Whatcha Doing?
Yum!
Written by You Moonjo, Illustrated by Choi Mino
‘Whatcha Doing?’ is a book that can stimulate a mother’s interest as well as that of small,
curious children. As readers turn the page, they see a bear doing something, but exactly
what remains a mystery until they turn to the next page, which shows what it is actually
doing. Another page shows a monkey doing something, but, again, readers won’t know
what it is until the next page. In its format, this book throws to the reader a series of
questions and answers involving an elephant, puppy, porcupine, and baby, in turn. The
illustration work is very well done and realistic, which inspires the interest of toddlers.
Use of repeated words and pictures makes this book well suited for the targeted readers.
Written and Illustrated by Moon Seung-Yeoun
“Baby, baby, my little baby, what shall we eat?” Just one look at the pretty and appetizing
fruit in this book is enough to captivate
any child. Flip the page to discover new
fruit and the scrumptious yum, smack,
and crunch noises that go with them.
This is an adorable illustrated book that
combines text, motherly affection,
mouthwatering pictures, and delicious
sounds.

I’m Hungry

The parrot sits tiredly on his perch. The fish isn’t swimming around. The puppy doesn’t
wag his tail. The baby is crying. Why? They are all hungry. The baby is drinking milk. The
puppy, fish and parrot are eating too. Once the baby is full, he smiles broadly.
I’m Hungry is a picture book for babies that contrasts being hungry and eating,
representing the satisfaction of fulfilling this most basic, instinctive desire. The book is
largely organized into two sections of being hungry and eating. The
static images of the former and the active scenes of the latter
are juxtaposed to express the pleasure of eating. Smallsized illustrations are added on the
left side in the eating section to
highlight the expectation of and
pleasure of eating. The bright,
vivid colors and simple, clear
actions effectively juxtapose the
contrasting conditions.

Jump!
Written and Illustrated by Kwak Sang-ju
A grasshopper jumps onto a rock. A frog jumps onto the grasshopper. A cat jumps
onto the frog, and an elephant jumps onto the cat. Say “Jump!” and the animals
spring into the air. The small, weak grasshopper valorously jumping with all the
animals on its back is wondrous and amusing for children.

Teeter Totter Toddler
Written and Illustrated by Kwon Sawoo
This book shows many body plays for toddlers. If you say “Clap! Clap!”, a seal and child
clap their hands, and you say “Raise your hands and say Hurrah!”, then a cat and baby
raise hands straight up. While watching babies and animals who clap their hands, crawl,
roll over and shake, a mother and child can follow naturally.
Body play is helpful for physical growth and emotional satisfaction. If a mother and father
can join with a child, the satisfaction of the child will be much better. While you are
reading this book showing various body plays, shake your body with your child. Be
pleasant and encourage the growth of your child.
This book is about a toddler who has just begun to take his first steps. He looks just like
our own toddlers, with his clenched fists and a posture that is not leaning bodyyet firmly
upright. This illustrated book captures the delight of our toddlers seeing, listening,
touching, and experiencing the world during their first stroll.

The Lion With a Red Hair-Band
Written and Illustrated by Nam Joo Hyeon
Rainbow
Written and Illustrated by Moon Seung-Yeoun
One day, a lion who was taking a stroll, finds a red ribbon. “Wow, so pretty, it would look so
nice in my hair,” he thought. The lion pulled hard to take it off the tree, but it wouldn’t
budge. He tried to bite it off, but it couldn’t be cut. An elephant tried to help by pulling it
with her trunk and a stag tried to help by cutting it with its horn, but nothing seemed to
work. The disappointed lion finally burst into tears. Through the story of the lion and his red
ribbon, readers will learn that possession of material goods will not necessarily bring
happiness. It’s a story with a happy ending and full of pleasant pictures that will put a smile
on anyone’s face.
Everything in the world has its own distinct color, but it does not always look the same all
the time. At night, when there is no light, all the colors stay hidden, and when the morning
sun appears, the colors awaken one by one to fill the entire world. The simple, lyrical text
and vivid images introduce children to the world of colors.

