Act of Kindness
This week’s recipient of the Act of Kindness is
Sutherly Spyrakis. Sutherly noticed a younger
student looking sad. She discovered that the
other student had no one to play with.
Sutherly played with the younger student
throughout lunchtime ensuring that she had
a happy and positive time at school.
Congratulations to Sutherly on her Act of
Kindness.

The Building Learning Power framework teaches our students habits they
should develop in order to become successful learners. The award that is
presented at assembly has been renamed the Learning Hero Award. Students
will be nominating children in their grade that they believe are displaying a
particular learning habit. Congratulations to: Gypsy Smart (Empathy and
Listening), Amy Doyle (Making Links), Pia Pettigrew (Absorption) and Nicholas
Fraser (Noticing) who received this award on Monday. A special thanks to Di
Harris for making the Learning Hero costume worn by Heather Martin.

From the Principal
Congratulations to the students who have been elected as Student Council Representatives for their grades:
Preps are on council for one semester: Flynn Goodwin, Campbell Duff and Zac Bulmer. The representatives
from grade 1-6 are on for the whole year. Year 1/2: Paige Jansen, Ella Halliday, Cody Fox, Hooper Robinson;
Year 3/4: Tahlia Spencer-Allen, Miah Gaynor and Jake Edwards; Year 5/6: Annalise Boyd, Jemma Tolson and
Thomas Burgess. School Captains, Luci Watts and Jonas Eccles are automatically on Council.
All students had a wonderful excursion to Buckley’s Chance on Tuesday. They displayed excellent manners,
enjoyed being in a café environment and demolished their pancake and drink!
One of the Building Learning Power habits is Collaboration. Students are currently focusing on developing their
skills in this area. Some language you can use at home to encourage collaboration is:
*How could you help each other?
*Can you add your ideas to this?
*We’ve got a problem. How can we fix it together?
*I noticed you working collaboratively. Can you tell us what you were doing?
*It’s okay to ask other people for help.
The final meeting of the ‘old’ School Council will take place next Tuesday evening. Four
councillors have decided to resign and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
four of them for their contribution and commitment to Sorrento PS over several years.
Thanks to: Mel Brosche, Nikki Fisher, Neil Schlipalius and Natalie Smith. Each of these
councillors have been active members and contributed in a variety of ways – they will
be missed. Welcome to our new councillors: Rebecca Haas (mother of Mae in Prep and
Amber in Year 3), Wendy Goodwin (mother of Flynn in Prep and Charlie in Grade 1)
and Justine McNamara (mother of Bonnie in Prep and Matilda in Grade 5).

by Michelle Cooper was installed. Thanks to the following wonderful helpers: Sue and Leigh Wearne, Sandra James,
Will and Josh Lewis, Lisa Weine, Blair and Daisy Sturzaker, Mark Francis, Gabriel and Dean Hester, Wendy, Jason,
Flynn and Charlie Goodwin, Chris and Pia Pettigrew, Kane Featherston, Steve Tolson, Michelle and Jason Cooper,

A reminder to parents that parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured
students, including transport costs.
Please return the form that was sent home to you called ‘My Child as a Learner’. This will be used as a foundation
for discussion at the Parent/Teacher Meetings.
Our Manners Focus is to greet others by name. Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to practise
at home.
Please check the school website in the event that you missed the Parent Information sessions this week. The
handouts have been uploaded under Communication.
A Family Fun Night will be held on the Foreshore in Sorrento (near The Baths) on Friday 22nd February from 6pm7:30pm. Bring along a picnic and come along to enjoy the evening and meet other parents and staff members.

Kids Connecting - dealing with loss.
Sometimes it’s difficult to talk about sad feelings with people we love the most. Sometimes we feel confused and
don’t know what to say. Sometimes we just need some help to understand and sort things through.
This 5 session activity based program is for primary and early secondary school aged children who are struggling
with sadness because of loss through death or family changes.
During the sessions there will be a space to talk and share, milo, fruit and biscuits, art activities, story telling and
some ways to help kids understand their feelings.
When: Mondays 29th April to 27th May 2013
Where: Life works 345 Nepean Hwy Frankston
Cost: $30.00

The Compass Award
Sorrento PS is considering becoming a Licenced Operator for the Compass Award. This would mean that the school
could sign off on activities as children complete them. However parents would need to commit $70 per child in
order to participate. This is a fee set by The Compass Award. If your child is interested please complete the form
below and return to the school office by Friday 1st March.

It's not okay to be away... Nor to be late to
school
When kids miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them to catch up on missed work
(which some never do), they often miss important interactions with their peers which can compound issues of
social isolation and low self-esteem. One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright
future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day-and gets there on time.
It sounds simple, but it's true.
The correlation between school attendance and children's achievement levels is well-established. The more time
kids spend at school, the more likely they are to experience school success. Conversely, according to a report from
the Victorian Auditor General, students who are regularly absent from school are at the greatest risk of dropping
out of school early, and of experiencing long-term unemployment.
Also, many teachers tell me, it's often the kids who can least afford to take time off school who are most likely to
be serial absentees. Of course, most people know this intuitively, yet school absenteeism is a huge problem in
Australian schools-and much of it is parent-condoned. It's hard to get an accurate picture across the country but it
would appear that Australian students miss an average of between 12 and 15 days per school year, with parentcondoned absenteeism highest among young primary-aged children. That adds up to a year's lost schooling over
the school-life of a child. ln today's highly competitive world, this role of absenteeism is alarming, putting our kids
at a distinct disadvantage.
That's not a reason to be away!
It's now commonplace for children to stay away from school for reasons that would have been unheard of just
a few years ago. These include staying away to celebrate their own or a sibling's birthday; being absent because
they stayed up too late watching television; going shopping for clothes; an extended long weekend; and kids not
wanting to take part in a sports day or special school event. This type of absenteeism sends a strong message to
kids that parents don't really value learning or their children's school experiences. Australian kids only spend 15%
of their total time at school. They spend more time asleep than they do at school. So we need to maximise every
day to get full value. That means turning up to school every day, on time.
Being late is not okay either
Missing a few minutes each day may not seem like a big deal but your child may be missing more than you realise if
he or she is continually late. Current research shows that mornings for most children are the most productive time
of the day, with 10.00am the peak period for productivity. When children arrive late and take time to settle as they
inevitably do, valuable learning time is lost.
It takes strong parenting...
As a parent myself I know how persuasive children of all ages can be when it comes to taking a day off school. lt
takes a strong will to resist the persistent pressure that kids can bring to bear, particularly if they play the guilt card
with comments such as "lt s not fair that I have to go school today because Aunty is coming to visit!"
Nice try. But the answer should be "Nol".
As parents we need to make a commitment that our kids make the most of their precious time at school. That
means that we send them to school every day, on time and ready to make the most of the school day. Of course,
there will be times, such as illness or genuinely extenuating family circumstances, when kids should be away. But
these need to be a rarity rather than the norm.
It's reassuring to know that you increase their chances of future success just by making sure they turn up to school
every day. And of course regular school attendance also helps kids prepare for the workforce, where it will be
expected that they turn up each day work-ready. The real world is unforgiving of those who stay away with NO
EXCUSE.
