This is the Transition booklet for our new students joining us at
Shaftesbury in September 2016. This booklet covers the basics that you
will need to know about life at Shaftesbury.
We hope that you will enjoy your time with us and get ready to take your
place in society.
If you have any questions about joining Shaftesbury then please get in
contact with us and we will do our best to answer your questions.
We aim to tell students their new form tutor’s name before High School
Day on Wednesday 6th July 2016. Social stories and photographs will be
given to students who need them.

Autistic Resource Centre
(ARC)
The ARC caters for students who have been assessed as
being on the Autistic Spectrum, and would benefit from
access to additional support. Whatever the child’s abilities,
the ARC team work together to provide support for all

the most of all of their skills and talents. The curriculum for
ARC students is modified to focus on communication,

School Diary
Every student at Shaftesbury is given a school diary in September. It is
an important link between the school and home allowing teachers and
parents or carers to send messages about their children. Your diary will
have a copy of your timetable in it.
Shaftesbury Merit
Merits are given out for hard work, good behaviour and being helpful
around school. At the end of each school year the student with the most
merits wins a prize!

Frequently Asked Questions...
How does the school deal with bullies?
The school has a strong anti-bullying policy. Anyone caught bullying
receives a letter home and a sanction from their tutor. At Shaftesbury we
listen to anyone who has been bullied and offer support and advice if you
want it.
Who can I ask for help?
There are lots of people you can talk to if you need to, such as any
member of staff or your fellow students. There are also Learning Mentors
and Teaching Assistants around who help all students.
What if I forget something?
Don’t worry, you should be able to borrow whatever you need from your
teacher. If you forget your P.E. or swimming kit you might be able to
borrow some spares from school.
17
Frequently Asked Questions...
How do I pay for my lunch?
You will need to pay for your lunch every Monday morning for that week
or you can pay half-termly. You can pay by cash. The current cost of a
school lunch is £2.10 a day, subject to change.
Am I allowed to bring money into school?
You don’t need to bring money into school because students are not
allowed out of school at lunch time. If there is a charity day you will be
allowed to bring money in then.
Should I have school dinners or sandwiches?
Whatever you decide to have, you will each your lunch with your
classmates so it doesn't really matter. It is up to you!

Frequently Asked Questions...
Am I allowed to bring my mobile phone to school?
Independent travellers are allowed to bring their mobile phones in BUT
phones must be handed in at the office in the morning to be collected at
the end of the day.

School Council
The School Council meets once a week to discuss issues affecting
students at Shaftesbury. It is also an opportunity for the student reps to
ask the school for particular improvements or additions to be made to
school life. The climbing frame, bench and covered seating were all
asked for by the School Council.
Each tutor group elects one student to represent them at the School
Council meetings. Year 7 students get to elect their representatives after
Christmas so that they have a chance to get to know each other first
before choosing who will represent them.
Your tutor group will be given the opportunity, once a week, to discuss
any issues or questions you want your rep to speak to the School
Council about on your behalf.
23
The Jack Petchey Award
Once a term the whole school votes for its Jack Petchey winner. The
student with the most votes wins £200 to be spent buying something for
the school. Jack Petchey money has been used to buy new football
goalposts in the playground, cooking equipment for classrooms, a
bowling trip for a tutor group and a riverboat trip on the Thames for
another tutor group