Patterns Coming to Life
The Strawberry Plant
Written by You Moonjo, Illustrated by Ahn Yun-mo
Written and Illustrated by Jeong Yu Jung
The patterns of this book lead toward images of real things. Through an
open window, breeze comes in and touches the flower prints on the
wallpaper. Voila! The flowers one by one come to life! The scent of the
flowers call butterflies. The breeze then caresses the grass on which the
butterflies had rested, and suddenly zebras rush forth showing off their
beautiful stripes. Now, a pattern of wavy lines.... what would come from
this? A school of fish, of course! Kids will find this book so much fun as
they engage in the game of image association.
6
A single strawberry plant is growing behind a pebble wall. A thin stem crawls
tentatively over the wall. A child is waiting for the strawberries to grow. The
strawberry plant that shows its vitality by crossing the barrier is just like the
child who grows day by day. The writing and delicate illustrations convey the
child’s feelings while studying the plant.

using clay, the author creates both a threedimensional effect, as well as a twodimensional effect of paintings. Through experiments over a decade, he has come
up with synthetic clay, the perfect material for him. With delicate expressions, the
three-dimensional effect, and the colors, have been enhanced.

Don’t Cry Baby
My guitar
Written by Ho-sun Oh, Illustrated by Rew Seung Ha
Written and Illustrated Min Jeoung-young
Everytime the baby wakes up and cries, one by one the animals do their
best to make the baby smile. Try to guess which animal will come next
to cheer up the baby, as you read along. This will encourage children to
use their imaginations.
The words that various animals use, some repetitive, some new, will
naturally allow children to learn as they read along.
Her dad thinks she’s too little to play the guitar but it is the perfect friend for a little
girl. She reads books to her precious guitar and invites it over to her imaginary hair
salon for a makeover. When she takes a walk, the guitar goes with her. The little girl
dreams of the day when she can sing a beautiful song with her guitar. My Guitar
breathes life into an object and turns it into the protagonist’s best friend; a little game
children like to play. This fantasy book sees the guitar from the child’s prospective.
Before it landed in the child’s hands, the guitar was just an instrument, but the book
turns it into the little girl’s best friend.

Hello, Moon Bunny
Written and Illustrated by Moon Seung-Yeoun
Gift from the Moon Rabbit
Written and Illustrated by Moon Seung-Yeoun
Do you remember who told you there’s a bunny on the moon, grinding rice flour to make
rice cake under the laurel tree? It’s a story that everyone in East Asia has heard of. The tale
of a bunny that lives on the bright moon in the dark sky is an especially delightful one for
children. It is possible that children imagine becoming friends with the moon bunny,
particularly when they are playing games imagination with their peers. Hello, Moon
Bunny is a familiar story based on a traditional Korean folk tale but with a twist in time
and space that is told in an original and imaginative way. Hun is a boy from Earth who
becomes friends with the moon bunny, mouse, snake, turtle, and bear who live up in the
heavens. Please do not worry that the sky is too far away. All one has to do is, say hello,
take off your shoes, and then climb up the tree. The sky is a majestic place where you will
get to see the Milky Way and where the stars are singing with beautiful voices. It is there
that Hun makes new friends and spends an enjoyable time with them.
title : 안녕, 달토끼야
November 20, 2011 | 28pages | 236x278㎜
| Ages 2 and up | Hardcover
Using the sky as a setting, Hello, Moon Bunny turns the exciting experience of making
new friends into an even more special event. Children’s hearts will be filled with much joy
and excitement when they read about the idea of running around in the vast sky with your
friends, the sound of milling rice for flour to make rice cakes, and the music of the stars.
In order to show a freer and more dreamlike world, Mun Seung-Yeon, the author, chose a
lithographic form. On a flat surface, like stone or metal, a drawing is done with a brush or
crayon after which it is coated with color—for a softer and warmer feel and look. When
the water and oil get accidentally mixed in the process of printing, spots can occur, not to
mention the blurring of color and shapes. Thanks to this natural but chance effect, the
world in which the moon bunny and his friends live turned out to be a more mystical and
pleasing place.
The second story from the Moon Rabbit and Friends series. In the prequel Hello, Moon
Rabbit, Hoon went up into the sky and became friends with Moon Rabbit, Mouse, Snake,
Turtle, and Bear by sharing rice cake with them. At the end, Moon Rabbit gave rice cake
to everyone. Gift from Moon Rabbit starts here. As the gifts pile up, there is no choice
but to have a party at Hoon’s house. The lithographic style seen in the previous book
unveils an ever more inviting and fantastic world.

