Quilcene gas
By Dillon Bettinger
D
o you live in Quilcene and find it difficult to
drive to Brinnon or Port Townsend? Well not
for long; the gas station at the Village Store is
opening back up!
The gas station will open again since it was last used
in 2008 to the advantage of many Quilcene citizens.
Their hours will be 8:00am-8:00pm. The store will be
run by Greg Brotherton and his wife, Stacey. Brotherton hopes this gas station is only the beginning of
something great.
This new opportunity will help many residents that
are living in Quilcene. It will also help with emergency
situations, because emergency vehicles responding to
a call need to fill up on gas. Also, there has been over
an average amount of people running out of gas. This
might help the students that go to Quilcene School
because they have even less time to drive to another
town to fill up. Overall, I believe that this gas station
will be very helpful for everyone.
Black Friday: Good or bad?
I
t’s that time of year again, the time for shopping,
getting fat, gift giving and receiving.
For this year’s Black Friday, the Wal-Mart store in
Poulsbo is putting out signs featuring their star items
and specials. What are these items? Well, we don’t
know. The person that we talked to said that they
probably won’t
know anything
until midnight
November 26.
This is causing a
lot of problems
for some employees though.
A lot of stores
will be opening
at midnight,
like Target, and
some people
are really bitter
about it. Like
By Avis Collins and Sara Gaby
Anthony Hardwick. In front of her whole family, he
proposed to his girlfriend during the holidays but
this year he will be working and will miss his normal
Thanksgiving family dinner. He started an online
petition called “Tell Target to Save Thanksgiving” and
by Tuesday, there were more than 80,000 signatures.
Hardwick stated that he started the petition in the
hope that Target would push the opening back so that
employees would have more time to spend with their
families for Thanksgiving.
On a better note, after calling a whole bunch of different stores, including Victoria’s Secret and The
Sportsman Warehouse, and finding out that only 1
or 2 stores knew what they are going to be featuring
for Black Friday, we decided to also ask what they are
going to do to promote their store and how it affects
them.

oys looking like fools with their pants on the
ground! This popular line was sung by Larry Platt,
an old man who tried out for American Idol.
Unfortunately, his message has fallen on deaf ears. Our
school is no exception, as a large percentage of the boys
wear their pants the same way.
The school dress code dictates that students are
not allowed to
wear pants below finger length but
this seems to
only apply to the female population. The
dress code is located on page
five
of the student handbook.
Apparently, none of the boys
seem to have to apply
this rule, as guys all
around school
wear their pants
extremely
low. The
last
thing
anyone
wants to
see when
they’re coming around the
corner is a guy’s
rear end sticking out,
shorts or no shorts.
Honestly, I don’t
know how this happened. I
can say with all of the powers of
truth
and justice that I never wear my
pants
like that. It’s gotten out of hand! The
dress code
should be more enforced on everyone
rather than
just the girls.

Meet coffee, the new energy drink!
H
igh school students are going on a coffee
craze!
Students in Quilcene School district
are purchasing a lot of coffee this year. Energy drinks
used to satisfy their thirst, but now they are choosing a steaming hot coffee instead. Teachers have
complained about energy drinks being on campus for
many years, but the students have found a new sneaky
way to boost their energy.
The Quilcene School District nutrition policy
says:
“The School Board in cooperation with Administration aim to encourage and promote healthy
habits and choices in the area of nutrition. Those students who have
“off campus” privileges are free to purchase items
to consume. Students may not bring those items,
which are not in keeping policy back on campus
during regular school hours. Examples: Candy,
high energy (high caffeinated drinks), etc. This
includes items like: candy bars, high sugar soda
drinks, Red Bull or similar high caffeinated energy drinks, ect. These items may be consumed
“off campus”, but are not to be brought on school
property during normal school operating hours.”
Why not coffee? Coffee has caffeine in it. Coffee may not have as much caffeine as an energy drink,
but it will give you energy. Students are able to buy
coffee across
the road from
the school
campus. The
popular coffee
company, Java
Classic, isn’t
your body’s
best friend.
This coffee is
like syrup and
has tons of
sugar. Carrie
Thompson, the
school secretary, said “I
found it shocking that the
coffee students
are buying
from Peninsula
Foods has that
By Nora Lomsdalen
much sugar!” The coffee that students buy comes
from a pot with a variety of flavors, or a traditional
coffee machine that pours coffee when you press a
button.
Either way, students
can make this drink very
unhealthy. Students are able
to add sugar to the coffee,
powdered creamer, chocolate powder, and other sweet
substances. Cindy pollard,
who started drinking coffee
when she was 25 years old,
said “I think students should
drink more water, including staff. Our water has no
chlorine, and I don’t like how students leave their coffee in the hallways or outside because it gets knocked
over and stains the concrete and carpet.” Coffee can
be good for your body in weird ways. It has caffeine, so
it raises your blood sugar. It can enhance your mood,
increase your energy, and keep you awake so you can
finish your homework. But many people don’t realize
what they’re doing to their body every time they take
a caffeinated sip. Caffeine is like a drug. It’s addictive
and it stimulates the central nervous system, causing
a rapid heartbeat. People who suddenly stop drinking
coffee can suffer with a withdrawal containing severe
headaches, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability.
Another bad thing young people do is replacing meals
with coffee because the caffeine speeds your metabolism and suppresses your appetite.
This is a problem. Choosing coffee over food
can lead to serious health problems like an eating
disorder. Phil Davis, Crossroads teacher, said “I think
we should treat high school students like adults, so I
favor them having coffee. It’s less harmful than a lot
of things.” Overall, many people have experienced it’s
hard to kick the caffeine habit and no one wants to
give up a frappuccino. To make this tasty treat healthier you need to drink it in moderation. Cut back daily
cups of coffee and choose decaf, add skim, or 2 percent milk so you can get calcium in your diet. Senior
Jade Senner, says “The coffee makes me feel like I’m
drinking boiling diabetes in a cup.” Another student
named Cole Owens, who is a junior, said “It makes me
want to sit in a corner and eat my sleeves.” Although
there are things wrong with coffee as well as energy
drinks, we should be able to consume energy drinks
on campus without being reprimanded.

