London Has Fallen
Prepare for Bloody Hell
In the spring of 2013, Millenium Films released Antoine
Fuqua’s action thriller Olympus Has Fallen. The film
centered on disgraced Secret Service Agent Mike
Banning (Gerard Butler) as he attempted to singlemindedly foil a terrorist attack on White House.
Many likened the film to Die Hard, and some said it
was even better than the Bruce Willis blockbuster.
Little surprise, then, that the sequel to that worldwide
smash hit is here.
The cunningly scripted story leaves you with very little
time to catch your breath as the stand off between
hero and villain explodes into a lethal game.
PVR MOVIES FIRST
The Plot: After the British Prime Minister passes
away, his funeral becomes a target of a terrorist
organization to destroy some of the world’s most
powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and
unleash a terrifying vision of the future. The only
hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of the
President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart) and

London Has fallen,
we’ve taken the action
to a whole new level.
It’s a fun franchise.
You get to do a lot of
really badass action, but
the film’s got its tongue
firmly in cheek
- Gerard Butler
Will he beat John McLane’s record-breaking box office
run? Well, the film has a lot going for it! A peppery
secret service agent seeing off a battery of enemies in
a flurry of punching, gunplay and salty quips—what’s
not to love?
Top Thrills: A dramatic helicopter-landing in the
courtyard of Somerset House, one of London’s stateliest
and most stunning buildings.
his formidable Secret Service head (Gerard Butler),
and an English MI-6 agent (Charlotte Riley) who
rightly trusts no one.
The Director: This is Babak Najafi’s English-language
feature debut after helming the Swedish superhit
Snabba Cash, which won him the Best Debut Award
at the Berlin Film Festival.
Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart running around amidst
explosions while the historic monuments of London
crumble down around them to the eerie, minor-keyed
tune of “London Bridge Is Falling Down”.
The Hero: This breathless sequel is being billed
Butler’s very own Die Hard. The actor reveals that the
film took everything out of him. “There were times
when we shot for 41 hours straight!” he says, sotto
voce. By the end of it, he was limping, his hip was
twisted, and he had taken an injection in his foot.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH
This cunningly scripted sequence from the trailer
reveals exactly what the world has been waiting for:
an explosive, action-packed stand-off between two of
the greatest superheroes ever: Batman & Superman.
The idea of a Batman/Superman movie had been
floating around for so long that a scene in Will Smith
starrer I Am Legend, jokingly suggests the movie to
release only after mankind’s has been wiped out from
liked
the fact that Ben
was 6’ 4” and taller
than Henry. I wanted
Superman to have to feel
like he was looking up
to Batman despite being
so much stronger.
– Zack Snyder, Director
PVR MOVIES FIRST
PAGE 9
Earth. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait till the end of
the world to witness the movie that pits two bona fide
icons against each other.
The year’s most anticipated movie, Zack Snyder’s
magnum opus stars Ben Affleck as Batman, with
Henry Cavill reprising his role of Superman. Dubbed
by supervillain Lex Luthor as “The greatest gladiator
match in the history of the world,” it is no surprise
that the movie is shaping up to be Hollywood’s
biggest superhero slugfest yet.
The Plot: The movie follows the events of 2013’s Man
of Steel, where Superman’s titanic struggle against
General Zod leaves Metropolis razed to the ground.
While he remains an emblem of hope for many, a
growing number of people consider Superman a
threat to humanity, seeking justice for the chaos he
has brought to Earth.
BEN AFFLECK AS BATMAN
The new version of the Caped Crusader would be a
veteran hero, and he has been described as “tired,
weary and seasoned.” He seems to have already
gotten rid of crime in Gotham City and gone into semiretirement. But, Superman’s actions in Metropolis
leave him deeply affected with a desire for revenge
brewing up.
The destruction of the Wayne Financial building has
made Bruce Wayne fear for the future of the world
with such a reckless power left ungoverned, and so he
dons his mask and cape to right Superman’s wrongs.
The rivalry between them is furious, fuelled by
bitterness and vengeance, and nothing can dissuade
them from waging this war. However, a dark new
threat is arising: one who has a power greater than
either of them to endanger the world and cause
total destruction.
Script and Direction: Director Zack Snyder, who
previously helmed the super-successful Man of
Steel will be delivering Batman v Superman: Dawn of
Justice. David Goyer wrote the original drafts of the
screenplay which was re-written by Academy Award
winning screenwriter Chris Terrio to create a new tier
of cinematic experience in the superhero universe.
JESSE EISENBERG AS LEX LUTHOR
Every great hero needs a great villain, doesn’t he?
And this movie has not one but two of the greatest
ever. Enter Lex Luthor. The billionaire industrialist
has been reframed a billionaire whiz-kid tech genius.
Little has been revealed of what Lex Luthor’s role in
this film will be outside of the obvious: he’ll be up to
no good.
HENRY CAVILL AS SUPERMAN
Henry Cavill returns to play Clark Kent/Superman,
continuing to learn how to live up to his destiny,
while also trying to find his place on Earth. It doesn’t
look like he’s extremely uncomfortable with either his
idolisation or the incredible amount of hate for him
swelling in society—though it does seem like he has
some kind of grudge against the “bat vigilante.”

