Newsworthy
Dear Friends,
Last year, girls and women made the headlines.
We applauded the selection of Malala Yousafzai
as our Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and were
concerned with the rise of campus violence
against women. We were encouraged to learn
that pay equity among women is increasing
in many countries, and were enraged by
the kidnapping of over 200 girls in Nigeria.
Although we may not directly impact girls and
women nationally or internationally, we do
work together to create a stronger community
for the girls in our region.
Many individuals and companies stepped
up in 2014 to offer their support to us and
provide opportunities for our Little Sisters.
FleishmanHillard stood up and said, We will
help you with your marketing efforts; Paul Revere
Transportation said, We will provide transportation
for your Little Sisters; professionals from Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts said, We
will help you develop a stronger support structure for
your staff; the Boston Police Department said,
We will train you in self-defense to help keep you safe;
forty-four people from our community stepped
up and said, We will provide winter coats for the
girls waiting to be matched with a Big Sister; and,
seven hundred women stood up and said, We
will become Big Sisters.
In addition, as a member of our new Governor
Charlie Baker’s transition committee, I saw
firsthand the deep commitment of our
Governor to improve the quality of life
and create access and opportunity for all
Massachusetts residents. Serving on Mayor
Walsh’s Women’s Commission, it’s clear to
me that the welfare of girls and women is an
essential part of his agenda to create a healthy,
vibrant City.
Another important leader in sustaining a
strong, connected City is the Greater Boston
Chamber of Commerce. Being recognized by
the Chamber to receive their Pinnacle Award
for Non-profit Management, demonstrates the

As we launch the New Year with National
Mentoring Month, our mentors and Alumnae
are preparing for a day of advocacy at the State
House. We are fortunate to work in a City
where so many individuals are committed to
ensuring that Greater Boston is a place where
girls and women can thrive.
We know that when we all come together:
government, corporate, private, and public, all
citizens, focused not on our otherness but on
our oneness, our community will only grow
stronger.
We are grateful for the giving, compassionate
spirit of the Big Sister community. We know
it is only through this interwoven fabric of
support, that we will reach more than 2,700
girls in 2015, giving them each the opportunity
to achieve their full potential.

aturday, November 8, was a BIG night
for our Big Sister community. More than
500 of Boston’s business and community
leaders gathered to celebrate Greater
Boston’s girls and to honor our 2014
Believe in Girls award recipient,
Jack Connors, Jr.
Hosted by Event Chairs Dr. Ralph
de la Torre and John Fish, and emceed
by Board Member Lisa Hughes of
WBZ-TV, surprise guests included
Mayor Martin J. Walsh and
Governor-elect Charlie Baker.
Other guests in attendance included State
Representatives Russell Holmes,
Smitty Pignatelli, Jeffrey Sanchez;
and City Councillor Ayanna Pressley.
We heard tributes to Jack Connors from
those near and dear to him, including:
Karen Kaplan; Jim Gallagher;
Dr. Paula Johnson; Don Rodman;
and Sharon McNally.
Danielle was a shy child who did not open
up to adults. Melissa was a marketing VP
at Digitas LBi looking for meaning in her
life and wanted to give back. Little did they
know the impact they both would have
on each other when they signed up with
Big Sister Association. Melissa realized that
Danielle was there for her just as much
as she was for Danielle. After graduating
from college, Danielle followed in Melissa’s
career footsteps and began a career in
marketing. Melissa and Danielle represent
the life-changing impact a Big Sister and
Little Sister can have on each other with
the support of Big Sister’s trained staff.

The night ended with an after-party hosted
by Big Sister’s Young Professional Board.
Big in Boston raised more than $1,100,000,
providing 2,600 girls like Danielle with
caring, professionally trained mentors
who will support their success for years
to come.

Rodman Ride for Kids
2014 Team Big Sister
E
very September for the past 24 years, the Rodman
Ride for Kids has challenged charitable
organizations to gather a team of cyclists to
participate in a 25, 50, or 100 mile bike ride to raise
funds for their organization. The growing Big Sister
team had 66 cyclists and “virtual riders” to help us
raise a record high: thanks to our generous riders and
donors, we received more than $100,000 to support
our mentoring programs for Greater Boston’s girls.
The Rodman Ride for Kids matched 6% of the funds
received. Thank you to Rodman Ride President Don
Rodman, Team Big Sister captain and Board Vice
President, Joe Realmuto, all of our Team Big Sister
riders, our volunteers, the Yellow Jackets, as well as
our sponsors Holly and David Bruce, The Boston
Globe, and Mortgage Masters.

An online contest leads to a real-life example
of the caring and support fostered by the Big
Sister community.
it means to pay it forward; so, they donated
their winnings, a gift card to the Mandarin
Oriental Hotel Spa, to Andrea and Carman.
Andrea decided to give the gift card to her
Little Sister, Carman, who is due to give birth
to her second child. Andrea and Carman
were so moved by Darlene and Azariya that
they donated a gift card to them.Darlene
and Azariya and Andrea and Carman are an
inspiration to us and a reminder that the Big
Sister community is one of support, respect,
and mutual compassion.
T
his fall we held a social media contest,
asking Big Sisters to send us a photo that
best represents their relationship with their
Little Sisters. Big Sister Darlene Reynolds
and Little Sister Azariya won the contest
with 148 “Likes.” In a close second were Big
Sister Andrea Brancato-Walke and Little
Sister Carman. Darlene and Azariya were
thrilled that they had won, but they were
more impressed with Andrea and Carman’s
relationship. Carman and Andrea have been
Sisters for 24 years, and counting! Darlene
felt it was important to show Azariya what
s an organization, Big Sister benefits from
the knowledge, skills, and experience of
our volunteer board members. We have the Big
Sister Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Young
Professional Board, Diversity Council, Alumnae
Association Board, and now we have the Little
Sister Board. In 2014, our Little Sisters, ages 13
and older, formed the Little Sister Board to focus
on increasing teen participation through events,
activities, and leadership opportunities. The
Little Sister Board is a great way for teen girls to
become more engaged with the organization and
share what is important to them so we can tailor
our services to meet their needs. The longer girls
stay in our mentoring programs, the more they’ll
benefit from the positive impacts of a mentoring
relationship, and the opportunities that come
with being a Little Sister: summer camps,
scholarships, networking events, and more.
The Little Sister Board held their first
fundraiser in December, selling #BigSisterBoston
shirts. In just two weeks they sold 241 shirts,
which surpassed their goal and raised $1,520.
Teen Little Sisters intend to use the funds
for planning and hosting activities that are
meaningful for them, enhancing their life
experiences, and deepening their bonds with
their Big Sisters.

Giving the Gift of Warmth & Joy
Big Sister’s holiday coat drive provided
the gift of warmth to 78 girls waiting
to be paired with a Big Sister. Every
girl received a new coat in her favorite
color, from a very generous donor, and a
holiday card written by the High School
Mentoring Sisters. Highland Street
Foundation kicked off this year’s
campaign by donating 34 coats followed by
the staff at New England Aquarium’s
donation of 15 coats. This season we also
had volunteers wrap and deliver the coats.
We are thrilled that all of the girls who
requested a winter coat this year received
one, thanks to the generous donations
from our community!

2015 Pinnacle Awards
