GRAND MONARCH’S MESSAGE
Prophets and Ladies,
Beth and I have just finished flying all over this great
continent, visiting with all of you and boy are our arms tired!
Seriously, it has been a fantastic five months of travel and I
would not trade it for anything. The hospitalities extended to
Beth and me have been fantastic and we wish we could head
out for a second round of travels. We may be from different
states or even different countries, but our theme is the
same everywhere: Fun, Fellowship and Philanthropy. I was
overwhelmed by the outpouring of gifts to the Humanitarian
Foundation at each of the association meetings we attended
and it seemed to grow with each visit. Thank you all for your
generosity to our charity.
I would like to comment on some observations I have made
during my travels. As we have traveled, there have been a
few themes that are areas for concern. Attendance has been
dramatically down at the association meetings all across the
Realm, and there has, in many cases, been a lack of planning
for the event. This is not pointed at any particular Association,
but the Realm in general. As I have traveled over the last
8 years, I have noticed that this has been the trend around
the Realm. As our membership has declined, we have not
changed the format of our Association meeting and there
are many areas of dead time during the event. When we had
200 Prophets in attendance we may have needed two days
of meetings to conduct business, but with 25 in attendance
that is not the case. When we had units traveling, we did
not have dead time in the afternoon, as they were filled with
competition and parades. We would have multiple hospitality
rooms to visit, and games to play in each one of them. Those
that were in attendance at the Ohio Grotto Association were
treated to a video of an OGA convention from 20 years ago
by Grand Chief Justice Mark McCombs. It showed them
traveling the halls of the hotel, going from room to room for
hospitality and a banquet with hundreds in attendance.
This can happen again; I challenge the officers of the
Associations to get together and talk with your Past
Presidents to discuss what worked and did not work for them
during their years. Talk with the Prophets of your Grottoes to
see what they would like to have at an Association meeting
and work to build up these events. Don’t be afraid to make
changes to the format of the meeting. This may require a
bylaws change, but it can be accomplished.
So many times we hear from the Prophets, “Why should
I go to the Association Meeting; what does it do for me?”
Well, I have been thinking about this as I traveled and I have
it down to one word – OPPORTUNITY! An Association
meeting gives you OPPORTUNITY. Opportunity to
see old friends, to make new friends, to share ideas with
Grottoes in your area and see what works or may not work,

work to a common goal and
help the children through our
Humanitarian Foundation. Without an Association you
would not have this Wonderful Opportunity. And to those
Grottoes that do not belong to an Association because they
felt they were not getting value for their money, I encourage
you to rejoin your Association and give them another chance
and take advantage of this opportunity. This can have a
snowball effect if it is planned correctly. If we can increase
attendance to the meetings, then we can plan bigger events.
If we have bigger events it will increase attendance. If we
increase attendance we will have more enthusiasm. If we
increase enthusiasm we will have more Prophets wanting to
be involved and run for office. If we have more competition
for office we will have more attendance to have a say in
who runs the Association. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have
several elections at an Association meeting to elect someone
to the bottom of the line instead of looking around the room
for volunteers? If you have an election then you immediately
create an opportunity to have a Goodfellow competition
while the ballots are being counted. See how easy this can
be if we just try?
Inside this magazine you will find information on the 125th
Supreme Council Session in Columbia, Missouri. We have
several exciting events planned and I hope that you will
take the opportunity to travel to Columbia for the Session.
We will have a guided trolley trip around Columbia which
will include a visit to the Missouri Masonic Museum and
Harry Truman Research Library. On Tuesday there will be
a trip to see the Clydesdale farm and visit a local winery.
On Tuesday night there will be a piano player at the hotel
for some entertainment and sing along. This event will
include some Grotto milk and snacks. Of course there will
be a golf tournament and lots of Hillbilly hospitality. Please
plan on attending the session and taking advantage of an
OPPORTUNITY.

