•
Ultra quiet opto-resistive switching
•
Transformer isolated to eliminate hum
•
Optional JR2 remote footswitch
The Radial JX42 is a compact guitar and amp
switcher made to handle up to four guitars and
two amps simultaneously. Designed for concert
touring, the JX42 begins with four radio-style
switches that immediately turn the previous
channel off when the new channel is selected.
These are complemented with LED’s for visual
feedback on dark stages. To ensure the quietest
switching possible, opto-resistive couplers are
employed to eliminate any popping that could
occur.
Inside, the JX42’s 100% discrete
class-A buffering circuit ensures that fidelity is
maintained. Each input channel also sports a
recessed dual-function potentiometer that can
be assigned as either a level control to match
wireless systems or be set to Drag control for
precise load correction when using passive
magnetic pickups. There are two main stage
amp outputs, with the B-output transformer
isolated to eliminate hum and buzz caused by
ground loops. Amp selection occurs via a front
panel AB selector or by connecting the optional
JR2 remote footswitch. These features make the
JX42 a great choice for stages and studios alike.
“The Bassbone OD is a game changer. Finally
there is a bass overdrive that doesn’t lose

Headload™ Low Stage Volume, Great Sound
Guitar amp load box with built-in Radial JDX and Phazer™
The Headload is a combination load box and
attenuator that is capable of handling up to
130 watts RMS of continuous power and peaks
of 180 watts. Inserted between the head and
cabinet, it allows the guitar amp to be driven
hard while reducing the output level to reduce
the sound pressure on stage or provide the
means for quiet recording in the studio. This
enables the artist to optimize the tone from the
guitar amplifier without having to perform at
ear-blistering levels. In addition to the 8 ohm
speaker cabinet outputs, the Headload comes
with a built-in Radial JDX direct box. This is
coupled with a 6-position voicing switch that
lets you choose the desired amp and cabinet
emulation. This is supplemented with a 2-band
EQ for fine tuning or used to eliminate overly
harsh harmonics that are produced by some
amplifiers.
For engineers who prefer to combine
a microphone with a direct feed, the Headload
has also been outfitted with a Radial Phazer phase alignment tool. This enables the stage
tech to align the direct feed with the mic and
dial-in the ideal mix on stage. The Headload
is made in Canada from 14 gauge steel and is
supported with a 3 year transferable warranty.

Deane Jensen 1942 - 1989 Jensen with two NEW solutions
Born in Annapolis, Maryland in
1942. Deane grew up in Princeton,
New Jersey. His Norwegian father,
Dr. Arthur S. Jensen, was a physicist
who earned his Ph.D. at Univ. of Penn
in 1941. He became an electronicimaging expert and was awarded 25
patents, taught physics at the U.S.
Naval Academy, and later worked for RCA Laboratories and
the Westinghouse Defense and Electronic Center. Deane said
he remembered Albert Einstein coming to their home to visit
his father.
Following his father’s footsteps, Deane majored
in physics and electrical engineering at the University of
Pennsylvania. In September 1968, Deane joined Quad Eight
Sound as a systems engineer, becoming the VP of engineering
in 1971. His accumulated experience in the recording industry
told Deane that audio transformers often were the root
cause of ‘bad sounding’ mixing boards and audio systems.
He decided to embark on a quest to fix the shortcomings,
starting with transformers.
Deane became obsessed with how audio
transformers interacted with system electronics and started
basic research to solve the ‘bad sounding’ problems. Some of
his earliest designs from the 1970’s include the JT-DBE direct
box transformer and JT-MBC mic splitting transformer which
set the standard for sound

