2014 Award Recipients
Virginia SPQA is pleased to recognize the following organizations:
Medallion for Performance Excellence
Arlington Public Schools (APS), located in northern Virginia, APS consists of 22 elementary schools, five middle schools, five high schools,
a secondary school and other programs, serving over 24,000 students plus an adult education enrollment of 14,000. The primary goal of APS is to ensure that each student excels and improves academically, communicates clearly, solves problems effectively and acts responsibly. APS students hail from
111 nations, speak 88 languages and are richly diverse. Arlington County is the smallest county in the
commonwealth, while APS is 13th largest among Virginia’s 132 school divisions.
Achievement in Performance Excellence
Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital has served Central Virginia since 1966, providing compassionate health care of the highest quality. St.
Mary’s Hospital was the first community hospital in Richmond to achieve Magnet®
Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence in
2008. Thomson Reuters named St. Mary’s a Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital in the
nation by and was recognized by HealthGrades for being ranked among the Top 5%
in the nation for emergency medicine, critical care, stroke, gastrointestinal care, and prostatectomy. St. Mary’s is accredited by The
Joint Commission for having centers of excellence in heart failure, heart attack, hip and knee joint replacement and primary stroke
Brinton Woods Health and Rehabilitation Center at DuPont Circle provides short-term therapy services, skilled nursing care, and long
-term care services in the District of Columbia. Brinton Woods is dedicated to providing quality
services in a friendly and caring environment. The organization offers services such as postsurgical care, complex wound care therapies, infusion therapies, 24 hour care, physician and
consulting services, counseling services, and social and cultural events. Rehabilitation services
include physical and occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
Mary Washington Healthcare, based in Fredericksburg, is a fully integrated, regional medical system providing emergency, inpatient
and outpatient care through over 40 facilities and services. The system includes Mary Washington Hospital, a 437-bed regional medical center, and Stafford Hospital, a 100-bed community
hospital. Mary Washington Healthcare is a nonprofit health system and has a long-standing commitment to provide care regardless of ability to pay. In 2014, U. S. News & World Report ranked
Mary Washington as number 6 of 130 Virginia hospitals and number 5 in the Washington DC
metro area out of 56 hospitals.
Commitment to Performance Excellence
American Society of Landscape Architects, founded in 1899, is the national professional association representing landscape architects.
ASLA has grown to 15,203 members and 49 chapters, representing all 50 states, U.S. territories,
and 62 countries around the world, plus 72 student chapters. Membership is open to all landscape architects as well as students and others interested in the profession’s issues, values, and
goals. ASLA promotes the profession and advances its practice through advocacy, education,
communication, and fellowship. ASLA works to increase the public’s awareness of and appreciation for the profession of landscape architecture and its contributions to quality of life. ASLA is an active advocate for the profession at
the local, state, and national levels on public policy involving licensure, the environment and sustainable design, livable communities,
surface transportation, historic preservation, and storm-water management issues, among others.
