A VIEW FROM THE VILLA - WINTER 2016
Dear Friends of
Villa St. Joseph,
A. Gary Chace and
Mary M. Murray, MPH, NHA
Each year brings new beginnings.
This year we hope to bring you a new
perspective with this first newsletter
that features our new design. Our goal
is to share with you the rich tradition of
Villa St. Joseph’s roots that reach back
to the Sisters of St. Joseph in France
in the 1600s. At the same time, we will
be communicating how Villa St. Joseph
is moving ahead into the future. Our
newsletter will feature stories of how
Villa St. Joseph celebrates meaningful
personal relationships—between our
residents, families, staff, and volunteers
—as part of our mission of “excellence
in compassionate care.” It will also tell
you about how Villa St. Joseph is striving
to be at the leading edge of modern
therapeutic approaches to care for our
residents.
In this newsletter, you will find a
story about how we are putting new
technologies to use to benefit our
residents who live on our Fontbonne
Neighborhood for memory care
support. The IN2L (It’s Never Too Late)
computers, made available through donor
support, provide residents with unique
opportunities to connect with their past
as well as keep connected with their
families in present time. I think you will
enjoy the story about Joan who watches
her family’s home videos on the computer
screen. Other residents enjoy listening
to Frank Sinatra songs from the 50s or
watching “I Love Lucy” television spots.
2
Another resident is planning with staff
assistance to “Skype” her family this
weekend. The possibilities are endless!
Please join us in kicking off this new
newsletter series of “old” and “new,”
which we hope to expand to include
various e-newsletters and website
articles over time. And as always, thank
you for your support as we continue on
our journey of bringing “excellence in
compassionate care” to our residents
now and in the future in a place of
healing.
With warmest regards,
Mary M. Murray, MPH, NHA

Bridging the Past and
Present through Technology
Praying together is an activity that is
important to the residents of our Fontbonne
Neighborhood. Praying the rosary with
the aid of the new computer system, It’s
Never 2 Late (IN2L), brings some residents
together in prayer each day. The rosary
is displayed on the computer screen and
the beads of the rosary light up as each is
prayed. This blend of something as old as
the rosary (1214 A.D.) with cutting edge
technology has afforded the residents a
unique opportunity to learn new skills while
being reminded of times past.
The IN2L system was introduced to our
Fontbonne Neighborhood in September
2015 as part of an ongoing effort to
introduce new advances in dementia
care best practices. Residents, most
experiencing dementia or mid- to late-stage
Alzheimer’s disease, have access to the
system. In addition to providing individual
email accounts, the system can be
personalized with My Pages for each user.
Their relatives can access the pages, send
emails, or upload the latest family photos
or videos. The residents especially enjoy
when their families post vintage photos or
videos, scenes from their younger days,
which often trigger pleasant memories. The
My Page feature permits family members
to personalize IN2L for their loved ones to
include musical preferences, games, and
other activities of interest.
At the onset of the program, Quigley
Catholic High School students, pictured
above, assisted with setting up the My
Page accounts for current residents.
“The computer skills of this younger
generation definitely came in handy
for the implementation of the My Page
accounts,” says Chris Gebhardt, activity

director at the Villa. The students, under
the direction of teacher Maria Myron,
came to be involved in this project as a
way to fulfill senior service hours. “The
Villa graciously welcomed the five seniors,
and the students’ interactions with the
residents at the Villa were very positive,”
said Ms. Myron. They came back to her
with stories about their time spent painting
pumpkins, playing games, and helping set
up My Pages. “Each of the five students
felt that they had made new friends in the
residents, and all were eager to return to
visit,” she said.
Using the system can enrich the
communication between the resident and
his/her family. Resident Joan Irwin, 84, a
New Brighton native, is able to view family
photos and videos that were uploaded
to her pages by her daughter, Kathy
Eaten, who lives in North Carolina. Kathy
remembers her mother as a strong, capable
woman who became the head of the family
upon the untimely death of her husband
in 1975. Kathy, the eldest child, was 17
years old at the time. “My mother was a
single mother with four children,” says
Kathy. “She had to go to work to

