Worship
is designed to remind you that there is a bigger
Beauty than any ugly thing you will ever face in your life.
- Paul Tripp
Dear Friends:
Welcome to the opening worship series of 2014!
Soren Kierkegaard, the well-known 19th century Danish philosopher, famously noted that
worship is a drama with an audience of One. He was inviting his readers to see that our
understanding of worship needs to be turned on its head in some way. Often we come to
worship solely with an appetite to receive. Like theatre goers we can sit down in worship and
think of the choir, the leaders, and the preacher as the actors in a drama put on display for our
edification, our entertainment.
But what if we are all actors? What if worship includes us all, invites us all, to be involved in a
drama put on display for only one audience member? In that vein, what you have in your hands
is a script, a six week script that helps you know how to be an actor in this drama of worship for
the living God. Planning worship this way, laying it out this way, is an experiment for us. It will feel
foreign to some but more familiar to others. In either case this series of worship and this booklet
were conceived to help us all become better ‘actors’ on the stage of worship.
Let us worship with joy and renewed understanding and may our drama together Raise the Roof
in this place and in our hearts!
Peace,
Erik

Worship
is first and foremost for His benefit, not ours,
though it is marvelous to discover that in giving Him pleasure, we ourselves
enter into what can become our richest and most wholesome experience in life..

Raise the Roof: Unfettered Praise
January 5, 2014
“We do not call ourselves
to worship; God calls us.
Throughout Scripture, the
call to worship is given
only by God. In the midst
of the world’s cacophony
of disordered powers,
God calls us to bow
before the power that is
above all others.”
– The Dangerous Act of
Worship, Mark Labberton

We Have Gathered, S. Pethel
11 a.m. Your Love Never Fails, Jesus Culture
Let this be a place
We feel God’s warm embrace
As open hearts receive a blessing true;
With each other share in word,
In song and prayer,
The worship that we bring, Lord to You.
Lord we gather to worship You.
Nothing can separate
Even if I ran away
Your love never fails
I know I still make mistakes but
You have new mercies for me every day

Come, Worship God, J.M. Martin
Come worship God,
In reverence and in awe.
Come worship God,
The God of majesty who dwells in mystery,
Who evermore shall be.
You stay the same through the ages
Your love never changes
There may be pain in the night
But joy comes in the morning
And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid
Because I know that You love me
Your love never fails
The wind is strong and the water’s deep
But I’m not alone here in these open seas
Cause Your love never fails
The chasm was far too wide
I never thought I’d reach the other side
But Your love never fails
You make all things work together for my good
Call to Worship
The call to worship invites
us to focus mind, heart, and
desire on the worship of
God. It gathers us to a time
of communal worship.

Song of Response and Praise
#2, Holy, Holy, Holy, Traditional, Arr. S. Stevens
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighy!
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy,
holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
In Hebrew, the word “Holy”
is translated “Kadosh” which
implies differentiation,
sacred, consecrated,
sanctified, hallowed.
The realm of the holy is
entirely set apart from the
common or the habitual.
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim
Falling down before Thee,
Which wert and art, and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy!
Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful flesh
Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
Invitation to Prayer

Let the Words of My Mouth, A. Baumbach
Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart
Be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts
as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
5
The Prayers of the People
are usually offered by one
person to represent our
unified trust in Jesus – and
also our unified desire to see
God act in the world. Rather
than only listening to it, seek
to echo the prayer in your
own heart and mind.
We Celebrate the Word
Affirmation of Faith Creeds are a summary of our
faith and connect us to the
Church around the world
and throughout the ages.
Saying the Apostle’s Creed
corporately (written c.390
AD), roots our faith back to
its earliest proclamation.
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His
only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; the third day
He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe
in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of
sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is
now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen, Amen.
Scripture Reading
Revelation 4:1-11
After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice
I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you
what must take place after this.”
1
We are to worship God and
lay down our crowns in
deference to His supreme
authority. This is another way
of saying: “Not my will but
Yours be done.”
At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone
sitting on it.
2
And the One who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbowthat shone
like an emerald encircled the throne.
3
Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twentyfour elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.
4
From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the
throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.
5
Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with
eyes, in front and in back.
6
The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like
a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.
7
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even
under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
8
“‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’
who was, and is, and is to come.”
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne
and who lives for ever and ever,
9
the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who
lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
10
“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.”

