Activity Report 2013
Mishkenot Sha'ananim Cultural Center in Jerusalem
The Mishkenot Sha'ananim Cultural Center is one of Jerusalem's most active and
high caliber institutions, uniquely positioned in the picturesque and historically
significant Mishkenot Sha'ananim neighborhood across from Old City walls. The
center was founded by the Jerusalem Foundation in 1973 as part of efforts to
restore and renovate the Mishkenot Sha'ananim and Yemin Moshe
neighborhoods and continues to be one of the Foundation's flagship projects.
The Mishkenot Mishkenot Sha'ananim Cultural Center consists of a thriving
programming department, the Konrad Adenaur Conference Center, the Dwek
Gallery, a guesthouse for artists and scholars and the Jerusalem Center for Ethics.
Housed in a combination of new buildings and buildings from over 150 years
ago, Mishkenot is a center for Israeli and international culture that contributes to
the global cultural discourse by merging a universal worldview with the unique
cultural inspiration of Jerusalem and Israel.
Set in the heart of Jerusalem – a multifaceted yet complex city that serves as a
meeting point for diverse religions and sects – Mishkenot Sha'ananim offers a
refreshing openness that permeates the center and informs its day to day
activities. Those who spend time at the center, whether at the guesthouse or at
one of numerous activities or conventions, take its unique energy with them to
their daily lives in Jerusalem, Israel and abroad. The center seeks to initiate and
host diverse activities with a new and refreshing approach, serving as an
incubator for international cultural programs and providing a dynamic creative
space for Israeli and international artists.
Vision:
Mishkenot Sha'ananim draws its inspiration from the synthesis of the physical
and spiritual that Jerusalem symbolizes to the world. The center draws on
Israel's deep cultural roots to host and initiate an array of meaningful and
creative events that capture the nation's innovative energy and unique heritage.
Mission:
Mishkenot's mission is to shape and influence the contours of the global village
through unique Israeli and Jewish perspectives. Mishkenot focuses on key issues
of the day utilizing an interdisciplinary blend of arts, sciences and digital
technology to encourage discourse, understanding and international dialogue. Its
guest house, facilities and superb location enable creative forces and leaders to
meet, engage and interact with a wide spectrum of Israeli audiences. Mishkenot
believes that the surfacing of ideas through public programming can lead to
change and results that will have a long lasting influence on our world.

Mishkenot Sha'ananim in 2013
Mishkenot Sha'ananim hosted
hundreds of high-profile and more
intimate events in 2013, including
conferences, seminars and
exhibitions for some 10,000 people.
Events took place at the Konrad
Adenauer Conference Center, which
offers specialized facilities suited to
different types of events. They were
also conducted on its La Terraza de
los Reyes de España (Kings of Spain
Square) atop Mishkenot Sha'ananim,
dedicated in honor of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia in May 2010. The
Jerusalem Center for Ethics began each of its seminars at La Terraza de los Reyes
de España, where participants learnt about the multiple historical sites that are
visible from there and discussed them in the context of ethical dilemmas.
Mishkenot Sha'ananim Appoints New Director General
In 2013, Moti Schwartz was appointed as Director General of Mishkenot
Sha'ananim. Mr. Schwartz previously served as Deputy Director of the Beit
Hatfutsot Museum. He was also the founder and CEO of YNET, the online outlet
for the Yedioth Ahronot newspaper and also served in senior positions at
Pelephone and the Jerusalem Post. Upon being appointed, Mr. Schwartz
expressed enthusiasm about working closely with the Jerusalem Foundation to
position Mishkenot Sha'ananim as one of Jerusalem's, and Israel's, leading
cultural centers.
