Nelson Boren
(b. 1952)
Taking Five
Watercolor on paper
41 by 61 inches
Estimate $9,000 - $12,000
Illusion has no greater master than Nelson Boren. Whether it is the cracks and furrows
of well-worn cowboy boots, the weathered rails of a corral fence or the shadows of supple
buckskin fringe on dusty denim, the textures in his paintings are extraordinary.
The magic of Boren's watercolor technique is only part of the story. Such details serve
as the beginning or the introduction that draws viewers into Boren's compositions.
Layered with relationships of body gesture and accouterments, the paintings are puzzles,
compelling viewers to become involved by identifying the parts, then filling in the blanks.
Despite Boren's focus on very time-honored western American subjects, his paintings
have a decided contemporary feel. Much of this results from their show-stopping scale. Unlike the traditional roles of
watercolor as a field-sketching material or studio-painted sheets, Boren literally and figuratively takes his subjects into
monumental proportions. Created on 140-pound Arches rough paper that comes in rolls, the images often measure
upwards of five feet, dominating the spaces where they hang. Boren's early career in architecture plays a role here - like
his buildings, the paintings have a sculptural dimensionality and tactility that is also apparent in his manipulation of
the paper with a variety of tools.
Storytelling and respect for materials as subject matter and as surface patterns give Boren's paintings the perfect mix
of old and new.

In 1968, Ryan did a
painting of cowhand
Freddie Prather of the 6666
Ranch in Guthrie, TX, illuminated by a kerosene
lantern as he repairs a saddle. Titled Patching His
Saddle, the painting won
the Gold Medal for oils at the Cowboy Artists of America
exhibition. A few years later, Northland Press, Flagstaff,
AZ, did an offset lithograph of the painting, for which
this might be the plate (note that the wagon numbers are
in reverse). The plate is signed and dated 1970 with
Ryan’s right-reading incised signature. An active member
of the CAA from 1967 to 1992, Ryan earned seven
medals, including the CAA Memorial Award. In 1996, he
received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the
National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum,
Oklahoma City, OK, which has several of his works in its
permanent collection and hosted a 2001 retrospective.
His work was also the subject of a 1990 retrospective at

In 1974, after three decades as a successful illustrator of magazines,
advertisements, movie posters and books, McCarthy moved from New York,
NY to Sedona, AZ to pursue his action paintings of the western frontier. A
year later, he joined the Cowboy Artists of America, with which he exhibited until 1998. Best known for his dramatic compositions, McCarthy was a
master of pulling the viewer into the painting through compositional techniques that tell a story, as in this snowy landscape, which moves from the
foreground horse tracks to the single mountain man, up to the crest of the
ridge where others are set against a backdrop of the rugged Tetons.
McCarthy’s work was featured in retrospectives at the Museum of the
Southwest, Midland, TX; the R.W. Norton Museum, Shreveport, LA; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, OK, and the Cowboy
Artists of America Museum, Kerrville, TX. In 1997, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.

15 years at the Prix de West, National Cowboy & Historical Museum, Oklahoma City, OK.
His interest in Native American subjects began as a child, and today his continuing passion
for accurate and romantic pre-reservation themes is expressed in a warm palette of hues that
turns even a small winter scene such as Cold Tracks into a golden and heroic reminder of the
untamed prairie. A graduate of the Chicago Academy of Fine Art, IL, and the Art Center
School of Design, Los Angeles, CA, Andersen honed his storytelling skills during three
decades as an illustrator, contributing to such esteemed publications as Time, Sports
Illustrated and National Geographic, and to the permanent collection of the Smithsonian
National Portrait Gallery, which has several of his portraits. Jan Adkins documented
Andersen’s work in the 2000 monograph Dream Spinner.

As a child, Johnson was tutored by his parents, both of whom were artists. He was
further trained at the Art Students League, New York, NY, and following service in
World War II, worked in advertising and as an illustrator of pulp magazines.
Simultaneously, he served nineteen years as an instructor for the Famous Artists
School, Westport, CT, alongside the school's founder Harold Von Schmidt. Johnson
relished the research that went into depicting tales of the frontier and was an avid collector of western artifacts. He saw an ad for the first Cowboy Artists of America exhibition in 1966 and submitted his work, showing with the group for more than two
decades. He received two Silver Medals, served as CAA president in 1977 and initiated
their workshop program in the early 1980s. Johnson immersed himself in the early
19th century mountain-man era, researching and reading their diaries and journals to
capture accurately the lifestyles of these intrepid trappers.

sculpted from the land itself. The animal appears like a statue in the landscape: colossal, grandiose, and, as befits a longhorn steer, supremely confident.” Educated at the Art
Center College of Design, Los Angeles, CA, Mell's work is included in numerous books
on contemporary western American art, as well as in exhibitions at the Eiteljorg
Museum of American Indian and Western Art, Indianapolis, IN; Scottsdale Center for
the Arts, AZ; Mesa Southwest Museum, AZ; and the Rockwell-Corning Museum of
Modern Art, NY. His public works include Jack Knife, a monument on Main Street,

and the American Royal Livestock Horse Show & Rodeo. In 1966, Charlie Dye invited Wolfe to become a member of the
Cowboy Artists of America, in which he won the 1970 Silver Medal for watercolor and showed until his death in 1973. His
work is found in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, WY, and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum,