Come Thou fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong, a perfect plea,
A great High Priest whose name is “Love,”
Who ever-lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart;
I know that while in heav’n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
Hither by Thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

Fear not, O land, rejoice and be glad;
Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field,
For the pastures shall be green,
The trees shall bear fruit,
And the fig and the vine yield their harvest.
We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens
His will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now
Cease from distressing:
Sing praises to His Name;
He forgets not His own.
When satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin
Because a sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
Halleluiah, Halleluiah
Praise the One, risen Son of God
Behold Him there, the Risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM
The King of Glory and of Grace
One in Himself, I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God
We all do extol Thee,
Thou leader triumphant
And pray that Thou still our defender wilt be.
Let Thy congregation rejoice and be glad.
Thy Name be praised!
O Lord, make us free!
Rejoice and be glad!

#3 Holy God, We Praise Your Name
11 a.m.
The Stand, Hillsong
Holy God, we praise Your name,
Lord of all, we bow before You;
All on earth Your scepter claim,
All in heaven above adore You;
Infinite Your vast domain,
Everlasting is Your reign.
You stood before creation
Eternity in Your hand
You spoke the earth into motion
My soul now to stand
Hark! the loud celestial hymn
Angel choirs above are raising;
Cherubim and seraphim
In unceasing chorus praising,
Fill the heavens with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy Lord.
Lo! the apostolic train
Join Your sacred Name to hallow;
Prophets swell the glad refrain,
And the white-robed martyrs follow;
And from morn to set of sun,
Through the Church the song goes on.
Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, Three we name You;
While in essence only One,
Undivided God we claim You,
Then, adoring, bend the knee,
And confess the mystery.
You stood before my failure
And carried the cross for my shame
My sin weighed upon Your shoulders
My soul now to stand
So what can I say? What can I do?
But offer this heart oh God
Completely to You
So I’ll walk upon salvation
Your Spirit alive in me
My life to declare Your promise
My soul now to stand
So I’ll stand
With arms high and heart abandoned
In awe of the One who gave it all
I’ll stand my soul Lord to You surrendered
All I am is Yours

The first element in worship is adoration.
The Hebrews expressed this by their posture and not alone by their words.
For they prostrated themselves before
God.
‘O come, let us worship and bow down:
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.’
They did not come with an easy familiarity into the presence of
but were aware of His greatness and majesty,
and came with a sense of privilege to His house.

Rise Up Ye Saints of God, D. York
11 a.m.
Furious, Jeremy Riddle
Rise up ye saints of God!
Have done with lesser things;
Give heart and soul and mind and strength
To serve the King of kings.
Nothing can tear us from
The grip of His mighty love
We’ve only glimpsed His vast affection
Heard whispers of His heart and passion
It’s pouring out
His love is deep, His love is wide
And it covers us
His love is fierce, His love is strong
It is furious
His love is sweet, His love is wild
And it’s waking hearts to life
Rise up, ye saints of God!
His Kingdom tarries long;
Bring in the day of brotherhood
And end the night of wrong.
The Father loves and sends His son
The Son lays down his life for us
He lavishes His love upon us
He calls us now His sons and daughters
He’s reaching out
Rise up!
You awaken my heart to life
You awaken me to life
With Your love

We give You thanks forever.
Your will is perfect, and Your might
Relentlessly confirms the right;
Your lordship is our blessing.

