CENTRAL COQUITLAM
2001 Neighbourhood Census Profiles
Central Coquitlam
The Census is conducted once every five years by Statistics Canada to develop a
national statistical portrait. The most recent survey was held on May 15, 2001.
The City of Coquitlam Planning and Development Department has compiled
data from several key census topics to provide a detailed overview for each
of Coquitlam’s 12 residential communities. Specific census topics have been
organized under the categories of People, Households and Dwellings. The
analysis includes a comparison between the data for each community and the
data for the entire city.
People: This section explores population change, population by age, marital
status, ethnic origin, home language and level of education.
Neighbourhood Population: 15,400
Gross Area: 932.8 HA
Households: This section looks specifically at household income, household
type, family type, and number of children to provide an understanding of the
overall household composition for each area of Coquitlam.
Dwellings: The physical composition of the built environment is explored by
examining dwellings by structural type, tenure (proportion of rented and owned
accommodation), and by the age of housing stock.

COM M U N I T Y S E RV I C E S
Central Coquitlam is well-established, offering a mix of older and newer homes. Most residential areas date
primarily from subdivisions that occurred from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Como Lake Village is a busy shopping centre, attracting customers from Central Coquitlam and surrounding
neighbourhoods. Other commercial areas, such as those in Austin Heights and in the Town Centre, are easily
accessed by residents.
Recreational opportunities abound in Central Coquitlam. Mundy Park is a unique amenity, 179 ha of urban
nature forest. Visitors to the City’s largest park enjoy the extensive trail system passing Mundy and Lost Lakes.
Others take advantage of a variety of sports fields and facilities and, in season, the outdoor Spani swimming
pool. The Poirier Community Centre Complex affords such indoor opportunities as swimming, curling, and
skating. Seniors have access to the Dogwood Pavilion, a recreation building devoted to their use. Also nearby
is the Poirier Branch of the Public Library.

Como Lake Village contains general retail and service facilities, including medical and dental offices,
veterinary services and restaurants. Proximity to the concentration of retail commercial and service
activity in Austin Heights and Cariboo/Burquitlam provides further shopping opportuniites for Centre
Coquitlam residents. Regional centres such as those found in Coquitlam Town Centre and Lougheed
Mall in Burnaby are 10 to 15 minutes away.
