destination UPDATE
ISRAEL
The 'rollercoaster' ride of Peace still haunts the Middle East, although it appears to have little effect on
Israel being put forward in presentations and there is still no immediate move to cancel confirmed groups
due to the odd negative press report. This report is based on several visits to Israel and shows that there
is still a steady investment in hotel refurbishment and new properties. This report will also give you an
update on the present situation of existing properties and our thoughts on the new ones seen.
CHECK-IN: El-Al can arrange off airport check-in both at LHR and Tel Aviv, which is strongly recommended.
Either that or just let your party arrive at the airport individually rather than transferring them over enmass, which would be the worst scenario, as they will just clog up the system. Check-in is approximately 2
to 2 and a 1/2 hours before departure; ALL baggage is taken through security and x-rayed with check-in
and questioning undertaken at the gate. In Israel both El Al and BA can offer a night before hotel check-in
for groups. In Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, groups (min 30 pax) using El Al can have a private check-in at their
hotel the night before at no extra cost. The same applies to Eilat, except that this will be on request
basis.
The flight time to Tel Aviv is four and half hours. On arrival in Israel it is worth advising your party to ask
immigration not to stamp their passport, as numerous Arab countries will deny entry to anyone with an
Israeli entry stamp, necessitating the need to purchase another passport. Eshet can meet your group at
the aircraft steps and can also provide a VIP room (depending on group size and at extra cost) where the
group can relax while immigration matters are completed.
Secondly there is always the thought of safety in the back of one's mind. destinations UNLIMITED have
visited Israel several times and we can honestly say the last thing we felt was threatened. We visited all
areas including the predominantly Arab quarters, such as Bethlehem and normality ruled throughout.
Thirdly politics and religion: They apply as much as you want them to; a visit to Israel will answer many
questions and raise many more, but most of what you will find will be generally favourable and nothing
like you are led to believe in the press, television or by the ill-informed - but it never is, is it?
Furthermore, Shabbat or the Sabbath. From sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday you will hardly notice
any difference from a Sunday in the UK - Jewish shops close, Arab shops open, there is less traffic on the
road, and hotels may request that you don't smoke or take photographs in their restaurants. That's it,
frightening isn't it? Those observing the Sabbath are not allowed to operate anything mechanical, so in
certain hotels there are separate lifts that will visit every floor automatically. It is recommended that you
make a note of where these are if you are not observing the Sabbath or are in a hurry!
Finally food. All 'kosher' really means is that certain foods aren't eaten such as pork and shellfish
(originally this was based on the simple principal of foods that spoil easily in hot weather), or eaten
together such as meat and dairy products, which are never put on the same table together. A dairy
breakfast is a revelation - cheese, fish, and eggs, plus a wide range of cereals and fruit to start the day
right.
All kosher meals are 'overseen' to ensure that they meet the strict code laid down in their preparation
and the end result is that hygiene standards are as high as any in Europe. That has got most of the
preconceived negatives out of the way, so down to where to stay and what to do.
THE COUNTRY
The first thing to understand is the size of Israel. For a land
that can offer skiing, fertile plains, arid dessert, the lowest
point on earth, sub-tropical beaches and coral reefs, it is
surprisingly only the size of Wales, a little longer and a little
narrower, but the same size. This makes visiting all the sights
very easy in a fairly short space of time.
The climate is also very mixed. Tel Aviv ranges in
temperature from the mid 40 degrees Fahrenheit to the
upper 80's. Jerusalem is fairly high up and is generally cooler
all year; in summer reaching the lower 80's and in the winter, (late November to March) the low 40's, with
even the odd chance of snow; but generally it is clear and bright. Eilat seldom goes below 50 degrees;
even in the winter it stays around the 70's, but in the height of the summer it is well over 100+.
The Dead Sea area is the warmest area, 5-10 degrees above Eilat, but due to it being the lowest spot on
earth, the extra atmosphere generally prevents bad sunburn, except for the unlucky few. The principal
places to stay during a 4-5 night incentive or conference are Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Eilat. Each can be
used individually, but are best combined to form a two-centre programme.
TEL AVIV
Tel Aviv has recently been placed at number 3 on Lonely Planets’
top 10 cities for 2011. Tel Aviv boasts modern architecture,
alongside classic examples of the Bauhaus school of the 1930’s
and 1940’s brought to Israel by new immigrant architects at that
time.
Activity Idea – Segway Tour: The DMC can organise a tour in TelAviv through its beaches and parks on a Segways.
Jaffa is the original old port area famed as the departure point of Jonah (of Jonah and the Whale fame). It
has a good, relaxed atmosphere, which captures much of its past history; and with most areas free of
traffic, it is a good place to stroll, enjoy a meal or dance the night away.
The Neve Tsedek area, one of the first neighbourhoods built outside Jaffa, is now an Artistic Colony and is
being lovingly restored. Jaffa, one of the World's most ancient port cities, where stone buildings, narrow
passages and picturesque courtyards recall the rich past of this charming city.
Today, Old Jaffa is alive and houses a thriving artists’ colony. The twisting passages will reveal antiquities
and coins, ceramics, silk art, impressionist paintings, hand-woven goods and exquisite jewels, all born in
an atmosphere inspired by the surroundings. Our next visit will be at the historic Tel Aviv-Jaffa train
station, located between hip Neve Tzedek and the Mediterranean Sea, which has recently been
transformed into a new entertainment and leisure centre after a 10-year restoration project.
After a delicious dinner, experience the best of Tel Aviv’s vibrant and legendary nightlife! Tel Aviv is a
perfect city for tourists and people who love having fun. It is a bustling city of lights, saturated with a
vivacious passion for life while offering every possible type of evening entertainment. Called the city that
never stops, Tel Aviv lives up to this description every day of the week from dawn to dusk and dusk to
dawn.
Tel Aviv is a great place to relax by the sea after visiting the main
sights of Israel. This option is best undertaken between April to
October, when the weather is more suitable for sunbathing. In fact
during these times it would be preferable to choose Tel Aviv over
Eilat, as all major places of interest are within easy reach and it is a
superb all-round Mediterranean resort. At other times Eilat
guarantees a superior climate, but is not as sophisticated a resort as
Tel Aviv. The hotels in Tel Aviv, (which are mainly on the beachfront)
or those at Herzlia, a few miles from the city and more resortorientated, are perfect for a city/sea programme; and with a new
Waldorf Astoria open since 2010, the possibilities for groups coming
to Israel are now endless..