Your Love is Strong, Jon Foreman
Heavenly Father, You always amaze me
Let Your Kingdom come
In my world and in my life
Give me the food I need to live through today
And forgive me as I forgive
the people that wrong me
Lead me far from temptation
Deliver me from the evil one
I look out the window,
The birds are composing
Not a note is out of tune or out of place
I walk to the meadow and stare at the flowers
Better dressed than any girl on her wedding day
So why should I worry?
Why do I freak out?
God knows what I need
You know what I need
Your love is, Your love is,
Your love is strong
The Kingdom of the Heavens is now advancing
O
Holy Spirit, perfect gift,
Invade my heart, invade this broken town
Who brings us consolation:
The Kingdom of the Heavens is buried treasure
To men and women
Would you sell yourself
Saved by Christ assure Your inspiration.
To buy the one you’ve found
Through sickness, need, and bitter death,
Grant
us Your warm, live-giving breath;
Two things You told me:
Our lives are in Your keeping.
That You are strong
And You love me, yes You love me
Our God in Heaven, Hallowed be
Thy name above all names
Your Kingdom come, Your will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us today our daily bread
Forgive us weary sinners
Keep us far from our vices and
Deliver us from this prison

Sin disrupts fellowship with
God. Confession before
God is a heart cry that
acknowledges the truth of
who we are and what we
have done.
The confession and
assurance embed the gospel
inside our worship. “If we
confess our sins, He who is
faithful and just will forgive
our sins and cleanse us from
all unrighteousness.”
1John 1:9

Lord God, thank you that by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, You have taken away our guilt,
and atoned for our sin.

#464 I Lay My Sins on Jesus
11 a.m.
Beautiful Exchange, Hillsong
I lay my sins on Jesus,
The spotless Lamb of God;
He bears them all and frees us
From the accursed load.
I bring my guilt to Jesus,
To wash my crimson stains
Clean in His blood most precious,
Till not a spot remains.
I lay my needs on Jesus;
All fullness dwells in Him;
He heals all my diseases;
My soul He does redeem.
I lay my griefs on Jesus,
My burdens and my cares;
He from them all releases;
He all my sorrows shares.
You were near when I was distant
Disillusioned, I was lost and insecure
Still mercy falls for my attention
You were waiting at the door
And I let You in
Trading your life for my offenses
For my redemption,
You carried all the blame
Breaking the curse of our condition
Perfection took our place
When only love could make a way
You gave Your life in a beautiful exchange
I long to be like Jesus Meek, loving, lowly, mild;
I long to be like Jesus The Father’s Holy Child.
I long to be with Jesus,
Amid the heavenly throng,
To sing with saints His praises,
To learn the angels’ song.
12
My burden erased, my life forgiven
There is nothing that could take this love away
My only desire and sole ambition
Is to love You just the same
When only love could make a way
You gave Your life in a beautiful exchange
When only love could break these chains
You gave Your life in a beautiful exchange
Holy are you God, Holy is Your name
With everything I’ve got, my heart will sing
How I love You
Scripture Reading
Isaiah 6:1-8
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne;
and the train of His robe filled the temple.
1
2
Above Him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces,
with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
3
And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled
with smoke.
4
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a
people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”
5
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in His hand, which He had taken
with tongs from the altar.
6
7
With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken
away and your sin atoned for.”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for Us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

I’ve found a hope stronger

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk
along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
7
8
Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
9
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
17
The Shema is a prayer
that has served as the
centerpiece of daily Jewish
prayer services dating back
to the time of Moses.
The Shema was the answer
that Jesus gave the Pharisees
(in Mark 12) when He
was asked the question,
“which is the greatest
commandment in the law?”
The Shema affirms God’s
unity and His soverign reign