interests into their personal

support her family.” Joan worked in
the business office of the New Brighton
School District for many years.
Joan began to exhibit the signs of dementia
in 2009, and was unable to live alone. After
trying to care for her at home, it became
clear that an assisted living facility was
the best alternative. As her condition
progressed, Joan was in need of specialized
memory care, and, in late 2014, she was
welcomed to Villa St. Joseph. It is difficult
to live at a distance from her mother,
but Kathy commented on the sense of
peace she has knowing that her mom is in
good hands.
Kathy has uploaded vintage family photos
and videos to the IN2L system. She has
home movies from 1958 through 1995 and
used a software program that allows her to
edit them into short clips and send them
to her mother. “Mother has some recall of
things in the distant past,” says Kathy. It is
her hope that seeing the images will help
her remember her own children and Karen’s
two children, Joan’s only grandchildren.
“Hopefully, this technology can help give her
some level of comfort and connectedness,”
says Kathy. “It just depends on the day.”
2/25/16 1:49 PM
According to Chris, the system is
accessible to all residents, their families,
and staff, at any time. “Anyone can use the
system. It allows residents to incorporate
their own interests into their personal
pages,” she said. Another feature is the
mobility of the system. “The equipment
is easily portable to assist with resident
programming with large and small groups,
or in a resident room for more of a one-toone interaction,” says Chris.
The system, with over 3,000 applications,
increases cognitive stimulation. For
instance, there is a component called
Pastimes that offers a selection of videos
of common everyday pastimes such as
cooking, sewing, or even making a bed,
which can be viewed by residents, perhaps
helping them to recall some of their simple,
everyday activities.
Resident Art Tarquinio has personalized
his My Pages with a travel file featuring
scenes from Italy, a place he has always
loved. That file includes panoramic views
of Italy’s breathtaking countryside, which
takes Art on a virtual journey through the
country. The icon for Art’s music selections
features a photo of Frank Sinatra, one of
his favorite singers.
The system also provides for musical
entertainment. Residents can participate
in a sing-a-long, play an instrument with
the use of a laser instrument, or listen
to therapeutic music during meals. “We
use it to pipe music into the dining room
at breakfast or dinner time,” says Chris.
“Music has a soothing effect.”
If residents enjoy playing games, the system
provides games ranging from well-known
Sr. Dolorosa Kleinman enjoys
interacting with IN2L.
102964_VSJ News_WINTER16 R3.indd 5
television games such as Family Feud
and Jeopardy, to more interactive games
including jigsaw puzzles, matching images,
and checkers. Kathy relates that her mother
used to enjoy computer games like solitaire
and canasta, but she is unable to play them
now. She does enjoy “Feed the Fish,” which
is a sensory stimulation program consisting
of an interactive fish tank and pond,
where residents can touch the screen to
hear soothing sounds of water or actually
“feed” the fish.
There is also a way to access historical
information about a particular location. By
simply inputting a place where the resident

offers components for staff
training, so that employees
can stay informed of new
methods in dementia care.
was born or had lived, any postcard
photos with geographic history that are
in existence will appear on the screen.
What a wonderful way to encourage
remembering! A Sister of St. Joseph who
resides in the Fontbonne neighborhood
enjoys the system’s Travel component,
which enables her to “travel” to places that
she has visited in the past or venture into
new areas of the world. One of the male
residents enjoys watching documentaries
on the system due to his interest in
History, and another enjoys Irish music
and will sing along to familiar songs.
The IN2L program is still new, but the
potential is great for both resident and
staff use. The system offers components
for staff training so that employees can
stay informed of new methods in dementia
care. The system can serve a wide range
of resident needs, including hospice care.
“We already have programs implemented
on the Activity Calendar each month,
and all staff within the Fontbonne
Neighborhood have been trained on the
system,” says Chris. “We plan to utilize
the programs more and more as we
move forward with our best practices in
dementia care.”
Villa St. Joseph
Meeting
Standards of
Excellence
Through
Accreditation
Villa St. Joseph is seeking
CARF-CCAC (Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities - Continuing Care
Accreditation Commission)
re-accreditation in 2016, along with
Presbyterian SeniorCare, for meeting
standards of excellence in the areas
of Aging Services Network and
Person-centered Long Term Care
Community. This means that we strive
to provide individualized care to each
resident in a home-like environment.
We are also seeking accreditation for
meeting Dementia Care standards
of excellence. All of these standards
focus on continuous performance
improvement based on resident, family,
staff and other stakeholders’ feedback
as well as meeting basic standards for
various administrative and care areas.
We are proud to be fully accredited as
part of our ongoing efforts to meet Villa
St Joseph’s mission of “excellence in
compassionate care.”

