Costas Christ, President of the Adventure Council, writes
the “World Class” travel column in National Geographic
ADVENTURE. An internationally recognized expert on
ecotourism, Costas worked with Dr. Richard Leakey in
Kenya on developing community tourism to support
wildlife conservation and joined National Geographic
Explorer-in-Residence, Dr. Sylvia Earle, in working to
establish a new marine sanctuary on the Mesoamerican
Barrier Reef. He has traveled to more than 100 countries,
including journeys to some of the earth’s most remote
places. He served as the Peace Corps Director in
Uganda and then in Belize, and was a Senior Director for
Ecotourism at Conservation International.

Robert Young Pelton, Columnist, National Geographic Adventure
Robert Caputo is the quintessential National
Geographic photographer. He has been photographing
and writing stories for National Geographic since
1980 and he is especially known for his adventurous
work in Africa, South America, and Asia. In addition
to his award-winning magazine work, Caputo is the
author of National Geographic’s popular Field Guide
to Photography book series. In these engaging and
informative guides (Field Guide, People & Portraits,
Landscapes, and Travel & Vacation), Caputo shares the
secrets to making great photographs.

Kira Salak has traveled solo to almost every continent,
visiting the world’s most remote places, including
Madagascar, Mozambique, Bangladesh, Papua New
Guinea, and Borneo. She was the first person to
kayak solo 600 miles down West Africa’s Niger River
to Timbuktu in Mali and the first woman to cross
Papua New Guinea, following the route taken by
British explorer Ivan Champion in 1927. In 2003, she
completed a 700-mile cycling trip across Alaska to
the Arctic Ocean. Her Adventure story about the
Democratic Republic of the Congo’s civil war and
its effect on the country’s mountain gorillas won her
the prestigious 2004 PEN Award in Journalism. She
has written two books, Four Corners: Into the Heart of
New Guinea, One Woman’s Solo Journey and The Cruelest
Journey: Six Hundred Miles to Timbuktu.

shared risks with his hosts and often has become the
sole surviving witness to history-shaping events. Pelton

climbing and exploring, he has covered the genre’s

risk taking. His presentation will reveal the wonder of
climbing, with amazing images from climbs around the
world and will discuss the nature of risk: identifying it,