Song of Response and Praise
8 & 9:30 a.m. #16 Give to Our God Immortal Praise
11 a.m.
This is What You Do, Bethel Music
Give to our God immortal praise;
Mercy and truth are all His ways:
Wonders of grace to God belong;
Repeat His mercies in your song.
It’s always like springtime with You
Making all things new
Your light is breaking through the dark
This love it is sweeter than wine
Bringing joy, bringing life
Your hope is rising like the dawn
He built the earth, He spread the sky,
And fixed the starry lights on high:
Wonders of grace to God belong;
Repeat His mercies in your song.
He fills the sun with morning light;
He bids the moon direct the night:
His mercies ever shall endure,
When suns and moons shall shine no more.
He sent His Son with power to save
From guilt and darkness and the grave:
Wonders of grace to God belong;
Repeat His mercies in your song.
This is what You do, this is what You do
You make me come alive
This is what You do, this is what You do
You make me come alive,
You make me come alive
It’s like I’m living for the first time
Finally living for the first time
Through this vast world He guides our feet,
And leads us to His heavenly seat:
His mercies ever shall endure,
When this our world shall be no more.

We Celebrate the Word
Scripture Reading
Nehemiah 8:1-12
All the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra
the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had
commanded for Israel.
1
So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the
assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand.
2
He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate
in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people
listened attentively to the Book of the Law.
3
Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside
him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his
left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
4
Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them;
and as he opened it, the people all stood up.
5
Ezra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded,
“Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the
ground.
6
The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita,
Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people
were standing there.
7
They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that
the people understood what was being read.
8
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who
were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do
not mourn or weep.”For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of
the Law.
9
Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those
who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the
LORD is your strength.”
10
11
The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”
Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate
with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

God must speak to us before
we have any liberty to speak
to Him. He must disclose
to us who He is before we
can offer Him what we are
in acceptable worship. The
worship of God is always
a response to the Word of
God. Scripture wonderfully
directs and enriches our
worship.

#802 Brethren, We Have Met to Worship
(Men Only)
Brethren, we have met to worship
And adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power,
While we try to preach the Word?
All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One
Comes down:
Brethren, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
(Women Only)
Sisters, will you join and help us?
Moses’ sister aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners
Who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior Tell them that He will be found:
Sisters, pray, and holy manna will be
Showered all around.
(All)
Let us pause before our Maker
And in silence hear His voice;
Christ the Living Word now meets us;
In His truth let us rejoice.
What we are should not appall us
For His mercy meets us here;
We are now made one in Jesus,
May our worship be sincere.
(All)
Let us love our God supremely,
Let us love each other too;
Let us love and pray for sinners
Til our God makes all things new.
Then He’ll call us home to heaven,
At His table we’ll sit down;
Christ will gird Himself and serve us
With sweet manna all around.

You Hold Me Now, Hillsong
On that day when I see all that You have for me
When I see You face to face,
There surrounded by Your grace
All my fear swept away
In the light of Your embrace
Where Your love is all I need
and forever I am free
Where the streets are made of gold
In Your presence healed and whole
Let the songs of heaven rise to You alone
No weeping, no hurt or pain
No suffering, You hold me now,
You hold me now
No darkness, no sick or lame
No hiding, You hold me now,
You hold me now
In this life I will stand
Through my joy and my pain
Knowing there’s a greater day,
There’s a hope that never fails
Where Your name is lifted high
And forever praises rise
For the glory of Your name,
I’m believing for the day
Where the wars and violence cease
All creation lives in peace
Let the songs of heaven rise to you alone
For eternity, all my heart will give
All the glory to Your name