Toonami:
I
Sweet, sweet victory!
n ’97 Cartoon Network introduced the world to
Toonami. Toonami premiered on March 17, 1997
with Moltar from Space Ghost Coast to Coast
as its first host at his control room at “Ghost Planet
Industries”. In ’99, CN changed hosts to a short robot
known simply as TOM (Toonami Operations Module). His opening for those watching was this:
“So it’s a brand new Toonami, but the mission
objective remains the same. My name is TOM. I’m
the new Moltar. Welcome aboard the Ghost Planet
spaceship Absolution, Cartoon Network’s first and
only broadcast & exploration vehicle; but I’ll give
you the tour later.
From this day
forward, she’s
responsible for all
Toonami transmissions. I’m taking
you guys into the
new millennium.
No big changes
now, same show,
same attitude, new
place to do it, new
guy to do it with.
I’m not going to
waste anymore
time, let’s get back
into it. Later.”
With this, Toonami
changed for everyone.
The first shows
that were shown on
Toonami were ThunderCats, Cartoon Roulette (which consisted of Space Ghost, Birdman and
the Galaxy Trio, The Herculoids, Mightor, Shazzan,
Teen Force, The Impossibles, the 1940s Superman,
Voltron, and The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest.
In ’98 the lineup changed to something different.
This was Cartoon Network’s
way of introducing kids in
America to anime. This new
lineup consisted of Robotech, Transformers: Beast
Wars, Sailor Moon, Dragon
Ball Z, and Superfriends.
By Charles Herbst
July 10, 1999 brought the end of Moltar and the
beginning of TOM. The first version of TOM was a
short, pudgy robot with his feet, hands, and head
attached to his body with thin black joints. TOM was
first brought to life by the voice acting talent of Sonny
Strait. TOM’s term as host was cut short in the September 2000 event “The Intruder.” In The Intruder,
a mysterious red blob invaded the Absolution. TOM
made a sacrifice in the end by trapping himself and
the blob in an elevator and destroyed it.
As the back story for TOM and the crew of the
Ghost Planet Space Ship Absolution unfolded, there
were several different versions of TOM. TOM was only
the first, after The Intruder, TOM was destroyed,
sacrificing himself but
had his memory matrix
placed into a new chassis by the ship’s AI, Sara.
This new version was
named TOM 2. Later
on, a space pirate named
Orcelot Rex tried to steal
Sara. TOM launched
himself into space to
catch Sara’s abductor, and
watched the Absolution’s
unfortunate end, got
destroyed but was put
back together and was
renamed as TOM 3. TOM
3 was a taller yet bulkier
version of TOM 2.
On September 20,
2008 after more than
eleven, the fourth and final TOM, ended a generation. The final words of the Toonami cartoon block
were these: “Well, this is the end, beautiful friends.
After more than 11 years, this is Toonami’s final broadcast. It’s been a lot of fun, and we’d like to thank each
and every one of you who made this journey with us.
Toonami wouldn’t have been anything without you.
Hopefully we’ve left you with some good memories.
So, until we meet again, stay gold. Bang.”

