Electric Fencing
With the weather starting to warm up and dry out, this is an
ideal time to start thinking about your earthing stake.
The quality of your earthing stake is essential to the
effectiveness of your electric fencing rig. This works by
allowing the electricity to go from the animal on contact,
then through the ground and to the energiser to create a
complete circuit (shown in the diagram).
Not having a good enough connection from the earthing
stake is usually caused by the ground being too dry or using
a rusty stake; as the rust does not conduct as effectively.
Having a poor earthing stake will decrease the energy put
down the rig, less joules of power and the distance the
energy travels will be reduced. It will also decrease the life
span of the energiser and your 12v battery.
A chain of earthing stakes can be used in severe situations
to improve the conductivity.
