FOREWORD
Our lives are albums, written through
With good or ill, with false or true,
And as the blessed angels turn
The pages of our years
God grant they read
The good with smiles
And blot the ill with tears.

ODE TO 1964 GRADUATES
On September eleventh, nineteen sixty one
To St. Thomas General we came,
Hoping when three years work was done
\O"* SCHOOL OF NURSING
ST. THOMAS-ELGIN GENERAL HOSPITAL
We could add R.N. to our name.
Excitement ran high on that first night,
Initiation, new acquaintance and all.
In the morning our heads were a little light
As we answered to duties call.
Elm Street
With fear and misgiving we started the day,
St. Thomas, Ontario
A whole new world to explore.
For six months we laboured with little pay,
But we gained experience galore.
February seventh, nineteen sixty-two ;
June 27, 1961
Miss Future Nurse
Mytown, Ontario
We shall never forget that night
We received our caps, was it really true?
Dear Miss Future Nurse:
Our hearts were filled with delight.
The Seniors graduated June sixth, sixty-two.
This will confirm your acceptance as a member of the class beginning in this

of September 11.
Then to other hospitals we went on our way
To care for the sick. We loved them all.
June nineteenth, sixty-three was another big day.
As Seniors each received a year pin.
Our duties increased but we tried every way
Our problems to solve and to win.
Then graduation. Our goal reached at last.
Now we will be on our own.
Will you please arrange to come to the school of Nursing and Residence Building
between the hours of 2.00 and 4.00 p.m. on Monday, September 11. The front
entrance is at 12 Gliddon Avenue, but, because you will probably have a
considerable amount of luggage and personal effects with you, we suggest
that you may find it more convenient to come to the back entrance which is
located just beside the garage in the parking lot behind the hospital itself.
We regret to leave our friends of the past,
Some of the best we have known.
Irene Kinvig (Aunt of Irene Graff)
Refreshments will be served for you and your parents who may wish to accompany you at that time.
Please note that you will take up residence here that day, after the reception,
as classes will commence the following morning.
We will look forward to meeting you again on September 11, but would ask you
to communicate with us in the meantime if we can be of further assistance to you.
Yours sincerely,
H. Bernice Lewis,
Director of Nursing.