Written by Ma, Hae-Song, Illustrated by Jeong Yu Jung
The Kind Yellow Bull
Written by Kwon Jeong-saeng, Illustrated by Jeong Seung-gak
It was the night of the full moon, when the moon sprinkled silver dusts on all things. A
Bull as huge as a mountain finds a mouse as tiny as a pea. The Mouse was out looking for
food to give to its brothers and sisters.
The Bull having a heart of gold, gave all his leftovers to the mouse, and took care of the
poor mice that had lost their mother. The Bull and the mice became one big happy family
and lived in harmony all winter long. This heart-warming story tells us that size and looks
don’t matter when it comes to caring for others.
Why is it that the color of the sea shines more clearly and brightly when it’s deeper?
They say it’s because of the little star that once lost its shine and is now shining at the
bottom of the ocean. Join in and listen to this story about love and friendship between
the wildflower and little star traveling the heaven and the sea back and forth. After
reading this story, you will be left with deep emotions and heart-aching feelings. The
blue colors of the sea and traditional Korean patterned drawings describe the love
between the two friends splendidly, giving a mystical atmosphere of the setting of the
story.

Eating Stories is the seventh installment of Jiwon and Byungkwan, an
ongoing series of children’s books first published in 2006. Focusing on
the everyday lives of older sister Jiwon and younger brother Byungkwan,
the series gained an enthusiastic following with young readers.
Author Ko Dae-young and illustrator Kim Young-jin team up again with
this book, their realistic writing and whimsical illustrations crafting a tale
close to the hearts of children. Such is the popularity of the series, which
has sold approximately 300,000 copies up to date, one volume of the
series entitled Nail Biting was included in Korean elementary school
textbooks. Eating Stories, as the titles suggests, focuses on the eating
habits of Jiwon and Byungkwan. In the story the family shares food
together and spends a happy day much like any other. A closer look,
however, reveals that plenty of whining, cajoling, and imaginative ruses
goes on on the part of both the children and the parents, like in any other
family. Illustrator Kim Young-jin once more depicts Jiwon and
Byungkwan as a relatable, instantly identifiable duo.
The illustrator has also taken great pains with the pictures of food, the
other protagonists of the story. The readers will pore over illustrations of
pizza straight out of the box, vegetables and snacks from the grocery
store, and other food items that family members crave. The illustrator’s
signature ‘treasure hunt’ of hiding small items in the illustrations, always
eagerly anticipated by young readers, is another bonus of following this
series.

This is Ko and Kim’s sixth collaboration. Their books have won over the
hearts of young readers with stories that they can relate to. The two have
worked on a series with the siblings Ji-won and Byeong-gwan as the
main characters, expressing in a memorable way the sense of
achievement, anxiety, competitiveness the two youths feel in the process
of growing up.
Ji-won and Byeong-gwan do whatever their hearts desire while the adults
are gone. Even when mom is back, Byeong-gwan is busy playing with his
blocks. He stays focused on his blocks instead of cleaning up like he
ought to. When his mom tells him off, he disappears out the door with his
block building set. He finishes making the pirate ship like he wanted to
but his happiness is soon overpowered by a sense of anxiety. He
reluctantly returns home but soon forgets everything in front of a warm
meal. The young readers will feel a relief when they learn Byeong-gwan
went back home safely.
The illustrator depicts every little toy scattered about the house. Every
small detail of the picture book is interesting because not a single detail
has been left out. Those who open this book will be immediately
delighted by its bright and vibrant pictures.

This is a different story about a bride in a shell told by the mother of the
writer. The best known story about a bride in a shell is like that; a young man

However, in this book, the young man made a mistake, and takes the bride

Once upon a time there was a group of rabbits that lived in the hills. Every
day they crept into Mr. Red Bean’s garden and ate his red beans. Mr. Red
Bean would love to catch the culprits but he cannot. One day he has a bright
idea: to make himself up like a corpse and play dead. The rabbits are fooled
and are busy covering Mr. Red Bean with flowers when he surprises them all
and captures them. The rabbits are much too clever, however, to stay caught.
A merry chase between Mr. Red Bean and the rabbits ensues.
This book adapts the tale of “Mr. Green Bean” or “Mr. Red Bean” in Korean
folklore for children. The essential elements of the story are accompanied with
illustrations of the rabbits depicted as mischievous children. Their appearance
is based on the wild Korean rabbit, with short ears and dark fur; the artist also
highlights their impish, playful nature. The rabbits thus pictured as playful
children not only function as relatable protagonists for young readers but also
add humor and liveliness to the story.

