Nicole’s Story…
On November 29, 2007 Nicole Tolhurst was involved in
a serious car accident on the corner of Carrington and
Marmion streets in Palmyra. Nicole’s car went over the
bonnet of another vehicle and continued through a brick
wall. The impact left her unconscious and slumped over the
steering wheel of her car, unable to breathe.
Rod Baltovich had recently completed a first aid course
with St John Ambulance and knew that it takes only four
minutes for an unconscious road accident victim with no
other serious injury to die from a blocked airway. Rod knew
he had to assist Nicole before the arrival of the ambulance.
By tilting Nicole’s head back and unblocking her airway,
Rod’s basic first aid skills allowed Nicole to start
breathing again and undoubtedly saved her life.