Tel Aviv is a great base to explore all the major places of interest, which are never more than
approximately 90 minutes drive away. The city also has an absolutely superb nightlife, including pubs,
discos, clubs etc. and nearby is the old historic city of Jaffa, which is now really a suburb of Tel Aviv.
From Tel Aviv it is easy to explore Caesarea, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee and Tiberias (all of which with
careful planning can be covered in one day). The northern area of Israel is rich in both history and
vegetation. The Romans built a great city at Caesarea with a manmade harbour and aqueduct. Caesarea
also has an excellent hotel - the Dan Caesarea, which is perfect for a small, quiet conference (50-60
delegates) and until recently had the only golf course in Israel (the other is located in Gaash). The area is
rich with the stories of the Bible, being the area where Jesus lived and performed his first miracle; the
plains are rich and fertile and the Sea of Galilee, famous both from the Bible and for its archaeological
remains in and around Tiberias, is situated at the foot of the arid wilderness, which includes the Golan
Heights.
EATING AND DRINKING
In Jaffa there are some excellent restaurants, both in the old town area and by the port, the most famous
of which is the 'Babai at the Port' set right by the waters edge - a relaxed, informal restaurant with tables
set out along the jetty in the warmer times of spring to autumn.
The old veteran restaurant of BABAI in Jaffa serves good food.
Nothing overly fancy, no gourmet, no butter – cooking is based on
good healthy olive oil.
Babai, the owner, was a fisherman who one day decided to open a
small fish and seafood restaurant. As the years went by, the place
has grown in size and renown, yet never lost the feel of a small
and peaceful establishment. Visiting the restaurant, you will meet
Babai himself, who has an amazing repertoire of tales and stories
about the sea and Jaffa, the place he has lived all his life.
Le Relais Jaffa is a pleasant restaurant situated in one of Jaffa's back streets in an old Turkish style house;
the French food is excellent and the restaurant has a pleasant friendly atmosphere.
The famous Chef Restaurant Cordelia - The renowned and critically acclaimed restaurant of Chef Nir
Zook. Cordelia is a classic, French-style Chef’s restaurant, drawing from several culinary traditions. As the
restraint utilise only local materials and ingredients typical to the region, this will ensure a perfect
evening.
HELICOPTER RIDES: (Chim-Nir Aviation Services)
A great idea to add as a surprise to any programme. The flight from, on this occasion, Tel Aviv to
Jerusalem is an amazing way to see Israel, as you fly low over Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Judean Desert,
Jericho and the Dead Sea. The flight gives you an idea of how geographically diverse Israel is for such a
relatively small country; it saves you a 45-minute drive from Tel Aviv and you get to see in half an hour
what you would normally take half a day see by car.
HOTELS – GENERAL
As the Israeli Government no longer classifies hotels, it is therefore imperative to work with someone who
knows the quality of the various hotels that you might consider. A great deal has recently been done to
refurbish hotels and this process is an ongoing one. If the standard of improvement continues there will
be few if any 4 to 5 star hotels that wouldn't be suitable for incentive and conference groups taking into
consideration specific requirements and budget constraints.
TEL AVIV HILTON: Perched on a cliff overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea, The Hilton Tel Aviv Hotel is located on
the Tel Aviv beachfront. The hotel has a reputation as one
of Israel’s finest establishments.
All rooms have sea views, with balconies and their outdoor
pool, restaurants and lobby lounge are the place to be
seen in Tel Aviv. An excellent place to stay! The Hilton is a
superb choice for
both incentive and
conference groups, as it is well appointed, well kept and very well
run.
This deluxe 5-star hotel offers 583 rooms and suites and has been
kept up to a very high standard throughout, having been renovated
early 2012 and now boasts a new business lounge and Grand
Ballroom. The suites are located on the17th-floor; which is also
home to the Executive Lounge and private check-in for groups can
also be offered (with in-room hostess in room).
SHERATON TEL AVIV: This 350 room, 5-star deluxe property
would be my other main choice, as it is superbly run and
maintained to a very high standard, with over half the rooms
having been recently renovated in April 2011.
The hotel management are both keen and capable of giving
the highest standard of service to any group you entrust to
them and to ensure this they limit the number of groups in
the hotel at any one time.
Enjoy a warm welcome and city charm at the luxuriously
renovated Sheraton Tel Aviv Hotel & Towers. Spectacularly located in the heart of the city and on the
shore of the deep blue of the Mediterranean and it's white sandy beaches, the Sheraton Tel Aviv Hotel &
Towers is a perfect base to enjoy all Tel Aviv is able to offer.
DAVID INTERCONTINENTAL TEL AVIV: The 5-star David Intercontinental is Tel Aviv’s newest and most
luxurious hotel, with the largest and most lavish banqueting and convention facilities of any hotel in Israel
and the Middle East, accommodating up to 5000 guests. The hotel offers 600 deluxe guest rooms,
including suites, executive suites and a prestigious Presidential
suite. Situated on the Mediterranean seafront in the heart of
Tel Aviv, the rooms all have panoramic views of the
Mediterranean.
The property combines the magic of a beachfront promenade
with the winding “So Ho” streets of the city’s most fashionable
neighborhood. The central business district, Jaffa, Ilana Gur
Museum and Nahalat Binyamin Market are within a short
walk. Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Suzanne Dallal Centre
are superb cultural experiences. Certainly, it's one of Tel Aviv’s
best hotels.
DAN TEL AVIV HOTEL - 5-star: With its city centre location and
impressive Mediterranean beachfront, this more sedate, deluxe
property has 287 rooms and therefore could be deemed suitable for
smaller, quieter or even
more mature groups. The
rooms
have
been
refurbished to an excellent
standard and the hotel
features a large choice of
public rooms, reception halls
and conference rooms, as
well as a fabulous pool
setting featuring romantic vistas of the sea and skyline.
DAN PANORAMA HOTEL: The 500 room four star property
situated between Tel Aviv and Jaffa has recently undergone a
complete renovation and it now has the largest convention centre
(for up to 300) in Israel. It is a useful property especially for large
groups or for any sales conferences needing state of the art
equipment.
