Easy-To-Use Toy Selection Guide
Dear Parents and Friends,
At Toys“R”Us, children are the
inspiration for what we do every
day–offer the best and broadest
selection of toys available for
children of every ability. Each year,
we have the unique opportunity
to present a collection of toys for
children with special needs,
appropriately selected for their
play and skill-building value. Our
commitment to fulfilling that goal
continues with this 15th edition
of the Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for
Differently-Abled Kids.
Once again, we are proud to be
supported by the experts at the
National Lekotek Center, renowned
for their work in evaluating the best
play opportunities for differentlyabled children.
To make your toy choices easier,
specific symbols indicate each
toy’s skill-building benefits. Also,
for the first time, we’ve included
a helpful index on pages 52-55
to guide your toy selections
according to skill categories.
With every issue of the Toys“R”Us
Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids
we strive to help meet the needs
of special children, their parents,
caregivers and therapists. We
sincerely hope that we’ve again
succeeded in providing you with
a convenient way to find toys that
enrich the play experience for
your child.
Sincerely,
Jerry Storch
Chairman and CEO
Toys“R”Us, Inc.

m Skill-Building Toy Finder Index
Located at the end of the guide on pages 52–55,
our Skill-Building Toy Finder Index places every toy into
separate skill-building categories, to help choose appropriate
toys for your child’s specific needs and interests.
Dear Parents and Friends,
As many of you know, my mother, Eunice
Kennedy Shriver, started the Special Olympics,
the largest sports organization in the world for
the intellectually disabled. Through the Special
Olympics, I had the great opportunity to view
firsthand how children’s spirits can be lifted
by exploring their capabilities. I’m sure you’ll
agree, there’s an inspiring sense of victory and pride when a child
with special needs meets a challenge.
That rewarding feeling can be experienced during playtime as well.
Within this guide, Toys“R”Us has gathered a collection of toys
that offer entertaining ways to build skills, teach cause and effect,
stimulate role play and more. These toys help to empower differentlyabled kids, encouraging them with a “can-do” attitude in a world that
too often assumes they cannot.
Over the years, this guide has become a must-have for anyone
who’s admired a special child’s incredible determination to succeed,
to learn and to play. I am honored to be this year’s spokesperson
for the 2007 Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids. Because
all children are deserving of victories… and because every child, no
matter their level of ability, holds great promise.

Top Ten Tips for Buying Toys
Top Ten Tips for Buying Toys
Prepared by the National Lekotek Center
Selecting a toy for a child with disabilities? Here are the questions that the play experts at the
National Lekotek Center ask when choosing developmentally appropriate toys for differentlyabled kids. Use these questions to guide you in making the right match between the child for
whom you’re buying and the toys in the Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids.
1. MULTI-SENSORY APPEAL
Does the toy respond with lights, sounds or movement to engage the child?
Are there contrasting colors? Does it have a scent? Is there texture?
2. METHOD OF ACTIVATION
Will the toy provide a challenge without frustration? What is the force required to activate?
What are the number and complexity of steps required to activate?
3. PLACES THE TOY WILL BE USED
Will the toy be easy to store? Is there space in the home?
Can the toy be used in a variety of positions such as side-lying or on a wheelchair tray?
4. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCCESS
Can play be open-ended with no definite right or wrong way?
Is it adaptable to the child’s individual style, ability and pace?
5. CURRENT POPULARITY
Is it a toy that will help the child with disabilities feel like “any other kid”?
Does it tie in with other activities like books and art sets that promote other forms of play?
6. SELF-EXPRESSION
Does the toy allow for creativity, uniqueness and making choices?
Will it give the child experience with a variety of media?
7. ADJUSTABILITY
Does it have adjustable height, sound volume, speed and level of difficulty?
8. CHILD’S INDIVIDUAL ABILITIES
Does the toy provide activities that reflect both developmental and chronological ages?
Does it reflect the child’s interests and age?
9. SAFETY AND DURABILITY
Does the toy fit with the child’s size and strength? Does it have moisture resistance?
Are the toy and its parts sized appropriately? Can it be washed and cleaned?
10. POTENTIAL FOR INTERACTION
Will the child be an active participant during use?
Will the toy encourage social engagement with others?
The toys included in the Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids

VTech
The music, sound effects and bright colors of the V.Smile learning system can
capture and maintain a youngster’s attention. It can be used independently
or connected to a TV. Children with physical limitations can benefit from the
oversized, shaped buttons that require very little pressure from a whole hand
or isolated finger to activate. The buttons assist in learning shapes and colors,

Roll-a-Rounds Pull & Spin Caterpillar
Fisher-Price
When this cheerful pal goes for a stroll, his antennae wiggle and his eyes look all around. You’ll find this
caterpillar to be a versatile friend who can engage a child at different developmental stages. For instance,
your child can use hand and finger grasping to pull the string and make the Roll-a-Rounds balls magically
twirl. Then she can practice giving them a spin using an isolated finger. Parents can help promote social
interaction by rolling each Roll-a-Rounds ball back and forth to the child. The variety of textures along the
caterpillar provides great tactile stimulation. The toy’s friendly face can encourage your child’s language
development as she points to the caterpillar’s eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.

sequencing steps, and ideal for
continuous play. The broad base aids
stability and enables a child to work

game with family or friends can teach children about taking turns, as well as provide practice of gross
motor skills. Focus and attention can be heightened as children guess what a playmate is acting out
or think about how they are going to act out their own charade. Extra large spaces on the game board
create a quick game from start to finish, so children can complete a game in little time.

Cosmic Catch
Hasbro
Four different quick-passing games
using this fun talking ball encourage
focus, attention, memory and
concentration, as well as gross motor
skills. Players wear a colored band on
their hand, attached with an elastic
strap. The ball “recognizes” the
player when the band touches the
ball. Sequential thought processes
are used. In Fast Pass, for example,
the player holding the ball passes it
to the player with the color that was
called out by the ball. Player must
auditorily identify the color, visually
recognize the matching band and
throw the ball to that player. Other
games encourage following directions
and cracking color sequencing. Needs
4 AAA batteries, sold separately.

Little Champs 3-in-1
Sports Center
Little Tikes
Everyone can have fun taking turns
batting a baseball, kicking a football,
or shooting basketball hoops using
this multi-sports center. When
children play with a friend, this toy
encourages social skills such as
practicing patience, sportsmanship
and teamwork. The football and
baseball games are stabilized,
making it easier for children with
motor difficulties to kick or hit the
balls. The sports center produces
the sound of cheers every time
the child makes a basket...
a great self-esteem
builder! Batteries included.

Spider-Man 3
Weather Blitz Football
Hasbro
Throwing a football to a friend
promotes social play, eye-hand
coordination and whole body
movement. Made of durable, allweather material, this Spider-Man
football has raised rubber spider
webs and added texture that aids
grasping and catching with one or
two hands. Upper body strength,
trunk rotation and arm extension
are positively affected. Use hands
together at midline to catch and hold
the ball, plus visual acuity to throw
to a playmate or aim at a target.
Appropriate timed release to toss the
ball and visual tracking to follow it
through the air are used.