The Iso-Max SP-2SX is a two channel speaker to line level converter that lets you
convert the high power signal from an audio amplifier output to a +4 dB (nominal)
balanced line level for further processing or signal distribution.
The design begins with a rugged flanged enclosure that comes standard
with gold plated XLRs and a removable screw-down barrier strip for easy installation
in NEMA enclosures and 19” racks. Plug and play easy to use, this passive interface
does not require any power to work. Inside are two Jensen high performance
transformers that isolate the output to eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground
loops while they eliminate issues with ‘bridged’ and ‘class D‘ power amp outputs. A
series of input pad DIP switches let you select the range to suit various power amps
for at 25 W, 75 W, 250 W, or 750 W max in to 8 Ω. All types of amplifiers may be
used including 25 V and 70 V line driver types.
Once connected, the SP-2SX is able to withstand signal levels to +19 dBu
at 20 Hz without introducing distortion, phase shift or artifact of any kind. This
opens the door to expand existing systems without having to run additional line
level signals throughout a facility.
CI-RJ2R
Two channel RCA to CAT-5 extender
quality and signal handling
and are still in use today. He
later developed an integrated op-amp called the 990 which
was described and published in the AES Journal in 1979.
The amplifier set new standards for its combination of low
noise, low distortion, slew rate, stability, and high output
drive capabilities. When Deane published the circuit, he
intentionally made the patent public domain, showing his
special dedication to furthering the state of the art.
After Deane’s passing in 1989, Bill Whitlock a friend and former engineer at Quad Eight - acquired
the company and continued the tradition with further
refinements in production uniformity and long-term
reliability. Bill introduced the ISO-MAX® range of plug & play
audio and video isolators to the world, enabling end users
to solve hum and buzz problems with ready-made Jensenequipped solutions.
Radial’s president and owner Peter Janis began his
relationship with Jensen in 1992 as the Canadian distributor
and over the years, became Jensen’s largest customer. To
celebrate Bill’s 70th birthday, Peter purchased the company
from Whitlock. Jensen will continue to manufacture
transformers in Chatsworth, California and the company
is currently researching new ways to improve designs
and develop new technologies to bridge the benefits of
transformer isolation with today’s recording, broadcast and
production needs. The Jensen legacy will continue.

The CI-RJ2R is a two channel passive line driver that lets you extend unbalanced
signals to 100 meters (350’) using standard CAT-5 or CAT-6 balanced twisted pair
Ethernet cable.
Sold as a ‘transmit and receive’ set, the design begins with two rugged
flanged steel enclosures for easy mounting under a desk or inside a rack or NEMA
enclosure. Each end is equipped with RCA inputs and outputs with a standard
Ethernet RJ45 type connector in between. One merely connects the source and
destination devices using the RCAs and bridges the two units using off the shelf
CAT-5 or CAT-6 cable. This enables the system designer to employ pre-wired
network cable to run analog audio throughout a facility without having to fish
new wires.
Inside the receiver module are two Jensen high performance
transformers that are able to withstand signal levels to +19 dBv at 20 Hz without
any discernible distortion. These provide galvanic isolation between the input
and output to eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops, rejecting noise
by as much as 124 dB.

The Hafler PH50 is a high performance phono
preamp for moving magnet (dynamic) cartridges
that incorporates a well defined RIAA curve
to preserve and transmit the original program
material with minimal coloration. Particular
attention has been applied to reducing noise, a
problem common to the 33 RPM recording chain,
resulting in a -82dB noise floor with greater than
91dB of dynamic range and less than 0.002%
distortion.
The Hafler PH60 is a high performance phono
preamp for moving coil cartridges that combines
a class-A transformerless head-amp design with a
well defined RIAA curve to preserve and transmit
the original program material with minimal
coloration. Due to the extremely low signal level
produced by moving coils, particular attention has
been applied to reducing noise while retaining
the purity of the signal path to address the most
demanding audiophiles.
Proudly made in North America, the Hafler PH34
and PH44 SUTs are passive devices that employ
ultra high performance Jensen Transformers to
boost the low-level signal produced by a moving
coil cartridge by as much as 31dB without any
amplification or the associated noise that they
produce. Jensen wrote the book on transformer
technology and for over 40 years has gained the
accolades of being the world’s most respected and
revered audio transformer manufacturer.
The Hafler HA15 is a 100% discrete headphone
amplifier that has been meticulously designed
to produce Hafler’s legendary sound quality with
sufficient gain to power any type of headphone.
A unique ‘focus’ control may be engaged that
brings the stereo image to the center to better
approximate the feel as if listening to loudspeakers
in a typical ambient space.
Continued from Page 1
As the Tube Head will likely find its way into
more discerning studios, a number of features
have been added to address this market. These
include balanced line inputs for easy connection
to pro-audio workstations and mixing consoles,
dual headphone outputs to enable the artist and
engineer to ‘share’ the listening experience when
evaluating the mix and throughputs that enable
the more creative engineer to use the tube drive
circuit to add tube character to tracks.
When it comes to high-fidelity
audio equipment, David Hafler
is often described as the man
who led the charge. In 1950,
David Hafler and Herb Keroes
started a Philadelphia-based
company called Acrosound in
order to build and sell audioquality output transformers,
primarily for home electronics hobbyists. In 1954, David
Hafler and Herb Keroes parted company. That same
year, Hafler met an audio engineer named Ed Laurent,
who had designed a novel single-tube driver circuit for a
power amplifier. In 1955, the two men founded the Dyna
Company which later became Dynaco with the intention
of not only producing transformers, but high-quality
audio circuitry.
Dynaco’s first product was the Mk. II 50 watt
power amplifier. Available as a kit or preassembled unit,
the Mk. II was
sold for several
years until its
replacement
in 1956 by the
Mk. III amplifier
which produced
60
watts.
Dynaco is best
remembered
by the ST-70 that was launched in 1959 and sold
primarily as a Dynakit. A masterpiece of efficient circuit
design, the ST-70 provided reliable, high-quality audio
amplification at an affordable price. More than 350,000
ST-70 amplifiers had been sold when production finally
ceased, making the ST-70 the most popular tube power
amplifier ever made. Today, the Dynaco ST-70 is still
considered to be one of the most outstanding tube
amplifiers ever made.
In 1966, Dynaco became a wholly owned
subsidiary of Tyco, Inc. and David Hafler remained with
the company for a few years, but left in 1974 to join
Ortofon, manufacturer and importer of high-end phono
cartridges. In 1977, Hafler founded the Hafler Company,
continuing the tradition of offering high quality kits and
assembled hi-fi gear. The Hafler DH-200 was introduced
using mosfet outputs – a feature that way ahead of the
rest of the amplifier community. In 1987 Halfer sold his
namesake to Rockford Corporation where chief engineer
Jim Strickland took on the challenge of moving Halfer
towards building high end amplifiers. This culminated
with the 9505 which by all accounts is one of the most
musical power amps ever made.
In 1995, Hafler left the hi-fi market to instead
focus on producing amplifiers for the studio market. This
is when Radial began the affiliation with Rockford, taking
on the distribution of Hafler amplifiers for Canada.
Radial purchased the Hafler brand from Rockford in
2014 with a goal of eventually re-launching some of the
Hafler classic amplifiers.