TRIVIA
01
Ben Affleck asked Christian Bale for any advice
he could give about playing Batman. Bale told
him to “make sure you can piss in that suit.”
Snyder later confirmed that they did indeed
decide to build a zipper into the Batsuit to
avoid having to remove the whole thing should
Ben decide he needed a bathroom break!
02
The executives at Warner Bros were reportedly
so impressed with the rough cut that they not
only gave the film a standing ovation, but also
began negotiating a deal with Ben Affleck to
have him make three solo Batman movies.
03
This is the first movie featuring Wonder
Woman since the character’s creation in 1941.
04
Gal Gadot practiced Kung Fu, kick boxing,
sword fight, jujitsu and capoeira as part
of her physical preparation for the role of
Wonder Woman.
05
06
Hans Zimmer composed a separate theme
for each superhero in this film (except for
Batman), which is set to be featured in
The Justice League Part One and in each
superhero’s standalone movie as well.
This will be the tenth time Batman has been
portrayed since 1943. Superman, on the
other hand, has been portrayed sixteen times
since 1939.

calculated moves to kill almost anyone who crosses his path,
before limping away the victor.
Serial killer John Doe murders his victims according to the seven
deadly sins, and he’s pursued by the archetypal hotshot rookie cop
and his smarter, almost-retired partner. But this manipulative killer
turns himself in, to complete his sinister plot by goading the young

the Empire comes out swinging and is the clear winner here:
Han’s frozen in carbonite, Vader chops off Luke’s hand, and the

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
BRUCE WILLIS
It’s hard to imagine the modern Hollywood action movie
being the big, bawdy blockbuster it is without Bruce Willis’
influence. The Emmy and Golden Globe-award winning actor
made his first foray on TV with Moonlighting but his fame
really grew with films such as Die Hard, Armageddon, The
Sixth Sense and The Expendables.
You can’t fight a woman who uses shame and shock therapy
as weapons, can you? Randle McMurphy is in the loony bin
to sidestep prison, but what he gets is a battle of wills with an
unfeeling nurse—which he loses, despite his best efforts. You
want to know he lost? One word: Lobotomy. You never win when
they get part of your brain.
USUAL SUSPECTS (1995)
Cast: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin
Direction: Bryan Singer
The Bad Guy: Keyser Söze
Yet another movie with Kevin Spacey as a kickass villain.
Throughout this entire mind-bending crime mystery, crippled
criminal Roger “Verbal” Kint is telling his complicated yet highly
detailed story to agent Dave Kujan. The entire story hinges around
a mysterious mastermind known as Keyser Soze—a man as
enigmatic as he is dangerous. But, in one of the most infamous
PVR MOVIES FIRST
Here are 5 fun facts about the actor who celebrates his
birthday on March 19.
1. Wears his watch upside down with the face on the inside
of his hand. This is also visible in many movies he has done
(Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), Mercury Rising (1998),
etc.) where they haven’t requested him to flip it over.
2. His album “The Return of Bruno” became a surprise seller
after the single “Respect Yourself” hit # 5 in early 1987.
3. Is left-handed and this is evident in most of his films. In
The Sixth Sense (1999), he learned to write with his right
hand so it wouldn’t be so easily noticeable that his character
wasn’t wearing his wedding ring.
4. He was the first star to act in a video game by lending
his voice and body movement for Trey Kincaide in action
game “Apocalypse.”
5. In 1996, he was the executive producer of the cartoon
‘Bruno the Kid’ which featured a CGI representation of
himself.

SACHIN KRISHN
GUEST INTERVIEW
One honest police officer battling corrupt forces
both outside and within the system. Harking
back to its gale-force prequel, Jai Gangaajal
promises to pack an even stronger punch. The
movie’s acclaimed cinematographer Sachin
Krishn takes us behind the scenes:
How long and where did you shoot the film?
This is your sixth team-up with
Prakash Jha...
From Rajneeti to Satyagrah and now Jai
Gangaajal, Prakash Jha films feature massive
crowd scenes. This makes them both thrilling
and challenging to shoot. In this film there is a
sequence where Priyanka Chopra bashes up some
goons in the middle of a packed marketplace. With
a star of her stature, it was quite a challenge to
manage the surging crowds there. And it was a
race against time, since we had to shoot the scene
before sunset!
Yes, and it has been a pleasure all through.
While all the movies we have done together
addressed real issues, Jai Gangaajal is perhaps
Jha’s darkest film yet. It asks some very serious
questions about land grabbing and farmer
suicides. It is a story that will restore peoples’
dwindling faith in the police force.
How did you interpret Jai Gangaajal,
and how did your vision align with
the director’s?
The film inhabits a stark world, whose portrayal
meant creating a colour palette that echoed its
bleakness. We had lengthy discussions before
shooting the first frame, and you will see how
the dark tones lend an edge to the grim subject
of the film.

