munity multicultural family of St. Raymond-Our
Lady of Good Counsel
parish of Detroit. We share
the love of Jesus by welcoming and serving friends
and strangers, young and
old, rich and poor. We are
called to be the light of
Christ in our neighborhood,
strengthened by prayer and
worship, especially the
Eucharist.
We see ourselves as a
rock in our community. We
are dedicated to grow in
unity with God and one
another. We invite all to
join with their time, talents
and treasures in the journey
toward building God’s kingdom. Under the guidance of
the Holy Spirit, we are
dedicated to keep a
Catholic presence in our
neighborhood.

Pastoral Reflections
“I know them and they follow me.”
When Jesus uses the image of sheep to describe those in his care, he is describing a
situation to which his listeners can easily
relate. It is a well-used image from the Old
Testament to describe the people entrusted
to the care of their leaders. The priests,
prophets and kings failed in their responsibilities to such an extent that God the Father took back the flock into his personal
care, and now they are entrusted to Jesus,
the good shepherd. Sheep are not pampered and coddled, shampooed and deodorised. They are smelly, frisky, freedomloving and get themselves into all sorts of
difficult and often life-threatening situations. They need a shepherd to look after
them, to guide them and keep them safe.
Just as parents recognise the different cries
of their own children, so the good shepherd listens for the cry of his sheep. And
just as children recognise the voice of their
parents, so those who belong to Jesus listen
for his voice and follow him.
From the book of the Apocalypse, we learn
that the good shepherd so identified with
the sheep of his flock that he became the
Lamb that was slain, the one who laid
down his life for his sheep and who now
After Mass today, members of our Christian Service
Commission are asking you to sign letters which will be
mailed to our Senators to pass legislation to eliminate
hunger by 2030. This is the goal of Bread for the World,
an interdenominational group formed to accomplish this.

leads his flock to springs of
water around the throne of
God, in heaven.
Perhaps we can gather from
what we have already said
that God’s house as described
by Jesus is not some manyroomed country mansion,
good to look at but impossible to live in. It
is, perhaps, more of a farmyard, which
might be difficult to live in but is bursting
with life in all its complexity. Speaking to
priests during Holy Week 2013, Pope
Francis urged them to be close to those
who are vulnerable and marginalised, and
to be “shepherds living with the smell of
the sheep”. Later that year in his apostolic
exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, “The Joy
of the Gospel”, Pope Francis used the
same words as he called on the Church to
be an evangelising community by getting
involved in people’s daily lives. Evangelisers, he says, thus take on “the smell of the
sheep”. Pope Francis doesn’t see the
Church as a museum to be visited, holding
the treasures of a bygone age. The Church
is a community of people who care about
the world in which we live. They care
about the people among whom we live,
especially those who are most in need.

Treasures from our Tradition
Just as the early church consecrated women living
alone in the world, today that consecration is available
to women who take solemn vows as cloistered nuns
(different from religious sisters), women who follow a
way of life in communities called “secular institutes,”
and laywomen. Oddly, the ritual is not permitted for
religious sisters. The prayers talk about the woman’s
self-gift to Christ, and her self-gift to the Church. Up
until recent years, this was a solemn ceremony performed only for cloistered nuns under certain circumstances. In its new form, we have a ritual that revives
a very ancient and little-known way of life. Today, a
woman can live independently at home, without association with any religious sisterhood or institute, yet
be consecrated to holiness and service. Normally, a
ring and/or a veil may be given in the liturgy of consecration. It is a rite very different from religious profession, where the sister makes promises or vows, and
is rather an expression of approval and blessing for a
way of life already embraced. Unlike ancient times,
which valued actual virginity, the new rite may be
celebrated for anyone provided there has never been a
marriage and the woman has always lived a virtuous
life. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Theology on Tap is a great opportunity for young
Catholic adults to meet in a comfortable setting to explore our faith and how it affects our lives.
Renew International’s Theology on Tap is a licensed
program that encourages the exploration of faith
amongst young adults, ages 18-35, in a setting that is
meant to be non-threatening and open to dialogue. It
must also be known that since the Church’s call for
the New Evangelization, Theology on Tap has become
a vehicle for reaching out to those who are not yet
disciples in the "new areopogi" or to engage those
who may feel uncomfortable in traditional Church settings. For more information call: 313-237-4680 or go

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Good Shepherd Sunday: World Day of
Prayer for Vocations
This Sunday celebrates Jesus
as “the Good Shepherd.” When announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis focused on Jesus’
“lost sheep” parable in Luke. “[Who] among you,”
Jesus asks, “having a hundred sheep and losing one of
them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and
go after the lost one until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4). A
reasonable answer? “No responsible shepherd who
wants to keep the job!” Yet Jesus considers one lost
person supremely important and suggests blaming the
shepherd. The sheep didn’t “go astray,” the shepherd
“lost” it. Thus, “when he does find it, he sets it on his
shoulders with great joy” (15:5). That tender image of
Jesus adorns the simple cross Pope Francis has always
worn, the Good Shepherd gently carrying the lost sheep
home on his shoulders. During this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, may we, who once were lost ourselves but now
are found, join Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently
carrying home at least one precious lamb.

Easing eczema
• Stay away from triggers, such
as scented soaps or perfumes.
• Use a moisturizer, especially
after taking a shower or bath.
• Pat the skin dry after bathing,
don’t rub.
• Soothe itchy skin with a cold
compress.
• Use a humidifier when the
weather is dry or cold.
• Avoid extreme temperatures.
• Choose clothing made from
cotton or cotton blend fabrics.

Eczema can be linked to allergies
Allergies do more than make a person sneeze
and cough. They have also been associated with
a chronic, itchy skin rash.
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition with symptoms including dry, itchy skin
and rashes behind the knees, on the hands and
feet, inside the elbows, and on the face. Symptoms might change over time, as the rash flares
up and then improves.
Eczema is most common in babies and children, and a child with parents who have seasonal allergies is more likely to develop the condition. In addition, a child with
eczema is more likely to develop food allergies, asthma, and hay fever.
Eczema can improve or go away as a child grows older, and more than half of
children outgrow it by their teenage years. However, for some, the condition
persists into adulthood.
Certain irritants (such as soaps, cleaners, perfumes, and cigarette smoke) and
allergens (including dust mites, mold, and pollen) can make eczema worse. A person may get contact eczema when the skin touches an allergy-causing substance.
Allergy fast facts
• If a parent has allergies, a
child has a 33 percent
chance of developing them. If
both parents have allergies,
the child has a 70 percent
chance.
• An allergy can develop at any
time during a person’s life.
• A person might be able to
tolerate a small exposure to an
allergen, but react to a more
significant exposure.
• Children may outgrow an allergy. Some people have
fewer allergy symptoms after
middle age.
• A person with a food allergy
might also be allergic to
similar proteins found
elsewhere. For example,
someone who is allergic to
bananas may also be allergic
to ragweed.
The cause of eczema is not known, although it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors play a role.
When making a diagnosis, a doctor may ask about a family history of allergies, whether you have hay fever or
asthma, whether you have been exposed to a skin irritant, or if certain foods cause skin flare-ups.
While there is no test to check for eczema, your doctor may recommend you be tested for allergies by a dermatologist or allergist.