Gabdol and His Six Brave Friends is a story about six little things—a beetle, a chestnut, a softshelled turtle, a rice scoop, cattle dung, and millstone—defeating a formidable tiger.
The story can be divided into two parts—the early part in which Gabdol gets his six friends on his
horse, and the later part in which together, they defeat the tiger. The book starts out with the
phrase, “Gabdol was on his horse . . .” and then changes to “Gabdol and the beetle were on the
horse when . . .” after the beetle gets on the horse. It becomes longer as each of the six friends
mount the horse. As it does, it takes on a cheerful rhythm, just like the steps of the horse carrying
the six friends. The later part is full of tension and speed as the six friends work hand in hand to
teach the tiger a lesson.
When it comes to the illustrations, the early pages give off a cheerful,
humorous feeling, with bright colors and the horse’s expression as it takes a
look at each of the six friends; the later pages creates an urgent, energetic
feeling through the sparkling eyes and vigorous spirit of the six friends.
In the early pages, the text is separated from the illustration, which
makes the pages appear as a stage for a play divided into first and
second acts. In the later pages, the stage is expanded with the
illustrations taking up the entire pages, so that the six friends may
move about freely.

Crab and Monkey are hungry for red bean rice cake. They rush to the rice cake shop,
where they find a fresh and steaming rice cake. Monkey puts on his thinking cap and
devises a way to get it. The plan succeeds, but before Crab can get a bite, Monkey
climbs up a tree and eats the rice cake all by himself. But a sudden gust of wind causes
Monkey to drop the rice cake, so Crab grabs it and scurries away into his hole. This
time, Monkey has nothing to eat. What do you think he did? He pooped in front of
Crab’s hole. Infuriated, Crab pinched Monkey’s butt, and all of his hair fell off!
This story explains why some monkeys have bare

of inquisitive
children.

I Love My Big Sister tells the story of a boy and his older sister, who sometimes quarrel
but are always glad that they have each other.
The protagonist is a little boy who is happiest when spending time with his older sister.
When asked by adults, “Who do you like best, your Mommy or your Daddy?” he always
answers that he likes his big sister best. In kindergarten, he draws a picture of his older
sister as his favorite person in the world. Two years his senior, his sister reads to him,
teaches him games, and is always happy to play with him. The younger brother, in turn,
happily tags around her all the time. Just the thought of being separated from her is
enough to give him nightmares. His sister, however, is growing older and needs more
space and time to herself. The younger brother gradually comes to understand that
growing up does not mean growing apart, but that it is possible to gain more
independence while staying close to each other.
Illustrator Han Sang-un uses watercolor, gouache, pen, pencil, and oil pastel to depict a
playful relationship between brother and sister. His lighthearted style is evident in the use
of speech bubbles and exaggeration of the expressions and gestures of his characters. The
combination of the exaggerated, vibrant style with the simple, down-to-earth text proves
to be a winner, making I Love My Big Sister a highly memorable read.

This book is about the clothes that children wear throughout the 12 months of
the year and the stories that go with them. The clothes themselves are those of
the author’s relatives and the neighborhood’s children. Each has its own story,
from underwear to play clothes, going-out clothes, clothes for special holidays,
clothes that are made over, inherited or passed on…
‘Mommy, I Like These Clothes’ shows how children grow as they change from
one outfit to another.
All the clothes in the book are well loved and appreciated, taken care of by
owners who also demonstrate how friends, family, and neighbors care for
each other.
The author draws on sunji, a kind of paper used in Korean painting, with a
special kind of watercolor to show every pattern and fold of the clothing
to its greatest detail. She also takes care that all of the clothing and colors
complement each other. Her enjoyment at collecting clothes and writing
and drawing stories about them, aided by memories of her childhood, is clear in
every aspect of the book.

hers. One day, home alone, she holds a fashion show in mom’s room, which ends with a
terrible accident! She tears mom’s beautiful red dress, and falls into panic. But then comes
grandma, who solves the problem brilliantly!
A barley field was a playground where children were busy playing
hide and seek, finding eggs of pheasants and chasing the chicks.
In the field you could taste the fresh sprouts and baked ears of
barleys. It was not only family’s important workplace but also a
cozy and quiet place for a little boy to enjoy his own time.
As well as it shows the memories of grown-ups, the story suggests
the author’s wish that children will feel close
to nature.