The hotel is a Superior 4 star hotel and with each guest room has a
balcony providing superb views of the sea. Exotic Old Jaffa and Tel
Aviv's animated seafront promenade are just a short walk from
the hotel. Facilities include a mini bar; cable TV, safe and voice mail. The hotel has a large Swimming Pool
overlooking the beach, Advanced Health & Fitness Centre, Dry Sauna, Jacuzzi, Massage, Windsurfing and
Water Sports.
CROWNE INN TEL AVIV - Superior 4 star: With around 300 rooms,
this excellent property is in an enviable location; right on the beach
and is suitable for both medium sized incentive or conference
groups.
The Hotel is just 3 km from Old Jaffa and 18 km from the airport.
Tel-Aviv Performing Arts Centre, Dizengoff Shopping Centre, Jaffa
Flea Market, Tel Aviv Museum of Modern Art are some of the places of interest one will find nearby.
RADISSON MORIAH TEL-AVIV: has recently reopened as a moderate deluxe hotel after being completely
rebuilt. It has a beautiful lobby, new executive lounge, and conference rooms.
THE 5-STAR HERODS HOTEL Tel-Aviv overlooks the
Mediterranean Sea and offers round-the-clock life of ‘The city
that never sleeps. The hotel has a beachfront location, just a few
steps from Tel-Aviv Marina and the beach.
This brand-new property is ideal for incentive and conference
groups, with its excellent meeting facilities, and also features
wellness facilities and a restaurant. Boasting antique furniture
and stylish décor, the hotel also has a lobby depicting Tel Aviv's main road during the 1930s.
EATING AND DRINKING
Brew House Tel Aviv: This venue is perfect for groups who wish to
have a more relaxed and casual dining experience. Centred around a
huge copper cylinder, the equipment gives the restaurant / bar an
authentic and fun atmosphere. For groups wishing to dine there, the
upstairs area can be sectioned off and also has a balcony, which
overlooks the lower floor; this is most accommodating and will
provide the guests with an almost ‘al fresco’ feeling.
Nana Bar Restaurant: Nana is located in one of the rustic streets of
Neveh Zedek's neighborhood. This ‘Resto-bar’ had open 7 years ago,
and was designed by the owner, Gilad Dor, who inspired to create a
changing atmosphere according to the different spaces in the Restobar, which include a salon, a garden patio and French chateau, all of
which are decorated with a collection of art pieces, antiques and a
touch of unique household objects.
Boya Restaurant:
This very busy place, with a deck overlooking the sea, serves
everything from tapas, pizzas, salads, and focaccia to grilled rib-eye
steak, seafood linguine, and fine sautéed shrimp in white wine. There
are also a dozen beers, good espresso, and a dessert list that includes
homemade Arabic sweet-cheese kanafeh (made in-house).
The White Pergola (Hasuka Halevana) Restaurant: In the bustling port of Tel Aviv, on a perfect spot
overlooking the Mediterranean, stands “HaSukkah HaLevana,” the additional location of the veteran and
well-known restaurant from Jaffa. “HaSukkah Halevana” – of Tel Aviv – maintains the tradition of her
elder sibling and offers guests a rich and classical menu of fish, seafood, and assorted meats, as well as
professional, courteous service, and a relaxed, luxurious Mediterranean atmosphere.
Maganda Restaurant: The Maganda Restaurant is situated in the
Yemenite Quarter in Tel Aviv. This famous restaurant has been
serviving local delights for generations. The warm hospitality and
delicious food make this restaurant an authentic treat.
House Number 3 Restaurant: Perfect for gala and farewell dinners, House Number 3 is a beautiful old
Arab building from the Ottoman Empire period. Built in 1870
and almost 140 years old, it has been lovingly restored by
Leila and Hamoudi. It is delightfully located in the centre of
Old Jaffa across the road from the Old Clock Tower and the
famous local Flea Market. In the Spring and Summer, after an
evening of excellent food and wine you are invited to go up
to the roof for Arab coffee and desserts, where, while sipping
your after-dinner drink, you can witness one of the most
stunning views in the Middle East. Optional: Belly Dance
Show / snake charmer
JERUSALEM
Even the short, one hour journey from Tel Aviv is
amazing, with facts and figure of both biblical and recent
history coming at you from all directions "This is where
Samson met Delilah", "That is where David slew Goliath", "This
is where your St. George had his city" - the tales are endless.
And then Jerusalem, what can one say about Jerusalem?
Jerusalem is arguably THE most beautiful and interesting city
in the world.
Once you enter the old walled city every step is history, "King
David's Royal City here", "the Mount of Olives and the Garden
of Gethsemane there", "over there the Dome of the Rock from where Mohammed ascended to heaven",
"down there the Western or Wailing Wall", "this is the route Christ took to his crucifixion", "this is the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre where it happened", "Herod did this", "Saladin did that" - the stories go on
forever. Magical!
BETHLEHEM is now almost a suburb of Jerusalem and bears
little or no resemblance to what it must have been like at the
time of the nativity. The field where the Shepherds sat is still
there, a church covers the spot where Jesus was purported to
have been born; this and the fact that a stable 2000 years ago
was an underground cave to protect the animals from lions and
hyenas, the wooden stable being artistic license by Italian
renaissance artists, puts a whole new perspective when you
next sing Christmas carols. You can however openly film and
touch at every religious spot without fear of being told off, or have a hand held out for money, which is a
pleasant change from the norm today. No matter what anyone says you can't help but be affected in
some way by your visit.
JERUSALEM HOTELS
There is a wide choice of hotels but careful selection is imperative to ensure the right hotel for the right
group.
CROWNE PLAZA: (5*) Formerly the Hilton
a reasonable property and good value for
money. Probably better for conferences
rather than incentive groups as its
conference facilities are among the best in
town. It has nearly 400 rooms and is
situated on high ground overlooking both
the old and new city right next to the
Israel Convention Centre.
THE MAMILLA HOTEL: Located in the heart of the city alongside

luxurious, tastefully appointed guestrooms, suites and function halls. There are 237 rooms, which include
Deluxe New and Old City rooms and a variety of suites. 11 rooms have garden access and only certain
floors have balconies. The hotel is arguably the most luxurious hotel in Jerusalem, if not in the whole of
Israel.
