Shelter Says “Goodbye” To Malamutes
I
In early March, a van pulled up to Malamute Village to take the last of the
homeless Malamute dogs that were
rescued in October of 2011 in an animal cruelty case in Jefferson County.
The dogs, who had been in the care the
Lewis & Clark Humane Society since that
time, were finally freed by court order in
late 2012.
“It is bittersweet for all of us here at the
shelter” said Lewis & Clark Humane Soci-
ety Director Gina Wiest. “The dogs were
with us for 16 long months, and we got very
attached. However, we are sure they are
each going to the perfect home.”
The dogs were adopted by
people from Helena to
cities on the East
Coast. A special video

Dueling Pianos Raises Money for Shelter
E
veryone said they had a blast at the
first annual Dueling Fun Pianos
event in January which raised
$10,000 for the dogs and cats at
the shelter. Our friendly rival, The Prickly
Pear Land Trust was also a beneficiary of
funds from donors who braved the cold to
come sing and laugh.

Sabatini, the event drew close to 500 Helenans! We are extremely grateful to the

Dear Friends,
It’s incredible but true—most of the 208
Malamutes that were in our care for 16
months have found their forever homes!
March was a bitter-sweet month for the
many people involved in the caring for
these beautiful animals, as they began leaving Malamute Village for their new homes.
Our friends from the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League (AMAL) and other malamute rescue groups coordinated a huge
effort to re-home the dogs once their fate
was freed by the judge last December. This
rescue—the largest in the shelter’s history—
brought together animal welfare activists
from all over the country and the world.
We are tremendously grateful to all our
partners in the efforts, particularly the Humane Society of the United States’ Adam
Parascondola and Wendy Hergenraeder.
Without them we would have never been
able to have run this rescue for 16 months.
And without the brilliant work of the Jefferson County sheriff and attorney’s office the
case would not have reached a successful
conclusion.
We miss the mals every day; miss their
beautiful faces, their howling and the way
they greeted us each morning. May the road
rise to meet you; fare thee well.

It’s a wrap!
A fine time was had by all
800 guests of the Humane
Society on March 16th at the
Helena Civic Center for the
12th Annual Spay-Ghetti
Dinner. Over $50,000 was
raised to help homeless
animals! The silent auction
aisle was jammed with
bargain hunters, the live
auction items encouraged
friendly rivalry between guests outbidding each other, and the premier of It Takes A
Village: Operation Malamute Rescue video was a huge hit. The shelter is very grateful
to everyone who came, our sponsors, our auction item donors, and the incredible effort of almost 40 volunteers who came early and stayed late to assure a wonderful
event. Thank you so much!

We’re delighted to welcome Brittany
McGinley to the shelter as the shelter’s
new Volunteer and Education Coordinator. She replaces Holly Wiest who
moved to France in March to perfect
her culinary skills.
Brittany joins us from Susan G.
Komen for the Cure and we are thrilled
to have her energy and enthusiasm as
part of our team.
In addition to working with our talented volunteers and expanding the number of people who help care for more than 2,000
homeless animals each year, Brittany will also be working on expanding our education
outreach program. Welcome, Brittany!
Can you adopt me?
Our “long term residents” need of a forever home and their spirits are
growing weary in the shelter. Can you help?
Meet TAYNAY, a 2 yr. old submissive Mastiff. Taynay has experienced many loses in her life and she
is currently trying to find a shoulder to cry on. Taynay is a very quiet and shy girl. When you walk by
her kennel she is amazingly patient. As you reach
out to pet her she will bow her head, tuck her tail
and cower at times. Taynay lacks confidence and
is looking for someone to help her adjust to her
lonesome life. She is gentle, kind and sweet. Most
likely Taynay has been through some tough times
that are getting tougher. Her leash manners are
great and she knows how to sit, stay and come on
command. She would be best served in a single
dog home even though she has previously lived
with another dog. This dolly has a very sweet disposition and she is truly lovely. If you are looking
for a well mannered little lady with a funny little
under bite than come meet Taynay.
Hello! My name is PICKLES. I arrived at LCHS because I was a stray. I love having my face rubbed. I
have a gorgeous long mane that has buff tabby and
white on it. I get along with cats, dogs and more of
the quiet type of human beings. I would rather not
live with children under the age of six. I need a stable forever home and plenty of petting. I promise
to always be available whenever you need to just
unwind and give some loving. .

abandoned dogs and cats, patiently waiting to

Spring is here, and it’s time for Pansies for Pets!
It’s almost that time of year to support homeless
animals by purchasing your pansies during the
annual Pansies for Pets promotion. The brainchild
of long-time humane society supporters
Laura McArdle and Betsy Hovda, this event allows
people to purchases beautiful pansies in time for
spring planting. Thank you Betsy and Laura for
once again hosting this wonderful springtime ritual
that supports homeless animals.
Pre-order your pansies by calling LCHS at (406) 442-1660.
Pansies will be available for pick up on Saturday, May 4th
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 5th from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. at Murdoch’s parking lot, located at 3050 north
Montana Ave.
