Dear Parents and Tenby Community,
This week, we had a visit from one of our star students, Emily Ho. She came back to the School
to pick up her IGCSE Certificates and caught up with teachers and friends as well. Emily has
done the school proud by achieving “Best Across 8 IGCSE Results” in the whole of Malaysia
which is a tremendous and rare accomplishment. Emily is setting her sights on Cambridge
University and we hope that her dream is realised.
Open Day
We had our Open Day last Saturday 14th May and the response was good. We would like to
thank our Prefects who represented the School well when taking visitors on a tour of the
Campus. Thank you too to the administrative staff and teachers who volunteered their help on
what was a very busy day.
Calligraphy Workshop
The Open Day also coincided with the Calligraphy Workshop jointly organised by Sekolah Tenby
and the Ipoh Calligraphy Society. Students from four other schools joined us for this event: SMJK
Poi Lam, SMJK Yuk Choy, SMK Ave Maria Convent and SMK Sam Tet. The workshop started in
the morning with a simple ceremony to launch the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme
with Sin Chew Chinese Daily. This is the second time our school is participating in the NIE and
we would like to thank one particular parent, Mrs. May Chan Chong Guan for making this
happen. The NIE is a collaborative effort by Sin Chew Daily to work with schools to encourage
the use of its newspaper as an educational tool to improve language proficiency. We would also
like to thank Mr. Lee Soo Mee and his team for organising the workshop. Well done everyone!
Provision for Students Fasting During Ramadhan
Our Muslim community is expected to begin fasting on Monday 6th June. Students will be
expected to carry on with their usual timetable during fasting month. However, during break and
lunch times, students who would like to rest in an air conditioned space, may utilise the Library. If
you have a child in primary who will be fasting, please ensure the class/homeroom teacher is
aware.
Class Split for Primary from September 2016
International primary classes will be split for September 2016 (if there is more than one class in a year group). In
doing this, we will ensure that students are placed with at least one friend that they choose. We will also take into
account various factors to balance the classes such as mixed ability, nationality, houses, gender and additional
learning needs etc. This is a lengthy process and parents will be informed of their child’s class for September at
the end of term.
Class Photographs for International School
We will commence class photograph sessions for the International sections in the following weeks. Sekolah Tenby
will conduct their photograph sessions later in September 2016.
Below is the schedule for your information:

This year, there will be Individual Portraits and Sibling Portraits (optional) as well. Parents who wish to have their
children take sibling portraits should inform their class teacher. For families with primary only siblings, the oldest
sibling will need to collect their younger sibling(s) from their class during their (older sibling’s) break or lunch time
to have their photograph taken on the designated days. For families with siblings in primary and secondary, the
sibling portraits will take place during the secondary photography session on Tuesday 7th June. Again the same
arrangement will be made where the oldest sibling will need to collect their younger sibling(s) during their break or
lunch to have their photograph taken together.
All students are expected to wear full school uniform (not PE Kit) for the class photographs.
School Calendar on Engage – Not Live or Active
We have received queries from parents regarding the status of the calendar on Engage (School Data
Management System). We would like to reiterate that the portal is in the process of being set up. As reported in
last week’s Newsletter, part of the set up process is to send e-mail login details to parents although the system is
not up and running yet. We will notify parents as soon as the system is ready in a few months. In the meantime
you may go to the school’s website to view the calendar or print the calendar under downloads>school information>school calendar.

Standard 4 – Kite Making
This week and last week, the Standard 4T and 4E students made mini kites during their respective Language Arts
lessons. In line with ‘The King of Kites’ short story which they are currently reading, the students learnt how to
create the basic form of the kite. The students were then encouraged to decorate their kites fit for a wedding, like
what Anil the main character, did in the story. While the kites were not made for flying purposes, the students
enjoyed creating and decorating a mini kite of their own. This activity also allowed the students to relate to some of
the main character’s experiences in the story.

rules set up for the Safe Steps Campaign (Belt Up). Your support is very much appreciated.
On Monday 16th May, the Parents’ Association (PA) treated us to a luncheon in conjunction with
Teachers' Day Celebration as an appreciation to our teachers. Some parents share their
appreciation by bringing in cakes. The teachers thoroughly enjoyed themselves. All in all it was a

Year 1
Exit Point to “Let’s Celebrate!”
The early morning rain dampened the spirits of the Year 1 children who
were eagerly waiting to carry out their water activity. However, the rain
stopped and they celebrated the water festival as an Exit Point for the IPC
topic “Let’s Celebrate!”. They had so much fun splashing water with
buckets and water guns at one another. A few parents came along to join
the celebration and had fun themselves. Thank you! to the rain for stopping
and allowing us to have a memorable morning.
The Little Fish celebrated the exit point of their IPC Topic “Transport” this week with a
bicyle ride around Block A. Roads, round-abouts, pedestrian crossings and police
officers with traffic signals were set out along the route for the cyclists to negotiate.
Pedestrians walked the route ad made sure that they used the pedestrian crossings
correctly by looking left and right. They had a lot of fun!
Bicycle riding is such an enjoyable activity and gives children the opportunity to express
some of the natural play urges that are important in their development. Added to this
riding combines gross and fine motor movements and demonstrates balance, spacial
awareness and the ability to negotiate play spaces. Overall it is great exercise and is
something that all members of a family can do together.

A Week in the Life of Year 2 Blue
This week, we have had a busy week of learning in Year 2 Blue. Below is some of
the learning that took place during our lessons.
In Numeracy, we learnt about adding money. We spent time learning about the
different coins used in Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Then, we tried to make
different amounts of money using the correct coins. After this, we started learning
how to change pence (55p) into pounds and pence (£0.55) and sen (24 sen) into
ringgit and sen (RM0.24). At first we found it hard, but we quickly got the idea and
started doing it confidently. Mr. Hamilton was very happy with the resilience that
we showed in learning this concept.
Also, we wrote Maths Mentor letters to Year 5 Blue. We wrote the things that we
find hard to do in Numeracy and asked our mentors in Year 5 Blue to come and
teach us how to do it. We received letters back from our mentors on Thursday and
we are excited about the lessons from our mentors in Numeracy Week.
“I’m so excited to learn with my mentor next
week.” (Isabelle)
“I can’t wait to play games and learn about
how to divide.” (Daniel)
“I’m looking forward to it so much.” (Hilton)

In Literacy, we were looking at finding information from a text to answer questions.
We have learnt that when we have to answer questions from a text, we should:
1)
2)
3)
4)
Read the question carefully.
Look for key words in the question.
Try to find words from the question in the text.
Look at the question word.
We looked at different types of texts to help us practise this skill. We are making
good progress, but we still need to spend more time doing this at home.

We continued with our IPC topic, ‘Time Detectives’, this
week. We are still in our History lessons and we have
enjoyed finding out about objects from the past. This
week, we focused on using different historical sources to
find out about the ‘life stories’ of different objects. We
worked in groups of three to research our chosen object
and then we created posters to share our research with
our friends. Finally, we presented the posters to the rest
of the class and answered some questions. Mr. Hamilton
was very pleased with the cooperation and
communication shown by us during these lessons.

gramophone.

poster on the radio.
In ICT, we have been learning about making tables in Microsoft Word. We made
our own tables to compare objects from the past to today. Mr. Hamilton has asked
that we spend more time practising our typing skills at home to help us get quicker
at typing. Also, on Friday, we began looking at using Microsoft PowerPoint to
present. We worked with Mr. Hamilton on learning the basic functions on Microsoft
PowerPoint and we are really looking forward to creating our own PowerPoint
presentations in the upcoming weeks.