A VIEW FROM THE VILLA - WINTER 2016
Staff Presence:
Samantha Betlem, Physical Therapist
as a therapist, because we both know
each other and I am able to continue his
or her rehab to achieve the best results.
The consistency and one-on-one service
exemplify the Villa’s mission of providing
excellence in compassionate care.”
Samantha Betlem, DPT, or “Sam” as she
prefers to be called is a physical therapist
who works with both short term rehab
residents at Villa St. Joseph, as well as
persons from the community who come
to the Villa for outpatient therapy. Sam’s
career at the Villa began more than a year
ago when she was recruited given her
expertise in outpatient therapy services.
She brings a wide range of skills that are
beneficial to persons recovering from
surgery, injury or illness.
The Villa St. Joseph’s Center for
Outpatient Rehabilitation serves persons
in the wider community by welcoming
them to access these services directly.
This means that any persons in need of
therapy can be served on an outpatient
basis. Raymond Morrow followed this
path and began working with Sam after
he had a knee replacement surgery. He
had high praise for the way Sam guided
him through his rehabilitation and return
to a full active lifestyle. Evident in the
interactions between Sam and her patients
One aspect of working at Villa St. Joseph
that Sam enjoys most is her ability to
spend one-on-one time with patients.
This, she says, allows her to build strong
relationships with her patients and is a
great asset to their recovery. Sam states,
“Often a person will start their therapy
as a short term rehab resident after a
hospitalization. After being discharged
from their skilled stay at the Villa, they
return here for outpatient therapy.
People appreciate the time they spend
with my full attention and ability to see
them on a consistent basis. It is very
beneficial to both the patient and to me,
6
102964_VSJ News_WINTER16 R3.indd 6
is the enjoyment each receives. For the
patient it is the respect and attention
Sam provides. For Sam, it is the reward
of seeing patients make progress and
achieve their goals. She states, “Our tag
line is ‘Feel Better. Live Better.’ That is my
personal goal for each of my patients.” But
the reality is that rehabilitation is a process
that sometimes takes time and patience.
“If I can make the process of recovery
a little bit easier or more enjoyable for
patients, then I have done my job. I try
to teach patients that usually the difficult
days are just stepping stones on a path to
ultimate recovery.”
Sam also set a personal goal to make her
services available to a wider community.
She has completed the requirements to
become a Direct Access Licensed Physical
Therapist. This licensure allows some
patients to avail themselves of her services
without the need to see a physician first.
Sam feels that streamlining the path to
outpatient therapy may encourage those
with needs to get the help they need.

VSJ’s
Philosophy
of Caring
The Villa St. Joseph Philosophy
of Caring supports the values
and attitudes of Person-Centered
Care to create communities rich
in relationships, creativity, and
independence.
Person-Centered Care means
that our care and services are
designed in partnership with
our residents and families.
This Person-Centered approach
enables and empowers all
partners to be actively involved in
the decision-making that affects
their lives within the community.
VSJ provides a range of
flexible and secure living
and care environments that
are not dictated by routine
or regimentation, but rather
emphasize individuality, respect,
diversity, including a holistic
approach to wellness and
quality of life.
The relationships that develop
as a result of the personcentered approach to care are
the foundation needed to
encourage and sustain the
VSJ Philosophy of Caring.

“ I visited [my grandmother] as often as I
could [before her passing]. Your entire staff
is outstanding…Cynthia was amazing —
she is one of my favorite special people at
the Villa. Also, Rose, who did Grandma’s
hair, is a saint. My family was very
impressed that ten employees paid their
respects after their shifts ended. We could
not believe it. It’s sad that nursing care
is necessary at the end of our lives, but
I’m glad your facility answers the call of
so many.”

If so, your gift can, in most
cases, be DOUBLED. Maybe
tripled! Please check with your

you anything more to do this. The item is priced the same as if you go to
the regular Amazon site. Please, consider going to this link (http://smile.