One of First Lady Beth’s favorite things is Kewpie Dolls. Her pin this
year is a little Kewpie Doll. She is selling the pins for $10.00 each and
all the proceeds will be donated to the Humanitarian Foundation to help
some very special children with their dental needs. If you would like to
purchase a Kewpie Pin, please ask Beth or any of the Ladies of the Grand
Line and Grand Trustees who will have them in their travels and be happy
to provide you with one.

MEMBERSHIP PROGRAMS
VIP PROGRAM
Any Prophet who sponsors a new member or reinstated
member who has been out of the Grotto for at least 13
months between May 1st and April 30th will be entitled to
attend the Grand Monarch’s VIP lunch or breakfast at the
Supreme Council Convention in Columbia, Missouri.
VIP (UNDER 40)
In addition to the VIP program, anyone sponsoring a new
or qualified reinstated Prophet who is under 40 years old
will receive a special (under 40) pin.
KEY PROPHETS
Any Prophet sponsoring 3 new or qualified reinstated
members between May 1st and April 30th will be
awarded a distinctive GOLD Key emblem. Any Prophet
sponsoring 5 new members will receive a RUBY Key and
for 7 or more new members a DIAMOND Key. A Prophet
will receive one (1) key of the highest level he has earned.
If in attendance at the Supreme Council Session, the key
will be presented by the Grand Monarch.
SLEEP ON US
The first (10) ten Prophets sponsoring 10 new or qualified
reinstated Prophets between May 1st and April 30th will
receive one (1) FREE night stay in the convention host
hotel during the Supreme Council Session. The first
Prophet to sponsor twenty-five (25) new Prophets will
receive four (4) free nights at host hotel.
RECRUITER OF THE MONTH
The Prophet sponsoring the greatest number of new
members initiated in the entire Realm in any month, with
a minimum of two (2), will receive a $100.00 cash award.
The initiation report must be turned in to Supreme Council
office by the close of the following month. Awards will be
split if a tie occurs.
MASTER MASON NIGHTS
The Supreme Council will reimburse a Grotto 50% of
the cost, up to $300.00, for a Master Mason Night once a
year. Contact the Supreme Council Office for details and
a PRE-EVENT REQUEST FORM or find online at www.
scgrotto.org under Secretary Forms. **Please note that
a Pre-approval request form and a budget for the event
must be sent to the Supreme Council Office, attention
Membership, for approval prior to the event in order for
any reimbursement to be paid! Keep in mind that this is
not to be used in conjunction with any other event.
MASONIC HOSPITALITY
The Supreme Council will reimburse a Grotto 50% of
the cost up to $300.00, for sponsoring a hospitality event
at a Master Mason Event. This must be pre-approved,
including a budget and is limited to one (1) per year. You
must present your program for pre-approval with budget
and can obtain forms from the Supreme Council Office or
online at www.scgrotto.org under Secretary Forms. This
cannot be used with other events.
LODGE VISITATIONS & REFRESHMENTS
We will reimburse a Grotto up to $75.00 for attending
and providing refreshments at a Blue Lodge Meeting.
You must obtain pre-approval from the Supreme Council
Office. These forms may also be found under the Secretary
Forms online at www.scgrotto.org.
“IT’S GREAT TO BE A GROTTO MEMBER”
Booklets are available at no charge from the Supreme
Council office. A Grotto may have up to 100 per year.
Sufficient quantities will be given to every candidate of
a one-day class if allowed by the Grand Lodge of that
Jurisdiction.
POCKET PETITIONS are also available at no
charge from the Supreme Council office.
TRADE SHOW STYLE DISPLAY
A six (6) foot display (which can also be used as one or
two 3 foot table displays) is available for MASONIC
HOSPITALITY and other similar events where a
large number of Masons are present. (Shipping by
M.O.V.P.E.R.)
GRAND MASTERS RECRUITMENT
The Supreme Council Membership Committee will pay
the $50.00 “Prophet at Sight” cost for any Grand Master or
Deputy Grand Master joining the Grotto.
Please consider using these suggestions to your
advantage, get paid for signing up new members and
become a major contributor to growing the Realm!