Songi the First Grader
Written and Illustrated by Ghang Young Sook
Tools at Work
Written and Illustrated by Kwon Yoon-duck
Songi cringes whenever anybody says, “You’re not a child anymore,” but gets angry when
others say, “You are too young to do it.” Unpredictable and imaginative, Songi is an ordinary
Korean first grader. This book contains five stories from 6-year-old Songi’s daily life. In Shhh,
That’s my Treasure, Mom calls Songi’s collection a pile of junk and tries to throw it away. But
by evading Mom’s demands a little, she manages to secure her treasure. In Night Poop, Songi
goes poop outside at night by herself. At an age when fear and the imagination cause the
unknown to grow wild, Songi overcomes her fear, growing in both courage and height. The Pain
Machine is about Songi’s friends who complain that she doesn’t play with them, even though
she is sick. Songi imagines a machine that makes her friends share her pain. Readers will smile
with each new charming episode.
‘Tools at Work’ is an illustrated book that depicts how our neighbors work
and live together in harmony. The book’s story begins with a girl set to go
and look around her town with her cat. The first scene depicts tools that
densely fill the workplace, and the second scene shows how people work
with their tools – all to help children understand the use of tools. Also, kids
will naturally learn that all work is equally valuable as they see Kwon’s fine
illustrations of a farm, a hospital, a shoe factory, a dressmaker’s shop, a
Chinese restaurant, a carpenter’s shop, and an art studio.

The Crocodile Bags Return to the Jungle
Written and Illustrated by Lee Suzy
Written by Kim Jin-Kyung, Illustrated by Yun Bongsun
The Crocodile Bags Return to the Jungle is a children’s illustrated book written by
Kim Jin-Kyung, who is well known both in Korea and abroad for the Cat School
Series. Composed of three sections and 11 volumes, Cat School was Korea’s first
fantasy serialized story for children and is highly appraised by critics and the public.
Section one was awarded the Le Prix des Incorruptibles, a French young adult literary
award selected directly by 140,000 young readers.
The Crocodile Bags Return to the Jungle features the life story of two crocodile bags
on display in a store window and a grandfather crocodile who lived long ago. It
recounts how man’s greed has mistreated nature and life. Rather than reprimanding
man for his selfishness or crying out with clichéd slogans about preserving nature,
writer Kim captures an interesting story with this book. Illustrator Yun portrays a dark,
heavy topic with pleasant, vibrant watercolor illustrations. The warm, gentle
illustrations capture the details of each and every monkey in the jungle.
At the first scene, a sad girl is looking straight ahead.
She can see a quarrel between her mom and dad through the
opened door.
Since she cannot understand the situation, she became sad. At the
last scene, the same girl is also looking straight ahead. However, the
face is totally different this time. As if she experienced tremendous and
excited thing, she looks happy. What happened to her?

The Story of My Friend the Tree
Written and Illustrated by Kang Kyung-sun
title : 나무 친구 이야기
July 5, 2012 | 32pages | 204x300㎜
| Ages 6 and up | Hardcover
Each snapshot of memory contains a large tree. Though it can’t move or speak, it always stands
firm in the same spot. “I”, the protagonist, has fun times playing and running around the tree. The
tree, familiar and comforting, is part of the family’s everyday life as they go about working in the
field and going to the market. The tree becomes a natural part of the family as they spend many
years together. The book starts out by depicting episodes in which they were together, and ends
by how the family comes to lose the tree and what effect the loss has on them. Deep in sorrow,
“I” can’t bear to see the tree being cut down, or say goodbye. When something precious is lost,
you feel helpless. A new year comes around, spring dawns, and “I” can finally see the world from
the tree’s perspective. “I” bids the tree friend farewell, with a name he’ll remember always in his
heart. Having overcome his sorrow and confusion, he has learned to let go. Just as the mothers
and fathers who read this book once did, children have something or someone they feel
especially close to. The character “I” felt such closeness to the tree in the book. Growing up is
perhaps a series of letting go of something or someone you care about, or cherishing them in
your heart. Reading The Story of My Friend the Tree together and sharing stories about the
people and things they care about is a good experience for children and parents.
Using watercolor on mulberry paper, Kang has portrayed a memory of her childhood with
warmth and tenderness.
Even today, the tree continues to shake in the wind, get rained on, and shed its leaves in the
author’s heart. In a lyrical manner, The Story of My Friend the Tree depicts a cherished friend
who lives on in her heart.