#315 Break Thou the Bread of Life
11 a.m. With Everything, Hillsong
Break Thou the bread of life,
Dear Lord, to me,
As Thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;
Beyond the sacred page
I seek Thee, Lord,
My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word.
Open our eyes to see the things
That make Your heart cry,
To be the church that You would desire.
A Light to be seen.
Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me,
As Thou didst bless the bread by Galilee;
Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall;
And I shall find my peace, my all in all.
Thou art the bread of life, O Lord, to me,
Thy holy Word the truth that saveth me;
Give me to eat and live with Thee above;
Teach me to love Thy truth, for Thou art love.
O send Thy Spirit, Lord, now unto me,
That He may touch my eyes
And make me see:
Show me the truth concealed
Within Thy Word,
And in Thy Book revealed I see Thee, Lord.
Break down our pride, and all the walls
We’ve built up inside,
Our earthly crowns and all our desires,
We lay at Your feet.
So let hope rise, and darkness tremble
In Your holy light,
And every eye will see Jesus, our God,
Great and mighty to be praised.
God of all days
Glorious in all of Your ways
Your majesty, Your wonder and grace
In the light of Your name
With everything, with everything,
We will shout for Your glory.
With everything, with everything,
We will shout forth Your praise.
Our hearts they cry be glorified,
Be lifted high, above all names.
For You our King, with everything,
We will shout forth your praise.

We Gather Around the Word
“Introit” comes from the Latin
word that means “to enter.”
In the introit, the choir
begins to sing as a musical
picture of our entry into the
presence of God. Like our
biblical forefathers, we are
processing into the presence
of God led by the choir and
the ministers
(1 Ch. 15:25-28).
The Introit reminds us that
we do not enter into God’s
presence out of presumption
but rather by His gracious
invitation.

#25 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
11 a.m.
To Be Like You, Hillsong
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,
To His feet your tribute bring;
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore His praises sing. Al-le-lu-ia!
Al-le-lu-ia! Praise the everlasting King!
Humble King, Holy One
Friend of sinners, God’s own Son
God in flesh, among men
You walked my road, You understand
Praise Him for His grace and favor
To all people in distress.
Praise Him, still the same forever,
Slow to chide and swift to bless. Al-le-lu-ia!
Al-le-lu-ia! Glorious in His faithfulness!
Father-like, He tends and spares us;
All our hopes and fears He knows.
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes. Al-le-lu-ia!
Al-le-lu-ia! Widely as His mercy flows.
Angels, help us to adore Him,
You behold Him face to face.
Sun and moon bow down before Him;
All who dwell in time and space. Al-le-lu-ia!
Al-le-lu-ia! Praise with us the God of grace.
Servant King, Friend to me
You saved my soul, washed my feet
Here I’ll bow, give all to You
Lord I want, To be like You
All I want, all I need
More of You, less of me
Take this life, Lord it’s Yours
Have my heart, have it all
I will walk, in Your ways
Love Your word, seek Your face
My reward, my sole pursuit
To know You more, to be like You
Jesus Jesus, all I want is to be like You

Prayer of Adoration
We offer to God what is
deserved by no one and
nothing else – our adoration.
Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed
Amen.
Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is
now and every shall be, world without end, Amen, Amen.
25
For centuries the church
has used creeds and
catechisms to articulate,
and better understand, our
shared faith.
The Gloria Patri, Latin for
the “Glory Be,” is a short
hymn of praise dating back
to the very beginnings of
Christianity. Christians
throughout history have
sung this hymn, affirming
the everlasting nature of
God’s glory (“as it was in the
beginning...”) and praising
our triune God (Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit).

8 & 9:30 a.m. #619 God Will Take Care of You

God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
Refrain: God will take care of you,
Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.
Through days of toil when heart doth fail,

God will take care of you. Refrain
All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you. Refrain

And all will sing out, “Hallelujah”
And we will cry out, “Hallelujah”
All the hearts who are content
And all the who feel unworthy
All who hurt with nothing left

Go on and tell it to the masses,

Scripture Reading
Philippians 2:1-11
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort
from His love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
1
We are never nearer Christ
than when we find ourselves
lost in a holy amazement at
His unspeakable love.
- John Owen
then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in
spirit and of one mind.
2
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above
yourselves,
3
4
not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used
to His own advantage;
rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in
human likeness.
7
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to
death—even death on a cross!
8
Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above
every name,
9
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the
earth,
10
11
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