NOTICE TO PROPHETS
Each year at the Supreme Council National Convention
four (4) management positions are available. Three (3) of
these positions - the Grand Captain of the Guard, Grand
Treasurer and a Grand Trustee are elected on the floor at the
convention and are open to Past Monarchs and Monarchs
only. The fourth position (Humanitarian Foundation
Trustee) is appointed by the Board of Governors during
the convention and is available to Past Monarchs and
Monarchs.
1. GRAND CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD
The entry level position in the Grand Line. Duties are to
guard the Supreme Council while in session and comply
with all wishes of the Grand Monarch. This office should
be completely familiar with the Supreme Council Code and
be prepared to accept more responsibilities as he progresses
through the Supreme Council Line to his ultimate goal of
Grand Monarch. He is a voting member of the Supreme
Council Board of Governors. He is paid mileage/per diem
for attending the National Convention and actual expenses
for Board Meetings.
2. GRAND TREASURER
Elected for one (1) year term. Duties and responsibilities are
outlined in Chapter V, Section 5.6 of the Supreme Council
Code. This officer is also a voting member of the Board of
Governors as outlined in Chapter VI of the Supreme Council
Code. He is paid mileage/per diem for attendance at the
National Convention and actual expenses for attendance at
other Board Meetings. Preferably, he should have a financial
management background.
3. GRAND TRUSTEE
There will be two openings this year - one elected for a two
(2) year term and one for a three (3) year term. Candidates
must specify if they are running for the two or three year
term, or, if they will run for both. Duties and responsibilities
involve the management of property and investing of
Supreme Council funds as outlined in Chapter V, Section
5.11, 5.12 and 5.14 of the Supreme Council Code. He should
be experienced in financial investing. He is paid mileage/
per diem for attending the National Convention and actual
expenses if ever to attend Board of Governors meetings.
4. HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION TRUSTEE
This is a position appointed by the Supreme Council
Board of Governors for a five (5) year term. For details of the
duties and responsibilities of this position refer to Chapter
X of the Supreme Council Code. Prophets interested in this
position should submit a brief resume of their qualifications
to the Supreme Council Board of Governors through the
Supreme Council Office. Remuneration is the same as a
Grand Trustee.
MEMBERSHIP RETENTION
Grand Monarch Mitch Weinsting has selected FUN as
the theme for his term. The Grottoes of North America
were founded upon the principles of Sympathy and Good
Fellowship ... better known as FUN. FUN is what the Grotto
is all about. Do you have FUN at your Grotto? How does
your Grotto promote FUN?
Having FUN is one of the simplest means of retaining
members. Does your Grotto do more than have business
meetings and ceremonials? If not, try to have some FUN. Be
intentional about having events and experiences that produce
Good Fellowship and enjoyment. You will be surprised at
how the participation in your Grotto will increase! Here are
a few ideas of FUN things you can do:
THEME PARTIES — Pick a theme, then decorate the
gathering place to reflect the theme. Ask members to dress in
accordance with the theme and have food and beverages to go
along with the theme. Give out awards for best costumes.
SPORT EVENTS — Get a block of tickets for a local
sports team. Minor league games can be lots of fun and as a
group you may be able to get your Grotto’s name up on the
scoreboard.
DINE OUT NIGHTS — Pick a restaurant everyone raves
about. Go out to eat as a group and rotate where you eat for
a variety. As a bonus you will be supporting local businesses
and get your Grotto’s name in the public conscious.
MYSTERY DINNERS — Invite Prophets and ladies to a
dinner, but do not tell them what will be served. Create an
experience based on the menu. Example: Italian Night with
checkered table cloths and Italian decor; Texas BarBQ with
western theme. Get the idea?

