Symposium looks to future
By AMY GUCKEEN TOLSON
[email protected]
In a world of unknowns, the missions may not yet be identified,
but the Army must prepare and prevail, nonetheless.
The 2015 AUSA Institute of Land Warfare Global Force Symposium and Exposition returns to Huntsville’s Von Braun Center March
31-April 2, bringing together AUSA members, Army leaders and industry to address this year’s theme, “Win in a Complex World.”
“The symposium is a high-value, cost-effective, multifaceted perspective of the Army as it faces its future, and it provides a wonderful
opportunity for engagement of Army to Army, Army to other agency
folks, and Army to industry — what is industry doing to support the
Army of the future?” said retired Lt. Gen. Roger Thompson, AUSA’s
vice president of membership and meetings. “This will be an opportunity for people to understand how industry plays a key and vital role.
Folks can come in, check out the Army, see what industry is doing for
the Army, listen to presentations from a variety of senior leaders, as
well as network and interact with each other.”
Open to all AUSA members, employees and consultants of AUSA
member companies, military and civilian government personnel, and
non-members who have an interest or identifiable relationship with
AUSA or the Army, the unclassified symposium will give attendees the
opportunity be part of a discussion on the ways the Army can “become a more agile and response force to face the unknown.” There is
no cost for government or military to attend.
One only needs to turn on the news to understand the complexities
the Army is facing today, and the meaning behind the theme, “Win in
a Complex World.”
“The Army deployed to West Africa for the ebola outbreak — that
wasn’t on the Army’s list of known missions,” Thompson said. “You’ve
got the resurgence of enemy action, especially in Iraq, but also in the
broader world out there. You’ll find that Army missions go from disaster relief all the way up to long term combat operations – and the
threats are emerging from non-traditional sources. The Army’s got to
describe how they’re going to approach that and how they’re going to
be successful. The meaning behind “Winning in a Complex World”
takes on a variety of things unknown and known in Army missions.”
Presentations will be given by Gen. Raymond Odierno, chief of
staff of the Army; Heidi Shyu, assistant secretary of the Army for
acquisition, logistics and technology; Joseph F. Martin, acting director for research and development partnerships for the Department
of Homeland Security; Gen. David Perkins, commanding general of
the Army Training and Doctrine Command; Gen. Dennis Via, commanding general of the Army Materiel Command; Lt. Gen. Frederick
Hodges, commanding general of United States Army Europe; and Lt.
Gen. H.R. McMaster Jr., deputy command general, futures/director,
Army Capabilities Integration Center, Army Training and Doctrine
Command. Many other leaders and experts from Army, as well as industry and academia are also scheduled to participate. The featured
command for 2015 is the Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Panel topic discussions include: Army warfighting challenges, increasing the rate of innovation, S&T driving innovation for the Force
2025 and beyond, and sustaining Army readiness to “Win in a Complex World.”
“This Army Operating Concept lays out 20 warfighting challenges,
across a broad array of categories of threats and requirements for new
capabilities or strengthening capabilities, the challenges of science and
technology, research and development, innovation, interaction between Army and other services, as well as Army and other governmen
agencies — all those will be addressed as part of this,” Thompson said.
“Industry’s challenges in innovation, how the Army innovates, and th
implications of the Department of Defense’s acquisition and technology approaches, such as Better Buying Power 3.0 will be issues that
should be addressed as some part of the discussions.
“The big ‘gorilla in the closet’ for the Army and for the United State
is the devastating budget cuts known as sequestration, which is scheduled to be reinstated by the Congress of the United States on the 1st
of October, unless something is done. This is among the many topics
and challenges that will be addressed this year, because it destructively
undermines Army strength and readiness.”
Over 200 exhibitors have registered for the event; there is no cost to
attend the exhibit hall. The symposium will also include an innovation
pavilion, which will provide the opportunity for innovators to network
with one another, and learn about how their work may be one day
rolled out to the Army.
This year’s symposium will provide many takeaways for attendees,
Thompson said.
“They will be more informed about Army strategy in these topic
areas, and can gain an in-depth understanding of the complex environment, and the way forward,” Thompson said. “It’ll be important
to understand Army, Department of Defense and Department of
Homeland Security roles, views and approaches and the impact of sequestration. This event will highlight the role innovation plays and how
can innovators bring their ideas and unique approaches to the Army.”