‘glory saying’. This short

11a.m.
For the Sake of the World, Bethel Music
Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer,
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known:
In seasons of distress and grief
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.
I’m laying down my life,
I’m giving up control
I’m never looking back, I surrender all
I’m living for Your glory on the earth
Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer,
Thy wings shall my petition bear,
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless;
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer.
This passion in my heart,
This stirring in my soul
To see the nations bow,
For all the world to know
I’m living for Your glory on the earth
For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me
Light a flame in my soul for every eye to see
For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me
For every knee to bow down
For every heart to believe
For every voice to cry out
Burn like a fire in me
For every tongue to confess
You alone are the King
You are the Hope of the Earth
Burn like a fire in me

We are invited to eat and drink at this table with others who,

We do not deserve to be invited,

We sit at the Communion table with adulterers, child abusers, betrayers,

We also sit at the table with the destitute, the poor,

Song of Praise
8 & 9:30 a.m.
#92 Crown Him with Many Crowns
Crown Him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon His throne;
Hark! How the heavenly anthem
Drowns all music but its own;
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of Him who died for Thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King
Through all eternity.
Crown Him the Lord of life,
Who triumphed o’er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save;
His glories now we sing
Who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring,
And lives that death may die.
Crown Him the Lord of love;
Behold His hands and side,
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
In beauty glorified;
No angels in the sky
Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bend their burning eyes
At mysteries so bright.
Crown Him the Lord of years,
The Potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres,
Ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail!
For Thou hast died for me;
Thy praise shall never, never fail
Throughout eternity.

The lifting my hands, a sacrifice
Oh Lord Jesus turn Your eyes upon me
For I know there is mercy in Your sight
Your statutes are my heritage forever
My heart is set on keeping Your decrees
Please still my anxious urge toward rebellion
And let Love keep my will upon its knees
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
To all creation I can see a limit
But Your commands are boundless
And have not
So Your Word is my joy and meditation
From the rising to the setting of the sun
All Your ways are loving and are faithful
Your road is narrow but Your burden light
Because You gladly lean to lead the humble
I shall gladly kneel to leave my pride
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

We Celebrate the Word
Scripture Reading
Revelation 5:1-14
Then I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both
sides and sealed with seven seals.
1
And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals
and open the scroll?”
2
But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look
inside it.
3
I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look
inside.
4
Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the
Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
5
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne,
encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven
eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
6
7
He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.
And when He had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down
before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense,
which are the prayers of God’s people.
8
9
And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because You were slain,
and with Your blood You purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on
the earth.”
10
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands,
and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and
the elders.
11
12
In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea,
and all that is in them, saying:
13
“To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
14
The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God, K. Lafferty
Seek Ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness,
And all these things shall be added unto You;
Allelu, alleluia!
Prayers of the People Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts
as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

You Have Won Me, Bethel Music
Breathe on me, breath of God.
Fill me with life anew, that
I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
Breathe on me, breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.
Breathe on me, breath of God, until I am,
I am wholly Thine,
Till all this earthly part of me glows
With Thy fire divine.
Breathe on me, breath of God,
So shall I never die;
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.
Breathe on me, breathe on me, breath of God.
Grace, You show me grace,
You lifted my shame
Drawn me with loving kindness
Washed whiter than snow,
You have redeemed
And me whole

Panis Angelicus (Bread of the Angel Host)
Franck / Rutter
Bread of the angel host
Sent down from God above;
Body of Christ our Lord in token of His love:
O gift most wonderful!
Christ as our sacrament:
Humble, lowly, all share His sacred feast.
Jesus, You have won me
You’ve broken every chain
With love and mercy
You triumphed over death
And You are worthy
Of glory and praise
Love, You show me love by leaving Your throne
By bleeding and dying on a cross
That wonderful cross
That took all my guilt and sin away
Shout it out and lift up one voice in worship
Sing it out until all the earth can hear it
Jesus is alive and He saves
He rescues and saves