Echo
Written by Lee Joo-hong, Illustrated by Kim Dong-sung
Deep in the mountains, in a small house lives Dori. Ever since his sister got
married and gone off to live over the mountains, Dori is left alone with his
father. His only friend is his echo. Then one day, lonely Dori finds a friend in
Mother Cow’s newly born calf.
This is a story about a buddhist priest living in
a hermitage deep in the mountain. This book
placidly describes the warm heart of the priest
who feeds hungry animals in winter and takes
care of moss on rocks not to be frozen. The priest treats all the things
around him as living creatures, and respects and preserves them while
exercising ‘generosity’ he learns from the Buddha. His practice reminds
us what are we losing in this world where respect and sharing minds
become shallow.
In the epilogue of the picture book, the buddhist priest returns moss to
the original place while he asks the families of the stream to get along
with moss like before. And he also tells moss to overcome adversity and
live by itself.

Crashing Waves at the Battle of MyeongRyang
Written by Kim Keun-hee, Illustrated by Lee Dom
This sad story is about a little girl who is wearing a han-bok and living with her
Chinese family. It takes place a hundred years ago, when our Korean ancestors
moved to Yanbian. Out of poverty and hunger, the parents have no choice but to
leave their own children to the Chinese people in trade for a handful grains. The
children left behind become slaves in the Chinese family. Ok-hee, the 10-yearold girl, is among one of those sacrificed children. The main theme of this story
focuses on Ok-Hee’s wish to see her mother again which is similar to ours
today, to see the re-united Korea. This story is based on the real story of a
Korean community in China.
In the 1597 naval battle of Myeong-Ryang, the Joseon sailors led by Admiral Yi Sun-Shin
experienced a great triumph over the Japanese, despite extremely unfavorable
circumstances. This was made possible by the soldiers who truly did their best to fulfill
their respective responsibilities. This picture book vividly conveys the situation of the Imjin
War through the main characters Haerang and Yeorang.
The strain of war and the remarkable resilience of our ancestors come to
life in the detailed, vivid illustrations of Lee Dom. Lee Dom created
these strong and unique images by first applying wax paint, and then
scraping the coat using a steel pen.

Life Cycle of A Praying Mantis In Miniature Drawings is an illustrated book that depicts
the life cycle of a praying mantis from the its stages of being an egg and larva to a pupa
and an imago and then returning to nature. Just as all life forms, once they are born they
must later die, thus a praying mantis, which is an insect, begins as an egg but also must
meet its death in the end. Kwon Hyok-do, the author and illustrator, shows the difficult
life process of a praying mantis that starts out as an egg and then returns to nature, thus
demonstrating the laws of nature. Ten years ago, the author went through a commotion of
having 260 larvae that hatched in the middle of the night from an egg sack of a praying
mantis, which he discovered and left in his desk drawer. He has written this book based on
his experience of raising some of the praying mantes, as well as his detailed longtime
observation of them in nature. In addition, he has provided background information, on
two facing pages, which shows the special characteristics of the subject with detailed,
miniature drawings. The process of miniature illustration requires one to look through a
loupe and with an extra fine brush do the illustration for each step by completing it dot by
dot. Furthermore, the author and illustrator concentrates on the tip of a brush, looks again
and again through a magnifying glass, and checks countless times; all this process is how
he created the pictures. A miniature thus completed with such concentration will offer
vivid energy that not even photographs can match.
Author : Kwon Hyok-do
Kwon Hyok-do was born in 1955 in Yecheon, North Gyeongsang Province, and studied East Asian painting at Chugye University
for the Arts. Beginning 1955, he has been doing miniature drawings of plants, insects, and animals that are found in the
ecosystems of Korea. The author is emphatic about how “all small insects are seemingly trivial but when one takes a closer look at
their lives, one will discover though they may be tiny, their lives are by no means small. In fact, regardless of how small or big
they are, all lives are precious.” He has written and illustrated the following books: Life of Insects In Miniature Drawings, Life
Cycle of A Tiger Swallowtail in Miniature Drawings, Flowers and Butterflies In Miniature Drawings, and The Butterfly Larva In
Miniature Drawings. He also did the illustrations for Illustrated Book of Insects and “Who Is it, Who? He was part of a team that