MY CLASSMATES AND COMEDY MAKERS
Mood as mighty as a storm
These three years were not in vain
Or calm like sometimes sea.
Looking back we see the pain—
But kind heart, could not better form
The joys, the laughs, the hearts
Muffs' fair generosity.
That were our gain.
Each of us has left an unforgettable mark upon the other.
Who always seems to be a fluster
Our quirks, our dreams, so close as to no other
Who is it we'll not need to mention names
Gathering trouble like dust on the duster
If you tend to catch the bus
Wait not for Barb, in all her fuss,
You'll recognize their traits and their fames.
Pleasant she is and truly true
Who wears the housecoat always green.
Indeed a friend in need pursue.
With coffee mug can be seen.
Off to the wards with walk and sway—
Blonde efficient blue-eyed nurse
And the work gets done in the quiet planned way.
M. J.'s duties are no curse
The work is done, the battle won
Hail to the gal with our spirit at heart.
And ready she is for the fun.
Who laboured long, this book, her art,
Always a smile, hidden the frown.
Flash! There it goes again!
The camera bug, the endless pain
Good work Laurie, you deserve a crown.
The plague divine
Who wears the red pomped comfy points upon her feet
With pictures fine
While tending to her boudoir neat
And not so fine.
For this dear book
Remember the night she looked so cute
Off to Centralia in a devil's suit.
So take a look.
And thank the camera kid
This is what she always did.
Who burst out in lumpy lumps
And to the bed did take
All because she ate those buns
Whose seriousness can be found
With raisins 'stead of cake.
With quiet manner most profound
Who was the blonde with charm and wit?
Here's the stuff that carries on
When many fail Rose is strong.
Upon the rounds did ask.
About that mobenal, Doctor.
Whose red hair and humour match
The odd expression, you can't catch
How do you spell it?
Here's sobriety in truest form
Whose determination beats them all
The good old chief of the residence crew.
An all round kid .. . a ball
A worker, stewer, true how true
Whose dark hair so perfectly arranged,
Come on Chugs .. . Is this You?
Frames a countenance so clear
Whose laugh and screech delight
Could wake the dead and end the night.
Who's always game for the fun,
Whose gaiety is never done,
Whose tender heart will make a home.
Hair blonde or was it brown
Brown eyes that's for sure!
And someday settle, ne'er to roam
Constipation is her problem too
With lots of pep and a cure.
With laxatives she will pursue
But laughter is her charming gleam
For others blue and maybe down.
Oh, brown eyed kid, you're sure a scream.
Whose bustling walk and brown eyes
Light up when Vic arrives.
42
a
elk
Sparkling and here is happiness
Rare this quality and can you guess?
What's the future, hope it's good
With Jim and juniors, it really should.
43
Whose ere refined?
Pretty yes, and also kind
What are your plans?
Back to Bothwell and your fans?
Who is the blonde, come fall of the year
Will walk up the aisle, without a fear?
Calmness prevails and with confident ere.
Hope you don't "sneeze - , you'll mess your hair.
Who is most likely to succeed?
Who is mischief's royal master
As a head nurse, yes indeed.
Let's hope our career you will pursue
Plus also knit for Bob and crew.
No one could type any faster.
Remember that party and that snow,
Off to the Bay in Owen Sound
Lots of snow on the ground
"Still waters run deep.
Remember the dance, and the dolls
The Bowl, the food and the falls
Off to the ski-slopes
Remember your car?
That steep old road
Solitude she seeks, indeed.
To piano, thought or read.
And the miles so far.
The punch, the diamonds, did they glow.
Is it a secret, she may keep?
Many an hour, spent on this book
Gathering the ads, time it took
Whose bobbing head and certain smile
And headache, "the ads to compile - .
Sketch pad, pencil, Pauline and art,
Credit this book, its beauty, your part.
Whispering voice,
Pleasant ways,
"Nembutal down South"
Dr. Scott says it pays.
Who upon her abdomen flat.
Did spend her ten days thus
With bandages neat where she sat
Had many a laugh and many a cuss.
Nurse meets intern, "Sweet ernie hoot'',
This gal has the looks to boot,
One day soon you'll head out west,
We wish you all the very best.
Who has the petite and feminine way
Hair that gets in trouble
With the perky little walk.
She's late but an the double . '
Remember the week-end off in T.O.
The party, the shiner, the big elbow.
Where is that nurse and mountie too
Off for goals and bountie due.
If our country's law you break
Take leave fast, for Carol's sake.
Remember that Con, with the great big eye,
When the atropine shot (you thought right by)
Whose time off is spent with a certain guy,
And 'member in T.O. and all the fun,
The nine of us had, when the work was done.
Long dark-haired one with a yen
For adventure and the men
With admirers many she watches her st ,
How do you muster all the pep?
Who is serenity, sincerity combined
Lots of fun and very kind
Heading north after grad.
We know who will sure be glad.
For Margie, gather up your smile
For this gal, smile a mile
We don't think you have a care
And your optimism, Best by far.
Sincerity and conscience's keeper
We know you Glo, no soul is deeper,
Grow tobacco where you'll live
Lots of care, we know you'll give.
Stature small, almost frail
This gal can surely wail.
Quiet, yes, she may look.
Judge not a cover by the book.
Remember the dance and the decor
The cornstalks you dragged .. . ,
Whose bubbling laugh and blonde locks,
There couldn't be more.
Makes you smile down to your socks.
Fiery eyes, if fury enthralled
Follow the beat . . . "expresso"
The art, come, fireglow.
Remember me if you can ...
Forget me not, my name is Jan.
Remember this gal, if anger impalled
"Anger is a stone cast into a wasp's nest"
Remember this then and you'll be your best.

