2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends and Families of St. Rose,
We celebrate another year of growth of both students and facilities
on our campus, and we are pleased to share the good news of the
previous year with you in this Annual Report. With an average
enrollment growth of over 15% a year, we thank you for your continued support our mission toward the integral formation of the
entire Christian youth: mind, body and spirit.
In addition, the School and Early Childhood programs are now housed in shared space
with many families entrusting their children of all ages to our care. As students grow
here, they ultimately graduate from 8th grade with an enriched experience having
shared the word of God with one another for 10 years.
This Annual Report outlines the successes of our year as we continue to plan for our future.
Join in in the celebration of God’s work here at St. Rose of Lima Catholic
School.
Achieving Our Goals
In 2009, the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston implemented the Lumen Pro Via (Light for the Way) study to outline goals and strategies in order to help all of our schools
to build towards a brighter future. As this study moved into the implementation phase in 2012, St.
Rose of Lima began a dynamic focus on compiling our strategic plan in terms of 1, 3, and 5 year goals
with the help of our own community’s vision. In January of 2013, St. Rose of Lima requested feedback from our parents and parishioners through the use of surveys and focus groups. The resulting
plan was challenging and sparked enthusiasm amongst St. Rose Administration and Leadership. At the
end of the 2013-2014 school year, review of the Strategic Plan showed that 63% of the established one
and three-year goals to be completed.

Notes to Statements of
Income and Expense
1. Tuition/Fees budget originally based on 225
students, enrollment for 2013-14 was 217.
2. Includes Late, NSF and Band Fees for the year.
3. The 2013-14 Annual Fund received a very generous one time gift of $50,000.
4. Special gifts were moved into restricted accounts
based on the wishes of the donors, thus leaving a
large variance within the unrestricted account.
5. Club/Student Activity Sales includes fundraising
done by our 8th grade students for their class trip
as well as the new Karate program. This variance is reflected equally in the income and expense sections of the budget.
6. The original budget for salaries and benefits
included pay for a resource teacher and a technology teacher. The resource teacher position
was combined with the religion teacher position
and the hired technology teacher left the position
mid-year.
7. Administrative expenses experienced an overage
due to a one time purchase of copy equipment.
St. Rose moved from rental agreements to ownership in order to realize long-term savings.
8. A new reading program and other items were
purchased during this year with those expenses
absorbed through one-time restricted donations.
9. Plant Operations included additional expenses
incurred in order to renovate classrooms 18 and
20 for the upcoming 2014-15 school year.
10.Overages for various line items that combine for
a total net of $61,224 are deposited into a savings based trust account for emergency and/or
capital based future expenses.
Faculty Spotlight
Mary Andrews, Celebrating 40 Years
Take a prospective parent tour at St. Rose of Lima and chances are that at least one parent on
the tour was a former student of Mary Andrews. In 1976, Mrs. Andrews joined our staff
from 2 years of teaching at St. Charles Borremeo. Thirty-eight years later and not only has
Mary been an part of our school, but her 3 children with husband, Gary, along with granddaughter, Jaycelyn have all been St. Rose alums. Mary has been an integral part of faith formation at both the school and parish as a Sacramental Preparation teacher for our 2nd
grade. She finished her years at St. Rose as Religion teacher to PreK thru 5th grades.
We are grateful for Mrs. Andrews many years of service to children and families, sharing the
word of God to all. She was recently celebrated for her work with recognition at the 2014 All
Schools Mass, shaking hands with Bishop Sheltz and Dr. Vogel, Superintendent of Schools
for the Archdiocese.
Mary Andrews Teacher of the Year Award
In honor of her years of service to our school, St. Rose of Lima Catholic
School started the Mary Andrews Teacher of the Year Award. This
honor will be awarded annually to a teacher whose dedication and service mirror that of Mrs. Andrews and who excels in the formation of the
Mind, Body and Spirit of our children.
The award is accompanied by a monetary stipend to the winning teacher. To support
the Mary Andrews Teacher of Year Fund, please contact the Development Office at
832-320-4107.
