Annual Report - Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation
Celebrating
Canada’s Voice For Bone And Joint Health
Years
Message from the President and Chair, Dr. Geoffrey Johnston
In the past fifty years, the Canadian
Orthopaedic Foundation has invested
close to $1 million in research and
helped tens of thousands of Canadians
through their orthopaedic journey.
Since its inception in 1965, our charity, the
Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation, has had
to respond to an ever-evolving environment, transforming from a small
orthopaedic research organization into a national fundraising body with a
primary focus on patient education. In 2014 the Foundation has further
matured, and gained capacity, to take on a significantly larger role in
supporting orthopaedic research and orthopaedic community innovation.
This renewed overt commitment to our surgeons remains balanced by
our sustained focus on patient education via our educational library which
provides trustworthy and surgeon-approved resources to the public. As
hospital stays shorten, and healthcare becomes increasingly complex,
patients continue to ask for information that will help them prepare for
their orthopaedic surgical experience.
Donor and corporate support has continued to generate hope in 2014
by making it possible to launch a new smoking cessation program – we
all know the impact of smoking on surgical outcomes – and to further
reach patients with the Ortho Connect Peer Support Program. Funding
was also invested into the expansion of our resource library to incorporate
a new hip fracture booklet and a hip replacement booklet designed to
help Canadians understand their surgery and recovery.
We are all keenly aware of the burden of musculoskeletal treatment and
the rising need for orthopaedic surgery. Orthopaedics has to take advantage of the rapidly changing technology and healthcare environments,
which drive innovation. Innovation only comes from bright ideas which,
with financial support, can translate to the bedside – many of our ideas
die on the vine for lack of funding. Provincial and national government
funding for research has become increasingly scarce and difficult to access.
Nevertheless we cannot afford to let our good ideas go to waste. We
have recently heard of Toronto orthopaedic surgeons committing
substantial amounts of their own earnings (e.g. $125,000 each) to a
research fund, to address this serious research funding gap. We at the
Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation want to expand our research grant
portfolio so that together we can kindle the research and innovation ideas
that are needed – to make the difference we so want, to improve the way
we practice, and to improve our patients’ surgical outcomes.
Of course, none of our accomplishments would be possible without
volunteers. Our organization’s life-blood is our wonderful volunteers and
their dedication and steadfast commitment. Critically important, volunteers
help us through peer support and fundraising, and assist in delivering our
mission nationally.
As we embark on our 50th year of service, our Foundation has developed
an ambitious strategy to provide researchers and innovators the means to
find new ways to treat Canadians and to fund community-based programs
that support patients and their caregivers. The Foundation will also help
Canadians understand how to maintain life-long bone and joint health.
We continue to be true to our mission, to achieve excellence in bone
and joint health, mobility and function for all Canadians through the
advancement of research, education, and care.
The Foundation is determined to support your good ideas, the many
opportunities enabled by scientific discovery. More than ever we need to
reach out to our donors amongst the public and surgical communities,
appealing to their generosity to fuel these initiatives.
Thank you for your continued support, particularly as we celebrate our
50th anniversary.
Four Strategic Priorities
Patient
Education
Surgeon
Support
Health
Policy
Build
Capacity
Be the organization of
choice for patient information;
improve outcomes for surgical
patients; support non-surgical
patients with information
and advice; and educate
the public on disease
prevention.
Fund strategically
important research by
orthopaedic surgeons;
support continuing education
and innovation; and
improve the efficiency
and effectiveness of
clinical practice.
Build public awareness
of the impact bone and
joint conditions have on
society; opportunities for
prevention, self-management,
patient education; and
opportunities for service
improvements.
Continuously improve
funding, partnerships,
community and volunteer
networks, processes,
people and technologies
to effectively
deliver services.
Our Vision:
We are Canada’s patient voice for bone and joint health.
Our Mission:
To achieve excellence in bone and joint health, mobility and
function for all Canadians through the advancement of
research, education, and care.
Making a Difference
As a national charity, we are committed to investing into local communities across
the country. We do this by providing hospital grants that help to improve patient
care, by funding local researchers and by delivering free patient resources to
surgeons and healthcare facilities nationally.
Below are just some of the ways we have helped to improve the lives of people
over the years:
• Funded close to $1 million in research grants
• Funded approximately $10 million in community grants in more than 61
regions across the country
• Provided surgeons and hospitals with patient booklets reaching more than
200,000 Canadians
• Offered peer support to many of the tens of thousands of people on the wait
list for surgery
In 2014, we served almost 300,000 Canadians,
hospitals and orthopaedic professionals nationally.

Celebrating
Years
Here is what patients have been telling us about our Ortho Connect peer support program:
“
It was very helpful to speak with
someone that had a similar experience.
It helped me to deal with the apprehension.
“
Speaking to the volunteer answered
my questions and put me at ease over
the anxiety of the upcoming surgery.
”
“
”
“
I am so glad to find out about this
program from the doctor's office. The
brochure is definitely informative and
useful. Thanks again for your personnel
in the office to connect me with the kind
lady. The volunteer provided me with
a lot of good experiences.
”
”
“
Thanks for this wonderful service.
It really helps with the fear of the unknown.
Now I feel more prepared.
“
Ortho Connect is an excellent
program and was very helpful
and answered many questions.
”
”
“
The program provided me with much comfort
and optimism regarding my future surgery,
recovery period and ultimate total recovery
and future. I went into the surgery with
complete peace of mind.
“
It made a big difference for me
talking to a volunteer. I did not
feel so isolated.
”
“
The volunteer was very well matched with me
(age, work, etc). She is a very pleasant lady, patient
and with a lot of empathy. Certainly, she helped
minimize the pre-op panic. Thank you.
”
Excellent program – please continue. My volunteer
was so friendly and positive and caring!
”
Ortho Connect is a free,
telephone-based peer
support program through
which people newly
referred for bone and
joint surgery are matched
with trained volunteers
who have already
undergone similar
surgical treatment.
Patients connect with
volunteers to learn a
real-world patient view
of what to expect from
their treatment. Ortho
Connect helps patients
to feel confident and
informed through
providing an experienced,
understanding ear.

Surgeons and community citizens from across the nation celebrated the gift of mobility by participating in the 2014 annual Sherry
Bassin Bad to the Bone Charity Golf Classic in support of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation. It was a day filled with
philanthropy, fun, food, and entertainment as players hit the links at the beautiful Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario.
The day was hosted by Sherry Bassin, an orthopaedic patient himself. Celebrated in the NHL, Bassin has led the Canadian World
Junior Team to two gold medals, was the Assistant General Manager of the Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche),
and served as a color commentator for CBC Sports in the late 1980's for their World Junior Championship coverage.
The event featured NHL guests and offered every participant an opportunity to golf with an NHL VIP guest. Proceeds from the event
are invested into research funding and the Ortho Connect peer support program.
