry Newman was responsible for the publicity of the event.
The 50/50 tickets were sold by the entertaining team of the two Frans. A Big Thanks to all
the NVSC shaggers who brought the delicious goodies, helped put up and take down the
tables and chairs, and for the warm fellowship enjoyed by all.
In March we will have the annual Shag-a-Thon at Springfield Mall on Saturday, March 21 to
raise money for our club charity, Capital Hospice. Please see Jo-Ann Hitzemann and Pamela
Alfonso for your Shag-a-Thon packet. NVSC has raised over $169,000 since the first Shag-aThon and we hope to make total amount $180,000+ this year. More information about this
event is contained in the flyer in this newsletter.
On Wednesday, April 8 we will have the annual Easter Bonnet or Easter Hat contest. Prizes
will be awarded to the most original, the cutest and the funniest looking bonnet or hat. We will
also have the egg dancing contest which everyone enjoys and is so much fun.
Mark your calendar for Spring SOS, April 17-26 at N. Myrtle Beach and for our SOS party
which will be held on Friday, April 24 at Fat Harold’s.

Shag Rag
The Shag Rag is looking for more input from the NVSC membership! All NVSC
members are encouraged to provide articles and shag stories to the Shag Rag! Our
readers would love to hear about things such as:
1.
2.
3.
4.
"My First Time at SOS"
"What it's like to Compete"
"Shag Competitions. When and where?"
Stories about our club, or the club's history
We welcome stories from the Juniors, too! Your stories encourage others to dance! They
let folks know how much fun Shag is! Please send your Shag Rag input to Maryann
Lesnick at [email protected]. The deadline is the 25th of every month. The Shag
Rag website is: nvshag.org/newsletter.htm.
Lost-and-Found
Chris Werner has an aqua/black insulated bag that was left at Ft. Myer. You can call Chris
at 703-278-1073 to retrieve.
Inclement Weather Policy
When there is inclement weather please listen to the radio or television for school closings and
evening cancellations and if Fairfax County has canceled school activities then the NVSC dance
at Rene's will also be cancelled. If there are questions, call Marcia Conway at 703-361-8159.
"The Internal Revenue Service notified NVSC on
April 19, 1999, that we have been accepted as a nonprofit social club exempted from paying Federal income taxes. Anyone interested in reviewing NVSC's
application and supporting documents provided to
IRS, the IRS exemption letter, or the club's annual
Form 990 to the IRS, please contact the club Treasurer."
Board meetings are held each month and are open to any and all
members who wish to attend. Unless put on the agenda, attendance
is for observation, not participation. Since board meetings, at this
time, are at board members’ homes, please alert the secretary, one
week in advance, if you are interested in attending in case we need
a larger facility. Copies of Board meeting minutes are available to
members upon request from the secretary and posted on the
nvshag.org website.

News and Announcements, cont’d
A Big Thank You from the Social Committee!
On behalf of the Social Committee, I would like to thank everyone who was so kind to help
with the set-up for the Jackie and Charlie dance on February 14th. Since this was only the
second event I have attended at Ft. Myer with NVSG, I was concerned with finishing the setup before people started to arrive. Sue and Paul Young started working as soon as they
unloaded their car. Ann Thompson and Jean Jennings helped with the table decorations. Ann
didn't even take off her coat! Kathy Miller and Barry Newman helped with some of the
finishing touches.
I would also like to thank the volunteers who worked at the door/welcome desk: Andie and
Jerry Crews, Kathy Miller and Barry Newman, Hilda and Victor Clemann, Jo-Ann Hitzemann
and Mark Hendrickson. Nancy Cox didn't officially volunteer but she kept the food table wellstocked. Every time I went to check, Nancy had beat me to the task. Tom Brett kept me
informed on the status of the food table as well as the clean-up. Tom also went to the shopette
for missed supplies. And of course, a big thank you to everyone who brought food and to
everyone who was kind enough to set up the tables and chairs after the last workshop and to
take them down after the dance. I changed my shoes and when I looked up, almost all the
tables were down and the chairs stacked. I was amazed at how fast that happened!
Thanks again! — Chris Werner
Shag-a-Thon
On March 21, 2009, members of Northern Virginia Shag Club will showcase our dance,
Carolina Shag, at Springfield Mall, Center Court from noon until 4:00 in support of
Capital Hospice. NVSC adopted Hospice of Northern Virginia (now known as “Capital
Hospice”) as its official club charity in 1997. Capital Hospice provides expert care, comfort
and support for individuals and families facing terminal illnesses. It is a charitable
organization, which turns no one away for inability to pay for care. After a couple years of
modest fundraising, NVSC hit upon the idea of holding one major annual fundraiser for
Capital Hospice: the Shag-a-Thon! NVSC is very proud of the fact that we have raised more
than $169,000 to benefit Capital Hospice. So, come on out, join the fun and let’s each do our
part in making this year another banner year for our fundraising! If you would like to raise
funds, please see Pamela Alfano or Jo-Ann Hitzemann for information. If you can’t
participate, please consider a donation to Capital Hospice through one of the dancers, who has
volunteered to raise funds and dance in support of Hospice. Thanks and see you in Center
Court.