Observation diary on the village of Bom
Visit a frog’s rice paddy
Written and Illustrated Park Jae-chol
Bom has observed and recorded almost 300 kinds of living things. Since there is a lot of
creatures, you think that the village where Bom lives is very special?
There might be more creatures in your village. If you can adjust your eyes, you will notice
that there are tremendous creatures with us. Just take one step closer to trees and grasses,
and look into them a little longer. Then you will see ants gather food, and see larvae of
butterflies nibble leaves. And you will realize how the observation on such creatures is
pleasant and interesting.
Written by Yeo Jeong Eun, Illustrated by Kim Myeung gil
This is a story about a booger teacher who made this frog’s rice paddy and children who
often visit here. The children become friends of frogs, tadpoles, birds, snakes and bugs while
they are playing with the booger teacher at the frog’s rice paddy. This book fully illustrated
the shapes of the creatures and experiences of the children by focusing on the growth stages
of the tadpoles. This is a new type of ecological picture book mixed ecology of animals and
plant and children’s experiences in nature.

Automata Factory - How to Make Moving Toys

Children, Let Us Do Philosophy

Written by Han Gi Ho, Illustrated by Kim Seong Hui

This book introduces the world of automata to children and young adults, and by
teaching them how to make automata toys by themselves, the book helps them to
become more familiar with automata, use their artistic imagination, and have fun.
By reading about the history of automata and the artistic world of automata, and by
following the directions included in the book to actually make automata toys, readers will
have the opportunity to understand the art of automata which has been known so far only to
a very selective group of maniacs.
There are directions for eight different automata toys in the book with step-by-step
explanations as well as pictures. The book also provides actual-size pictures of dolls, and a
blueprint so that anyone can start making automata toys. Readers will get to understand the
mechanical concepts behind automata and become more imaginative as they think about the
picture of a toy they want, draw the picture on cardboard, and cut and bend the wires to
create a toy that moves. Buying this book for children will provide them with opportunities
to conceptualize and create their own toys instead of playing with toys simply purchased off
the shelf. The writers of this book have worked as an animation and film director, and as an
art director; however, since being introduced to the art of automata, they have been working
as automata artists. Using a simple mechanical device and different materials, automata can
be made to move in different ways. With their expert knowledge of the unique features of
automata, the authors have designed and produced different automata toys that anyone can
make. In this book, the writers take into consideration that readers will be children, so they
use simpler, easier mechanical devices and also materials like paper and wire which are easy
for children to work with. And for the character pictures to be attached to the mechanical
device, they have chose animals such as the duck, tiger, dragon, or phoenix that are quite
familiar in Korean folktales. The authors have recreated these animals to be simple yet
humorous and uniquely Korean-looking, which is hard to find in automata from other
countries.

This book is the second in the series, “Philosophy for Children,” and deals with a number of
current events in a comic book format that children could possibly learn about at home, in
school, from newspapers and broadcasting, or the Internet. Book 1 from the series, But What
Is Philosophy? delves into basic issues like the fundamental nature of people, certainty of
knowledge, determinism versus free will. Book 2, Children, Let’s Do Philosophy provides a
forum for philosophical debates on more complex contemporary issues, such as offensive
comments on Internet, eating dog meat, international wars, and euthanasia.
The discussion in each chapter starts out by posing diverse philosophical questions on what
one experiences and commonly sees every day. Children can then share their thoughts,
compare, analyze the bases of their ideas, and thus develop a system of logic.
In addition, “Socrates’s Philosophy Class” and the “More To Think About” sections in the
book assist children in understanding a point that they might have missed and also offer a
helpful guide for them to head in the right direction during a debate; hence children can
comprehend the issues better and acquire a deeper understanding, as well as a more versatile
way of thinking.