IOWA TESTING
Each March, our 1st – 7th graders complete the IOWA Test of Basic Skills that is normed nationally.
A score of 50%ile marks on- level for grade, and we are pleased to report that most of our classes
scored much higher, with some into the 4th quartile, 2nd Grade being the highest at 88%ile. Congratulations to both students and teachers on these accomplishments.

Fulfilling our Mission
In fulfillment of our mission and in honor of our parish's first pastor, St. Rose of
Lima awards annual tuition assistance through the Monsignor Paul Pieri Fund,
providing financial assistance to students in need. The fund was established
based on his wishes following his death in 1969. The Fund was started in order
that no child would be denied the benefits of a Catholic education based on their
financial status. It is maintained through annual donations requested of our parish community through a special second collection and of our school families
through our annual fund.
During the 2013-2014 school year, 9 families received assistance totaling
$12,670. Through the generosity of donors to our Annual Fund and parish second collections, along with a $7,000 grant from the Charity Guild of Catholic
Women, St. Rose collected $13,417.36 in support of the Fund to be awarded for
the 2014-2015 school year.
To support the Monsignor Paul Pieri Fund, please contact the Development Office at 832-320-4107.
Monsignor Paul Pieri, circa 1946
Our Mission is…
The integral formation of the entire Christian
Youth: Mind, Body and Spirit.
Corporate and Reward Gifts
Each year we ask parents to collect
Box Tops for Education, Coke Rewards points, and Campbell's Soup
Labels. These programs make it possible for our school to make several
changes to our campus including upgrades in technology, new classroom
materials and even additional programing.
Coke Rewards and Campbell’s Label’s
for Education reward St. Rose through
a catalog of materials available through
point redemption. For the 2013-2014
school year, our Coke Reward points
afforded us a new 32” LED TV to be
used in our ASAP program. With
points earned through the Campbell’s
Labels for Education we were able to
get a new art drying rack to be used in
the PreK classrooms this year.
A new tutoring program was instituted
last Fall in order to offer additional
support to those students who received
a 60% or below on the IOWA test during the previous Spring. Those students
identified as benefitting from additional help were offered afterschool tutoring at no additional cost. During this
formative year, 24 students were tutored through this new program, with
another 15 receiving support through
Title 1 tutoring.
In support of this program, the school
received funding through the Target
Take Charge of Education program as
well as a generous $2,000 grant from
Dynegy made possible through their
employee and one of our Total Board
of Education members, Leslie Haydel.
Monetary donations made possible
through the Box Tops for Education and
Kroger Neighbor totaled $3,656 for the
2013-2014 school year. These donations, along with a generous $2,000
grant from IBM , made possible through
long-time St. Rose volunteer, Wally
Bircher, allowed for upgrades in our
campus technology. These upgrades
included increasing the quality of our
wireless coverage in the classrooms
along with increasing security and protection of our students while on our internet connections.
Please remember to register for our
Kroger Community Rewards and
Target Take Charge of Education
programs and keep collecting those
Box Tops, Campbell’s Soup Labels
and Coke Reward points!
A generous St. Rose parishioner, Ms. Matilda Bubela
honored our community this past year by including St.
Rose in her estate. In addition to gifts made to the St.
Rose of Lima Food Pantry and the Men’s Club, the
wishes of this wonderful woman included a gift to our
parish, which, in fulfillment of her family’s wishes
was used to rebuild our PreK/Kinder playground.
In the Fall of 2013, our playground was uprooted and
fenced off in order to allow for renovations to the
original 1948 school wing. This summer, through Ms.
Bubela’s generosity and the hard work of the St. Rose
Building and Maintenance committee, the playground
was rebuilt to include vibrant new equipment and is
ready to welcome our PreK and Kindergarten students
this coming Fall.
Wishes become reality⁄.
As our school continues to grow by more than 15% annually, so do the needs of our students. Each year St. Rose of
Lima has been able to expand and progress our programs, classrooms and instructional materials offered through the
generosity of our donors and our growing budget.