The 5-star David Citadel Hotel overlooks the walls of the Old City
and is arguably the Capital's most stylish hotel. Overlooking the
domes, steeples and towers of the ancient walled city of
Jerusalem, is literally facing the historical site “The David Citadel

one of the best addresses in Jerusalem, the hotel is the ideal

been providing its luxurious hospitality services for more than
120 years. Personified by classic Arabian arches, elaborate
furnishings and opulent suites, this elegant boutique hotel
prides itself in offering guests an enchanting ‘east-meets-west’

state-of-the-art amenities for business and leisure travellers and
the bygone grandeur of royalty in the Pasha’s suite, the
American Colony’s ambience and splendor enchants its guests

charm. Its lush gardens, world-class restaurants, rich themenight entertainment offerings and quintessential style, have
earned the American Colony its distinguished reputation as an ‘oasis’ where timeless elegance meets
contemporary facilities to provide new and returning guests of all ages with an extraordinary experience.
Its traditional style conjures up an atmosphere of by-gone days, very useful for a themed evening dinner
or for very specific small groups where you are trying to create the atmosphere of the past. The standard
overall is very high in keeping with the history of this most unusual property, but the 98 rooms are a
mixture of style and size making it difficult to use for all but the smallest groups.
JERUSALEM INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE:
The ICC Jerusalem has 27 meeting halls holding from 20 to
3,100 people and can accommodate up to 10,000
simultaneously. It is a fully air-conditioned multipurpose

physically disabled. The enormous Ussishkan Auditorium has

make it uniquely suitable for large-scale events.
SITES OF INTEREST: The Tower of David Museum offers a superb
introduction to 4,000 years of Jerusalem's rich history with an
evening Sound and Light show within the citadel courtyard during
the summer months. The museum also hosts superb exhibitions by
individual artists; the most recent being Dale Chuhuly's inspirational
glass sculptures as well as offering a variety of special programmes
and guided tours for groups. In addition private events and
conferences can also be arranged in the amphitheatre or
archeological gardens.
A walking tour through the cobbled streets of the ancient city, via Dolorosa, the Holy Sepultura and Arab
bazaar totally engulfs you with atmosphere. A visit to Siedenburg House is an amazing tardis of history.
On the outside an ordinary home, but once inside you realise you are in the middle of an archaeological
dig, certainly worth a look and ideal for a small group. I would suggest you have a lunchtime aperitif on
the roof top to enjoy the splendid view. Travelling overland you can drive through the Judean Desert to
Wadi Kelt, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the St George Monastery. Continue on to Jericho the
oldest City in the World and visit Tel Jericho.
Private Visit to the Shrine of the book in Israel Museum with a champagne reception - The Shrine of the
Book is built to symbolize the scroll of the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness - The
shrine is built as a white dome symbolizing the Sons of Light, and a black basalt wall - symbolizing the Sons
of Darkness.
West Wall Tunnels. A visit to the Tunnels is not just an awe-inspiring journey through time, but also a
fascinating lesson in Jewish history and in the archeology and geography of Jerusalem.
Discover Machane Yehuda Jerusalem’s Outdoor Market Discover the colours and tastes of Jerusalem in the market
where the locals do their shopping. A local chef can
accompany the tour; during the tour you will visit different
stands and enjoy tasting different types of food. After the
tour have lunch in one of the market's special restaurants.
EATING AND DRINKING: Jerusalem offers an abundance of
excellent cuisine both in the hotels and restaurants. One
restaurant of note is the Mishkenot Shaananim a small restaurant probably best used as part of a dinearound, but it also has an excellent reputation for outside catering. Cardo Cuinaria is a Roman theme
lunch or dinner complete with togas. It offers good food and fun and is of a very good standard for a set
menu. Le Chateau serves French cuisine and is a very pleasant restaurant with excellent food and good
atmosphere although the service can be a little slow. Nightlife also abounds with a wide range of nightclubs, discos, bars and folklore evenings.
Flam Winery: This is a family business, located in the heart of the Jerusalem Hills. Tours may be
undertaken of the winery to witness how the wine is made and
this may conclude with a tasting session. This setting is ideal for
private parties or for groups who wish to combine a tour with
drinks or canapés out on the veranda, which offers stunning
views of the vineyard below.
Other vineyards in the region are also very popular:
Ella Valley - The Ella Valley Wineries are considered one of the
best and most advanced in Israel, with a production of over
200,000 bottles a year, all of which are premium quality wines. Approximately 40% of the production is
exported, which is unprecedented in Israel's wine industry.
Katlav Winery - Almost hidden in the green surroundings at one the tallest peaks of the picturesque
Judean hills, Katlav Winery is located in the village of Nes Harim, south-west of Jerusalem. Katlav Winery,
a family-owned, upscale boutique winery, blends the traditional, artisan natural handcrafted wine making
process and age-old harvesting methods with cutting edge technologies.
Tzora Vineyards - Tzora Vineyards wines are made solely from grapes grown in its own vineyards. These
wines express the qualities and characters of their origin vineyards, and are named accordingly. In
addition, the winery is making a flagship wine named “Misty Hills”, which is being produced on excellent
vintages years.
Bulghourji – The restaurant is situated in an ancient and highly
impressive building which was once a burghul/bulgur factory and
has remained unchanged for centuries. Bulghourji is renowned
for its wonderful Armenian dishes – all based on fine meat
prepared in traditional style, and the best home cooking. The
warm atmosphere in the restaurant draws together elements of
Jerusalem old and new.
La Rotisserie restaurant at Notre Dame Centre and Monastery - Listed
among Jerusalem's premier restaurants, La Rotisserie enjoys a reputation
as one of the finest restaurants in the city. Its welcoming atmosphere,
subdued lightning and soft background music set the mood for elegant
dining. Classic French cuisine, gourmet specialties and a selection of fine
wines will please the most discerning palate.
Colony Restaurant - Opened in 2005 in a large loft located
adjacent to the capital's disused train station, and part of a
growing restaurant/bar empire in the city, Colony has fast become
a Jerusalem hot spot, so much so that it has seduced other bars
into planting themselves nearby and transforming the area into
the city's most popular bar area.
