Winter Greetings
from the Director....
Dear Residents and Patrons,
On behalf of the employees of the Community Services Department
I would like to invite you to participate in any number of the many
varied and diversified programs, classes and activities contained
within this guide. Staff has coordinated hundreds of different programs
and activities for your consideration and we hope and anticipate that
you’ll find something of interest provided for you here.
I would also like to invite you to attend the 2011 Luxe Interiors +
Design Maison de Luxe Designer Show House which will be held
December 2 – 22 at historic Greystone Estate. This event will transform the mansion into how it may have appeared in its original splendor as re-imagined by 26 of the nation’s leading home designers. As
a National Historic Landmark, Greystone Estate is the largest, most
majestic show house in the country as determined by the industry and
they are excited to partner with the City to showcase the newest trends
in home design by some of the world’s most recognized designers.
Fridays will feature lectures and book-signings by some of the participating designers. A portion of all proceeds will benefit the Friends of
Greystone, a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and
preservation of historic Greystone Estate. Please refer to additional
information contained within this guide for show times and prices.
Lastly, I’d like to encourage your use of the mansion in other ways that
may serve a particular personal need or interest. The City recently
completed the installation of new heating and air conditioning systems
that now allows the ability to control the climate in the mansion and
makes it a usable environment year-round. Along with the construction
of a new catering kitchen providing on-site food service capabilities,
the mansion is now available for rental opportunities for private business functions or social gatherings. Please contact staff for further
information should this unique opportunity be of interest to you.
Sincerely,
Steve Zoet, Director
Community Services Department

WHAT IS THE EMBRACE CIVILITY AWARD?
The Human Relations Commission promotes positive human
relations in all aspects of community life. We invite every
member of this community to support an environment where
civility, respect and responsible actions prevail. The Embrace
Civility Award was created to recognize people in our community who exemplify any or all of the following attributes that
contribute to civility as a way of life throughout the city:
• Act as a role model of positive civic behavior • Take a stand in support of respect and responsible actions
• Promote positive neighbor to neighbor relations
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE AN EMBRACE
CIVILITY AWARD?
The recipient may be of any age and must be one of the following: a resident of Beverly Hills; City staff member; or associated with a current business or organization that has operated in
Beverly Hills for a minimum of one year.
WHAT IS THE NOMINATION PROCESS? HOW
ARE AWARD SELECTIONS MADE?
The Nomination Form is available online at:
www.beverlyhills.org/embracecivilityaward;

Hills Library, 444 N. Rexford Drive.

Volunteer Opportunities
The Community Services Department is offering a variety of
ways to volunteer in the community. This is an opportunity to
meet new people and become involved in one or more of our
worthwhile projects or special activities. New volunteers are
needed to assist with the senior nutrition program by distributing
lunches, checking in seniors and collecting donations.
We are recruiting for the upcoming Woofstock (March 11)
and the Concours D’Elegance (May 6) and the Beverly Hills
Art Show - Affaire in the Gardens (May 19 & 20). These are
great fun events for the whole family to get involved.
Volunteering is a great way to share your skills, learn new
skills or help those in need. Call the City of Beverly Hills
Volunteer Program at 310.285.6843 and we will help you
find the right match whether it’s volunteering for a day, a
week, or just for special events. You decide!
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Greystone’s value to architectural and California history is as unique as it is impressive. It is a pastoral
public park open to the public most days of the year, and can spark the imagination, pique the curiosity and
intrigue the visitor during their time spent at the Mansion and beyond.
The Friends of Greystone work tirelessly to honor the significant architectural contribution that Greystone
Mansion makes as one of the few great houses of the Gilded Age of American architecture to survive relatively intact in Southern California. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Greystone Mansion
is considered to be among California’s most luxurious residences south of Hearst Castle.
The Friends of Greystone is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization founded to preserve and enhance Greystone
Mansion, as well as promote ongoing activities for the enjoyment and enrichment of the public.
