PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO A
SHRINERS BURN HOSPITAL
Admission to a Shriners Burn Hospital is essentially
the same as to a Shriners Hospital for Children. Here,
however, it must be stressed that timing may be of
utmost importance. The final outcome of a burn case
may be greatly dependent upon the type of treatment
and the speed with which it can be started. Therefore
in emergency, the Chief Surgeon has the authority to
admit the patient, having the application completed
at a later date. If then you know of an emergency
burn case, immediately call the Shine Ambassador in
the area. Let’s not miss a chance to put out a helping
hand. Be a true Shriner!

As I write this our temps
are still in negative
numbers or single digits!
March was indeed a busy
month. We had the YOSHI
Fun Night, the “Support
the Transport” night,
Pokagon Meet & Greet, Director’s Staff Beer Tasting,
and the YOSHI Easter Party at Jungle George’s, along
with our routine unit meetings etc. A big thank you to
all the Nobles who make these events the success they
are.
At this time we have 7 parades scheduled. These are
great opportunities to tell the public what the Shrine
is all about while at the same time having a great time
with our fellow Nobles. May 2nd is our first parade of
the year at the Shipshewana May Fest. Here’s hoping
for a great turn out. The folks in Shipshewana are really
excited about Mizpah being there, so I’m certain we
will have a large crowd. Following that, we will have
Imperial on July 4th, 3 Rivers on July 11th, Orland
on July 25th, North Manchester on August 8th, Great
Lakes Shrine Association on September 19th and the
Decatur (Callithumpian) on October 26th.
Our next “Really Big” event is our Spring
Ceremonial on April 25th following the Grand
Master’s One Day Class. We are hoping for a good
sized group of men to join us and become active
members of Mizpah. So, get out there and sign
up candidates. We can accept petitions up to and
including the day of the Ceremonial.
It is my singular pleasure to announce that I have
chosen Brother/Noble Larry Ashley to be the
2015 Spring Ceremonial Class Honoree. Noble
Ashley is a long time Shriner, member of our Class
Directors, Hillbillies, and Pokagon Shrine Club
and has served as a Chief Aide, and on many
committees. More importantly, I consider him a
friend I can call upon for advice and have always
received “good counsel”. Be sure to congratulate
Larry. This recognition is greatly deserved.

Speaking of the Shepard’s House, it is good to have
Lonnie back with us. He is finally nearing completion
of his building projects there and is able to attend
practices.
Lance has been making great strides with the bass drum
and, between him and Brad, we finally have a drum
section. Brad has been making a lot of progress and his
improvement is an asset to the band. Having Lance on
the bass also means that we can get Mark back on the
pipes.
Lest I forget anyone, Bobby has been a stalwart
member of the band. It is nice to have a unit member
that you can depend on to be there whatever the event.
We welcome anyone who would like to join the band.
You don’t have to have prior musical experience. We
teach bagpipe lessons and the drum section is always
glad to have another player. This could be your chance
to become part of a great tradition.
We meet every Wednesday. Lessons are at 6 pm and
practice begins at 7 pm.

Mizpah Vettes
Well it looks like, as I write this, winter does not want to
let go. It seems that we will have to wait longer than we
like for that warmer Vette type weather to arrive. Hopefully
spring is not far away.
At our February meeting the MIZPH VETTES were
pleased to welcome a new member to our Club. Steve
Sickafoose and Lady Beth Ann of South Whitley along
with their 2014 Corvette Convertible became our newest
member, we are happy to have you with us.
Our 2015 parade schedule is rapidly taking shape with
four or five Sanctioned Parades on tap. I say four or five
because, as was announced at the March Stated Meeting
by our Potentate, Gary Soblotne, the Three Rivers
Parade Committee has placed restrictions on Mizpah’s
participation by limiting the number of units it will allow
and the number of participants per unit. A decision on
Mizpah’s participation has not been made at the time I
write this. (editor’s note:see parade schedule on page 5)
The Vettes have scheduled a number of non sanctioned
parades in the area with Huntington, Columbia City,
Auburn, and Bluffton locations on our schedule. We
of course will be at the Decatur Callithumpian Parade,
however this year it has become a sanctioned parade. It
has been a number of years since all units have paraded at
Decatur, but I am sure everyone will enjoy participating as
this is one of the oldest parades in the area and draws a lot
of spectators, and is very well organized.