The Mishkenot Sha'ananim Programming Department
The Mishkenot Sha'ananim Programming Department produces numerous
cultural events each year, including international conferences and festivals,
youth activities, music concerts, book launches, writing workshops and
encounters with leading artists and researchers from Israel and abroad. Events
attract diverse audiences and introduce them to a wide range of cultural
experiences in different fields, including literature, art, history, architecture and
music. The following are some highlights from 2013:
Kisufim - The Jerusalem Conference of Jewish Writers and Poets
Kisufim was inaugurated in 2007, providing a platform for Jewish writers and
poets from Israel and around the world to share their work with peers and
members of the public. Kisufim enhances the public's exposure to Jewish
literature and facilitates an international exchange of ideas spanning the broad
3
spectrum of Jewish literature. Themed “Language and Memory”, the 3-day
conference conducted in February 2013 was comprised of poetry and prose
readings, workshops for students, researchers, writers and translators and
various panel discussions. Forty Israeli and international writers and poets took
part in the conference, alongside an audience of almost one thousand individuals.
Bubble Youth Culture Series
Established in 2012, Bubble is a youth culture and arts series designed to
cultivate early habits in
cultural engagement and
make culture accessible to
youth throughout
Jerusalem ages 15-17. The
project is run jointly by the
Jerusalem Foundation and
the Mishkenot Sha'ananim
Programming Department.
Bubble consists of a series
of cultural events
conducted every few weeks
at leading Jerusalem
cultural institutions, such
as the Jerusalem
Cinematheque, the Yellow Submarine, the Khan Theater and more. This
subsidized series was created in response to identified economic and social
barriers to cultural engagement among Jerusalem youth. Those barriers are
characterized by a lack of exposure to the arts within the home setting, limited
school budgets allocated to cultural activities, lack of familiarity with Jerusalem
cultural venues, negative attitudes among youth toward the arts, high costs and a
preference among teenagers to participate in more youth-oriented activities
such as street parties, musical events and the like. In 2013, Bubble held its
second season as well as the first two events of the third season. Eleven events
were held in total, which were attended by more than 2,000 youth.
Nitzozot [Sparks] Arts and Science
Series
Nitzozot, a seven part public series
of panels and lectures in November,
featured talks by leading
intellectuals in science and the arts,
providing opportunities for dialogue
and making science and the arts
accessible to an audience of nearly
900 people. Among the esteemed
speakers were a number of Nobel
4
and Israel prize winners, including: Nobel laureate in chemistry Prof. Aaron
Ciechanover; Nobel laureate in economics Prof. Israel Uman; Israel Prize
recipient in computer sciences David Harel and a broad range of scientists,
musicians, writers, comic and visual artists, chefs and archeologists.
International guests included Jorge Cham, a cartoonist and roboticist residing in
the United States and Prof. Carl Djerassi, an American-Austrian chemist.
Convention: Moses Montefiore - The
Man Behind The Windmill
The Mishkenot Sha'ananim Cultural
Center is committed to celebrating
Jerusalem's inimitable mosaic of people
and cultures. Held each year, the
Mediterranean Cultures Convention
explores Jerusalem’s different cultural
influences and presents the tastes,
sounds, smells, literature and
philosophy emanating from the region,
facilitating mutual cultural
understandings while stripping away
cultural barriers.
A walking tour in the footsteps of Sir Moses
Montefiore
The 2013 convention, entitled "Moses
Montefiore: The Man Behind the
Windmill," explored the life of Sir Moses Montefiore, who founded Mishkenot
Sha'ananim in 1860, showing him to be an
inspiring role model for present-day Israel.
The three day conference comprised of
lectures, tours, wine tastings, Ladino music
and children's activities and featured a
range of local and international
personalities such as Adam Montefiore,
descendant of Moses Montefiore and wine
development director of Carmel Winery,
Member of Knesset Dr. Aliza Lavie and leading academics such as Prof. James
Kugel and Prof. Israel Bartal. Rabbi Dr. Abraham Levy OBE served as the
conference convener.
