Easter Break :
April 18 –25
TRO-VAL UPDATE…
Happy Spring!?!?!
Don’t stop believing – spring WILL be here someday!
As the year perks along we find we continue to be very busy. Basketball has
wrapped up and badminton is underway. Mr. Howard travels to Three Hills two
days a week after school to coach our badminton teams. We are grateful to PBI
and Kendall Boese for assisting with the use of the West Gym. Constable Warner
has wrapped up four weeks of hockey skills. Students met on Thursday mornings
at 7 a.m. to practice skills and do drills with Midget hockey players and their
coach. Breakfast was served to all participants after. Thanks to Landis
Stankievech, Cooper Cheshire, Kyle Gray, Dillon Tindal and Constable Warner as
well as the Town of Trochu for the use of the ice.
April is a short month with Easter break so it is extra busy! Grade 6 to 12 report
cards go home April 11 with interviews on April 16. Please call the school to book
your appointments. Mrs. Vickery and Mrs. Benedict will have a Book Fair at
Campus 2 during interview week – these are books for grade 6 to 12 students.
Proceeds from the sale of books goes to purchasing books for our Library.
Mrs. Tetreault and her drama cast have been practicing feverishly as their
production goes April 30 to May 3. There is lots of excitement with this year’s
production – see inside the newsletter for more information and where and when
to get tickets.
Trochu Valley School Council held a joint March meeting with Three Hills School
council at the invitation of Superintendent Bevan Davern and trustee Barry Kletke.
Those in attendance took part in an open discussion about what is going on in
school these days. Feedback was heard and will be used as the school division
makes their plans to move forward. All parents with email addresses in our
student registration system will receive a survey in early May where they will be
asked similar questions to give the opportunity for more feedback. Thank you
Mr. Boody and Three Hills School for hosting us.
Every drive by of the project site creates excitement as there is much more
activity and visible progress. Staff is having discussions around technology for the
‘new’ school in addition to planning the furniture order. It is a busy and exciting
time as we look ahead.
In closing, remember to call to set up interviews and hopefully, when I write this
for May, spring will truly have sprung!
Until next month…….

Trochu Valley Parent Council will no
longer be collecting Campbells Product
Labels after April 30, 2014.
The Program has changed it’s format
and goals and it is no longer a benefit to our
school to collect them.
There will be one more submission of labels for
products that will benefit our school.
So continue to collect labels for the next two
months but make sure you hand them in to the
school by April 30th.
Thank you to everyone who has been collecting
labels, we have been able to provide some great
stuff for the school.
Nutrition Tidbit…
Fuelling Active Kids Healthy meals and snacks will
help give your child fuel for being active .
Choose foods from all four food groups of Canada’s
Food Guide: Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk
and Alternatives and Meat and Alternatives.
Water is always the best choice for staying hydrated.
Although sports drinks replace water and minerals lost
in sweat, they are also high in sugar. They are meant to
be used only for intense activity that lasts over 1 hour.
Drinks high in caffeine (like cola or coffee) and energy
drinks are not recommended for children and youth.
FREGGIE FRIDAY WINNERS
Freggie Friday was a huge success. It was wonderful to see all students eating
fruits and vegetables. We trust that this healthy habit will continue and
will be an every day occurrence. There were hundreds of coupons passed
out on Fridays in March to our Freggie eaters.
The winners of the draws are:
Ava Campbell—Gr. 1
Kiera Wagstaff—Gr 4
Chloe Schlauch—Gr. 8
Each winner and their families will enjoy a gift certificate to Hillside Lanes in Three Hills.

Fribbit the Frog says…”It’s never too early to have your child’s eyes examined!
Eye See…Eye Learn is a vision and eye health program that helps parents to understand how and why they should have their
child’s eyes examined by an eye doctor.
Children should see an eye doctor (optometrist or ophthalmologist) between 6 and 12 months, again at 3 years of age, and then at
age 5. After age 5 a yearly eye exam is recommended. It is very important that all children have at least one
complete eye examination before they start school.
WHY?
Some problems can only be treated if they are found early.
80% of your young child’s learning is visual – through their eyes.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The Government plan covers the cost of eye examinations, by an eye doctor, for all children from birth to age 18 years.
HOW CAN I FIND AN EYE DOCTOR?
You don’t need a referral, you can just phone and make an appointment
You can look in the Yellow Pages of the phone book
Call the Alberta Association of Optometrists at 451-6824 or 1-800-272-8843
You can go to the website www.optometrists.ab.ca and click on “Find an Optometrist Near You”
WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS EYE GLASSES?
There is a program, through Eye See…Eye Learn which gives one FREE PAIR of EYEGLASSES to every kindergarten child.
Most school districts in Alberta have this program.
This Fact Sheet was developed jointly by The Alberta Association of Optometrists and the Multicultural Health Brokers Co-op

