3rd Annual JC Rosenberg Endowed Lecture
Dr. Jerry Rosenberg, a long-term faculty member in our department and well-recognized leader in
the area of kidney transplantation, has provided for the department of surgery to have an endowed
lectureship each year. This year’s lecturer was Dr. A. Joseph Tector III, who is a Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Transplant Surgery Department at Indiana University. Dr. Tector is the Director of the University Abdominal Transplant Fellowship Program and the Chief Medical Officer of
the Indiana University Health Transplant Institute.
Prior to the lecture, Dr. Donald Weaver (WSUGS 1979), Chairman of the WSU Department of Surgery, along with Dr. Jerry Rosenberg hosted a reception for Dr. Tector at the Joe Muer Restaurant in
our Detroit Renaissance Center. A pleasant time was had by all as many reminiscences from the old
days took place.

OCTOBER 2015
3rd Annual JC Rosenberg Endowed Lecture
On Wednesday morning, September 30, Dr. A. Joseph Tector III presented an outstanding lecture on “Xenotransplantation.” This covered
many aspects of transplantation including past, present, and future. Dr.
Tector emphasized that xenotransplantation is important since there are
not enough human organ donors for patients who need organ donations.
He emphasized how the policy of defining a protocol for brain death has
improved the donor numbers but the need continues to be great. Regarding the past, he talked about the many giants in world surgery who
have experimented with xenotransplantation and have learned of the early rejection due to things that, for many years, were not understood. He
even pointed out that the great Jaboulay, who is better known for his de- Dr. Jerry C. Rosenberg, Dr. A. Joseph Tector III, and Dr. Donald
scription of the side-to-side proximal gastroduodenostomy for patients Weaver, Chairman of the WSU Department of Surgery
with a hostile duodenal bulb causing gastric outlet obstruction, was one of those who contributed to this early
work. The frustrations of early xenotransplantation was nicely summarized by the great Norman Shumway, who
emphasized that “Xenotransplantation is a topic for great interest for the future—and will continue to be in the
future.” Regarding the past history, a great step forward was made when Dr. Starzl showed that renal xenografts,
which were associated with a 10% survival rate at three months, improved under the influence of imuran and
prednisone, so that 70% were alive at three months. This is one of the important observations that led to the
modern era of xenograft transplantation.
The role of immunology identified that there were many genes, such as αGal and others, that would have to
be modified in order for xenotransplantation to work. A new science of gene modification was created whereby
animals would have specific genes removed from their makeup and would be known as “knockout” animals.
The process of improving the number of genes that can be “knocked out” is expanding, so that now there are
pigs that have had three important rejection genes knocked out and these animals can reproduce. Consequently, the current status is to have “knockout” pigs that can be raised in a controlled environment and, hopefully, be
the later recipients for xenotransplantation. Clearly, the whole area of xenotransplantation has moved from
“science fiction” to near reality.
The age of gene modification has resulted in the capability to modify specific genes so that now there are double gene knockout pigs and triple gene knockout pigs with the latter showing much hope in terms of avoiding
rejection. The ability to modify RNA and produce a new progeny of “triple knocked out pigs” in the future
should lead to better acceptance when organs are transferred from pigs to a baboon model. This type of genome editing is part of the future that is now being prepared for xenograft transplantation in patients with endstage renal disease. There was an excellent and lively discussion following his presentation.

REPORTS FROM THE OUTFIELD
During a recent visit of the Michael & Marian Ilitch
Wayne State University Department of Surgery at the
Comerica Park in the Ilitch Suite, Dr. Charlie Lucas
(WSU/GS 1962/67) and Dr. Anna Ledgerwood (WSUGS
1972) had the opportunity to be photographed with the
great Tiger star and Hall of Famer, Al Kaline. When
Charlie Lucas pointed out that Al Kaline was able to
throw perfect strikes from right field to home plate,
Al volunteered that he was a pitcher when he played in
little league.
Dr. Anna Ledgerwood, Tiger Hall of Famer, Mr. Al Kaline, and Dr. Charlie Lucas
Dr. Hale Wills (WSU/GS 2004/2010) wanted to pass along some updates. He
and his bride, Lora, have a new son, Ethan Jack Wills, who was born on August 13,
2015. Mom and baby are doing well. That makes 5 kids: Liam, 7; Colin, 6; Rowen,
4; Juliet, 22 months, and Ethan). Secondly, he is being inducted as a Fellow in the
American College of Surgeons this year in Chicago, and lastly, he plans to attend
the Wayne State Surgical Society annual meeting and dinner. You can congratulate Dr. Wills at [email protected].

Dear Roberto:
Thanks to Charles’ letters, we keep up with the life of the surgical department at WSU. I’d like to thank
you Dr. Wilson, and Charles, for all the time you took with us during our residency years. Thank you again
for keeping us updated on Ms. Walt, she did a lot for our Detroit Receiving Hospital’s conversion to a Museum. Great pieces of art. I will be visiting Michigan in October and would like to have dinner with you
“all” including my resident, Anna Ledgerwood. I still remember the hours spent in the ICU with our very
“sick” patients which has helped me a lot in my practice. I will phone soon.
Dr. Alfonso Chiscano

WAYNE STATE SURGICAL SOCIETY
The Wayne State Surgical Society (WSSS) was established during the tenure of Dr. Walt as the
chairman of the Department of Surgery. WSSS was designed to create closer contact between
the current faculty and residents with the former resident members in order to create a living
family of all of the WSU Department of Surgery. The WSSS also supports department activities.
Charter/Life Membership in the WSSS is attained by a donation of $1,000 per year for ten years
or $10,000 prior to ten years. Annual membership is attained by a donation of $200 per year.
WSSS supports a visiting lecturer each fall and co-sponsors the annual reception of the department at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mark A. Herman
(WSU/GS/1994/2001) passed the baton of presidency to Dr. Randall W. Smith (WSU/GS
1981/86) at the WSSS Gathering during the American College of Surgeons meeting in October
2014. Members of the WSSS are listed on the next page. Dr. Smith hopes that all former residents will become lifetime members of the WSSS and participate in the annual sponsored lectureship and the annual reunion at the American College of Surgeons meeting.