The Association of the United States
Army (AUSA) has again partnered with
the American Freedom Foundation to
host the Warriors To The Workforce
Hiring Event for veterans, in conjunction with SourceAmerica, GES, and Still
Serving Veterans, to be held at the 2015
AUSA Global Force Symposium and
Exposition March 31 – April 2.
This one-day event, to be held on
Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Von
Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala., is part
of the American Freedom Foundation’s
nationwide initiative to help veterans
find jobs.
The first event was held at the AUSA
2013 Annual Meeting and Exposition ,
and was featured again at the 2014 Annual Meeting exhibit hall . Also last year,
it was held in Huntsville at the Association’s symposium .
This program was a great success according to the hundreds of veterans who
participated in this new program.
The hiring event this year will again
bring together major companies from
throughout the country to profile their
services and provide employment opportunities for veterans.
Veterans attending the Global Force
Symposium and Exposition have the opportunity to talk with employers, submit
qualifications and even participate in job
interviews on the spot.
Warriors To The Workforce is unique
in that the American Freedom Foundation will vet out resumes and match those
qualified veterans, transitioning military
service members and spouses with employers with specific job descriptions.
In addition to the hiring event, Warriors To The Workforce will include
workshops for veterans providing resources and information on subjects such
as mental readiness, confidence building, networking and presentation skills,
resume writing, interviewing techniques,
job searching, career planning through
goal setting, translating military skills
and training into civilian life and corporate experience, among others.
Attendance at the Warriors To The
Workforce Hiring Event is free and open
to veterans, military service members and
spouses.
The 2015 AUSA Global Force Symposium and Exposition will will explore the
capabilities outlined in the Army Operating Concept and how the force transforms from being adaptive to driving innovation for Force 2025 and beyond.

Rocket City Bash to return for 2015
On 1 April 2015, the Redstone Chapter of AUSA will host the second annual
Rocket City Bash during AUSA’s Global Force Symposium and Exposition.
Last year’s inaugural event was a tremendous success, thanks in a large part to
the band The Swinging Medallions. Also known as the ‘The Party Band of the
South’, The Swinging Medallions are back again for the 2015 Bash!
The Rocket City Bash is an evening of networking and fun for the members,
sponsors, and friends of the Redstone-Huntsville AUSA chapter. The Bash is
being held at Huntsville’s Space and Rocket Center’s Davidson Center. The
evening of dining and dancing occurs under the Saturn V Moon Rocket, a
National Historic Landmark. The Davidson Center is surrounded by historic
artifacts and interactive exhibits for space exploration which enhances the entertainment value of the evening.
Starting with a social hour, the Bash includes an excellent buffet dinner, good
table conversation, and the live music from ‘The Party Band of the South’.
Last year’s 600 attendees had a super evening of great food, music, and dancing (not everyone was a great dancer but all had fun). The dance floor was
packed and opened for hours. The entertainment also included watching The
Swinging Medallion saxophonist play a song upside down.
Transportation to the Bash is provided free from the Von Braun Center. The
dress code is casual. Sponsorships and individual tickets are rapidly being
purchased and won’t be available long – last year’s Bash was sold out. To find
out more information about the second annual Rocket City Bash go to http://
ausameetings.org/globalforce/rocket-city-bash/.
Put on your dancing shoes and we will see you there!
The Swinging Medallions sing their hit “Double-Shot of My Baby’s Love” at the
inaugural AUSA Winter Blast-off Bash.