Lougheed began his career as a newspaper illustrator for the Toronto Star where,
because he was the only staff person who could paint horses, he illustrated the stories
of a British Columbia cowboy. He never stopped drawing and painting horses, and
when National Geographic asked him to do a series on horses in the 1950s, he received
permission to visit the famous Bell Ranch in northeastern New Mexico, at which he
became a fixture for decades. By 1970, Lougheed was living in Santa Fe, and in 1973,
he illustrated the award-winning book The Bell Ranch as I knew It, Lowell Press.
Lougheed recorded both the working ranch hands as well as New Mexico landmarks
such as Indian Rock on the ranch and Black Mesa. Lougheed was a founder of the
National Academy of Western Art, Prix de West, and had a major retrospective in 1990
at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, OK. He was a
member of the Cowboy Artists of America from 1968 to 1982, in which he won 18

El Rancho de San Sebastian - Canoncito
Signed ‘Fremont F Ellis’ ll
Oil on canvas board

Estimate $28,000 - $32,000
52
Montana born and New York educated, Ellis had a sojourn in California
before moving to a studio on Camino del Monte Sol in Santa Fe, NM, in 1919.
Two years later, he joined with four artists to form an exhibition group called Los
Cinco Pintores. Will Shuster, Jozef Bakos, Walter Mruck and Willard Nash were
more “cutting edge” than the traditional Ellis, who excelled in painting the landscape surrounding Santa Fe, including this work depicting a ranch off Old Santa
Fe Trail where it enters Apache Canyon at Canoncito. Ellis' painterly application
of oils in a palette of saturated colors was well suited to Santa Fe's seasons, and
notably the brilliant yellow golds of October aspens. His works are widely represented in New Mexico museum collections, as well as across the country, including the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, IN; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, OK;
and the Stark Museum, Orange, TX.

Oil on canvas board

Estimate $30,000 - $50,000
Six years before his death, Dixon and wife Edith moved into their Mount
Carmel summer home east of Zion National Park in southern Utah. From this
small town in Long Valley, Dixon traveled and painted landscapes, including
this one, which pictures a landscape near Colorado City (formerly Short Creek)
on the border of Utah in the Arizona Strip, an unspoiled and remote stretch of
land north of the Grand Canyon. Dixon painted his landscapes outdoors, sensitively capturing light and form. He also did studio paintings that include
Native peoples and cowboys—lifestyles that he experienced and knew intimately. His work has been documented in numerous books and catalogues,
including the monograph Desert Dreams: The Art and Life of Maynard Dixon
(1998) by Donald Hagerty, and today his Mt. Carmel home is an artist retreat
and museum.

Since he was a young artist, Hulings has made extended trips to Europe. In 1958,
he embarked on a three-year sojourn there and in the Middle East. Throughout his
travels, Hulings makes watercolor paintings, among them this mosque in Konya, in
central Turkey, which is reproduced as plate 42 in the 1986 monograph, A Gallery of
Paintings by Clark Hulings. As his book documents, Hulings is a “world citizen”
traveling extensively to find subject matter for his paintings. He was a logical choice
for a married couple's commission of a painting of their favorite location on River
Seine, Paris, which depicts the Baton Mouche, a tour boat that navigates the river
showing off the sites during the day and the romantic sunset just before the city lights
dazzle visitors. Hulings received the first Prix de West Purchase Award in 1973 at the
National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, OK, and went on to
win three Silver and two Gold Medals in oils and watercolors in subsequent shows. In
1976, he had a major retrospective and received the NCWHM Trustees' Gold Medal for
distinguished contributions to art.

As a master of “big sky” paintings, Hurley is compared to historic painters such as
Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt. Like them, Hurley conveys a reverence for the majesty
of western vistas, but unlike them, he adds to his vision a distinctive 20th-century perspective. A pilot in the service and a devotee of space exploration, Hurley has viewed the landscape from vantage points few of us ever get to experience. Trained in engineering and law,
he devoted himself to painting in the early 1960s. His awards include the 1984 Prix de
West Purchase Award, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, OK,
from which he was also commissioned to do five massive triptychs. Hurley has taken three
Gold and two Silver Medals at the Prix de West exhibition and was the 2004 Honored Artist
at the Buffalo Bill Art Show, Cody, WY. He received the 1991 Eiteljorg Museum Award for
Excellence, and in 2002 he was designated a “Notable New Mexican” by the Albuquerque

Holding Ground (1999) by Donald Hagerty. Of the painting, Hagerty writes,
“Here, a figure bent over to collect potatoes emphasizes the repetitive work
needed to harvest potatoes without mechanical means. But the potatoes are
small in his hands, pointing to the idea that, little by little, large tasks are
overcome.” Smith has had numerous one-man museum exhibitions,
including Journey in Search of Lost Images, which traveled to more than 20

trained in New York, beginning his career as a watercolorist. In the early 1970s, he moved to
New Mexico where he exhibited with the Taos Six in the mid-1970s, and shortly thereafter
switched to oils. His expertise has been recognized by exhibiting with the annual Prix de
West, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, OK, for three decades,
during which he won the 1989 Gold and 1983 Silver Medal in oils. Outfitted in a customdesigned studio on wheels, Gonske travels across the continent creating emotionally charged