Chakra offers some of the most interesting meals in town. This is the personal creation of chef-owner Ilan
Garousi, who has filled his menu with his own interpretations of seasonings and ideas he's picked up from
all over the world. Ilan's enthusiasm and energy are boundless. Desserts are inventive and worth trying.
The menu is divided into "Land" and "Sea," rather than into first and main courses and some listings are
appetizers or tapas-style dishes. Most people come away dazzled.
Gala Diners / Farewell Events in Jerusalem
Private dinner event - Villa Bergman at Israel Museum:
Charlotte Bergman, one of the Museum’s unique benefactors,
lived on the premises of the Israel Museum for three decades.
When she arrived from New York to Israel in the 60's, the
Belgian-born Bergman brought her collection of modern art with
her and helped ex Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek found the
museum. Dinner buffets can be set up around the villa and the
guests can then mingle throughout the meal with casual seating
areas placed around the room. The main room is the living room
of the “White Villa” where they will enjoy dinner, surrounded by
paintings and sculptures Bergman so cherished. A flute and
harp players will entertain the group throughout dinner in the
villa’s music room.
Theme dinner event at the Zidkiyahu Cave - Candles,
music and biblical design- all will lead to a once-in-alifetime experience at this special venue. Actors dressed as
past figures will welcome the guests and will accompany
them to the seating area, where dinner and drinks will be
served.
Chill out and ethnic music will be played throughout the
evening to create the right atmosphere. Optional:
Acappella choir to perform.
Harp of David The Harp of David sits on Mount Zion close to the
Tomb of King David and the Dormition Abby. The property gives
out to stunning views of Zion Gate, the Old City Walls, the Mount
of Olives and the Judean Desert. These magnificent views make a
perfect backdrop for your special event.
The Banqueting Hall is a magical setting for your special
occasion. Antique pottery jars give the ambience of a museum.
The Art Garden at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The Billy
Rose Art Garden, designed by the Japanese-American sculptor
Isamu Noguchi, synthesizes different cultures – those of the Far
East, the Near East, and the West – against the backdrop of
Jerusalem’s dramatic landscape.
The Garden’s collection features works by such great artists as
Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, and Auguste Rodin.
Receptions, dinners, performances, and conventions can be held
in the Art Garden. Guests will arrive at the Art Garden and will enjoy a reception, which will include some
canapés and drinks.
A classical quartet will play background music. The atmosphere
of the event will be of a chic lounge style, with white sofas and
rattan couches, along with fine, white bar tables and chairs. The
colours of Mocha and white match the furniture and the
Jerusalem Stone colours. Bougainvillea plants, fruit, candelabras
and candles will be placed on the tables.
DEAD SEA
A visit to the The Dead Sea can be undertaken either as a day
excursion from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or en route to Eilat. The
descent to the lowest place on earth (400 metres below sea
level) takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The first stop is
normally Massada, the fortress built atop a mountain by Herod,
but never used by him. It is best known for the last stand of the
Zealots who eventually succumbed to the Romans siege tactics
by committing mass suicide. The cable-car ascent is breathtaking,
as is the view at the top of the Dead Sea and beyond to Jordan.
The visit is a must and takes around 2-3 hours, depending on the
time one has for the rest of the day activities.
The Dead Sea medicinal black mud is an element made of a homogeneous mixture of Dead Sea minerals,
organic elements from the banks such as shells and earth. When it is used as a body wrap, the mud heat
retaining properties help to relax the muscular and nervous
tensions improves blood circulation and relieves rheumatic pain.
The black medicinal mud is also amazingly effective to clean and to
soften the skin.
Another must is a visit to Massada, the fortress built atop a
mountain by Herod, but never used by him. It is best known for
the last stand of the Zealots who eventually succumbed to the
Romans siege tactics by committing mass suicide. Massada is the
famous site for operatic music, most notable Carmen.
For lunch and a 'float' in the Dead Sea THE 5-STAR ISROTEL DEAD
SEA is a fantastic choice. The private beach area is well kept and
unlike some other areas it is easy to enter the sea from the shore.
The sensation is rather like being supported by a rubber ring in a
warm bath! It is a most unique sensation, the nearest to
weightlessness on earth and if during the winter the sea is a little
cold, the hotel has an indoor pool (within the spa area), which is full
of piping hot Dead Sea water. The hotel has an excellent restaurant
with a superb buffet lunch and your group could either spend a
relaxed afternoon or morning there. The décor at the hotel is most
impressive as are the spacious guestrooms that overlook the Dead Sea and the public spaces (see
pictures), which were recently upgraded.
Le Meridien Hotel, Dead Sea - Superior 4 Star Hotel - The property, with the finest Palladian marble

largest, most luxurious spa The "Mineralia Spa" - a

unique desert excursions
CROWNE PLAZA DEAD SEA - This Superior 4 Star Hotel with 380
rooms is another deluxe hotel located on the shores of the Dead
Sea. The Crowne Plaza Hotel is the most indulgent hotel in the
region. At the lowest place on Earth, right at the waterfront with
its own private beach, you
will be pampered at the
highest level possible. The
Dead Sea Crowne Plaza is
an elegant vacation spot,
offering an ideal vacation at
the heart of the desert. At the centre of the wild ancient landscape,
nature has created a rare, soothing blend of sea and desert.
For something alternative the EIN GEDI RESORT KIBUTZ has its
own botanical gardens and unique cactus garden, with a relaxed,
be part of the community atmosphere and the only football pitch
in the world 400 metres below sea level. Other places of interest
include the nature reserve and Oasis (waterfall) at Ein Ghedi
which is situated close to Qumeran where the Dead Sea Scrolls
were found.
Gala Dinner at Hanokdim Village, near Massada - In the
Kana`im valley which is in the Judean desert, between the city
of Arad and ancient Masada, lies Kfar Hanokdim. It is a green
oasis shaded by palm trees and crowned with biblically inspired
gardens. Merely walking into Kfar Hanokdim reveals a
picturesque scene - Bedouin tents comfortably fitted with
colourful rugs and mattresses. "Divans" (i.e.: Function halls,
suitable for seminars and lectures) built from wood and local
stone and decorated with carpets and fabrics woven from
black goat's hair. Desert style guest rooms amongst
conveniently positioned shady seated areas. Kfar Hanokdim is an ideal place to hold all kinds of private
events in various designs. Bedouin is hospitality extremely popular and there are two rental options,
which include either Renting part of the village or renting the whole village exclusively.