U.S. Army Materiel Command – sustaining the strength of the nation
The U.S. Army Materiel Command is the Army’s
premier provider of materiel readiness – technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power
projection, and sustainment – to the total force, across
the spectrum of joint military operations.
The command’s complex missions range from development of sophisticated weapons systems and cutting-edge research, to maintenance and distribution of
spare parts. AMC operates the research, development
and engineering centers; Army Research Laboratory;
depots, arsenals and ammunition plants; and maintains the Army’s Prepositioned Stocks, both on land
and afloat. The command is the Department of Defense Executive Agent for the chemical weapons stockpile and for conventional ammunition.
To develop, buy, and maintain materiel for the Army,
AMC works closely with Program Executive Officers,
the Army acquisition executive, industry, academia,
and other related agencies. AMC also handles the majority of the Army’s contracting including a full range
of contracting services for deployed units and installation-level services, supplies, and common-use information technology hardware and software. With the only
contingency contracting capability in DoD, AMC accounts for 70 percent of the Army’s contract dollars.
The command leads, manages, and operates the Army’s Organic Industrial Base. Consisting of more than
20 one-of-a-kind facilities, the OIB overhauls, modern-

izes, and upgrades major weapons systems – not just making them like new, but inserting
technology to make them better and more reliable. The OIB manufactures and resets our
Army’s equipment, generating readiness in our formations.
AMC is regionally aligned and globally responsive, providing assets through a team of
teams that includes Army Field Support Brigades, Contracting Support Brigades, Transportation Brigades, and Field Assistance Science and Technology Teams, all of which
identify and resolve equipment and maintenance problems, and materiel readiness issues
for combatant commands. The command handles diverse missions that reach far beyond
the Army. For example, AMC manages the multibillion-dollar business of selling Army
equipment and services to partner nations and allies of the United States, and negotiates
and implements agreements for co-production of U.S. weapons systems by foreign nations.
AMC includes global transportation experts who provide the Warfighter with a single surface distribution provider for adaptive solutions that deliver capability and sustainment on
time.
The AMC Science and Technology program develops, integrates and sustains unique
science, technology and engineering solutions to ensure the Army and Joint Forces have a
competitive advantage. AMC is on the front lines of modernization, innovation and transformation.
Headquartered at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, AMC impacts or has a presence in all 50
states and 145 nations across the globe. The command’s 65,000-strong workforce includes
dedicated military and civilian employees, many with highly developed specialties in weapons development, manufacturing and logistics.
AMC is the premier provider of Army and Joint readiness to sustain the strength of the
nation. From research and development to contracting, acquisition and manufacturing,
from supply and distribution to sustainment and resale, AMC touches every phase of the
materiel life cycle . AMC, as the Army’s Lead Materiel Integrator, commands the global
supply chain by delivering materiel readiness to our Joint Forces worldwide.

Innovation hot topic for attendees
to have the best led, best trained, and most technologically advanced Army in this complex world.
This is why AUSA has chosen ‘Win in a Complex
World’ as the theme for this year’s professional development forum.
This is the second year that the symposium is being held in Huntsville, Alabama. Last year’s event
was a tremendous success, with attendance of over
6,000 exhibitors and participants. Of the 2014 attendees, 28% were from military and government
organizations. For 2015, AUSA is expecting an even
larger turnout.
The Global Force Symposium will be 31 March to
2 April 2015, at the Von Braun Center in downtown
Huntsville. The location, near AMC Headquarters