The prayers of God’s people

#745 Jesus Shall Reign
11 a.m.
Revelation Song, Kari Jobe, (arr. Shane and Shane)
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
Does its successive journeys run;
His kingdom spread from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Holy, Holy is He
Sing a new song to Him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat
To Him shall endless prayer be made,
And endless praises crown His head;
His name like sweet perfume shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.
Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
“Praise to the King of kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You.”
People and realms of every tongue dwell
On His love with sweetest song,
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on His name.
Blessings abound where’er He reigns;
The prisoners leap to lose their chains,
The weary find eternal rest,
And all who suffer want are blessed.
Let all the people rise and bring
Their special honors to our King;
Angels descend with songs again
And earth repeat the loud Amen.
Sending
Clothed in rainbows of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor, strength and
Glory and power be
To You the only wise King
Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder
At the mention of Your name
Jesus, Your name is power,
Breath, and living water
Such a marvelous mystery
As we go forth this week,
may our lives be like sweet incense to our Lord,
and may we be the aroma of Christ to those around us.
Amen.

A Shocking Kiss!
February 9, 2014
St. Francis Kissing A Leper, © date unknown Michael O’Brien | studiobrien.com
The crisis the church currently faces is that our individual and corporate
worship do not produce the fruits of justice and righteousness that God seeks.
Scripture indicates that our personal and communal worship are meant to
shape our vision and fire our engines to be daring disciples, imitating and
sharing the love of Jesus Christ in acts of righteousness and justice.

Forever Reign, Hillsong LIVE
Holy, holy; Jesus, You are holy;
Lord, Almighty; Jesus, You are Lord.
You are Lord of lords; You are King of kings;
Living bread from heaven,
The Faithful and True.
You’re the Lamb of God
Slain before the world;
We surrender all that we are to You.
You are the Way; You are the Truth;
You are the Life; and life You give.
In You is life; In You is love;
In You is hope; In You we live.
You are Lord of lords; You are King of kings;
Living bread from heaven,
The Faithful and True.
You’re the Lamb of God
Slain before the world;
We surrender all that we are to You.
You are good, You are good
When there’s nothing good in me
You are love, You are love
On display for all to see
You are light, You are light
When the darkness closes in
You are hope, You are hope
You have covered all my sin
You are peace, You are peace
When my fear is crippling
You are true, You are true
Even in my wandering
You are joy, You are joy
You’re the reason that I sing
You are life, You are life,
In You death has lost its sting
Oh, I’m running to Your arms,
I’m running to Your arms
The riches of Your love
Will always be enough
Nothing compares to Your embrace
Light of the world, forever reign
You are more, You are more
Than my words will ever say
You are Lord, You are Lord
All creation will proclaim
You are here, You are here
In your presence I’m made whole
You are God, You are God
Of all else I’m letting go
My heart will sing,
No other name
Jesus Jesus

#523 Trust and Obey
11 a.m.
Song of Moses, Aaron Keyes
When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Oh the Lord, our strength and song
Highest praise to Him belongs
Christ the Lord, our conquering King
Your name we raise, Your triumphs sing
Refrain: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He will richly repay;
Not a grief nor a loss,
Nor a frown nor a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey. Refrain
But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows and the joy He bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey. Refrain
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go Never fear, only trust and obey. Refrain
Praise the Lord, our mighty warrior
Praise the Lord, the glorious One
By His hand, we stand in victory
And by His name, we overcome
Though the storms of hell pursue,
In darkest night, we worship You
You divide the raging sea
From death to life, You safely lead
All the saints and angels bow
Hosts of Heaven are crying out,
“Glory, glory to the King,
You reign for all eternity!”
The Lord shall reign forever and ever

opening words or prayers

a great thing, but talking to
God for men is greater still.”