During the 2013-2014 school year, efforts to publicize our school’s needs resulted in more than $35,000 worth of
support for new classroom materials and furnishings, a new sound system for the West Hall, computer software, additional document camera, and a complete new reading program for grades PreK-5th. We are extraordinarily grateful for the generosity of these families, especially the Gilliam and Amalfi families, for making our wishes a reality.
Pictured below is the 2013 St. Rose Football Team, who played their first season. Our football program was made possible through a generous donor in 2012.
Rewards Programs
Monetary donations made possible through the Box Tops
for Education and Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor program
allowed for upgrades to campus technology with total donations of $X,XXX from both combined. Target’s Take
Charge of Education program supported the St. Rose Tutoring program for a total of $XXX. Coke Rewards
points afforded us a new 32” LED TV to be used in our
ASAP program. With points earned through the Campbell’s Labels for Education we were able to get a new art
drying rack to be used in the PreK classrooms this year.
Please remember to register for our Kroger Community
Rewards and Target Take Charge of Education programs
and keep collecting those Box Tops, Campbell’s Soup
Labels and Coke Reward points!

All of us Together
As I close out my second and last year as President of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School
Parent Teacher Organization, I am happy to report that “Great Things Are STILL Happening
at St. Rose”. These great things are going on in our school every day, AND in the community
as a whole. It has been such an exciting time to be a part of the school with the addition of the
middle school and the new classrooms. We just graduated our second 8th grade class, and our
graduates have been accepted at several Houston area Catholic High Schools and some of the
most prestigious academic programs in HISD. Our middle school sports program now offers
football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and track. We will begin our 2014-2015
school year with a record 3 Pre-K classes and 2 classes of Kindergarten and 1st grade. The
goal is to see this growth continue until all of our grades have 2 classrooms full of students.
I want to say a BIG thank you to all of the parents and parishioners of St. Rose for supporting
our school through our Legacy of Faith, Annual Fund, Halloween Festival and Steps for Students fundraisers. The
school is supporting itself financially, but appreciates the support that the parish continues to give each year. We are so
excited to be growing our school from the bottom up with more students from the 77018 zip code and more parishioners enrolled than we have seen in the past several years. The faculty and staff of St. Rose are amazing, and they love
and support our students in all of their efforts inside and outside of the classroom. I really consider this team led by
Mrs. Stephen and Fr. Clint, the “Dream Team” of any Catholic School in Houston. We could never repay them for the
blood, sweat and tears they have put into making St. Rose of Lima Catholic School one of Houston’s premier Catholic
Schools and a model school for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Every day the students at St. Rose are being
loved, nurtured and formed mind, body and spirit, and it is a beautiful thing to witness. If you have never seen it, I suggest you stop by the West Hall any school day morning at 7:45 for the morning assembly and see all of the “Great
Things Happening at St. Rose” with your own eyes.
Thank you for letting me serve you and Go Cardinals!

Where are they now?
Congratulations to our 2014 8th grade graduating class. We are confident that St. Rose of Lima has helped to build
a strong academic and moral foundation for their success, and we hope to continue to see your faces around St.
Rose for years to come. We are proud to be sending graduates to the following schools:
Energy Institute High School
HSPVA (High School for the Performing and Visual Arts)
Incarnate Word Academy
Jersey Village High School
St. John’s School
St. Pius X Catholic High School
St. Thomas High School
Leaving a Legacy
As St. Rose of Lima continues with Phase 2 of
its Legacy of Faith Capital Campaign, the Legacy Continues, new buildings and renovations
make for additional changes for our school.
The Parish Hall, with its state-of-the-art audio/
video capabilities, has been an asset to the
school in giving us added space for banquets, receptions and meetings. The new property afforded our school
and its summer program, DECATS, with much needed storage. And lastly, with the expansion to the ECC in
the renovated 1948 school wing, St. Rose was able to bring in 70 new families into our Early Childhood Center. We cannot help but to see these new children as more future Cardinals!
We look forward to the continued progress of Phase 2 and the beginning of plans for Phase 3 to help continue
to grow our school and campus and build for a brighter future for our students.
Thank you to those school families and faculty who committed their support to the Legacy of Faith
