Hannah’s Prayer
Parent Note
We can teach our toddlers that, like Hannah, they too can show their love for God by talking to Him. At church we
model this for them after our Bible story, before our snack time, and sometimes when they are sad or afraid, our
teachers will pray individually with them to ask God for help. It is a great reminder that even though mom and dad
are away, God is always with them.
It is never too early to start helping our kids talk to God, so pray daily with your toddler. In doing so, you can show
them that God wants to hear from us and cares about what is going on in our lives, that nothing is too small to pray
about, that God listens to our prayers, and that He does answer them (be sure to point out answers to prayers). A few
simple prayers each day can go a long way in teaching your toddler to know and love God.
Below is a simple rhyme you can use with your child to get them ready to pray:
Our hands we fold,
Our heads we bow,
So we can talk to God right now.
Hannah’s Prayer
1 Samuel 1: 2:18-19
God’s Word tells us about a woman named Hannah. Hannah loved and followed God. She
and her husband wanted to have children, but they didn’t have any. This made Hannah very sad.
Hannah’s husband tried to make her feel better, but she was still very sad. She went to the Tabernacle, the place
where they worshipped God, to ask God for help. Hannah knew God wanted her to tell Him about her problem. She
prayed, “Please Lord, if You will give me a baby boy, I promise to teach him about You. He will be a helper for You as
long as he lives.” Eli, the priest in the Tabernacle, said, “I will pray God gives you what you ask.”
God answered Hannah’s prayer and soon a little boy was born to Hannah and her husband. They named him Samuel.
Hannah taught him about God; how talking to God shows Him we love Him. When Samuel was a little boy, Hannah
and her husband took him to the Tabernacle, to Eli the priest. They told Eli how God had answered her prayers.
Hannah said, “From now on Samuel will stay with you. He will serve God for the rest of his life”. Samuel stayed with
Eli and he learned how to be God’s helper.