Legion of Honor
Greetings Legionnaires,
First I would like to acknowledge and thank
Brothers Barker, Page and Stabler for their work
in selling Shrine Circus advertising. Their hard
work generated three hundred sixty dollars for the
Legion Of Honor's treasury. Hopefully next year
we can do even better with greater participation
of our membership. Let's start thinking ahead of
businesses we frequent who might be interested in
purchasing an ad
Next I would like to congratulate Carl Brown as
Mizpah's newest trustee.
Parade season is coming soon and we all need to
be thinking ahead. Our first parade is May 2nd
in Shipshewana. For the LOH our second parade
will be the Memorial Day Parade in Fort Wayne.
The date is Monday, May 25th. We will marshal at
1000 at State and Parnell with the parade starting
at 1100. I would really like to see as many
Legionnaires as possible come out for this parade,
after all this parade is for our fallen brethren.
Well on the subject of parades it has been decided
to sell our parade trailer. Please help spread the
word that it is for sale. For information or to see

Greeting from Kosciusko County Shrine Club
We are all aware that the true success of any group
or organization is the membership. What has always
impressed me with Shrine is that our members seem
to be just as hard working and dedicated to other
organizations in our community. A great example of
this, is our own Noble V.P. Tony Ciriello, who was
awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from
Governor Pence. Not only was this honor deserved,
he earned it through his many hours on serving our
community. Congratulations to Noble Tony.
Upcoming events: April/May Onion Sales: May, Fish
Fry. More on these events in May's article.
Kosciusko Shrine Club meets on the second Wednesday
of each month in the Shrine Building at the fairgrounds
in Warsaw, Indiana. Happy Hour is at 6:30 in the
evening, meal at 7:00 with the meeting following after.
All are welcome, so plan on showing up and see what
we have to offer.
Remember what Da Judge said: Shake them bushes,
Find a Good Man, Make him a Mason and Turn Him
on to Shrine.

LNO hosted by Sue and Bob Dumford at the Sleepy
Owl in Syracuse was great food, good time and
enjoyed by all. March LNO was at Brevins in
Busco, one of our favorites, with the same results,
all honoring the Ladies for their special support
to help us. April we will be at Hall's Factory with
Bill and Margaret Kintzel as our hosts on April 18
in Fort Wayne, Mood Control at 6:PM. Mark your
calendar and see you there.
April 3 is Good Friday Trail Ride which helps us get
back in the saddle from our nasty winter. Seems like
our horses are always ready to get back in use and
enjoy their chance to get active. I just hope all the
couch riders feel the same way.
Remember April meeting was moved to the 2nd
Thursday to miss Good Friday for meeting and
Spring Fling which follows the next day. Hope you
have your ticket, this is a great time, good steak
meal, plenty to drink, plus chance to win $3000.00,

Capt. John VanVoorst will have his first practice
May 9 following the May 2th Shipshewana parade,
both good to get the season a nice start. I better go
pet my horse so he'll be nice to me, so off to the
barn and happy trails.
Hospital Unit
We had two functions to benefit the Hospital
Transportation fund in March. I don’t have any results
at this time but I hope they were successful. Thanks to
everyone that attended the Chicken and Noodles dinner
at Green Center United Methodist Church from 3-7 and
the dance at the Shrine on 3-14.

The Hapzim Shrine Club held its annual Circus
Essay Contest for the elementary students who
attend the 2015 Shrine Circus. This year, third and
fourth graders were included since the students
were unable to attend in 2014.
May 2nd is our first Temple Parade for the year and will be

children coping with debilitating conditions. Shriners
Hospitals for Children is committed to the pursuit of
knowledge that improves medical care.
Researchers’ Genetic Breakthrough
Recently, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Canada were the first to identify the
genetic defect underlying a painful bone disease
in children and teenagers. Led by Frank Rauch,
M.D., a pediatrician, and Pierre Moffatt, Ph.D., a
basic scientist, the team discovered that when a
part of the RUNX2 gene is duplicated it causes a
disease called metaphyseal dysplasia with maxillary
hypoplasia and brachydactyly or MDMHB. The
discovery was published in the February 2013 issue
of The American Journal of Human Genetics.
Those with this condition endure a life of pain.
Their teeth break easily and can be so painful that
they have them pulled by the age of 20. As these
patients grow, many have breaks in their spines,
similar to what occurs in elderly people with
osteoporosis. According to Dr. Rauch, “Now that we
know the cause, we can identify patients with this
disease earlier, and address their problems sooner.”

provides a 3-D full body
scan, capturing patients
in a natural standing or
seated position.
State-of-the-art Imaging System
Offering the most up-to-date treatment options is
also a hallmark of our health care system. Shriners
Hospitals for Children — Portland recently opened its
state-of-the-art imaging center, complete with a new
EOS Imaging System. This imaging system is the
first technology capable of providing 3-D full-body
images of patients in a natural standing or seated
position, with a low radiation dose. According to
Michael Aiona, M.D., chief of staff, “EOS represents
a true breakthrough, offering the most advanced
low-dose X-ray technology for orthopaedic imaging.”
The EOS system provides high-quality
radiographic images of the skeleton. It also delivers
a radiation dose up to nine times less than a
computed radiology X-ray, and up to 20 times less
than a CT can. This low dose makes the system
of particular value for pediatric patients, especially
children who need to be imaged frequently to
monitor disease progression, such as those
with scoliosis.
Three-dimensional body images of the skeleton
allow physicians to make more informed diagnosis
and treatment decisions. The new imaging center
was made possible through a direct-use gift from a
friend of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland.