Due to the impending retirement of our current Executive
Secretary, PGM William Wears, the Supreme Council Office
is accepting resumes for a part-time Executive Secretary who
is elected by the Board of Governors. Duties are outlined in
“The Supreme Council Code” Chapter 5 Section 7 (5.7) or may
be requested from the Supreme Council Office. Applicants
will be required to be well versed in the Supreme Council
Code, Office Management, a Prophet in good standing, and
flexible in duties and hours. Please send resume by March

It’s my pleasure and privilege

Supreme Caldron year is off to
a great start after a successful
and fun-filled Supreme Session
in Tampa, FL hosted by Jr.
Past Supreme Mighty Chosen
One Sandra Carreras and the
Daughters of Zendah Caldron. It
was a joy to welcome Daughters
Lois Thiergart and Angelina Atala among the wonderful
class of candidates initiated into the Supreme Caldron and
Zendah Caldron during our Session.
Our Supreme Caldron theme this year is “The Golden Chain
of Friendship.” This symbol resonates through a number of
our masonic-affiliated bodies as an important reminder of the
bonds we have with one another and our wider communities.
Just as GM Weinsting is urging the Prophets to extend the
reach of the Grotto and encourage greater participation
by existing members, I am requesting that our Daughters
celebrate our theme by raising awareness of our Order to
attract new members and strengthening the ties between our
current members as we go about our great work of service
in cooperation with our Prophets. I’m proud to say that,
in addition to our steadfast support for the Humanitarian
Foundation, our Daughters have shown generous dedication
to many other charitable projects in their own communities.
I feel very blessed to be associated with so many caring
people.
The Daughters of Omala Caldron and the Prophets of Omala
Grotto are very busy preparing for our Supreme Session to
be held September 17-19, 2015 in San Antonio, TX. We’re
planning to show everyone a great time in our beautiful,
multi-cultural city. Please make plans to join us for the fun.

It’s time to break out the still and have a thigh slappin’ good time in Columbia.
The theme for the Hospitality Competition will be Hillbilly. So bring your ’shine
and snacks and get ready to have some Fun & Fellowship. There are 8 rooms
set aside for Hospitality rooms. They all open to the outdoor pool and have an
outside area with tables.

“GROTTOES GOT TALENT!”
Due to the declining participation in the contests at the Supreme Council Session, the Contest Committee, from a suggestion
from one of our Grottoes, is proposing to revamp the various contests and have an open talent contest with the theme being
“GROTTOES GOT TALENT.”
This contest would be open to any and all acts done in good taste. Each contestant would have five minutes to perform and
it will be open to all who pay the Supreme Council registration fee whether male or female. Comedians could tell jokes,
poetry, soloist either vocal or instrumental, even story telling would be allowed. These would take place Friday afternoon
to be judged by a panel of 3 judges who would independently vote and turn the results over to the contest committee. The
contestants with the top five scores would move on to the finals to be held at the Red Tassel Party Saturday night. Each
person purchasing a ticket to the Red Tassel Party will receive a ballot to be turned in, tabulated and announced by the
contest committee before the end of the party.
We will still have the Saturday competitions including the clowns, balloon making and competition for the pass and review,
which, includes the 3 and 4 Wheelers, Color Guard, Marching Band, Pipe Band, Drum and Bugle, Ladies Patrol Drill, Men’s
Patrol Drill and Motor Patrol. We will also continue with the various contests for the Poster Display, Web Sites, Hospitality
Room, Publications, Good Fellow and Officers Opening and Closing. These contest categories have not changed.
The details are still being worked out as far as the prize money and will be published soon online and in the Spring Grotto
Magazine. The registration form for 2015 is on the following page and online. We hope this new talent contest will stir
some interest to get your Grottoes back out to compete. We are always open for suggestions on how to improve the contests.
Remember, we are doing this for you so that we can all have fun at the Supreme Council Sessions.