Letter from the Education Minister to Parents
Curriculum criticism doesn't add up: Preparing students for a modern economy requires the basics plus much more.
Recently, much has been made of the government's efforts to ensure that Alberta's curriculum is more responsive to the many
different ways in which students learn.
I feel parents deserve to hear directly from me about my ministry's efforts to ensure the provincial curriculum enables Alberta's
students to successfully compete in a dynamic, highly competitive world.
Along with being the minister, I'm also a father of three children in the education system, and 1 too have experienced some of
the frustrations expressed by parents in recent weeks. This is why I believe it is important for me to set the record straight about
the anticipated reforms.
I understand why some parents would be concerned with the allegation that mastery of the "basics" -skills such as arithmetic
and reading - will play a less important role in the new curriculum than it did before. If this were the case, I would be concerned
as well. But fortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.
I wish to assure parents that these basic skills will serve as the foundation and starting point of every change made to the curriculum. What they won't be is the end point. Through inquiry-based learning, we'll build upon these basic, foundational skills
while developing additional skills that the business community and parents tell us are so critical.
The conventional method of teaching fundamentals, whereby students rely heavily on memorization, versus a more engaged,
inquiry-based method are not mutually exclusive approaches to education. In fact, I believe it is crucial that we develop a curriculum that uses the best of both methods.
However, surviving on mere memorization alone is a thing of the past. The modern economy demands creativity and problem
solving, the application of critical thinking and an ability to collaborate and communicate. These skills lie at the heart of Alberta's
curriculum redesign process.
Top performing education jurisdictions, like Alberta, have increased their focus on these 21st century skills. We can't ignore that
without strong abilities in these areas, our kids will be left behind.
But we also can't ignore the concerns of parents.
This is why we are responding in a thoughtful and collaborative manner. The redesign process is being led by parents, employers, teachers, students and school authorities, all of whom will be working together over the next two years to develop a curriculum that successfully weaves new competencies in with core skills like numeracy and literacy. Doing so will help reinforce literacy and numeracy across all subjects and better focus a curriculum that has ballooned to approximately 1400 outcomes.
Despite recent criticism, parents should know and take comfort in the fact that according to the most recent international tests
our K-12 students remain at the top of international
rankings. Alberta's overall results are tremendously positive. Out of the 74 jurisdictions from around the world that took part in
the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey, Alberta ranked 11 th in math, 5th in reading, and 4th in science. Notably, Alberta's 15 year olds are actually outperforming Alberta's adults in these OECD rankings.
Our strength and performance internationally is due in part to Alberta's willingness to continually adapt. This year is a great example.
In response to years of consultation and research, we recently launched some groundbreaking initiatives under Premier Redford. The new Dual Crediting Program, for instance, better integrates K-12, post-secondary and industry credentialing. The
High School Flexibility Program empowers teachers to customize learning to better address individual student need. Eliminating Provincial Achievement Tests and implementing a more robust standardized assessment at the start of the school year will
provide parents and teachers with better information on how to tailor each child's education going forward and help them measure improvement throughout the year.
Curriculum needs to evolve as well. The days of a small group of educators taking 10 years to review curriculum one subject at
a time are long over. We need to be more nimble and create curriculum that is more in tune with the local community and economy. Our curriculum must allow for creativity and excellence in teaching to shine through. We must embrace the individuality of
the learner and ensure subject experts are teaching our kids. In short, our curriculum must become more relevant.
We've been asked to listen and that's exactly what we're doing. But the truth is that Alberta is at the top because we have not
been afraid to take action. I won't apologize for putting the success of our children first but I also commit to continue listening in
order to get it right.
At the end of the day we must ask ourselves, are we preparing our children for their future or for our past?
Jeff Johnson is Alberta's Minister of Education
