UOIT March Break “Maker Camp” 2016
!
UOIT’s Faculty of Education STEAM3D Lab, in collaboration with The Fields Institute for
Research in Mathematical Sciences, will be hosting a 5-day “Maker” camp this March
Break. The camp will run from 9A.M. - 3P.M. beginning Monday March 14th and ending Friday
March 18th, 2016. The cost of the camp is $25 and this covers some lab materials and
beverages at snack time. Those who are interested in registering their child for the camp can

What is a Makerspace?
Camp schedule & What to Bring
A makerspace is a space where people can
come together and use different technologies
and physical materials to turn their projects
into tangible realities!
The March Break “Maker” Camp will run Monday to Friday
(March 14 - 18) from 9AM - 3PM. Children need to be
dropped off & collected at the Faculty of Education at these
times with a peanut-free packed lunch & two snacks.
The maker movement is an extension of the
DIY (Do-It-Yourself) and hacker culture.
Makers can make products from scratch or
alter pre-existing products to improve their
functionality or hack them for a specific
purpose.
Morning Sessions:

What does a Makerspace
Look Like?
Makerspaces are open spaces that facilitate
collaboration, an exploration of different
materials and usually have some or all of the
following tools: 3D printers, laptop and
desktop computers, game-creation, animation
and movie software, knitting machines,
circuit-building kits, e-textile kits, iPads,
tablets and apps, programmable robots,
construction tools and materials and much
more!
Our makerspace allows students to work
together, problem-solve, plan and create
unique projects all the while learning various
academic, inter- and intra-personal skills. The
idea is “learning-by-doing” and constructing
knowledge.
The morning sessions will have a math, coding and art
focus where participants will learn how to code and to
create their own math art and animations. This will be run by
a visiting math and coding expert from The Fields Institute
for Research in Mathematical Sciences.
Afternoon Sessions:
The afternoon sessions will have a literacy and the arts
focus where participants will learn how to use various
makerspace tools like circuits, 3-D printers and e-textiles.
The participants will use these to create unique projects
connected to select short stories. Possible projects include:
LED embedded art, 3-D printed characters, e-textile
products promoting or representing the short stories and/or
the creation of products that represent important symbols,
imagery, events or settings.
