Garry Kasparov on Modern Chess Part One: Revolution in the 70s
This book, the first in a brand new series which
follows on from the My Great Predecessors series,
sees chess legend Garry Kasparov reflecting on a
pivotal time in chess history. Bobby Fischer’s spurt
towards the chess summit (1970-1972) marked
the approach of a new era, affecting all aspects of
the game, and opening theory in particular. Fischer
demonstrated the need for deep preparation with
both colours, expanded the range of openings
studied and laid the basis of present-day
professional chess. He became the first real chess
professional in the West.
The leader of the new generation, Anatoly Karpov,
fully reaped the fruits of the Fischer revolution and
mastered the lessons of his great predecessor.
Of the players of the older generation, only Victor
Korchnoi was able to achieve such a high level of
professionalism.
Alas, Fischer left the chess stage. But the tectonic
shifts caused by him led to the start of a genuine
revolution in opening theory, which overturned
many traditional impressions about various typical
positions. Between 1972 and 1975 alone, progress
in the field of opening theory was more significant
than in the entire preceding decade! Under the
influence of Fischer, who imparted a great impetus
to the development of the game, chess was
radically regenerated. This process, with increasing
acceleration, also continued in later years. As a
result, the overall picture in the openings changed
almost beyond recognition.
By studying this fascinating book, the reader will
certainly learn a great deal, discover things that
are unexpected, and see how rapidly and inexorably
chess development approached the computer era.

Vishy Anand with Devangshu Datta
To the millions of chess fans around the world,
Vishy Anand needs no introduction. A hero in his
own country, he has been one of the strongest
Grandmasters in the world for many years and has
spearheaded a chess revolution in India, inspiring an
entire generation of young, talented Indians to excel in
the game. As well as his multitude of successes over
the board, his attractive style, modest manner and
warm personality mark him out as a favourite player
of countless chess enthusiasts.
My Life in Chess is the incredible story of a young
boy who, through great emotional intelligence and
immense natural talent, overcame the drawbacks of
growing up in a region that lacked tradition, coaches,
tournaments and financial support to become a
legend in the game. Anand speaks of his life at the
top of one of the world’s most exacting sports: his
early days in competitive chess, his personal and
professional motivators, and insights into the state
of chess today. His family and friends provide further
fascinating insights, and the book also includes
his recollections of his best games and his most

instruct and entertain every true chess devotee.
¢ The real story behind Vishy Anand
¢ Contains a feast of attacking chess
¢ Ideal for chess players of all levels
¢ Analysis of several of his best games
Vishy Anand first took the chess world by storm as a
young teenager who became famous for beating very
strong players with a phenomenal speed of thought
and lightning quick moves. As his play matured he
quickly established himself as one of the world’s elite
players, winning numerous major competitions. He
was the official World Championship challenger in
both 1995 and 1997, while in 2000 he delighted his
fans by winning the FIDE World Championship. Since
then he has continued to excel and few, if any, can
match his tournament performances over recent years.
Vishy Anand has written this book in collaboration
with Devangshu Datta, a journalist from New Delhi
who has a passion for chess and has closely followed
Anand’s continued progress over the years.
Dangerous Weapons is a brand-new series of opening books which supply the reader with an abundance of hard-hitting ideas to
revitalize his or her opening repertoire. Many of the carefully chosen weapons are innovative, visually shocking, incredibly tricky,
or have been unfairly discarded; they are guaranteed to throw even your most experienced opponent off balance.
In these initial books, renowned chess theoreticians pick out three of the most important openings and examine them in a
revolutionary way, concentrating on original or little-explored variations and selecting a wealth of options for both White and
Black. A study of these books will leave the reader confident and fully-armed, and his or her opponents running for cover!

In the first two books of his celebrated Fire on Board series,
Shirov traced his progress at the top of the chess world and
presented a delightful selection of his most unforgettable
games. Now, for the first time, Shirov discloses the secrets of
his high-level opening preparation in this computer-dominated
era and the stories behind his most famous opening novelties.
This book focuses on 1 e4 e5 (open and semi-open games),
while the next volume will cover all other openings. Fire on
Board Part III also includes some previously unseen curiosities
of Shirov’s chess life, analysis and games.