The Jerusalem Cultural Fellowship and the Teddy Kollek Program for
Visiting Artists and Academics
Run by the Mishkenot Programming Department, the Jerusalem Cultural
Fellowship invites international artists and academics to Mishkenot – generally
for a month long visit – where they are exposed to the best of Israeli art, meet
with key personalities within the Israeli art scene, mingle with fellow artists, visit
cultural sites and institutions and establish relationships that can potentially
5
serve as a basis for future collaboration. The guest artist or academic participates
in guided tours and delivers master classes at Jerusalem schools of higher
education and at seminars open to the wider public.
The Teddy Kollek Program is a scholarship, awarded within the context of the
broader Cultural Fellowship, which is granted to a leading Austrian artist or
academic and provides them with a month-long residence at Mishkenot. The
program is run with the assistance of the Austrian Federal Ministry for
Education, Arts and Culture. The 2013 scholarship was awarded to Leopold
Kessler, a visual artist born in Munich residing and working in Vienna. Kessler is
a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and Vienna. His works, which
focus on public space and urban topography, have been exhibited in galleries
around the world. During his visit in February-March, Kessler met with the
founders of the School of Visual Theater and visited the Artists' Studios, the
Israel museum and other Jerusalem cultural institutions. He also gave seminars
at the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design and the Museum on the Seam.

ethics in the fields of public service, education, medicine, psychology, business
law, military, media and the environment. In 2013, some 3,500 individuals took
part in activities at the center, including ethics training, conferences and
seminars. The following is a summary of activities.

The Mishkenot Sha'ananim Guesthouse for Visiting Artists and
Scholars
The Mishkenot Guesthouse, housed in an impressive historic building that
embodies both simplicity and elegance, hosts leading intellectuals and artists,
giving them the opportunity to experience Jerusalem from a picturesque and
pastoral setting. The Guesthouse provides a serene atmosphere that inspires
creativity. Guests participate in the cultural and intellectual life of Mishkenot as
well as Jerusalem festivals, symposiums and other events. In 2013, leading
academics, artists, musicians and writers from over 20 countries stayed at the
Guesthouse, many of whom represent leading institutions around the world.
The Dwek Gallery
The Dwek Gallery, situated within the Konrad Adenauer Conference Center at
Mishkenot, is a non-profit art venue. The gallery exhibits works by contemporary
Israeli artists. Exhibitions often coincide with various cultural and historical
conferences that are held at Mishkenot Sha'ananim.
In 2013, the Dwek Gallery held four main exhibits, each of which were
accompanied by an opening night event, a gallery talk and advertising in the
Haaretz newspaper and Achbar Ha'ir (City Mouse), a Jerusalem-based
entertainment and leisure magazine. In 2013, Raz Samira, a curator at the Tel
Aviv Museum of Art, joined the Dwek Gallery curatorial team.
The following exhibitions were held at the Dwek Gallery in 2013:
Shlomo Serry: Feel at Home
January-March 2013
For several years, Shlomo Serry wandered around the country and almost
obsessively photographed landscapes on the verge of extinction that have
become part of the dense contemporary urban
environment. The exhibition consisted of photographs
ranging from small portraits to large panorama shots
that emphasize the drama and tension between the
landscape that existed for many years – and which is
likely to disappear in years to come – and the
developing urban landscape, which consists of towers,
machinery, empty playgrounds and skeletons of
buildings. Through photography infused with a
sarcastic humor and political commentary, Serry raises questions about
environmental sustainability in the face of rapid urbanization process.
8
Serry was born in Israel and is the son of the late photographer David Serry. He
is a Hebrew University mathematics graduate and studied photography and film
at the Camera Obscura School for the Arts in Tel Aviv, Beit Zvi in Ramat Gan and
Beit Berl College. His work was shown in a solo exhibition at the Jerusalem
Artists House and in numerous group exhibitions across the country. His book,
David Serry Photographs 1930-1950, completed his father's photography
exhibits.