“If death meant just leaving the stage long
enough to change costume and come back
as a new character...would you slow down?
Or speed up?”
-Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters
T
here are many different types of books:
romance, mystery…and there’s some that
are just flat-out strange. Chuck Palahniuk combines nearly every aspect of every genre
into his books. Whether I’m reading about
dangerous fight clubs, an outbreak of rabies, or
a lullaby that kills people
whenever you sing it,
I’m always entertained
when reading a Palahniuk
book.
I first heard about
Chuck Palahniuk probably the same way everyone else did: Fight
Club. Written in 1996,
it was later made into a
film directed by David
Fincher, starring some
pretty big names like Brad Pitt (ring a bell?)
and Helena Bonham Carter. This story follows
a man named…well, he doesn’t have a name.
Though he is the main character, he’s more like
the narrator. The narrator is an insomniac, and
is constantly going to cancer support groups
simply so he knows that someone else is worse
off than him. This gives him peace of mind, and
he is able to sleep: until a woman named Marla
shows up knowing that he isn’t really dying of
cancer. Things get even worse when the narrator meets a man named Tyler Durden, forms an
underground “Fight Club”, and discovers that
Tyler isn’t really who he says he is.
Although I’ve loved every book I’ve ever read
by Chuck, my favorite is Lullaby. Published in
2002, it won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers
Association Award in 2003 and was nominated
for the Bram Stoker award for Best Novel in
2002.

Described as a “horror-satire”, this is the
story of Carl Streator. Being a newspaper
journalist, he is assigned to write about the
more frequent cases of SIDS (Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome), from which his own child
had succumbed to. Carl discovers that with
all the cases, there
was one common
theme: a children’s
book called Poems
and Rhymes Around
the World. With all
the deaths, it seems
that the children died
immediately after
their parent read
them a “culling song”,
or African chant. Mr.
Streator accidentally
memorizes the culling song, thus making him an unintentional
serial killer if the wrong person messes up
his day. Other people know about the culling
song, including Helen Hoover Boyle, a real
estate agent. Carl and Helen band together,
in a quest to destroy every copy of Poems
and Rhymes Around the World so that it
never kills another human being.
I think Chuck’s great! Most of his
books contain some material that probably
wouldn’t be suitable for younger generations,
but I personally think that he’s extremely
skilled at painting a picture for you just with
his words. He also gets extra brownie points
for living and hanging out in the beautiful
Pacific Northwest! Go now with your new
knowledge and read some Palahniuk!

Battlefield 3
B
attlefield 3 came out on the 25th of last month
following Battlefield Bad Co. 2. Battlefield
3 is made by Digital Illusions CE. Battlefield
3 was first revealed February 4th 2011 at E3 and was
the cover story of GameInformer March 2011 issue.
The Battlefield 3 campaign is the story of Staff Sergeant Henry “Black” Blackburn of the United States
Marine Corps of the 1st Recon. The campaign takes
place in the year 2014 where the PLR, which is a terrorist group, attacks
Paris and attempts to
attack New York.
Battlefield 3’s campaign
was enhanced by Frostbite 2.0. Frostbite 2.0
allows for more realistic destruction, more
realistic landscape, and
mantling! Mantling allows you to get from point
A to point B in a much faster rate by being able to
swing your legs over objects to get over them quicker.
Battlefield 3’s co-op consists of 6 missions. These
missions are thusly named Operation Exodus, Fire
from the Sky, Exfiltration, Hit and Run, Drop ‘em
like Liquid, and The Eleventh Hour. The missions
include Stealth, Objective based missions, and Defense.
Battlefield 3’s multiplayer consists of four classes
using two factions. The two factions that you play as
are the Russian Spetsnaz and the U.S. Marine Corps.
The four classes include Assault, Engineer, Suppotrt, and Recon. Each class has many different

Squads, added to multiplayer, are a new system
to bring your friends into the same game as you.
Squads can hold up to four people and the leader
of the squad can give commands to the other three
squad members telling them to flank or even plant
or defuse an objective.
Battlefield 3 has a small selection of game modes.
These game modes are Rush, Conquest, and Team
Deathmatch. There is also squad based modes for
each of the three game modes. Squad based modes
have smaller teams and requires more team work.
Friday: Be surprised
(Continued from pg. 10)
When we asked the manager at the Victoria’s Secret in Silverdale how Black Friday affects her store,
she said that that is the time of year when they get
the most applicants for jobs and when they hire the
most people. Because it opens so early in the morning, they get more shoppers and that means, they
bring in more money. She also said that they get
most of their business during Black Friday. They
also don’t handle their own advertising, the mall
handles everything.
Most stores will obviously be promoting their store
by purchasing ads in newspapers, commercials on
T.V. and giant colorful posters that draw your eyes
when you walk by. Then you’ll see the mile-long
lines trailing from the front of the doors. So stop by
any store on Black Friday and see what you get, you
might be surprised.