Radial Expands 500 Series
FunkDrive
Space Heater 500
Tube overdrive
Over the top tone control
Developed alongside its 8-channel rackmount
big brother, the Space Heater 500 is a single
channel tube drive designed for 500 series
racks. The module begins with a 12AX7 tube
with separate Level and Drive controls. A
3-position Heat switch enables the user to set
the plate voltage between 35, 70 or 140 volts
at the tube to vary the level of saturation from
a little bit of grit to over the top distortion.
An oversized transformer is employed at the
output to bring vintage character and warmth
to the signal path. Low pass and high pass filters
let you focus the effect and may be inserted
pre or post the distortion to suit. All this makes
the Space Heater 500 an extremely fun module
that delivers natural tube crunch to virtually
anything you throw at it!
The FunkDrive is a new 500 series module that
combines a powerful EQ with an overdrive circuit
to create a variety of creative textures on vocals
and instruments alike. Compatible with all
standard 500 series racks, the FunkDrive starts
with a 3 band semi-parametric EQ including high
and low shelving and a fully sweepable midrange. An input drive, master volume and wet-dry
mix controls are then added to enable the user to
apply anything from subtle overdrive to over the
top distortion, acting like a synthesizer filter bank
when pushed to the extreme. When used with
Radial Workhorse racks, the Omniport ¼” jack
acts as an insert point, allowing users to patch in
a compressor or other analog gear.

EXTCs (guitar effects interface) all the time to interface to my modular
synth and guitar pedals. Reamping and using pedals while mixing has
always been part of my work flow and with the EXTC it’s finally easy and
bullet proof.”
The Radial Tank Driver (spring reverb interface) also gets a lot
of action: “I love spring reverb, so it’s an awesome tool to be able to use
the springs in my Hammond organ and guitar amps during the mixing
process. Because you KNOW that reverb will sound good on everything,
not just guitar.“

Decoder™ Radial Makes Mid-Side Recording Easy
Mid-side mic matrix
The Decoder is a mic pre-amp and mid-side
stereo matrix that allows the user to easily
create recordings using the popular midside technique without having to custom
configure a recording console. The Decoder
can be used in the traditional two-microphone
sum-difference method, where a ‘side’ mic is
duplicated and phase reversed on a second
channel and blended with the mono ‘mid’
mic for a spectacular stereo image. Thanks to
three built-in balanced pre-amplifiers, the ‘side’
image can also be captured with stereo mics or
even two different microphones. As an added
feature, the Decoder may be set to line level to
Reamp tracks and create mid-side imaging
during the mix-down process.