This book, the first volume in the “Philosophy for Children” series, deals with fundamental
issues of philosophy. Children can discuss and reflect on various aspects of six fundamental
issues of philosophy as they read this book. Chapter one, “What Is Philosophy?” leads them to
think about what philosophy is, and the remaining six chapters—“Human Nature,” “The
Certainty of Knowledge,” “Mind and Body,” “Determinism and Free Will,” “The Criterion of
Judging an Action,” and “The Value of Civilization and Life”—deal with various philosophical
issues. While many children’s books on philosophy have been published in Korea, including
children’s tales, allegories and educational books on philosophy, not very many have been
published in the form of graphic novels. This is an educational book on philosophy in the form
of a graphic novel, which children enjoy, that talks about philosophical questions children
come to have in their everyday lives. Graphic novels make it fun to reflect on issues that can
seem difficult. The author shares vivid experiences she’s had through philosophy classes with
children. An understanding on the various perspectives of children in looking at the same
issues helps readers relate to the issues. Based on her experience illustrating many children’s
books, the illustrator makes it fun
and easy to read the book.

- How to Control Your Emotions
This book deals with four basic conflicts which young children experience: conflict with their
friends, inferiority complex, jealousy, and control over making decisions. The book helps
young readers to understand their own feelings and teaches them how to deal with them by
letting them know that there is no one answer to solving different conflicts that arise in
friendships; they have to understand their own feelings and make their own decisions about
how to deal with them. The writer, who has been working as a therapist for children, uses
detailed and real cases as examples, and she explains the hidden motives and reasons behind
surface-level actions. One example in the book is a boy who is not satisfied even after scoring
perfectly on a test. The writer explains that his dissatisfaction comes from his mistaken belief
that his parents will love and accept him only when he brings home perfect scores. Also, there
is a girl who keeps asking her mother to buy her the exact same skirt as her sister’s, not
because she wants the skirt, but because she wants an affirmation of her mother’s love for her.
The book explains each case in easy, simple language so that young readers can understand it,
learn to recognize similar behavior in themselves—and in their siblings or friends—and think
about and figure out their own solutions. At the end of each chapter, the book provides a
problem case related to the topic of the chapter, followed by different answers from children so
that readers can compare others’ solutions to their own.
This book talks about eight basic mental states—anger, fear, despair, anxiety, tension,
irritation, guilt, sense of loss—and ways to relieve them. It doesn’t simply present solutions,
but shows that a variety of solutions exist. The author is currently working as a children’s
counselor. The author’s expertise and the real life cases she has encountered through
counseling provide a way in which children can find the best solution for themselves.
The cartoon at the beginning depicts a situation in which a person gets into a certain mental
state. For instance, anger is portrayed through a very realistic situation. Then an explanation is
given, along with fun illustrations, as to what anger is, how it occurs, and when. Then the
process in which the main character is appeased is shown. And finally, various ways in which
children think or act are shown. They include not only positive ways, but negative ways as
well, which lead children to judge for themselves.

This is the third volume in Psychology for Kids, a series designed to help children manage
their own emotions. We Need to Talk introduces the reader to NVC (nonviolent
communication), a communication process based on awareness of one’s emotions and those of
others. The methodology is made greatly accessible by the author, a professional child
psychologist, who takes a specific example and explains which communication techniques
might be applied to the situation. The accompanying illustrations in cartoon form contribute to
the books easy-to-read format. In the first chapter the reader learns that communication
consists of speaking and listening, and the first thing is to listen for the other speaker’s intent,
not just their words. The following pages introduces the four components of NVC—
Observation, Feeling, Needs, and Request—with examples. The most important thing in
communication, stresses the author, is to realize that feelings come from within. It is easy to
think that another person is responsible for feelings of happiness or anger, but in reality
feelings are the result of needs being met or unmet, and therefore one only has to look at one’s
needs to understand what one is feeling rather than attributing the cause to somebody else.
This book is sure to be a great help to both children and their parents. The practice cards are
particularly useful for learning vocabulary about expressing feelings, with the positive effect of
encouraging nonviolent communication between parents and children when filled out together.
