Project Details
Applied Water Management (AWM), a
subsidiary of American Water Enterprises,
the operations and maintenance arm of
American Water, designed, built and operates
the membrane wastewater recycling facilities
at this complex, the first commercial water
reuse project permitted in Massachusetts.
Wastewater treatment is provided for a
130-store outlet center, an office complex,
hotel, movie theater and 450-seat restaurant.
The treatment facility for the first phase of
the project, the 575,000-square-foot mall
completed in 1997, overcame land constraints
by using a compact treatment plant layout
measuring only 34 by 96 feet and minimized
impacts on a nearby environmentally sensitive
wetlands area with an onsite disposal system
that overcame the lack of municipal sewers
in this section of Wrentham.
The recycled water is used for flushing with
the excess sent to sub-surface recharge beds.
The design reduced the overall expected
cost of the plant by $1 million. The
initial project’s success led to AWM’s
commissioning to expand the facility to
handle the additional facilities. The
expansion added another 32 by 72 feet
to the original facility and is located next to
the mall’s parking areas. AWM has operated
and maintained the plant continuously since
September 1997.
Facility Operations
The wastewater facility uses a trash trap,
an equalization chamber, a series of aerobic
digestion chambers, and membrane filtration
to separate solids from liquids.

The water is further cleaned by carbon
absorption and disinfected using ultraviolet
light and ozone. The automation and controls
were designed in-house by AWM and used a
sophisticated 24-channel auto dialer system
that calls the plant operator when operations
begin to exceed preset norms.
Treated effluent not used to flush toilets in
the complex is recharged into groundwater
using subsurface recharge beds. The use
of both UV and ozone technologies was
done to meet Massachusetts Department
of Environmental Protection requirements
for wastewater reuse that calls for extra
disinfection. Recycled water meets all
Massachusetts and EPA requirements for
reuse and groundwater recharge.
The treatment requirements for recharge
beds is a biological oxygen demand (BOD5)
of <30 milligrams per liter (mg/l), total
suspended solids (TSS) of <30mg/l, total
nitrogen of <10mg/l, and pH of 6 to 9.
For reuse, the treated water meets the
requirements of a BOD5 of <30mg/l, TSS
of <10mg/l, total nitrogen of <10mg/l,
fecal coliform of <100 organisms per 100
milliliters, turbidity of <5 Nephelometric
turbidity units, and pH of 6 to 9.