The VoxGuard has been updated for 2015! One
of Primacoustics most popular products, the
VoxGuard has found its way into thousands of
studios worldwide. While it provides fantastic
isolation and acoustic control around the
microphone, users often complain that the lack
of eye contact between the vocalist, musicians
and engineer makes capturing the best
performance difficult. Renamed the VoxGuard
VU, this updated model now features a 3”
x 7” window for optimal sight lines. It is now
possible to record an isolated and controlled
vocal without losing the all important cues from
others in the room!

stereo pair is also equipped with a high-pass
filter to eliminate low frequency resonance.
Inputs include a choice of ¼” TRS or
a DB-25 inputs for convenient connection to
most audio interfaces. It can be used to apply
warmth and distortion on individual channels,
but is also equipped with a clean and powerful
mixer to provide sought-after summing in the
analog domain. Each stereo pair can be assigned
to the mix bus, and multiple Space Heaters can
be linked together to create a larger mixer. The
mix bus output includes its own level control
and separate headphone amplifier. Channels
1-8 can be output individually through a DB-
25 connector, while the summing mixer main
stereo outputs are XLR. As an added bonus,
each channel features balanced TRS send and
receive insert points for patching additional
outboard gear. This exceptional feature set
makes the Space Heater ideal for warming
up sterile digital tracks, vocals, adding grit
to bass and producing crushing drum tracks.
Used live, it delivers a natural sound to in-ear
monitors without having to revert to lackluster
compression.

When interfacing active sources such as
condenser microphones or direct boxes with
mic splitters or older PA systems, generating or
routing 48V phantom power is often a problem.
The StageBug SB-48 Power Bar is a dual channel
48 volt phantom power generator that converts
15 volts from a typical power adaptor to 48
volts for condenser microphones and direct
boxes. This handy device can be inserted near
the source allowing DC blocking devices such
as isolation transformers to be used after to
prevent noise caused by ground loops.
One of the challenges musicians face is being
able to use a condenser microphone with an
instrument amplifier or effects pedal. Radial
comes to the rescue with the StageBug SB48 UB. This unique phantom power supply
uses standard 15V supply to generate 48
volts, enabling the artist to use a condenser
microphone or active DI on the guitar, upright
bass or mandolin. A choice of standard
balanced or unbalanced outputs allows the
player to connect a condenser microphone to a
Radial PZ-Pre or PZ-Deluxe or any other typical
unbalanced instrument input.

London Room Kits
Affordable options for any room
Primacoustic, manufacturer of
professional acoustical treatment products,
has taken the guesswork out of treating your
room’s acoustics, offering four different predesigned room kits. One simply chooses the
kit that is designed for their room’s square
footage.
Bread of Stone Mixes Recording and
Ministry on the Road
When they are not working offering fully
packaged tour support as part of BNY
Production, you can find Bread of Stone touring
100 - 150 shows per year. The heavy touring
schedule could have created a problem for
this ambitious band but in early 2013 they
began working out how to turn this into an
opportunity. Their tour bus that serves as
their home for nearly half the year became
part of the solution. Their relationship with
Primacoustic as dealers of the product became
the other part of the solution.
Having already converted their
home living room into a control room using
Primacoustic Max Traps and Nimbus Clouds,
Ben and Bill decided to introduce sound control
on their tour bus. Ben explains: “We wanted to
have a mobile studio that would be adequate
for recording song demos. We wanted to make
sure that the acoustics of the studio were
balanced, in case the demo tracks made it to
the final cut.”
Jay Porter of Primacoustic explains
how this was a less complicated project than
most people would think: “With the walls at
odd angles and most of the busses absorptive
furniture still in place, the room was already

sq. ft, the London 8 is also a great way to
start treating any room.
Mobile recording studio added to Bread of
Stone’s tour bus with the help of Primacoustic
a decent listening environment. I suggested
that they install 3-inch thick Broadway panels
on all available wall surfaces and above the
mix position to eliminate primary reflections.
I also recommended installing a bass trap for
low frequency control, but really didn’t think
it would be possible with such little space
available. It was only when I saw the photos
that I realized they had pulled it off, with a
MaxTrap mounted on the upper wall in front of
the mix position.”
Ice Cube™
London 12™ Room Kit
Complete kit designed to address all of the
acoustic issues found in any small room! The
London 12 kit is designed for rooms that
are approximately 120 sq. ft., but includes
components that help solve problems in any
size of room.
London 16™ Room Kit
The London 16 kit is designed for rooms
150 sq. ft. and above, or for smaller rooms
where maximum absorption and accuracy is
required.

No Hum, No Buzz, Less Money
Eliminating noise has never been easier! The
compact Ice Cube features simple XLR in and
XLR out connector with a premium Eclipse
audio transformer inside. No power needed.
This passive device accepts line levels up to
+10dB and gingerly eliminates hum and buzz
caused by ground loops without introducing
harmonic distortion, phase shift or causing
bass frequencies to suffer. Features a solid steel
construction to handle the rigors of touring
while providing excellent shielding against
external magnetic fields.
London 10™ Room Kit
The London 10 kit is designed for rooms
that are approximately 100 sq. ft., but it also
compliments larger rooms when combined
with other Primacoustic Bass Traps, Clouds,
and Diffusers.