Praise the Lord, O my Soul
You uphold the cause of the oppressed
You give food to the hungry
You set the prisoners free
You give sight to the blind
You lift up those who are bowed down.
You watch over the stranger and foreigner
You sustain the fatherless and the widow.
Merciful and Gracious God,
hear our prayers…
for the church universal …
for this congregation,
its mission and ministry …
for the healing of the earth …
for peace and justice in the world …
for nations and leaders …
for our local community …
for the poor and oppressed …
for the bereaved and lonely …
for all who need healing …
Guide us, O God, by your Holy Spirit,
that all of our prayers and all of our lives
may serve Your will and show Your love to
those next to us, to those around us,
to those throughout Your world.
And now, Lord Jesus,
as You taught us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be
Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts
as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for
Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and
the glory forever. Amen.

We praise thee, O God,
For the Son of Thy love,

All-sufficient sacrifice,
So freely given, such a price bought
Our redemption, Heaven’s gates swing wide
We praise thee, O God,
For Thy Spirit of light,
Who has shown us our Savior
And scattered our night. Refrain
There’s an army rising up
All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain,

Revive us again:
Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each soul be rekindled with fire from above.

Scripture Reading
1
You, LORD, showed favor to Your land;
You restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2
You forgave the iniquity of Your people
and covered all their sins.
3
You set aside all Your wrath
and turned from Your fierce anger.
4
Restore us again, God our Savior,
and put away Your displeasure toward us.
5
Will You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong your anger through all generations?
6
Will You not revive us again,
that Your people may rejoice in you?
7
Show us Your unfailing love, LORD,
and grant us Your salvation.
8
I will listen to what God the LORD says;
He promises peace to His people, His faithful servants—
but let them not turn to folly.
9
Surely His salvation is near those who fear Him,
that His glory may dwell in our land.
10
Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11
Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.
12
The LORD will indeed give what is good,
and our land will yield its harvest.
13
Righteousness goes before Him
and prepares the way for His steps.
The Word Proclaimed
Psalm 85
“We need to discover all
over again that worship is
natural to the Christian,
as it was to the godly
Israelites who wrote the
psalms, and that the habit
of celebrating the greatness
and graciousness of God
yields an endless flow of
thankfulness, joy, and zeal.”

Offertory
Offertory is always about
our response to something
God has done in us and for
us. God always initiates,
we then respond with our
offering. While our offering
is customarily monetary
gifts, God also wants us to
offer him our gifts, our time,
our talents, and our passions
so that we can be His hands
and feet in a hurting and
broken world.

Coming on the clouds with fire

Washing over all our sin

Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like You have loved me
Break my heart for what breaks Yours

I see a generation
Rising up to take their place

Charge and Sending
As people of the Living God, today may we go forth,
knowing that our worship does not end here in this room.
May we continue to worship the Lord today, this week,
and in the coming year with acts of
Justice, Service and Love on the Lord’s behalf.
May we be a congregation with a purpose,
to spend ourselves on behalf of the needy,
to love the least of these
as though they were Christ in the flesh.
May we as a body be an aroma of
Grace, Love and Hope
in a city, and in a world that desperately needs
the love and Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May we fulfill the call to spread Justice and Peace
today, tomorrow, and every day
until Christ comes again in Glory.
41
Amen.
Just as it is God who calls
us to worship, it is God who
sends us from this gathering.
We are blessed by God to
go into the world living in
a new way as a result of
having heard the Word and
gathered in community.
In worship we have been
nourished that we may go
out and offer that same
nourishment to the world.
Come Unto Me © 2013 James Fissel | Eyekons
A true love of God must begin with a delight in His holiness.
- Jonathan Edwards
Worship is the submission of all our nature to God.
It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness,
the nourishment of the mind with His truth,
the purifying of the imagination by His beauty,
the opening of the heart to His love,
the surrender of the will to His purpose.