and Redstone Arsenal, allows for maximum participation for military, civilian, and industry attendees. This year’s Symposium will include key leaders
and personnel from TRADOC, ASA (ALT), AMC,
SMDC, AMCOM, AMRDEC, as well as many other organizations.
The three-day Symposium will include panel discussions covering a variety of topics and presentations from Army military, civilian, and industry
leaders. The Exhibit Hall presents opportunities for
industry and government exchanges and focused
forums. Army Warfighting Challenges, Increasing
the Rate of Innovation, and Force 2025 and Beyond Maneuvers are examples of the topics for the
panel discussions. The list of presenters includes the
Chief of Staff of the Army, the AMC Commanding General, the TRADOC Commanding General,
and the ASA (ALT). The featured command for th
2015 Symposium is TRADOC.
AUSA’s 2015 Global Force Symposium and Exhi
bition is a professional military forum that will provide military and industry organizations the opportunity to exchange information and to dialog about
future Army capabilities and needs, and industry’s
technological capabilities and advancements. AUSA
and its industry partners share a common goal with
the Army: to develop a Force 2025 and beyond tha

How must the Army re-form itself to meet the
challenges of a rapidly changing global situation?
With unknown enemies and worldwide potential
locales for engagements, this difficult and ever
changing environment demands an Army that is
adaptable, agile, and rapidly responsive. Winning
in the future necessitates an Army that is well-led,
well-trained, and well-equipped. AUSA’s ILW 2015
Global Force Symposium and Exhibition (formerly
AUSA’s Winter Symposium) will focus on the Army
Operating Concept and the capabilities needed for
Force 2025 and beyond.
An emphasis for the Symposium is how to drive
innovation that delivers a Force 2025 that is leaner,
smarter, flexible, and more lethal. Technology advancements, combined with enhanced leader and
Soldier education and training, provide the Army
the opportunity to build a force that will maintain
competitive overmatch against our Nation’s potential adversaries.
The constantly changing geopolitical environment within the context of resourced constrained
budgets presents major challenges in developing a
Force 2025 that meets the demands of an Army that
is aligned with the Nation’s strategic vision and priorities. To remain the world’s decisive military institution, the Army needs to focus on restructuring
military-industrial programs to ensure we continue

WELCOME, GLOBAL FORCE SYMPOSIUM AND EXPOSITION
As Mayor of Huntsville and on behalf of our citizens, it is an honor and
pleasure to “welcome” the 2015 Global Force Symposium and
Exposition sponsored by the Association of the United States Army

The AUSA Global Force Symposium and Exposition brings together
practically 200 exhibitors highlighting the latest state-of-the-art arms,
equipment and developing technologies for today’s Army focusing on
America’s Army – sustaining, training, and equipping for the future.
A special acknowledgement goes to Michael Scanlan and staff for
tirelessly coordinated this year’s symposium. Many hours were spent
preparing and planning to make this a great success and our City
benefits from those efforts. I thank you for choosing Huntsville as your
host city and utilizing our Von Braun Center for this exciting exhibition.
While you are in our City, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy the many sights and attractions Huntsville
has to offer – among them are the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the Huntsville Museum of Art, Early Works,

WELCOME TO THE
CITY OF MADISON
Welcome to the 2015 AUSA Global Force Symposium and Exposition. As the Mayor of the
City of Madison, and as a retired Army officer, I am proud to welcome you to our community.
Madison is a dynamic City with a unique blend of southern charm, rapidly growing households
and businesses, and an outstanding quality of life. Conveniently located adjacent to the city of
Huntsville, Huntsville International Airport, and Redstone Arsenal, we are one of the fastest
growing cities in the state of Alabama. Many of our citizens work as part of Team Redstone,
continuing to support our military on a daily basis.
Our city is also known for outstanding schools. Our school system has received national
recognition for academic excellence and continues to attract families to our city who are looking
for a small town, with an outstanding educational system for their children. Successfully
educating our next generation and maintaining strong support to our Army of the future is
important to all of us.
As a retired military member I am proud of the many veterans that we have in our community,
and the tremendous support that we receive from our local AUSA chapter. My family and I
decided to retire from the Army, to make Madison our home and to support the veterans in our
community. We are very proud of our community and welcome you to explore our City. We
hope you will stay with us for a day, a week, or a lifetime.
Sincerely,
Troy Trulock