Hadar Gad-Two Years
March-September
Hadar Gad infuses the canvas with her love of landscapes, connection to the
pioneering spirit and personal memories. In her work, nature is an entity in
constant development and transformation – either a place of life, death, ongoing
history or an emotional or spiritual idea or space. Gad portrays valleys as they
are seen from the hills surrounding the kibbutz where she was born, as well as
the orchards around her current place of residence, Pardes Hanna. Gad's works
are intricately detailed, made up of different shades, which each have their own
significance and presence.
Her oil paintings, whether panoramic and large scale projects or smaller
paintings, are products of many hours of contemplation and work. Gad focuses
on above and below ground landscapes and covers the paintings in paint, slowly
reducing the color to convey a third dimension and a sense of depth and
protrusion, giving them a life of their own.
Gad studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design and is a graduate of the Avni
Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière
in Paris. She has exhibited her works in numerous solo and group exhibitions in
Israel and abroad, including the Museum of Art in Ein Harod, the Rothschild
Gallery in Tel Aviv and prestigious institutionsin France, Poland and the United
States.
9
Jonathan Hirschfeld: On the Land
August-October
In this exhibition, Jonathan Hirschfeld presents a series entitled "On the Land,"
which added a new dimension to the range of Israeli artworks associated with
members of Kibbutz Tzuba, among them Joseph Zaritsky and Larry Abramson.
The series consists of a group of paintings on newspaper catalogues which draw
inspiration from and relate directly to, the works of Joseph Zaritsky and Larry
Abramson.
Hirschfeld holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Bezalel Academy of
Arts & Design and a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Tel Aviv University.
10
Hila Karabelnikov-Paz: Surfaces
October 2013-January 2014
Hila Karabelnikov-Paz’s solo exhibition focuses on Israeli landscapes. Her
paintings consist of countless pieces of masking tape and wallpaper,
characterized by bright and intense colors. The series includes a sunset at the
Sheraton beach, an old plastic pool that has been discarded in a rundown area,
paths with wild plants, cypress trees and chimneys in Hadera. These are neither
realistic nor illustrative, rather have a strong emotional nature, laden with
personal symbolism. The exhibit took place as part of Manofim, a city-wide series
that marks the beginning of the Jerusalem art season. The paintings were taken
down for a brief period half way through the exhibit in place of an exhibition that
accompanied the Moses Montefiore conference.
Karabelnikov-Paz holds a Master's Degree from the Bezalel Academy of Arts &
Design.

The Jerusalem Press Club
Thanks to the support of the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Jerusalem Press Club
(JPC) officially opened in June
2013 and has since become a
focal point for local and foreign
journalists working in Israel
and for visiting journalists. The
JPC provides journalists with
opportunities to meet with the
movers and shakers of Israeli
politics and society, giving
them access to ministers,
diplomats, ambassadors and
high level officials. The JPC
currently has 258 members,
including members of the
JPC Opening, June 2013
foreign, Israeli and visiting
press.
In 2013, The JPC organized press conferences and briefings twice weekly, as well
as seminars, workshops and tours. Highlights included briefings with outgoing
Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer, former Head of Israeli Military
Intelligence, Amos Yadlin, Israeli politician and diplomat Danny Ayalon, Israeli
statesman and scholar Dr. Yossi Beilin, peace activist and POW-release
negotiator Gershon Baskin and Palestinian journalist and politician Ziad
AbuZayyad. JPC's restaurant, Touro, has been open to the public since the
launch and has served as a meeting spot for journalists. It has already received
rave reviews by the Jerusalem Post, the Forward and Hebrew-language
newspapers.
In 2013, eight Journalism students from the University of Miami participated in a
month-long program with the JPC in association with the Daniel Pearl Institute of
Journalism at IDC Herzliya. In addition, JPC, Mishkenot Sha'ananim and the Israel
Academy of Sciences and Humanities partnered to offer a science communication
mission, the first of many planned missions for overseas journalists. Over the
course of a week, a group of senior science editors and journalists from around
the world were given an insider's look into the Israeli science industry, where
they learned about Israel's scientific achievements and were introduced to top
scientists and researchers, including a number of Israeli Nobel Prize laureates.