ACRE: Is a historic old city and was the crusader capital dating back
to the 4th century BC. The city was recently declared a UNESCO
World Heritage Site; it has a crusaders castle with ten halls in which
the knights lived, Turkish baths
and many other fascinating
rooms.
The town is full of life and is
bustling with locals. Shopping at the local bazaar is a must! Try lunch
at the Pizanic Port, where the atmosphere is wonderful with
spectacular views out to sea. The food is superb with plenty of choice
and the service is excellent and friendly. All in all this makes a great
venue for a themed event.
CAESAREA
Caesarea was once the largest city in Judea. On the ruins of an ancient anchorage, Herod built a port,
which he dedicated to Augustus Caesar. A 3000-seat Roman theatre with incredible acoustics is still used
today for summer concerts. The remains of the Crusader City, the Hippodrome, and Byzantine Street with
the Roman Aqueduct are also part of the archaeological finds at the site. The Amphitheatre can be used
for themed dinners and a show can be arranged in the old theatre.
The Dan Caesarea Hotel is situated nearby and this property is popular because it is near to the only 18hole golf course in Israel. This 4-star property has meeting
faculties fit for a conference or incentive group and is perfect for
a get-away-from-it-all experience. The hotel is located in a
coastal setting midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa and
surrounded by acres of private landscaped gardens. Reminders of
Caesarea’s past are scattered in all directions, which makes the
Dan Caesarea perfect for exploring fascinating excavations or for
enjoying a concert in the famous Roman amphitheater
overlooking the sea.
EILAT
Eilat is Israel's southernmost city, a busy port as well as a popular
resort, located at the northern tip of the Red Sea, on the Gulf of
Eilat (or Gulf of Aqaba). Home to 46,600 people, the city is part of
the Southern Negev Desert, at the southern end of the Arava. The
city is adjacent to the Egyptian village of Taba to the south, the
Jordanian port city of Aqaba to the east, and within sight of Saudi
Arabia to the south-east, across the gulf. Eilat's arid desert climate
is moderated by proximity to a warm sea. The city's beaches,
nightlife and desert landscapes make it a popular destination for
domestic and international tourism. Eilat has slowly transformed
itself from a pretty average destination to one that can more than compete with any destination that
offers 'sun, sea and sand'; a type of programme that still appears to be favoured by the majority of clients.
Alternatively, if groups are looking for fun and action activities then Eilat can cater for their requirements.
Recent improvements in the infrastructure, especially in the area of 4 and 5 star hotels, coupled with its
other great asset, over 350 days of sun a year, makes it a must for inclusion in any future presentation for
a winter sun incentive or conference. The resort itself is small and compact and surrounded by
mountains; the border with Jordan runs down the middle of the valley ending at the seafront and Egypt
and Saudi Arabia face each other across the water, a little further down the coast. We personally feel that
this is a resort where only a few pre-planned activities should be offered - half board, a dine-around and a
farewell dinner or themed event in the desert is probably best. This will enable everyone to find their own
level of activity and restaurants and there is no lack of choice of different restaurant styles and things to
do.

appearances, dancing at the Platinum Club, or live entertainment in the Yacht Pub.
CROWNE PLAZA Hotel Eilat - This 4-star property is ideally
located on the promenade in the heart of the hotel district with
magnificent views of the lagoon from all directions. It is
arguably a strange hotel, as it falls between the true 5 star
quality of the Dan and the Princess etc. and some excellent true
4 star properties that are available. It has 266 rooms/16 suites,
3 restaurants and conference facilities for up to 150 theatre
style.
The tree of knowledge
reaching up to the sky in the entrance of the lobby with the
snake coiled around the trunk and its roots firmly planted in the
mosaic floor is confirmation that you have officially reached
paradise. Now you can remove your tie, take a deep breath and
start to enjoy the magical ambience radiating throughout the
entire hotel.
THE NEPTUNE (The Rimonim Hotel Eilat): Is located on the
shores of the Red Sea, adjacent to a well tended semiprivate beach, in the centre of the tourism and
entertainment area of Eilat. The hotel was renewed in 2006
according to a new and modern design concept, not seen
yet in Israel. The renovation project included all the 278
rooms of the hotel. In addition there is a newly designed
lobby bar, spacious dining room, new meeting hall and
outdoor areas, which include renovated pool & sunbathing
areas and health club with sauna and Jacuzzi. The
Rimonim Eilat Hotel is considered the "heart" of Eilat and has a reputation for high standard service and
warm hospitality.
THE HERODS SHERATON RESORT EILAT: (Deluxe) – The 4 star
superior hotel is the newest and most spectacular themed
hotel complex in Eilat. It has been built in bold architectural
style with magnificent views of the Red Sea. Guests arriving at
the Resort will enter a world of bygone splendor, reflecting
the history and legends of this area. Herods Resort draws its
inspiration from the legends of a region steeped in history
since the dawn of civilisation. The architecture, ambience and
atmosphere are all influenced by the nomadic tribes, royal
dynasties and colonial powers that left their mark here.
The complex is located on the north beach area, close to the new lagoon and have direct access to the
beach. Herods Palace Eilat offers 296 well furnished air-conditioned rooms and suites, most of which with
balconies and breathtaking views of the Red Sea. The resort comprises 3 distinct buildings:
Herods Palace - A 300 roomed fun resort where everything from the guest rooms to the swimming pool,
from the decor to the landscaping, from the restaurants to the Herods Cardo thematic shopping area
creates a light hearted backdrop to a very special vacation.
Herods Vitalis - A health and Life-style resort with a 64 room stand-alone tower and exclusive spa facilities
located between Herods palace and the sea. Dedicated to the
promotion of well-being and pleasure, this is the first ever member of
Sheraton’s luxury collection in Israel.
Herods Forum - A Sheraton Convention Centre, the ideal venue for
imaginative events and functions of every kind. Incorporating a 104
roomed residential wing, the convention centre has facilities for
meetings for up to 1500 pax, and is the largest in Eilat.