Like all Prakash Jha movies, Jai Gangaajal was also
shot in one go, on a 55-day schedule. The major
part of the film was shot in Bhopal, which is by now
home ground for most of the director’s films.
The most challenging sequences to shoot?
What was it like to shoot with the
director as an actor?
Prakash Jha plays a key character role in Jai
Gangaajal. During the course of the shoot, I saw
him evolve from a jittery newcomer to a seasoned
actor. He is an inspiration—someone who
demonstrates that age is just a number; that it is
never too late to play a new role in life.

THE LIFE OF A LEGEND:
Alfred Hitchcock

ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA

ALFRED HITCHCOCK
ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA
The name Hitchcock alone stands as a
definition of a certain kind of cinema. More
books have been written about him than
any other filmmaker. Hollywood’s most
innovative and influential director ever,
Alfred Hitchcock created spine-tingling
masterpieces that have been imitated but
never equalled. There will, quite simply,
never be another Master of Suspense.
His Films: Alfred Hitchcock directed 53 films over
50 years, and at least 20 of these are acknowledged
masterpieces.
Early Life: Hitchcock grew up in London’s East
End, the notorious neighbourhood where Jack the
Ripper lurked. Even with two siblings, he was a
lonely child—his father was a stern disciplinarian,
and mother overly protective.
The 1950s were Hitchcock’s most fertile decade,
spawning film after stunning film: Strangers On A
Train, Rear Window, Vertigo, North By Northwest,
Psycho and The Birds.
Hitchcock attended St. Ignatius College, then took
a degree in marine engineering. By 1916, young
Alfred’s creative side overtook his mechanical one,
and he enrolled at the University of London for
drawing and design classes.
His talent helped him land a spot designing title
cards for silent films. After cutting his teeth on
British movie sets, he crossed the Atlantic in 1939
to make a career in Hollywood.
PVR MOVIES FIRST
After making a string of flop silent films, Hitchcock
directed the 1927 superhit The Lodger: A Story of
the London Fog, featuring a serial killer similar to
Jack the Ripper.
His film Blackmail (1929) was the first British
‘talkie,’ and is widely considered as one of his best.
Hitchcock’s signature cinematic style included his
use of odd, skewed angles, wide sweeping shots,
tight close-ups, long sequences with no dialogue,
his spectacular use of shadows, the ever popular
Hitchcock cameo, the look and style of his leading
ladies, and the circular shots that panned around
the actors, particularly in romantic scenes.
The Director at the Oscars
Though Hitchcock was knighted by Queen
Elizabeth II and received numerous honours,

days and 70 camera setups to shoot. Although
chocolate syrup was used for blood in Psycho’s
shower sequence, the heroine, Janet Leigh, was
so scared she took only tub baths for the rest of
her life.
• Hitchcock’s father once sent him to the
local police station with a note saying he
had been misbehaving. The sergeant was
asked to lock him up for a few minutes. Ever
after, Hitchcock carried a fear of enclosed
spaces and wrongful imprisonment, both of
which figured in his work.
• Hitchcock was a gourmet with one of the
finest wine cellars in California. He enjoyed
good cigars, dined every Thursday at
Chasen’s and always wore dark suits, white
shirts and ties.
QUICK FACTS
though the Academy Award for Best Director
always eluded him. He was nominated for the
prize five times but remained, in his own words,
“always a bridesmaid, never a bride.” When he
finally received an honorary Lifetime Achievement
Oscar in 1967, he gave one of the shortest
acceptance speeches in the ceremony’s history:
“Thank you…very much indeed.”
Iconic Scene: Hitchcock’s most famous film is best
known for the scenein which Janet Leigh is stabbed
to death during her shower. The sequence lasted
only 45 seconds on screen, but required seven

HISTORY
Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of
1961, this is among history’s most inspiring films. One of
America’s most beloved authors, Lee died last month, but
her work will forever serve as a shining beacon for heroism
and justice against racism.
The Plot: Atticus Finch is a lawyer in the fictional town of
Maycomb, a racially divided early 1930s Alabama town,
modelled after Monroeville where Harper Lee grew up.
Finch agrees to defend a young black man who is accused of
raping a white woman. Many of the townspeople try to get
Atticus to pull out of the trial, but he decides to go ahead.
Wow Factor: More than five decades after its release, the
film is ranked among the top 10 American films ever made.

Gregory Peck’s performance as Atticus Finch won him
the Oscar for Best Actor and became the highlight of his
illustrious career.
Good to Know:
• Atticus Finch is modelled on Harper Lee’s own
father, an Alabama legislator who defended a black
client in 1923.
• Finch was Harper Lee’s mother’s maiden name.
• Robert Duvall made his debut with this film—and
it was a silent part. The actor stayed out of the sun
for six weeks and dyed his hair blond to get into
character as Boo Radley, who spends much of his life
as a recluse.