CONTEST RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Penalty points will be assessed this year for late contest registration. All registration forms must be received in the
Supreme Council Office by close of business on June 1, 2015. Any individual contestant or unit whose registration form is
received after the above date will have the penalty points deducted from their contest score at the convention.
2. The Contest Committee will continue the Web Page Contest for the Columbia, Missouri, Convention. The contest will
be the Best Web Page by a Grotto or Association. The rules for this contest have been drafted and are available from the
Supreme Council Office. It should be noted that the registration forms for the contest must be in the Supreme Council
Office by June 1, 2015 so as to give the Judges time to review and judge the web sites before they leave home for the
convention.
3. The Contest Committee will use the same procedure again this year in awarding the prize money and plaques that was
used last year. An award certificate will be presented to the winning contestants and units at the Awards Ceremony on
Saturday evening. After the Supreme Council Office personnel return home, they will prepare the checks and then send them
to the winning contestants and units.
4. The Theme Hospitality Room Contest will be held again this year on Wednesday night, July 1, 2015, following the
Grand Opening. This year’s theme will be Hillbilly. The rules for this contest are available from the Supreme Council Office.
It should be noted that the registration forms for this contest must be in the Supreme Council Office by June 1, 2015.
5. The Clown Contest will have an additional requirement at the 125th Session in Columbia, Missouri. During the clown
judging on Saturday the clowns will be required to do a 3 minute act showing their clowning skills. This will be in addition
to the judging of their makeup and dress.

WHAT DON’T YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR
HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION?
Greetings Prophets & Ladies:
First, and most important, it is YOUR charity. It is the charity of the Grottoes of North America
and it is the one charity that, as Prophets we support.
Second, the Humanitarian Foundation is a non-profit charity governed by the provisions of
Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code. That means, your Humanitarian Foundation
must strictly comply with the Internal Revenue Service code and cannot deviate from it. This
means, your Humanitarian Foundation must spend a minimum of 5% of its endowment each
year and it must be spent on the charitable endeavors that your Humanitarian Foundation has
stated in its mission. Which is, to provide dental care to children with special needs.
Your Humanitarian Foundation Trustees carefully and conservatively manage the investment portfolio that keeps your
charity viable and keeps them in the good graces of the Internal Revenue Service. For the year ending May 31, 2014,
the Humanitarian Foundation portfolio gross was 13.27%.
But, the Humanitarian Foundation can’t exist on the gains from the portfolio. Your help is necessary. Do you know that
only 18% of Grotto members donate to the Humanitarian Foundation? This is a small number but, some gains have
been made. In 2010 only 554 members donated to the Foundation. Since 2010, One Thousand Six Hundred Twenty
Seven (1627) NEW PROPHETS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE DONOR ROLES. Donor participation is growing
in spite of our diminishing membership but, your continued support is needed.
Like other charitable organizations that depend on donations from its members, their families and friends, your
Humanitarian Foundation will continue to seek your financial support. So, please don’t lose sight of the three programs
that your Humanitarian Foundation sponsors; the ENCHANTED LANTERN, the FAIRCHILD SOCIETY, and the
LEGACY SOCIETY.
Let’s briefly talk about these three programs. Did you know that buying only ONE LANTERN every year can pay
for an oral examination or the application of a cavity preventive sealant on the teeth of a child? And, by the way, do
you know if you have not personally purchased a LANTERN you pay $1.00 more per year in dues than those Prophets
who have purchased a LANTERN?
The FAIRCHILD SOCIETY is a “giving club”. You can start at any level and when you’ve completed one level you
can move on up to the next. When you become a member of the Fairchild Society, your name is engraved on a plaque in
the Supreme Council Office and it is displayed at every Supreme Council convention. Please keep in mind the purchase
of an ENCHANTED LANTERN or joining the FAIRCHILD SOCIETY is not just for individuals. Your Grotto or
your Grotto Association can purchase Lanterns and they can join the Fairchild Society too.
By joining the LEGACY SOCIETY this allows you to make a promise to remember the Humanitarian Foundation
in your will or estate plan. You don’t have to tell us how much you are committing to the Foundation, you just sign
a statement of intent that you are including the Humanitarian Foundation in your will, insurance, retirement or estate
plan.
The most important thing to remember: When you buy an Enchanted Lantern, when
you join the Fairchild Society or when you make a promise to the Legacy Society, your
contributions go directly into the endowment fund. Remember, we MUST spend at least
5% of this endowment each year to help those kids that need our help. So, your donations
increase our ability to meet our mission.
Remember when I said, “Only 18% of the Grotto members donate to the Humanitarian
Foundation?” Let’s double that number this year!