OTHER 4-STAR PROPERTIES
FOUR POINTS RED SEA PARADISE: Four Points is the new collective name for Sheraton's 4* properties. An
extremely well run property with 282 rooms/2 suites and conference facilities for up to 1000 persons,
which when combined with the excellent room rates negotiated by Eshet in my opinion just gives the Four
Points the edge over the other 4 star properties. The benefits of Sheraton's involvement comes when they
arrange a 'themed' meal. The Kibbutz breakfast we had was a feast for the eyes, the ears and the
stomach, quite superb.
One word of warning there is also a FOUR POINTS PARADISE EILAT, confuse it with the Red Sea paradise
at your peril, although opposite, the Red Sea Paradise it is a very average tourist hotel wholly unsuitable
for our market.
EILAT PALMIRA HOTEL: a 195 room/4 suite property, a very pleasant property with reasonable facilities
and excellent catering. It has 3 conference rooms the largest seats up to 250 theatre style. In my opinion
especially ideal for a large group for exclusive or almost exclusive use.
AMBASSADOR HOTEL: a 160 room/10 suite property situated on Coral Beach outside of the main town of
Eilat near to Dolphin Reef and the underwater observatory. A great little 4 star property with conference
facilities for up to 250 theatre style and especially of interest to those who have an interest in snorkelling
or diving, as it is the centre for one of the leading diving schools in the world, it also has a state of the art
shooting range.
WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO
Various adventure activities are available ranging from rafting, jeep safaris, to all Terrain Vehicle (ATV')
excursions and camel treks in the Negev Desert, which is a great setting for such a day of activities and is
only one hour from Eilat.
A desert adventure can be arranged as part of your programme based on the facilities at the Maale
Shaharut Desert Centre. Here a number of jeeps can take you for a brief desert experience to your
awaiting Camels who will take you on to the centre, which is set around a Bedouin tent, high above the
Jordan valley overlooking the Jordanian Mountains opposite. An incredibly beautiful place, especially at
sunset.
The centre itself is not a re-creation of a Bedouin camp, it is however an opportunity to learn a little about
the ways of the Bedouin people, from those who love the desert. A brief, but long enough stop to hear
Seffi's (the owner’s) tales of Bedouin hospitality is highly recommended. Enjoy the story of how a visitor
is greeted and offered coffee Bedouin style, all set to the haunting melody of a Bedouin flute.
A morning visit can also be arranged at the centre, including a longer camel ride; this is especially suitable
for a dinner with a difference, as you can experience some of the best 'home-cooked' food in the Middle
East. A fascinating experience which is a genuine must for any group.
ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES: Various adventure activities are available, ranging from rafting, jeep safaris and
horse riding in the Galilee area, to jeep safaris, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV') excursions and camel treks in the
Negev Desert. The Negev desert area is probably the better of the two areas and is best undertaken from
Eilat, which is only one hour from the desert.
Activities: both in Tel Aviv area – and in Eilat
Windsurfing – Practice and learning with expert guides.
Kayaks - paddling with kayaks along the shore. Competitions and water games.
Wave surfing – Boards for self-practice and guidance.
Boogie boards – Boards for self-practice, guidance and catching waves by lying on the board.
Stand-Up-Paddle (SUP) boards – The new surf sport. Boards for paddling and catching waves
Volleyball
Water polo
Jeep ride through the Judean Desert will take you through this Moon-like terrain.
Another absolute must is a boat trip to Coral Reef. Various
boats are available, but we took a schooner providing a
leisurely cruise to the island, which is situated just off the
Egyptian Coast. Lunch, including wine, is provided onboard.
Arrival at Coral Reef provides the opportunity to swim, snorkel
or scuba-dive from the boat (with equipment provided). The
boat's tender shuttles people to the island for those wishing to
visit. The cruise gives the chance to appreciate the
mountainous desert on all sides and, uniquely, to view four
different countries at the same time. During the cruise parasailing is available from a separate boat which
comes alongside.
Upon boarding the yacht, moored at the Eilat Marina, the
guests are welcomed by the captain and crew with a fresh
drink. Once all the guests are aboard, the anchor is raised and
we set sail east towards the Red Mountains, via the Gulf’s
borders. During the cruise the captain explains about the
sailing route and the surrounding areas. On the upper deck,
guests will find tables and chairs for comfortable seating
during meals. On the lower deck there is a comfortable, airconditioned salon. A wide range of background music is
played during the cruise. The guests are invited to enjoy a
BBQ meal for lunch on the boat. The cruise lasts 3-4 hours.
The desert activities we have already mentioned and of course water-based activities are available,
including scuba and sub-aqua diving, boating, water-skiing, wind surfing and parasailing etc.
There are several sailing vessels with character for an evening sunset cruise. The other methods of
viewing the coral reefs are from the Underwater Observatory (based at the Marine Park and great for
groups) or the Yellow Submarine. However, I have heard on good authority that the sub can be rather
cramped, expensive and somewhat unreliable and probably best used for its novelty value or for a high
budget programme.
Another interesting area is 'Dolphin Reef', which is not your
typical squalid Dolphin attraction, but an attractively laid out
resort with a serious scientific study of dolphins, which also
gives you the opportunity to swim with them.
The Dolphins used to be free to leave the reef and go out to the
open sea whenever the nets were opened, however due to
some of the Dolphins coming to harm it was decided to keep the
nets closed. Despite this ‘captivity’ the Dolphins are extremely
content, as when the nets were open they would always return.
The Dolphin Reef has its own private beach as well as relaxation
/ spa area, which is widely used for aiding those with disabilities. Visitors can enjoy a natural atmosphere
and magical views, together with the unusual opportunity of meeting and observing dolphins in their
natural habitat. The Dolphin Reef is ideal for groups wishing to make full use of the facilities, however it is
advised that if you are time pressured you might want to skip the video, which is about 20 minutes long
and will take precious time out of your activities. All in all the Dolphin Reef provides an unforgettable
experience which should not be missed and due to its popularity to swim with Dolphins pre-booking via
Eshet is essential.
It is worth taking a visit to Timna Park, the site of the oldest
copper mines in the world, located some 30 kilometres north of
Eilat. The site is reputed to be associated with King Solomon and
provides an interesting
geological site in the
desert. A manmade lake
has been constructed
within the park, and
there are plans to
illuminate the spectacular
rock formations which are to be seen in Timna Park. This is a totally
unique and spectacular setting for any type of outdoor dinner.