Last fall, we welcomed the Class of 1966 as our acquired "Little Sisters - . We
have appreciated your presence, as it has stimulated further growth and

maturity on our part in order to fulfill our obligations to you ; we value, too,
the friendships established through our comradeship. We know that you will
benefit, as we have, from your training at this hospital and the affiliated
hospitals. In effect, we wish that you may derive meaning and pleasure from
each day's opportunities and retain your dedication to the service of mankind.
Mr. Chairman, Honoured Guests, Parents, and Friends:
Now to honour our families — those who have given us love and understanding in plentiful portions: repeatedly we have required your counsel and

support, and just as frequently received them. You have listened attentively as
we related our misfortunes, and shuddered as we recounted our misdeeds. Yet,
equally important, you have instilled us with the confidence required to explore
an untried avenue, then rejoiced with us as we advanced along that new path-
On September 11th, 1961, each of us arrived at the residence door,
weighted down with our baggage and anxieties, only to be relieved of the
physical load and lifted in spirits by our - Big Sisters - . During our first uncertain
year our Big Sisters helped to steady our course with their sage suggestions ;
their support was invaluable in keeping our morale at a high level.
way. Your allowances for our sombre moods and light purses were much appreciated. This, our Graduation Day, is your dividend, and we dedicate this day
to you.
As our three-year period nears its end, we come before you to receive the
Pin and Diploma that symbolize our dedication to the nursing profession. We
Shortly after our arrival, the Instructors began to incorporate into our studies

to our care. Throughout our varied and sometimes trying experiences, Miss
Lewis, Miss Markle, and the teaching staff have set us an exemplary guideline to follow, then have made themselves available to direct us safely along
our chosen pathway.
As we depart, we will remember the people who have presented us with the
challenge to keep open the lines of communication for learning and living. Thus
we pledge ourselves to the service of God, the physicians with whom we will

couldn't be soothed . . . then came a timely address by one of the

spiritual leaders of the community, whose words inspired us to continue
our tasks with renewed strength and enthusiasm. This was the occasion of the
impressive Capping Ceremony on February 7th, 1962. We were congratulated
on completing the first significant phase of the nursing profession, and reminded
that, in truth, our education in this field of service had just begun.
Today's Graduation Ceremony marks the completion of the second meaningful
phase of our careers, and we — as graduating nurses — realize now
that Graduation Day denotes the termination of our educational period as student nurses and, at the same time, signifies the beginning of our careers as
professional nurses. In order to perform effectively as professional nurses, we
must continue to increase our knowledge, to grow in stature, and especially, to
sustain an abiding love for our fellowman. We pray that these ideals will remain with us always.
During our student days, there have been men and women who have prayed
with us and have ministered to us ; we are thankful indeed to those who have
given us the spiritual strength so much needed in the practice of our profession.
We are grateful too for the kindness of members of the Medical Staff and
the Nursing Staff of the hospital who have given us invaluable assistance as
we strove toward our goal of becoming more capable in the techniques of
caring for our patients. In addition, they have found time to volunteer enlightening facts of clinical interest to us throughout our courses. Because of
their help we have become more skilled and better prepared to meet the total
needs of the patient. We appreciate their interest, and we extend a warm
- thank you - to all hospital personnel for their generosity in our many times of
need.

'YOU will be better women for the life which you
have led here. But what I mean by 'better women'
is that the eyes of your souls have been opened, the
range of your sympathies has been widened, and
your characters have been moulded by the events
in which you have been participators during the
past years.
"Practically there should be for each of you a
busy, useful, and happy life; more you cannot
expect; a greater blessing the world cannot bestow. Busy you will certainly be, as the demand is
great, both in private and public, for women with
your training. Useful your lives must be, as you
will care for those who cannot care for themselves,
and who need about them, in the day of tribulation, gentle hands and tender hearts. And happy
lives shall be yours, because busy and useful; having been initiated into the great secret - that
happiness lies in the absorption in some vocation
which satisfies the soul; that we are here to add
what we can to, not to get what we can from, life."