A Screening Clinic will be held to identify children who can benefit from the expert care
provided a Shriner’s Hospitals.
If you know of any children from birth to 18 years of age who have orthopadic or burn
problems, bring them to the clinic for an evaluation to find out if they may be eligible for
care.

We are pleased to announce that Larry Ashley has been selected to be the Class Honoree for Mizpah’s
Spring Ceremonial.
Larry and his wife of 55 years, Sara, have 2 sons, Greg who is deceased, and Mark and his wife
Adelaine. who live in California. Larry and Sara have 2 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Larry is a retired salesman and lives in the Angola area. He is an avid golfer and brags that he once
caddied for Gene Sarrazan. If you remember Gene Sarrazan, you are really old. Some will tell you he
talks with his hands and sometimes spills things.
Larry is a member of Angola Lodge #236 and has been a member of Mizpah since 1981. During that time
he has been a member of the Class Directors, where he currently serves as Secretary. He is also a member
of the Pokagon Shrine Club and the Hillbillies. In addition he has served on numerous Ball Committees,
been a Potentates Aide 4 times, once as Chief Aide to Jim Lobsiger. He also served on the 2004 GLSA
Committee.
As you can see, Larry is a very involved and dedicated Shriner. I am proud to be able to give Larry this
much deserved recognition.

Ladies of the Household,
Daughters of the Nile
On Monday April 6th I will be having a practice at 7 PM
to prepare for our Stated Session Wednesday April 8th
@ 7 PM. Everyone please plan on attending. At your
meetings in April, Clubs and Units should be thinking
and discussing the respective fundraising plans you will
be hosting along with the dates for this year. These will
be presented to the Temple for approval at the May Stated
Session. If your Unit is not having a meeting in April
please contact all members and discuss this issue to set
your plan into action. This information will be included
in the Queen's Year Book you will receive in May.
I can not express the appreciation and respect I have for
all of you. I especially want to thank each one for putting
your trust in me to be your Teti Sheri Queen for the next
year. This comes with humble gratitude. I will strive to do
the very best I can for you and our Temple. I am looking
forward to a very successful and profitable year. My focus
is to concentrate on the Shriner's Hospital for Children,
that we will be able to make a difference in the lives of the
children and their families through our dedication, support
and volunterism. It will take each individual member to
bring this to fruition not just a select few. That being said I
am asking that each member, club and unit help do all they
can as your time allows to accomplish our goal.
I have spent a great deal of time concentrating on events
and fundraising activites for our next year. I am sure you
will find them new, refreshing and enjoyable. We will be
starting out strong this month. The Teti Sheri Nile Birthday
Party will be held Saturday April 18. Lunch will be served
at 12:30 PM followed by a hands on lesson of flower
arrangement from a Representative of Moring's Flowers
& Gifts. This should be a lot of fun as this is something
we have never done before. On Saturday May 9 we will
be having a Mother/Daughter Brunch from 11 AM until 3
PM. Bring any and all of your female family members or
friends. This will also be open to all the Shrine Ladies. You
do not need to be a member of Teti Sheri. Beginning at 1 PM
we will test our creative side with “Painting with a Twist”.
More activities are planned throughout the year and will be
announced at a later date.
Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Past
Queen Melody Tolliver for a terrific year. Even with a
few hiccups we had an extremely fun 2014-2015 year. I
really enjoyed the new ideas Melody brought to the table.
I actually had a blast helping out anywhere I could and
enjoyed immensly the events that were held. I so look
forward to your help and guidence through this next year.
As I also will with all of our members. I anticipate a most
fun and rewarding year with all your help and commitment as we work toward bonding with the Mizpah Shrine
to support the Children, their families and the Shriner's
Hospital for Children.

As Shriners, we are part of an international
organization that strengthens us individually,enhances
our families and makes us part of a history of brotherhood and camaraderie. As Shriners, we also have the
opportunity to be Legacies. The Legacy Program helps
strengthen our fraternal bond with those closest to us,
and allows members to honor the many men before us
who laid the foundation of our great fraternity.
Promoting both membership and the Legacy
Program will help ensure the future strength of this
great organization that has enriched so many of our
lives. Shriners International invites each of you to be
part of the Legacy Program, and to encourage your
family members to participate, as well.
Step 1: Who is Eligible?
All family members, including: sons, sons-in-law,
brothers, uncles, grandfathers, etc. are eligible
to become part of the Legacy Program. To make
the registration process easy, the membership
development office only requires one member of the
family’s legacy to register on Shriners Village.
Step 2: Register on Shriners Village
When logging in to your account on Shriners Village
(shrinersvillage.com), click on the “Membership”
tab on the top of the web page. From this page,
select the “Legacy Program” on the left-hand side
of the screen. On the Legacy Program’s main page
you will have the opportunity to read more about the
program and visit the registration page via the “click
here” link.