Activity Idea - For an incentive the group will be picked up from their hotel for a day of adventure: a
desert jeep safari combined with the beauty of Timna Park. On this tour we head north along the Arava
valley through saltpans where we can see a variety if water birds such as Flamingos. From there we drive
to the Valley of The Statues where sand stone is sculpted into beautiful shapes.
In Timna Park we visit Solomon Pillars, Mushroom rocks, Chariot carvings, and old copper mines. During
the tour at the Timna Park, we stop in a Bedouin tent to enjoy the famous hospitality, lunch and drinks.
For another fun-filled activity, a Quad bike tour of the Texas Ranch is also not to be missed, and was
certainly enjoyed by the group. All instruction and equipment is supplied.
This is a totally unique and spectacular setting for any type of outdoor dinner. The DMC could arrange a
Grand Finale Dinner in Timna with The Queen Sheba and King Solomon, which would be perfect for a
high-end incentive group.
A visit to the Underwater observatory is a fascinating
opportunity to see the beautiful coral and colourful fish which
inhabit the Red Sea. The large Underwater Observatory allows a
fantastic view of a living coral reef at the magical underwater
world. It is accessible via a boardwalk built over the water,
allowing visitors to view the silent and majestic beauty of the
real coral reef. An enormous aquarium, in which a coral reef has
been faithfully reproduced, houses tropical fish in their multicoloured splendor as well as some large pools with giant
tortoises and sharks.
DAY EXCURSION TO PETRA - What can one say about Petra? One of the great sites and experiences to
rival the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal. The questions one must ask is 'Is it worth over £100 from your
clients overall budget to see it?' and 'Why so expensive?' Well, apart from the normal cost of coaching
and a good lunch, you have your own personal tourist police escort, an entrance fee of around £20 and
border taxes from both Israel and Jordan of around £17; add to this the cost of the Jordanian visa, which
is levied at the same cost charged by countries to their own citizens.
VISAS - To be quite truthful, although it is advised to get your visa before you leave, it only takes one
person in the party to forget and you're all in the queue. It is a fairly speedy procedure, much simpler than
visiting the Embassy in London and you get a 3-month visa at the border instead of a single visit visa.
I think if you go to Petra, at this cost you may as well stay the night at somewhere like the Movenpick - a
modern hotel in traditional style with superb food and which is within walking distance of the entrance to
Petra, or the excellent Taybet Zaman Village Hotel, which is roughly 6 miles from Petra and which
contributes to the local heritage and the environment. Remember though it is pretty cold during winter
and early spring so warm clothing is essential. The very best time to visit and to stay is April/May and
September /October.
NIGHTLIFE
Three Monkeys Pub is an English style pub which has live
entertainment. The pub is very popular with the locals and would
be ideal for a younger group.
Ice Space Eilat - For those wanting a different style of music the Jazz
Club specialises in modern live jazz music, which may not be to
everyone's taste.
Platinum Disco at King Solomon is a very vibrant disco which would suit a younger group. The venue does
not get busy until midnight and goes on until the small hours.
Dinner Event / Beach Party – suitable for groups - This evening will be an elaborate beach party where
the group will enjoy an Israeli Style BBQ with a DJ or Jazz band.
EATING OUT
One of the great benefits of Israel is the standard of food hygiene, which is after all the basis of kosher
food. There is no shortage of restaurants to meet your every need and taste, from Indian cuisine, to
dinner in a Bedouin tent, or even gourmet French cuisine. With the newest properties offering you such
an amazing diversity in choice of the restaurants they offer I suggest a half board in the hotel and choose
a selection of lunch and evening venues to add variety i.e. lunch barbecue cruise, desert evening, plus
maybe a lunch and dinner free is probably the best way of enjoying the relaxed character of the resort.
Eshet have carefully selected a number of restaurants to appeal to every taste and can arrange everything
for you.
SUMMARY
Despite the continuing rollercoaster ride of the peace process you can feel totally confident in proposing
Eilat. With the continued improvements in the infrastructure it completely fulfils the requirements of the
average sun, sand and sea enquiry. All in all a great destination for those who want to enjoy themselves
and if your client likes sun, fun, adventure and relaxation in equal measure Eilat is a very safe option in all
respects.
EILAT is now much better positioned to attract and sustain quality incentive and conference groups. There
are still deluxe properties being built to increase the potential of the area and with the opening of the
border between Israel and Jordan, this makes it a destination to watch. The added dimension of visiting
the stunning city of Petra, which is only 2 hours from Eilat/Aqaba (or 3 hours from Amman), will have a
profound affect on its choice as a major incentive/conference destination, which up to now has been a
stop / go destination, especially for the UK market.
The use of a good DMC is essential to co-ordinate all your various requirements, as the rapid increase in
hotel properties has put a strain on trained staff and you can, from personal experience, get the runaround at times. Check-in is still a bit protracted and you still get the odd person who is bit surly, but
generally it is much improved.
The only real negative in proposing Israel as a destination is still the security process at the airports,
especially the domestic airport At Tel Aviv, however they are making big efforts to make this process
more relaxed, but it is an interrogation process, which we are not used to.
Israel is still the only democracy in the Middle East and it has much to be proud of: the reforestation of
large areas of the country back to its former glory, the advances in agricultural technique and irrigation,
along with the general running of major services from communications to highways. It has a wealth of
both history and natural beauty. If the peace process continues or the present status quo is maintained
with its neighbours - Egypt and Jordan, the whole area is on the threshold of enormous success in all fields
of tourism.
We have stayed loyal to this whole area for many years, as we feel they are the destinations of the future.
Now is the time for you to feel confident in proposing Israel and join those who have already found it a
dynamic and successful destination.
Amnon Ben-David, our main contact in Israel is probably the
best and longest known Israeli DMC in the UK marketplace. He
has gained the respect of both organisers and suppliers alike
for his energy, creativity and expertise in producing superb
incentive and conference programmes. You may not sleep
much when he shows you around on an inspection visit, but
you won't be bored either and jointly, you will produce an
innovative and most importantly successful programme at a
cost that will pleasantly surprise you.
