Project Review
Phase One
UWC Dilijan College
opened September 2014
Dear Friends,
This very year has been the most important and muchanticipated one in the history of the new international school in Armenia since the project was started in 2006. The Dream
has come true – UWC Dilijan College has opened its doors for the first students in September 2014. The school has seen
tremendous activity in preparation for the opening. It has been a most exciting period for us, witnessing the fruits of almost
ten years’ work.
The highlights of 2013/14 include:
• The school has become a full member of the United World Colleges network and has been accredited to deliver IB
Diploma Programme.
• An engaged teaching and support staff from 11 countries was selected by John Puddefoot, the Founding Head of UWC
Dilijan.
• Admission of students to UWC Dilijan was conducted, in accordance with UWC procedures, through national
committees. 96 students from 50 countries have been accepted to the school based on their merits.
• The Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees put in place all the necessary mechanisms for the school to operate
according to the international best practices.
• The Great Steward of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust chaired by HRH The Prince of Wales and Scholae Mundi, a
UK-based charity supporting UWC Dilijan and other educational projects, have established a partnership. About 50
students from UWC Dilijan each calendar year for 10 years will participate in special educational courses offered by
Dumfries House. One of the wings of Dumfries House, which was restored with support from Scholae Mundi, was
given the name “Dilijan” to symbolise the partnership and its rooms will be used by UWC Dilijan students when they
visit.
• First phase of the school construction has been completed with the generous support of the Founding Patrons of the
school.
• With the support of an international group of donors we secured US$ 4.75 million for two-year scholarships for
students and for operating expenses.
• The President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan awarded Order of Honor to Gagik Adibekyan for the implementation of
charity programmes in Armenia and for his considerable contribution to the construction of UWC Dilijan College.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped us make the Dream of the first international
school in Armenia a reality.
Builders, engineers, architects, designers and many other people were working very hard to see the project through. We
hope that you will be very pleased with the quality of staff and students who were selected under the leadership of John
Puddefoot. We have every confidence that John will make the school a jewel in the UWC network and one of the best
international schools in the world.
Our most heartfelt thanks are to those who put their trust in us and joined us by contributing to the project generously.
We hope that this is the beginning of your lifelong relationship with UWC Dilijan.
Warm regards,
Veronika Zonabend and Ruben Vardanyan

partnership in Dumfries House with HRH The Prince of Wales on 2 May 2014.
26 international students from 15 countries and 20
local children ages 15-17 took part in UWC Short Course
in Dilijan in July 2014 and had a chance to learn about
Armenian culture and people.
Armenian students who were accepted to UWC and
their families joined supporters and friends at a special
celebration on 1 June 2014 to mark International
Children’s Day.
In July 2014 the first board meeting of the Board of
Governors and the Board of Trustees took place at UWC
Dilijan as the school construction was coming to an end.
They were able to see tremendous scope of the site and
cutting-edge design.
96 students from 50 countries arrived in August 2014 to
start their studies at UWC Dilijan.
Ronald and Helen Freeman generously provided support
for scholarships for 10 students.