Amazon or just type AmazonSmile in your search bar to get to the site, then
choose Villa St. Joseph as your organization.
Villa St. Joseph’s Charitable Gift Annuity Program:
Weber’s Story Illustrates the Many Benefits
Tom and Bonnie Weber, 74 and 76 years old, have seen interest
rates fluctuate for years. They have not been satisfied with their
money market fund currently earning 0.5% or their CDs currently
earning about 1%. They have looked at ways they could get
back to the 5-6% rate of return they were used to earning years
ago. However, they do not want to increase their market risk by
investing in securities that would fluctuate in value. They just
don’t want to do that.
Tom and Bonnie have enjoyed volunteering their time at Villa
St. Joseph and getting to really know the staff and residents
while having a deeper understanding of the Villa mission. They
appreciate the Villa mission of serving the needs of those with
little or no economic means who require long-term residential
care and they would like to know about ways they can help with the
Villa Benevolent Care Fund.
One day, while helping in the hair salon, Angel Hair, at the Villa,
Bonnie had an opportunity to drop in on the Development Officer
and ask him if there was anything that they could do that could
help the Villa and provide Tom and Bonnie with some additional
income. Bonnie excitedly brought back information on Charitable
Gift Annuities to show her husband, Tom.
Tom and Bonnie then came in and spoke to the Development
Officer. He explained that a Charitable Gift Annuity is a contract
between the Webers and the Villa. The Villa will promise to pay
Tom and Bonnie a fixed rate of return for both of their lives. In this
case, the Webers were thinking of a $10,000 annuity. Based on
the market conditions and other factors, such as their age, the
rate suggested by the American Council on Gift Annuities (ACGA)
is 5.0%. This means that the Villa promises and guarantees to
pay them $500 a year, regardless of changes in interest rates,
for the rest of their lives. Because the Webers are not using
appreciated assets to fund the gift annuity, part of their payment
will be considered tax-free return of principal for the Webers.
Part of their $10,000 is a charitable gift and therefore the they
get a charitable tax deduction in the current year. That deduction
could save Tom and Bonnie money this year. These numbers
do not consider any state taxes that may be applicable. The
tax deduction and tax-free income mean the Weber’s effective
annuity rate (what they would have to earn to equal it with fully
taxable income) is about 8%.
The Webers are happy with the increased income, the tax savings
and the security. They also are very excited that their gift will help
the Benevolent Care Fund at Villa St. Joseph.
Want to know more about Villa St. Joseph’s Charitable Gift
Annuity Program? Please email the Development Office at

newsletter and mail to 1030 State St., Baden PA 15005-1346.

A VIEW FROM THE VILLA - WINTER 2016
We celebrate
Helping Hands, Loving Hearts:
2015 Young at Heart
Villa St. Joseph’s annual Young at Heart event was held on October 2, 2015 at the
Hyatt Regency – Pittsburgh International Airport. A total of 195 friends of the Villa
enjoyed a cocktail reception featuring music by the Center for Young Musicians,
followed by dinner. The event offered silent auction items, as well as several live
auction items, including a twelve-day stay in Kalithies, Greece.
Nearly $100,000 was raised to benefit the
music therapy program and the Benevolent
Care Fund, which provides aid to residents
with limited or no financial resources.
The highlight of the evening was the
presentation of the Partner in Caring award,
which has been presented each year since
2004. This year’s recipients, Al and Anita
Costigan, were recognized for their support
of the mission and work of Villa St. Joseph
since its inception in 1997.
This year’s event will be held on September
23, 2016. For information, contact David
Dix, Director of Development, at 724-8696321, or email at [email protected].
In his acceptance remarks, Al stated, “Anita
and I have been incredibly blessed during
our lifetime together. Because of these
blessings, we are pleased to give back and
support Benevolent Care and the music
therapy program. The concept of ‘giving
back’ is sometimes forgotten in our busy
world, and I can tell you that there is no
better feeling in this world than giving back
of your talent, time, or treasure to a held
passion for a worthy cause.”
Sister Donna Marie Beck was also
recognized for her work to help implement
the music therapy program.

bonds or other guaranteed investments
• Income that is tax free
• An income tax deduction for a portion
of your gift
• No up-front capital gains tax due when
funding this with appreciated securities
• The knowledge that your gift will help
you now and also provide valuable
future resources to Villa St. Joseph.
